      Product Description

      There is already considerable literature on learning at the individual level and a growing body of literature on group and organizational learning. But to date, there has been little attempt to bring these literatures together and link learning at all three levels. Continuous Learning in Organizations targets learning at each of the three levels and demonstrates how processes at one level impacts learning at other levels. At the heart of the work is the idea that individuals, groups, and organizations are living systems with internal learning mechanisms that can be activated and supported or stymied and thwarted. Once activated, systems can learn adaptively by reacting to a change in the environment; they can learn by generating new knowledge and conditions; and/or they can transform by creating and applying frame-breaking ideas and bringing about radically new conditions. Individuals, groups, and organizations are nested within each other forming an increasingly complex hierarchy of intertwined systems. From this point of view, the book describes the interactions between the levels and how developmental processes at one level affect learning at other levels. The text appeals to both the scientist and professionals alike in the fields of human resource development, training, management and executive education, coaching, and organization change and development. It is also for executives who establish directions for learning and need to convince others that continuous learning is the key to on-going success of their enterprise.

                    Book Description

                    Reproduction is among the most basic of human biological functions, both for our distant ancestors and for ourselves, whether we live on the plains of Africa or in North American suburbs. Our reproductive biology unites us as a species, but it has also been an important engine of our evolution. In the way our bodies function today we can see both the imprint of our formative past and implications for our future. It is the infinitely subtle and endlessly dramatic story of human reproduction and its evolutionary context that Peter T. Ellison tells in On Fertile Ground.

                    Ranging from the latest achievements of modern fertility clinics to the lives of subsistence farmers in the rain forests of Africa, this book offers both a remarkably broad and a minutely detailed exploration of human reproduction. Ellison, a leading pioneer in the field, combines the perspectives of anthropology, stressing the range and variation of human experience; ecology, sensitive to the two-way interactions between humans and their environments; and evolutionary biology, emphasizing a functional understanding of human reproductive biology and its role in our evolutionary history.

                    Whether contrasting female athletes missing their periods and male athletes using anabolic steroids with Polish farm women and hunter-gatherers in Paraguay, or exploring the intricate choreography of an implanting embryo or of a nursing mother and her child, On Fertile Ground advances a rich and deeply satisfying explanation of the mechanisms by which we reproduce and the evolutionary forces behind their design.

                    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fascinating!.......2001-09-01

                    The is a beautifully crafted and engrossing description of human reproductive physiology and sociology. The non-specialist reader will learn more than he or she ever though possible about the nature of being a human being -- and be continually fascinated along the journey. Allan Watts once complained that no "Owner's Manuals" were issued to human beings. Ellison has certainly made a wonderful contribution to one.

                    5 out of 5 stars A ground breaking contribution to human evolutionary biology.......2001-06-10

                    Professor Ellison has written the definitive book on the physiology and life history of a central pillar of human evolution; reproduction. Moreover, this book is unique in it's elegance and treatment of human reproduction. It melds three often elusive topics that beg to be integrated, evolutionary theory, life history theory, and physiology. As a biological anthropologist with expertise in evolutionary and life history theory, endocrinology, and field methods, Professor Ellison has skillfully woven these perspectives into a concise discussion of how human reproductive physiology responds to environmental challenges. Anthropologists and physiologists have often been at odds in explaining variation in human fertility resulting in frustrating discussions that typify the false dichotomy between genes and environment. Ellison avoids these potential pitfalls and masterfully presents a fresh and quantitatively compelling perspective that describes the evolution of human reproduction as an interplay between the genotype and environment, resulting in adaptations that involve graded physiologic responses to ecological challenges such as caloric deficiencies and energetic expenditure. Indeed, the ability of human reproductive physiology to respond to environmental challenges seems to have been a key adaptation during human evolution. 'On Fertile Ground' is the product of years of field and laboratory investigation by both Ellison and his colleagues. The ramifications of this research include both the reexamination of human physiological variation as well as the constraints and selection pressures that shaped human evolution. In addition, this research provides a fresh perspective on the etiology of contemporary health issues such as steroid sensitive cancers. The writing is superb and the illustrations are outstanding in their detail and clarity. 'On Fertile Ground' is an extremely valuable and important contribution to contemporary biological anthropology and evolutionary biology as a whole. Indeed, 'On Fertile Ground' will be required reading for undergraduate and graduate students studying reproductive ecology in the biological anthropology program at Yale University. Ellison's work is an extraordinary achievement!

                      "After almost fifteen years in the laboratory and in the test plots, bioengineered crops arrived to the market in the mid-1990s. Adoption was rapid and widespread. In 1996, less than 4 million acres in six countries were planted with bioengineered plants. By 2001, worldwide adoption had expanded to more than 115 million acres."

                      This is an extremely useful and informative volume that should play an important role in informing the debate on the commercial release of GM varieties in Europe and elsewhere, where the potential benefits are yet to be realized.

                      Review by Dan Wise, Bandera, Texas

                      Instant Advantage.com Strategies for the Online Economy

                      By Steve Kirchoff and Stephen Mendonca

                      Finally, a book for business decision-makers about e-commerce that avoids the hype and hysteria of so many of the current books covering the same ground. Instant Advantage.com is a provocative book with the basic tenet that the world economy has changed forever with the introduction, assimilation and immediate exploitation of the Internet for business. To survive in today's new economy, a company must not only adapt, it must reinvent and align itself with the forces that are driving the global marketplace.

                      There are, thankfully, no get-rich-quick promises or doomsday prophecies in the book. Instead, Kirchoff and Mendonca present a reasoned and rational thesis that Instant Advantage may be achieved by those who understand the new rules of engagement, who can embrace change as opportunity, whose enterprises are customer-centric, and who create value by optimizing the supply chain and by building new alliances. They note the huge risks involved in reinventing the enterprise-risks that are superseded only by the risks of not reinventing the enterprise.

                      The authors describe the firestorm that swept international markets in April, 2,000, which consumed $2.1 trillion in NASDAQ stock values, left corporate managements shaken and investors not knowing where to turn. The book proves once again that, no matter what the touchstone is--in this case, the digital economy--companies that ignore the axioms of sound business practices do so at their own peril. New rules of engagement are required by the online economy, but they don't replace the classic concepts of successful business: product, price, promotion and place--or channel synergy--as well as customer service and fulfillment.

                      What is required for survival in the new economy is an appropriate balance between established business practices and the implementation of today's Information Technology. The central theme of Instant Advantage.com is that the successful integration of IT and business will create the real business winners of tomorrow.

                      Although rich in business theory and market savvy, this is fundamentally a practical how-to book for the corporate executive who wants to compete effectively in the new digital economy. Put simply, InstantAdvantage.com: Strategies for the Online Economy, lays out key concepts of how to plan for success in a digital economy, where the winners are those who are capable of constantly creating Instant Advantage for customers, themselves and their partners in times of tumult and rapid change.

                      2 out of 5 stars Very Compaq Centric.......2000-07-25

                      This book is very Compaq biased. Some of the text reads like a marketing glossy from Compaq: "Compaq was the first to announce new products that can....". This statement would be fine if it was part of a survey of vendor offerings, but to be presented as a sole opinion is disgraceful. There is no indication on the cover or otherwise prominently displayed on the book that this book is laced with Compaq ads. They should be paying me to read this book, for I am certainly not the biggest fan of Compaq products. On a more positive note, there is some decent advice on how to structure your business for internet commerce.

                      5 out of 5 stars very nice book.......2000-06-26

                      it is very very nice book and thanks for that

                            Book Description

                            The 'Caterer and Hotelkeeper Guide to Customer Service Skills CDRom' is an invaluable tool to ensure customer satisfaction and consideration at all times.

                            By means of role play, this CD Rom provides an effective and flexible tool which can be used according to the particular needs of an organization. It demonstrates professional skills that can be used to improve performance and to identify areas of possible concern and where there is room for improvement.

                            Consisting of 36 role plays, the scenes are split into three distinctive groupings:
                            * businessman and associate
                            * single tourist
                            * child and father

                            Each group requires very different handling in terms of the way in which hospitality is delivered and this CDRom illustrates the factors that must be considered by all staff involved. Each of the three role play sets are used to illustrate aspects of 'good' and 'bad' communication in the following areas:
                            * marketing and public relations
                            * suggestive selling
                            * guest relations
                            * responding to client concerns
                            * building rapport

                            The role plays provide the opportunity for training at a number of different levels; introductory for new staff and trainees, intermediate as refresher exercises for frontline staff and advanced for experienced staff and those involved in supervision and training.

                            The CDRom is accompanied by trainer notes for each of the 36 role plays which suggest how they can be used in a training situation.

                              Book Description

                              The ten countries joining the EU in 2004 will soon be forced to focus on the next big challenge of integration: their adoption of the euro.

                              In this book, well-known economists and policymakers look at the next step in the integration process for accession countries: accession to European Monetary Union (EMU). They debate which monetary and exchange rate strategies are optimal during the run-up to EMU, and consider the conflict that may arise in trying to meet both the exchange rate stability and the Maastricht inflation criteria. The impossible trinity between monetary independence, exchange rate stability and free capital flows is also addressed as is the question of the effects of structural changes on the real exchange rate. Estimates of the `Balassa-Samuelson effect' on five of the new member states, and the experiences of Portugal and Greece in their run-up to EMU are discussed, and lessons for the economic policies of the new EU member states are illustrated.

                              The distinguished list of contributors have published extensively in the relevant fields making Monetary Strategies for Joining the Euro a must read for policymakers and economists interested in European studies. It will also be welcomed by those with an interest in the process of European integration.

                                Book Description

                                There are no miracles in Latin America, says international consultant Louis Nevaer--only opportunities--and with economic integration well underway, these opportunities are more promising than ever for U.S. businesses. Trade barriers fell at the Summit of the Americas, and even the Mexican "meltdown" failed to dim the Latin American promise. How U.S. businesses can participate in these processes of democratization and liberalization in Latin America is the subject of Dr. Nevaer's wide-ranging discussion. With attention not only to economic and trade considerations, but also to social, political, and cultural events and characteristics of the Latin American business scene, Dr. Nevaer provides readers with unusually rich up-to-date insights into how business is done there and how U.S. businesspeople can do it. This is important reading for corporate management at all levels, economists, international bankers and investors, and for their colleagues in the academic community who share their interests. Dr. Nevaer starts with a general discussion of American business and business people in Latin America, and then puts the Latin American business scene in historical perspective. He looks the same way at the Mexican "meltdown," focusing not only on Mexico's recovery, but on the residual social and economic problems as well. He then discusses strategies for turbulent markets throughout Latin America, Central America, and the Caribbean Basin Nations, with fascinating insights into the things that U.S. businesspeople can--and cannot--expect in their day-to-day interactions with their Latin American counterparts. Of special interest are the fourteen appendices. Together they provide a detailed list of sources for business information--an easily accessed guide that executives with special needs and concerns will find essential, and which will also be of help to scholars and academic researchers.

                                  Book Description

                                  This timely book examines the "quiet revolution" that is currently unfolding in Latin America and its likely consequences for U.S. trade and investment with and within that region. Receiving meager coverage by America's media, a virtual sea of change has taken place in Latin America during the past few years. Democratically elected leaders have labored to extricate their economies from the debt-laden stagnation of the "lost decade" by pursuing far-reaching stabilization and liberalization reform programs. Under President George Bush's proposed Enterprise Initiative for the Americas (EAI) and negotiations toward the formation of a North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA) with Mexico, U.S. economic policy toward Latin America is now in the midst of a dramatic revision that seeks to rectify the neglect of the past and replace it with active encouragement of economic and political change. The authors investigate the forces behind the "lost decade" in Latin America, the adjustment efforts that have emerged in its wake, and the enhanced potential of Latin economies as trade partners and investment outlets under the EAI and NAFTA. They look at these developments in the light of regionalizing trends afoot in the global economy at large and argue that stronger ties with Latin America are essential to the future well-being of the United States. After outlining the emergence of global economic regionalism and its likely impact upon the United States and Latin America, the authors trace the origins of the latter's "lost decade" to the debt crisis of the early 1980s, the inadequacy of past international strategies to manage it, and the adoption of strenuous adjustment programs by Latin nations to deal with both debt repayment and the legacy of misguided development approaches. They show how the EAI is meant to accelerate the movement toward reliance upon free-market forces in Latin America and how the United States is likely to benefit from closer economic ties with the countries of that region. A full account of NAFTA's proposed liberalization of trade between the United States and Mexico follows, as the authors investigate its origins, examine Mexico's adjustment record, and list the gains that both nations are likely to realize under a free-trade accord. They then look at two sets of Latin economies, the first of which is formed by Chile, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Colombia and the second comprised of Brazil, Argentina, and Peru. While the former are prepared for economic integration with the United States, major problems impair the ability of the latter to become full-fledged participants in an economic pact with the United States. The analysis presented in the book should be of substantial value to businessmen, students of world affairs, as well as those with a specific interest in U.S.-Latin relations.

                                                  This is the best book I have seen in this field. If you are an importer or exporter of merchandise and you want to know how to go about classifying your merchandise under the HTSUS, this is the book for you. It lays the groundwork with the General Rules of Interpretation and the history behind the Tariff. The book provides an explanation and examples by Section, Chapter & Heading. Also included are a multitude of classification problems and answers for those wishing to study for the Customs Brokers Test.
