Assessment: Defining Current Realities (Diversity Breakthrough! Strategic Action Series) (Diversity Breakthrough!)
Debbe Kennedy Manufacturer: Berrett-Koehler Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1583760504 |
Amazon.com
The first of six short and snappy booklets in the well-thought-out and refreshingly straightforward Diversity Breakthrough! Strategic Action series, Assessment helps organizations take the crucial first step toward becoming more inclusive, diverse places: determining clearly and honestly how open they are to welcoming and encouraging all sorts of faces, voices, and ideas.Like all the booklets in this goal-oriented series, this one comes with self-assessment tools, concrete action strategies to mobilize change, and fun, quick action-planning worksheets, all in a concise 64-page format that's as adaptable to an organization-wide initiative or a small group effort as it is to an individual's nighttime reading and enrichment (where organizational change, after all, often begins). In real-life, first-person accounts, leaders from such diverse organizations as the U.S. Army, GTE, Hewlett-Packard, and American public schools talk about how they've grappled with issues of diversity in business practices, staffing, and overall culture.
Readers can use this booklet alone or in conjunction with others in the series, each of which focuses on a crucial phase in what author Kennedy, a veteran consultant and a former manager of Equal Opportunity and human resources at IBM, calls the "imperfect circle" of change: "Assessment," "Acceptance," "Action," "Accountability," "Achievement," and--you guessed it--"More Action." The Breakthrough system also includes a pack of 52 cards, each of which spells out a specific diversity roadblock (starting with "Our leadership team does not reflect our stated commitment to inclusion."). Passed around in group format, they allow participants to literally "put their cards on the table" about internal issues they'd rather not bring up aloud--making for not just a brilliant icebreaker on a touchy subject but a crucial first step in isolating strengths and weaknesses in the realm of diversity.
Whether read á la carte or along with its counterparts, Assessment is a solid, self-contained, and fully integrated program that demystifies diversity management and accords it the seriousness it deserves. --Timothy Murphy

Biomineralization
Stephen Mann Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0198508824 |
Book Description
This book describes the principles and concepts of biomineralization and their application in the new field of biomimetic materials chemistry. The main focus is on the principles and concepts that arise from a chemical perspective of biomineralization. After surveying the major types of biominerals (chapter 2) the general principles of biomineralization are discussed (chapter 3), followed by a detailed description of the chemical aspects of biomineralization (chapter 4). The next four chapters are concerned with the process of biomineralization, including boundary-organized biomineralization (chapter 5), organic matrix-mediated biomineralization (chapter 6), morphogenesis (chapter 7) and biomineral tectonics (chapter 8). The final chapter describes how current knowledge of biomineralization is inspiring new biomimetic strategies in synthetic materials chemistry.Customer Reviews:

Learning from Nature How to Design New Implantable Biomaterials:From Biomineralization Fundamentals to Biomimetic Materials and Processing Routes: Proceedings ... II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1402026471 |
Book Description
The biomineralization and biomaterials research communities have not been working side by side in the past few years. To our knowledge, no book has addressed before this topic in such an integrated and "looking forward" perspective. There is, therefore, a necessity for a book that would address, in an integrated way, topics that go from understanding biomineralization processes of different mineralized tissues (that means: not only bone, tooth, etc.) to the use of that science to engineer new biomimetic processes and materials. In fact, only an understanding of the relevant fundamentals and a simultaneous application oriented view will lead to the design of new biomimetic materials and processing routes (including production of biomimetic coatings). There is almost no training content on most of the books that are aimed at presenting new breakthroughs on biomineralization science. So, this book will constitute a complimentary tool as it seemed to be the best forum to educate and brainstorming on this area of such strategic importance.

On Biomineralization
Heinz A. Lowenstam , and Stephen Weiner Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0195049772 |
Book Description
Focusing on the basic principles of mineral formation by organisms, this comprehensive volume explores questions that relate to a wide variety of fields, from biology and biochemistry, to paleontology, geology, and medical research. Preserved fossils are used to date geological deposits and archaeological artifacts. Materials scientists investigate mineralized tissues to determine the design principles used by organisms to form strong materials. Many medical problems are also associated with normal and pathological mineralization. Lowenstam, the pioneer researcher in biomineralization, and Weiner discuss the basic principles of mineral formation by organisms and compare various mineralization processes. Reference tables listing all known cases in which organisms form minerals are included.
