Book Description

Bringing together economics and literary scholarship, the new economic criticism demonstrates that literary and theoretical texts may be fruitfully examined for their economic form, content and contexts and that economic theories and texts may also be illuminated by scrutinizing their tropes, narrative devices and ideologies. This collection brings together twenty-seven essays by influential literary and cultural historians, as well as representatives of the vanguard of postmodernist economics. This is a pathbreaking work which develops a new form of economic analysis. It will appeal to economists and literary theorists with an interest beyond the narrower confines of their subject.

4 out of 5 stars Solid anthology.......2006-10-12

I visit this book from the point of view of a literary critic, so I don't feel equipped to comment exactly on how well it really discusses social theory or economics. What is interesting about the subject is the diversity of essayists; while many clever lit critics are represented here doing their thing, there are also cultural critics and real economists. In 2006, looking back on it, the book begins to rust a bit. The "New" Economic criticism (if we still call it that) isn't going to disappear any time soon, but it's not as "new" as it was in 1999, or more accurately in 1994, when the collection began in the form of a meeting of the Society for Critical Exchange. Still, this is a very useful account of major critical tides in the vast sea of economic criticism, and the work done by the editors to explain their mission and the shape of the book (and the field they define) is admirable. There are essays here from heavy hitters (Goux!) and not so heavy, and they cover a wide range of topics and periods, so there is diversity within this special anthology as well. The last section of the book, dealing with critical discourse, was the most interesting to me, and speculates on (among other things) the relationship of economic language, critical language, and metaphorical language. Perhaps not a book that will tell you what's going on today in this subfield, or where that subfield exactly is, but one that will help you figure out where it's been.

    Book Description

Today's economy can be described as "knowledge based" since knowledge is arguably the most important factor of production. The key challenge for companies therefore is to develop and apply knowledge, that is, to learn. Increasingly, companies are collaborating with other firms in this process. This book asks why companies seek to collaborate with one another in developing and applying knowledge and how they organize this process of inter-firm learning. The book takes a single knowledge based perspective and demonstrates a detailed argument with the qualitative discussion of an actual "innovation network". Knowledge and Innovation in Regional Industry brings a fresh approach to an important subject. Its readable yet authoritative style will be popular amongst students and academics studying industrial economics along with knowledge and innovation studies. The book will also be of interest to business leaders and policy-makers internationally.

        Book Description

Some understanding of the biochemistry of exercise is fundamental to any study of the factors that contribute to sports performance. It is the physical, chemical and biochemical properties of cells and tissues that determine the physiological responses to exercise, and yet the teaching of exercise biochemistry is poorly developed compared with exercise physiology. Where the subject is taught at all, the student often finds the approach somewhat daunting, with its focus on thermodynamics, chemical structures and metabolic pathways. Many students find the subject difficult, when it should not be so. The aim of this book is to introduce the student of sports science or exercise physiology to the biochemical processes that underpin exercise performance and the adaptations that occur with training. The focus is on skeletal muscle metabolism and the provision of energy for working muscles. We have tried in this book to introduce the principles of exercise biochemistry in a context that is immediately relevant to the student of sports science. This has meant abandoning the traditional approach of working through the main classes of biomolecules and the major metabolic pathways. Instead, we have tackled the subject by considering the biochemical processes involved in energy provision for different sports events and the way in which limitations in the energy supply can cause fatigue and thus limit performance. Recovery from exercise is important for athletes who train and compete with only a limited rest period, and the biochemical processes that influence recovery and restoration of performance capacity are also addressed in this book. The biochemical processes that fuel the different activities that contribute to sport are the focus of this book, together with the changes that occur with training and the role of diet in providing the necessary fuels. Sporting talent is a rare gift inherited by the elite athlete from his or her parents, and a brief description of the basis of heredity is included. Book Description

Despite the rapid creation of jobs in the greater Atlanta region, poverty in the city itself remains surprisingly high, and Atlanta's economic boom has yet a to play a significant role in narrowing the gap between the suburban rich and the city poor. This book investigates the key factors underlying this paradox. The authors show that the legacy of past residential segregation as well as the more recent phenomenon of urban sprawl both work against inner city blacks. The book also presents some promising signs. The emergence of a dynamic, black middle class and the success of many black-owned businesses in the area also give the authors reason to hope that racial inequality will not remain entrenched in a city where so much else has changed. The Atlanta Paradox is essential reading for all those concerned with economic and racial inequalities in America's cities and metropolitan areas.

        4 out of 5 stars dense.......2002-11-28

This was not the book I expected it to be: I expected another history of Atlanta and of the bitter fruits of Atlanta's business-oriented politics. Instead I got a group of essays about the Atlanta labor market - not necessarily a bad thing, since Atlanta politics has already been discussed to death by other authors (I recommend, for example, the works of Clarence Stone and Larry Keating). Except for the first three or four essays, most of the essays in Atlanta Paradox are of interest only to labor economists. Having said that, some of the essays (especially the one on spatial mismatch) are fairly good. Others are flawed, primarily because they result on surveys of very small groups, and occasionally make conclusions about subgroups based on responses by 5 or 10 people - hardly an appropriate research technique.

                Book Description

This is an important resource for anyone who wants to use Chinese historical statistics. The author traces the evolution of China's Maritime Customs service, explains how the service compiled trade statistics, and shows readers how to obtain, organize, and interpret Customs statistics. The book includes a CD, with a large collection of Customs data in Excel spreadsheet format.

China Maritime Customs, which operated on the mainland from 1859 through 1948, left a massive trove of statistical returns, business studies, and annual reports. These documents, produced in English and available to the general public, provide a comprehensive record of China's shipping and trade--and of trade and commercial development in each `open' port city and its hinterland. While national data are fairly easy to find in published compendia, using port-specific data generally requires delving into the original Customs documents. This book guides the reader through those documents, explaining what sorts of information are available in them, where to get them, and how to use them effectively. It shows readers, in particular, how to gather, interpret, and use statistics that pertain to specific ports, regions, and commodities.

The three components of this book collect and organize a wealth of essential information.
---A concise history explains the origins of the Maritime (or `foreign') Customs, shows how its responsibilities and geographical presence changed over time, and describes how it gathered and compiled trade statistics.
---Sixty-five spreadsheets, on a CD included with the printed volume, contain a large and unique set of trade data drawn directly from Customs documents. Most of these data pertain to individual ports, in some cases tracing their trade histories for periods of almost 90 years.
---A case study makes extensive use of data on the CD, painting a detailed portrait of the tea trade at ports in Fujian province. This case study points out pitfalls in the data and explains how to avoid them. It shows the reader how to compile series of statistics that take account of variations in coverage and statistical practice, and suggests how port-specific data series can illuminate patterns of trade and development in China's regions.

Maps, graphs, tables, and sidebars supplement the main text. Seven additional texts on the CD show how the spreadsheets were constructed and provide item-by-item explanations of the data they contain.

                  Book Description

Innovation in Multinational Corporations in the Information Age investigates the production of information communication technology (ICT) through multinational corporations worldwide, and particularly in Europe.

Questions relating to the management of corporate technological portfolio and the management of corporate research activity are addressed, and sectoral specialization along with the geographical location of corporate technological development are analyzed.

The book imparts enlightening viewpoints on the changing boundaries of the international firm and the evolution of corporate learning in a more complex technological system. The increasing significance of regions as units of spatial competition is highlighted, and the analysis of ICT provides an insight into business strategy and policy making agendas.

Providing useful insights into the dynamics of innovation at company level in an international context, this book will be of great interest to international, political, industrial and business economists and scholars.

                        Book Description

Although little is known about the dynamics of the Japanese system of setting technical standards, it is alleged that it often acts as a non-tariff barrier of last resort to corporations abroad seeking markets for their products in Japan. Addressing the problem from a multidisciplinary perspective, Dr. McIntyre and his colleagues show how the system works and its impact on market penetration strategies of non-Japanese firms. In doing so, they also provide the first book-length English-language discussion of how the system affects market share growth of corporations worldwide and helps boost Japanese technology-based competition. A cogent analysis for professionals in manufacturing, quality, and operations management, as well as executives concerned with the legal aspects of international trade and regulations. Japan's Technical Standards draws on the experiences and knowledge of an international group of academics and business professionals. Based on presentations given at a 1995 conference at the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Research Center, the book's 12 chapters provide an expanded and up-to-date study of this vexing problem in international commerce. Technical standards govern the design, operation, manufacture, and use of nearly everything humankind produces, but they generally go unnoticed. With the evolution of global markets, however, standards have evolved as important means to facilitate international trade flows--but they can also be impediments used by countries to gain advantage over foreign cometitors. In fact, says Dr. McIntyre, they often define whether a product will or will not be approved for entry and use in a given national market. His book thus seeks to answer four interrelated questions: *How does the Japanese technical standards system work when viewed in a national and internationally comparative light? *How do Japanese technical standards impact the market penetration strategy of and market share growth by non-Japanese firms? *How do technical standards fit into the overall trade policy approach of Japan and define its economic relations? *How do Japanese technical standards fit into the overall Japanese "techno-infrastructure" in explaining Japanese global competitiveness? The first book-length English-language discussion of the dynamics of the Japamese system of setting technical standards, this volume provides cogent analysis for professionals in manufacturing, quality, and operations management, as well as for executives concerned with the legal aspects of international trade.
