4 out of 5 stars Very thorough.......2007-07-24

This book is truly a handbook for someone who has never laid eyes on a child! It covers the simplest things, from how to bath a kid, to how to deal with sibling rivalry. Mom's recovery from giving birth is covered, too. My biggest dislike about it is the book's organization.... it could really use a better reference section so when you have a specific concern you could find it faster.

5 out of 5 stars very detailed !!.......2006-08-18

i own a nanny placement agency in birmingham, al, and i am looking for any new information on nannies. my nannies also read this book to learn how to be the best nanny they can be. this book covers everything that a nanny should know.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful source for a wealth of information!.......2006-05-12

I've had the priviledge of reading this book cover to cover many times, as well as taking Anne Merchant's online classes. Mrs. Merchant is truly dedicated to training responsible and loving nannies to take on the role of caregiver to children of all ages.

Mrs. Merchant also offers workbooks that require research in the area of child safety, health, nutrition, hygiene, common concerns of mothers and babies, pediatric dentistry, common illnesses in children, growth and development, and childhood psychology. Her book serves as a major source of information. However, Mrs. Merchant is a true educator, as she requires much research outside of the classroom and the course book.

This first addition does have some typos and misspelled words... however, I see that as a fault of the editors and not an indication of Mrs. Merchant's understanding of the above subjects. Mrs. Merchant is a true pioneer in the education of nannies, a largely unregulated job force. I highly recommend her book and her online courses to any who wish to distinguish themselves from an everyday "babysitter". Well done, Mrs. Merchant!

3 out of 5 stars Ok.......2005-07-22

A little outdated and a lot of misspelling and misprints in it. Very good information for nannies, I wish it had focused a little more on older children and nanny/employer relationships and a little less on health.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the best!.......2003-08-28

It's truly the best book I own! The author is an expert! As the editor and publisher of a monthly, nanny trade publication I refer to this book, and get the best expert advice from, the author. It covers everything and anything I could imagine a nanny would need to know. It's a must-have for anyone in the nanny industry.

Book Description

This career handbook is written for those who choose to apply their early childhood skills in a private home setting by working with young children and their families as nannies. Essential practical information about the business and professional side of nanny employment, such as employer responsibilities, taxes, and insurance make this book an indispensable resource for practitioners.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Decent resource, but stiff ideas.......2006-06-11

There is value in some sections of the book, but I find the personal appearance, travel, and health sections so condescending that they offend me.

Not only is the information significantly outdated, the fact that this is a big chunk of the book assumes that a nanny is someone who hasn't left the neighborhood and certainly has not been to college. (A large number of the nannies I know have college degrees, and one is as educated as Monica Bassett herself.) Wardrobe maintenance? How to pack a suitcase? Social skills and personal hygiene? Each topic deserved maybe a sentence, but not a chapter. I don't feel this information belongs.

I rarely pick up the book because of it. In fact, I should just rip those portions out. I find the glossary terms at the bottom of the page similarly condescending, since the words defined imply that a nanny hasn't even completed eight grade: culture, value, stress?!

By aiming so low, she demeans the professional nanny into a child who needs to be told to bathe, say thank you, and what simple words mean.

The author's take on the intricacies of the nanny-employer relationship is valid. But, when I've looked for advice on a sticky situation I often felt like she was saying, "It's part of your job to put up with that, even if you wouldn't in your personal life."

Bassett neglects to connect much of what she's saying to actual everyday nanny situations, and thus the advice is weak.

There are a lot of other nanny books out there more worthy of your time.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome, complete, but expensive!.......2001-12-03

I have wanted to read this book since it came out, but couldn't afford it. I finally got it this year for my birthday. I read it and was impressed by how thorough it was. I am glad someone wrote a book on the topic from a nannies perspective. All the other nanny books out there are geared towards families looking for nannies.

3 out of 5 stars Talk about expensive!.......2000-10-24

The book was great, I borrowed it from a friend though because it was outragiously expensive! Gees! Some of us nannies don't make that much money that we can just go out and spend $50 on a book to tell us how to do our jobs.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for nannies.......1999-05-28

As a nanny I found this book to be very useful. There were many informative chapters which have helped me in my job.No nanny should be without a copy.

5 out of 5 stars "The Professional Nanny" a must read for all nannies.......1999-03-13

Both students and professional nannies will benefit from reading Monica Bassett's new book The Professional Nanny. Used in nanny programs across the country, this book contains practical and professional advice for those entering the nanny profession. For those of us who are experienced nannies, the book is a valuable tool to assess our knowledge about our profession in addition to being a superb reference.

As the title suggests, The Professional Nanny focuses on the professional aspects of being a nanny. The book begins with a brief overview of the history of the nanny profession and the role of the nanny in the family. Aspects of professionalism are discussed, including such topics as child advocacy, confidentiality, integrity, and employer/employee relationships. More practical issues are also addressed, including dress, networking, daily schedules, and lifestyle. There is an entire chapter devoted to special situations a nanny may face, including domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual harassment.

Whether interviewing for the first time or looking for a different position, the book has tips and strategies for interviewing and accepting a new position as well as for leaving your current position. It contains an excellent example of a philosophy of child care and tips for formulating your own philosophy. Those nannies looking for information on salary, benefits, taxes, and insurance will find the chapter on preparing for employment particularly useful.

There are several appendices at the end of the book that I found extremely helpful. There is an example of a work agreement, a suggested daily log, a performance evaluation, and extensive lists of resources for nannies, books, and resources for families and children. In addition, the end of each chapter has a bibliography. Terms that a nanny needs to know are in bold print and defined at the bottom of the page. There is also a glossary at the back of the book. The entire book is written in a simple, easy to understand style.

I bought The Professional Nanny in Cleveland at the NAN conference in September. Since then, I have read it cover to cover and have referred to it several times when looking for information on a particular topic. One of the things I appreciate about this book is that it is written for the nanny and contains information that is nanny specific. Other books about nannies that I have read have mostly been from the point of view of the parent or geared toward the child care aspects of the job. I highly recommend this book for both the experienced nanny and one just entering the field. It may also be of interest to parents who want to know what to expect from a professional nanny.

Hitt's syllabus format succinctly summarizes the key principles and steps to building a Learning Organization. It includes an Assessment Inventory, Exercises, and a Case Study that enhance learning. Quotations from major management "gurus" abound. Everything needed to start the Learning Organization journey is included. Hitt is Director of Manager Development at Batelle and focuses on "putting theory into practice." This book is a fine example of that effort. For the uninitiated and the experienced learning organization leader.

        Book Description

Gull chicks beg for food from their parents. Peacocks spread their tails to attract potential mates. Meerkats alert family members of the approach of predators. But are these--and other animals--sometimes dishonest? That's what William Searcy and Stephen Nowicki ask in The Evolution of Animal Communication. They take on the fascinating yet perplexing question of the dependability of animal signaling systems.

The book probes such phenomena as the begging of nesting birds, alarm calls in squirrels and primates, carotenoid coloration in fish and birds, the calls of frogs and toads, and weapon displays in crustaceans. Do these signals convey accurate information about the signaler, its future behavior, or its environment? Or do they mislead receivers in a way that benefits the signaler? For example, is the begging chick really hungry as its cries indicate or is it lobbying to get more food than its brothers and sisters?

Searcy and Nowicki take on these and other questions by developing clear definitions of key issues, by reviewing the most relevant empirical data and game theory models available, and by asking how well theory matches data. They find that animal communication is largely reliable--but that this basic reliability also allows the clever deceiver to flourish. Well researched and clearly written, their book provides new insight into animal communication, behavior, and evolution.

Searcy and Nowicki are two of the best behaviorists anywhere who study animal communication. This book is a thorough examination of signals that "must be" truthful by their nature and those than the sender can fake. Everyone interested in animal signaling should read this book.

          Book Description

Game theory has revolutionized the study of animal behavior. The fundamental principle of evolutionary game theory--that the strategy adopted by one individual depends on the strategies exhibited by others--has proven a powerful tool in uncovering the forces shaping otherwise mysterious behaviors. In this volume, the first since 1982 devoted to evolutionary game theory, leading researchers describe applications of the theory to diverse types of behavior, providing an overview of recent discoveries and a synthesis of current research. The volume begins with a clear introduction to game theory and its explanatory scope. This is followed by a series of chapters on the use of game theory to understand a range of behaviors: social foraging, cooperation, animal contests, communication, reproductive skew and nepotism within groups, sibling rivalry, alternative life-histories, habitat selection, trophic-level interactions, learning, and human social behavior. In addition, the volume includes a discussion of the relations among game theory, optimality, and quantitative genetics, and an assessment of the overall utility of game theory to the study of social behavior. Presented in a manner accessible to anyone interested in animal behavior but not necessarily trained in the mathematics of game theory, the book is intended for a wide audience of undergraduates, graduate students, and professional biologists pursuing the evolutionary analysis of animal behavior.

                  Book Description

Phillips assesses prospects for post-national social coherence transcending the traditional nation-state, with a focus on events in Germany. European institutional integration has been seen as a stabilizing alternative to the nation-state system, a system that resulted in two devastating world wars. However, economic interests appear to have been more effective instruments of transnational integration in Europe. Further, until 1989, part of this alternative vision was a divided Germany. He explicitly links a focus upon the Federal Republic, central to post-Cold War Europe's future, with a study of private business, perhaps the most indispensable agent of Germany's post-1945 rehabilitation. Business support has been imperative to European integration. Nonetheless, if the European Union is attractive to members or potential members only for economic reasons, then no matter how wealthy its constituent parts may be, potential harmful effects of interstate competition will continue to pose a threat to social coherence of the EU, the Continent, and the world beyond. With the aid of analysis of companies largely perceived as being German, but which are increasingly transnational, Phillips shows how interdependent business needs may overcome nationalist and institutional conceptions in the transnational integration processes. For scholars, researchers, and policy makers involved with European integration, international relations, and German Studies.

This is the classic book that a good observer cannot leave on the shelf. Yes... Exactly!.. See it, it's big, and seems to be saying "Buy me, Buy me!"... But behind a talking book, ther's the far side of the coin... Even if I must admit some of the contents are well studied, many others are really unuseful. The author looses time in teaching a lot of programs that surely a good WebMaster already knows (and, in the rare case hi does not, he'd better buy a specific book for each prog.)... Going on, I got disappointed for the Java/CGI section of the book... Too dispersive... Sorry... How's that possible that a so huge and vast argument (Java and CGI programming) can be so lightly shown to the reader?... But now, let's go to the worst side... U probably think that that's a good price... And, opening the book, u surely could think.. "Man, that way I can buy 13 book toghether!!"... Yes, sure... But... Try to read the other 12... An ELECTRONIC book, it's all but a book... No pictures, and a really hard reading challenge... But looking at the whole package, I cannot say "that's a steal!"... So, I give 6 to the book, just for the gifts it has behind the covers...

I agree this book shouldn't say it covers Java1.1, but I was surprised at the number of negative reviews here, so I went and checked your page on Stanek's book. What seems to be going on is that people who are into web pages that LOOK good love Stanek's book, but people who are into web pages that DO things (like electronic commerce) find useful info in the Que book on subjects such as Web connectivity to databases, database primers, and so forth that Stanek does not seem to cover. I did not buy this book primarily as an HTML book. And even though the Java coverage is dated, it's well illustrated and much more extensive than Stanek's coverage of Java seems to be. Mac users may be annoyed that the CDs are for Windows only.

What a huge book that is so poorly organized . Do not spend any time looking through it unless ofcourse you're pumping-up for the Ms /Mr.Olympia competition. "Belive me now and heah me Late".Buy Stanek's web publishing unleashed, it's cheaper and well organized and gives good pointers as to where to start and how to go about publishing on the Web.

Effective Web development involves wise integration of a number of various programming disciplines and Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2 covers a good chunk of them. Aimed at intermediate to advanced level Web developers, this massive guide offers minimal introductory material. It moves quickly into a section that offers an HTML tag reference and discussions of tables, frames, forms, style sheets, and image maps. This section sets the foundation for Web development and moves at a quick pace.

The authors then illustrate the basic concepts behind XML and discuss some of the current implementations. They also show how to use JavaScript for client-side scripting, how to implement cookies, and how to control browser objects interactively.

The authors cover the confusing state of Dynamic HTML, describing both Microsoft and Netscape implementations of DHTML and offering suggestions for cross-vendor DHTML use. Chapters on CGI/ASP and Java follow. While all of these sections present extremely key technologies, space constraints limit the discussion to the most important points; don't look for a comprehensive guide to Java programming. Fortunately, the companion CD-ROM fills in many of the blanks with inclusion of five Special Edition titles as well as third-party software programs. --Stephen W. Plain

5 out of 5 stars excelent book in all respects.......2001-04-06

I am professional web developer and have been using this book for already a year. It is exellent as an introductory book and then as an everyday reference. For some resons its coverage of JavaScript is not displayed in the book name, but this is the best book I have found about JavaScript and its integrations with browsers.

1 out of 5 stars Useless Collection of Generalities.......2000-11-06

The book covers a little bit of everything, which makes it overall a nothing. Although it attempts to be encyclopedic, yet it fails to even make mention important and basic things such as http cookies! From cover to cover, the book is filled with contrived examples and useless discussions on generalities. This is NOT a good technical book. -- NOT RECOMMENDED.

                          4 out of 5 stars A good HTML 4 reference, written well.......2000-05-23

This is a thick book. But never misunderstand the fact that no matter how many pages are included in a computer reference, there will always be information missing for the most advanced user. HTML 4 is covered in-depth -- and should be the primary reason for wanting to purchase this title, for I have not found a better reference on the subject anywhere. Java 1.2 and XML receive good general overviews. A review previous to mine suggests other, more comprehensive titles, if one wants to delve into the world of Java and XML fully. An excellent suggestion and something that should be taken into account before buying.

Regarding "Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2," it should be noted that for first-time site developers that are looking for an introduction to HTML 4, this is probably not the best way to go. The basics of Web development, such as the best placement for links, graphics, and text, are summarized in the first fifty pages. (First-timers should look for Web development books that cover both HTML 4 and graphic design well.) Following, is a reference-style book that comes in very handy when looking for specific information (that this book covers). I would say, and I think that I share the sentiment of other readers, that this book is geared toward the intermediate to advanced site developer.

Several more aspects worth noting: The style of writing is clear and straightforward, with few grammatical mistakes; there are plenty of examples (code and screen) with good descriptions of why something works; and I would've preferred that the screen shots be in color, but that would probably double the price.

This is a good reference book for HTML 4, that includes an overview of XML and Java. It's not everything, but it's excellent nonetheless.

This book is just what i was looking for. When i was hired to a web company i didnt' even know what HTML stood for. This book takes you deep enough into things you need to make basic html pages, all the way to venturing into basic javascript, and java. Its isn't something you want to buy if you want to learn java, or java script. This book, however, will help you tremendously when it comes to two things: (1) Just learning html, from what it stands for - to creating tuly user friendly webpages, that look and feel good to users. (2) it serves as my offices Number ONE reference for HTML. It has been our reference manual for months now. It has yet to really let us down. IF you want to learn html with no background in computers (even if you didnt' even have a commodore) GET THIS BOOK IF you want a good reliable reference manual for HTML; GET THIS BOOK

                          5 out of 5 stars Just excellent........2000-04-05

Thank goodness the copy I have is hardcover. I've had to hot-glue the binding already (Ok, it's been after a year of use).

Use it every time I want to launch into learning a new web development technology. It's not exhaustively in-depth on any subject. But it more than gets your feet wet on all of them. Presents a well-rounded view of what it takes to get the job done.

Often use it as a reference -- when other, more focused books fail. Chock full of useful tips. Have found it to be consistently accurate.

Buy this book, read it cover to cover as quickly as you can, then expand on it with more focussed books. I consider it a bargain.

Ron Person and his merry band of Que collaborators have made Special Edition: Using Windows 95 the ideal Windows 95 book for experienced Windows users. This book does yeoman work on all the information you'd expect in a user's book, including instructions on launching programs, managing files, and manipulating windows. But Special Edition: Using Windows 95 excels by giving you detailed information about some of the more exotic--and correspondingly more complicated--features in Windows 95. For example, Person's book gives you networking facts on connecting a computer to a local area network (LAN) and on obscure topics, such as sharing a fax-modem and optimizing Windows 95 to work well with a Novell NetWare network. Fortunately, the thoroughness continues into the dial-up networking information section because you have to configure dial-up networking properly in order to connect to the Internet via a modem.

Special Edition also features extensive problem-solving help. The Troubleshooting sidebars sound like conversations on a technical support line. A typical problem: "I sent a Microsoft Mail message on my workgroup network, but the message wasn't received." The solution: "Make sure that only one Postoffice is installed for your workgroup . . ." This arrangement makes it easy to get quick answers to common hang-ups. Special Edition: Using Windows 95 also comes with a CD-ROM that contains comparative reviews of Windows 95-compatible hardware and software from Windows magazine, the Wintune 95 benchmark program, and 120 shareware programs.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have reference book for your computer bookshelf.......1997-01-12

For any serious user of Windows 95 and for the occasional user, this book is a must-have for your computer library. The title even says "The Most Complete Reference" and it is exactly that. It comes with a CD of useful programs and utlities. As a reference book, I think that Using Windows 95 is tops. It's easy to find what you are looking for and the topics are written so that the average user can understand. No technobabble! I highly recommend this book
