Book Description
This career handbook is written for those who choose to apply their early childhood skills in a private home setting by working with young children and their families as nannies. Essential practical information about the business and professional side of nanny employment, such as employer responsibilities, taxes, and insurance make this book an indispensable resource for practitioners.Customer Reviews:

"The Professional Nanny" a must read for all nannies.......1999-03-13
As the title suggests, The Professional Nanny focuses on the professional aspects of being a nanny. The book begins with a brief overview of the history of the nanny profession and the role of the nanny in the family. Aspects of professionalism are discussed, including such topics as child advocacy, confidentiality, integrity, and employer/employee relationships. More practical issues are also addressed, including dress, networking, daily schedules, and lifestyle. There is an entire chapter devoted to special situations a nanny may face, including domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual harassment.
Whether interviewing for the first time or looking for a different position, the book has tips and strategies for interviewing and accepting a new position as well as for leaving your current position. It contains an excellent example of a philosophy of child care and tips for formulating your own philosophy. Those nannies looking for information on salary, benefits, taxes, and insurance will find the chapter on preparing for employment particularly useful.
There are several appendices at the end of the book that I found extremely helpful. There is an example of a work agreement, a suggested daily log, a performance evaluation, and extensive lists of resources for nannies, books, and resources for families and children. In addition, the end of each chapter has a bibliography. Terms that a nanny needs to know are in bold print and defined at the bottom of the page. There is also a glossary at the back of the book. The entire book is written in a simple, easy to understand style.
I bought The Professional Nanny in Cleveland at the NAN conference in September. Since then, I have read it cover to cover and have referred to it several times when looking for information on a particular topic. One of the things I appreciate about this book is that it is written for the nanny and contains information that is nanny specific. Other books about nannies that I have read have mostly been from the point of view of the parent or geared toward the child care aspects of the job. I highly recommend this book for both the experienced nanny and one just entering the field. It may also be of interest to parents who want to know what to expect from a professional nanny.

The Evolution of Animal Communication: Reliability and Deception in Signaling Systems (Monographs in Behavior and Ecology)
William A. Searcy , and Stephen Nowicki Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691070954 |
Book Description
Gull chicks beg for food from their parents. Peacocks spread their tails to attract potential mates. Meerkats alert family members of the approach of predators. But are these--and other animals--sometimes dishonest? That's what William Searcy and Stephen Nowicki ask in The Evolution of Animal Communication. They take on the fascinating yet perplexing question of the dependability of animal signaling systems.
The book probes such phenomena as the begging of nesting birds, alarm calls in squirrels and primates, carotenoid coloration in fish and birds, the calls of frogs and toads, and weapon displays in crustaceans. Do these signals convey accurate information about the signaler, its future behavior, or its environment? Or do they mislead receivers in a way that benefits the signaler? For example, is the begging chick really hungry as its cries indicate or is it lobbying to get more food than its brothers and sisters?
Searcy and Nowicki take on these and other questions by developing clear definitions of key issues, by reviewing the most relevant empirical data and game theory models available, and by asking how well theory matches data. They find that animal communication is largely reliable--but that this basic reliability also allows the clever deceiver to flourish. Well researched and clearly written, their book provides new insight into animal communication, behavior, and evolution.

Game Theory and Animal Behavior
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0195137906 |
Book Description
Game theory has revolutionized the study of animal behavior. The fundamental principle of evolutionary game theory--that the strategy adopted by one individual depends on the strategies exhibited by others--has proven a powerful tool in uncovering the forces shaping otherwise mysterious behaviors. In this volume, the first since 1982 devoted to evolutionary game theory, leading researchers describe applications of the theory to diverse types of behavior, providing an overview of recent discoveries and a synthesis of current research. The volume begins with a clear introduction to game theory and its explanatory scope. This is followed by a series of chapters on the use of game theory to understand a range of behaviors: social foraging, cooperation, animal contests, communication, reproductive skew and nepotism within groups, sibling rivalry, alternative life-histories, habitat selection, trophic-level interactions, learning, and human social behavior. In addition, the volume includes a discussion of the relations among game theory, optimality, and quantitative genetics, and an assessment of the overall utility of game theory to the study of social behavior. Presented in a manner accessible to anyone interested in animal behavior but not necessarily trained in the mathematics of game theory, the book is intended for a wide audience of undergraduates, graduate students, and professional biologists pursuing the evolutionary analysis of animal behavior.

Germany&the Transnational Building Blocks for Post-National Community
Donald G. Phillips Manufacturer: Greenwood Publishing Group ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275964906 |
Book Description
Phillips assesses prospects for post-national social coherence transcending the traditional nation-state, with a focus on events in Germany. European institutional integration has been seen as a stabilizing alternative to the nation-state system, a system that resulted in two devastating world wars. However, economic interests appear to have been more effective instruments of transnational integration in Europe. Further, until 1989, part of this alternative vision was a divided Germany. He explicitly links a focus upon the Federal Republic, central to post-Cold War Europe's future, with a study of private business, perhaps the most indispensable agent of Germany's post-1945 rehabilitation. Business support has been imperative to European integration. Nonetheless, if the European Union is attractive to members or potential members only for economic reasons, then no matter how wealthy its constituent parts may be, potential harmful effects of interstate competition will continue to pose a threat to social coherence of the EU, the Continent, and the world beyond. With the aid of analysis of companies largely perceived as being German, but which are increasingly transnational, Phillips shows how interdependent business needs may overcome nationalist and institutional conceptions in the transnational integration processes. For scholars, researchers, and policy makers involved with European integration, international relations, and German Studies.

Effective Web development involves wise integration of a number of various programming disciplines and Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2 covers a good chunk of them. Aimed at intermediate to advanced level Web developers, this massive guide offers minimal introductory material. It moves quickly into a section that offers an HTML tag reference and discussions of tables, frames, forms, style sheets, and image maps. This section sets the foundation for Web development and moves at a quick pace. The authors then illustrate the basic concepts behind XML and discuss some of the current implementations. They also show how to use JavaScript for client-side scripting, how to implement cookies, and how to control browser objects interactively.
The authors cover the confusing state of Dynamic HTML, describing both Microsoft and Netscape implementations of DHTML and offering suggestions for cross-vendor DHTML use. Chapters on CGI/ASP and Java follow. While all of these sections present extremely key technologies, space constraints limit the discussion to the most important points; don't look for a comprehensive guide to Java programming. Fortunately, the companion CD-ROM fills in many of the blanks with inclusion of five Special Edition titles as well as third-party software programs. --Stephen W. Plain

A good HTML 4 reference, written well.......2000-05-23
Regarding "Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2," it should be noted that for first-time site developers that are looking for an introduction to HTML 4, this is probably not the best way to go. The basics of Web development, such as the best placement for links, graphics, and text, are summarized in the first fifty pages. (First-timers should look for Web development books that cover both HTML 4 and graphic design well.) Following, is a reference-style book that comes in very handy when looking for specific information (that this book covers). I would say, and I think that I share the sentiment of other readers, that this book is geared toward the intermediate to advanced site developer.
Several more aspects worth noting: The style of writing is clear and straightforward, with few grammatical mistakes; there are plenty of examples (code and screen) with good descriptions of why something works; and I would've preferred that the screen shots be in color, but that would probably double the price.
This is a good reference book for HTML 4, that includes an overview of XML and Java. It's not everything, but it's excellent nonetheless.
Just what i needed.......2000-04-12
Just excellent........2000-04-05
Use it every time I want to launch into learning a new web development technology. It's not exhaustively in-depth on any subject. But it more than gets your feet wet on all of them. Presents a well-rounded view of what it takes to get the job done.
Often use it as a reference -- when other, more focused books fail. Chock full of useful tips. Have found it to be consistently accurate.
Buy this book, read it cover to cover as quickly as you can, then expand on it with more focussed books. I consider it a bargain.

Ron Person and his merry band of Que collaborators have made Special Edition: Using Windows 95 the ideal Windows 95 book for experienced Windows users. This book does yeoman work on all the information you'd expect in a user's book, including instructions on launching programs, managing files, and manipulating windows. But Special Edition: Using Windows 95 excels by giving you detailed information about some of the more exotic--and correspondingly more complicated--features in Windows 95. For example, Person's book gives you networking facts on connecting a computer to a local area network (LAN) and on obscure topics, such as sharing a fax-modem and optimizing Windows 95 to work well with a Novell NetWare network. Fortunately, the thoroughness continues into the dial-up networking information section because you have to configure dial-up networking properly in order to connect to the Internet via a modem.Special Edition also features extensive problem-solving help. The Troubleshooting sidebars sound like conversations on a technical support line. A typical problem: "I sent a Microsoft Mail message on my workgroup network, but the message wasn't received." The solution: "Make sure that only one Postoffice is installed for your workgroup . . ." This arrangement makes it easy to get quick answers to common hang-ups. Special Edition: Using Windows 95 also comes with a CD-ROM that contains comparative reviews of Windows 95-compatible hardware and software from Windows magazine, the Wintune 95 benchmark program, and 120 shareware programs.
