Book Description

The great demonstrations at Seattle and Genoa have shown that we are in a new era of protest. The neo-liberal economic policies pursued by the Group of Seven leading industrial countries and the international institutions they control are provoking widespread resistance. Growing numbers of people in all five continents are rejecting the values of the market and the vision of a world made safe for the multinational corporations. But what does the anti-globalization movement stand for? Is it, as its most common name suggests, against globalization itself? Is it opposed merely to the neo-liberal Washington Consensus that became dominant in the 1980s and 1990s, or is its real enemy the capitalist system itself? The World Social Forum at Porto Alegre has popularized the slogan lsquo;Another World is Possiblersquo;. But what is that world? Alex Callinicos seeks to answer these questions in An Anti-Capitalist Manifesto. He analyses the development of the movement, distinguishes between the different political forces within it, and explores the strategic dilemmas ndash; notably over violence and the nation-state ndash; that it increasingly confronts. He argues that the movement is directed against capitalism itself. The logic of competitive accumulation that drives this system is not only increasing global inequality and economic instability, but threatens ecological catastrophe and appalling conflict. To meet the challenge of global capitalism the new protest movement requires, according to Callinicos, a creative synthesis of its own inclusive and dynamic style and the best of the classical Marxist tradition.

1 out of 5 stars Callinicos presents the argument from the "eat your cake and have it too" crowd........2005-11-03

Alex Callinicos presents argument from the "eat your cake and have it too" crowd. While critical of neo-Liberals, he argues from the same wrong premise, the notion that you can tie the hands of the producers of the world without throttling production.

His chief complaint is not that Capitalism doesn't produce, nor that Capitalism doesn't improve the standard of living for everyone. Rather, Capitalism improves the lives of the poor less than it improves the lives of the rich.

This only makes sense if you think that there's another way to go. Callinicos cannot, and despite attempts, does not, make this case. No one can.

With each turn of the page, I cannot help shouting, within the confines of my own critical mind, "but Capitalism is the best (and only) way to do it!" The "second way", socialism/communism/fascism doesn't work. And the "third way" is just a mix of the power of the first with the poison of the second.

I recommend Dr. Andrew Bernstein's The Capitalist Manifesto as antidote.

1 out of 5 stars Pompous drivel.......2003-08-14

Socialists have a vital contribution to make in the movements of the 21st century. But unless you are in a self-important salon sipping espresso, it is hard to imagine how this slim, arrogant text could have any bearing on the real world.
Disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars A study of contemporary anti-globalization movements.......2003-05-15

An Anti-Capitalist Manifesto by Alex Callinicos (Professor of Politics, University of York, England) is an informed and informative study of contemporary anti-globalization movements. Examining the crucial questions of whether protests against globalization are truly against the capitalist system itself, An Anti-Capitalist Manifesto also dissects the resistance to neo-liberal economic policies embraced by the seven leading industrial countries; makes a persuasive argument that protests worldwide are particularly anti-capitalism; and marks the possibility of synthesizing elements of Marxist tradition into a new world market system that offers more balance, stability, and well-being for all. An Anti-Capitalist Manifesto is a welcome and recommended addition to International Studies, Economic Studies, and Political Science reference collections and supplementary reading lists.

    Book Description

The greatest danger facing the world today, says Alan M. Dershowitz, comes from religiously inspired, state sponsored terrorist groups that seek to develop weapons of mass destruction for use against civilian targets. In his newest book, Dershowitz argues passionately and persuasively that global terrorism is a phenomenon largely of our own making and that we must and can take steps to reduce the frequency and severity of terrorist acts.

5 out of 5 stars This book is great!.......2007-05-19

This book is insightful and well written. Obviously anything written by Alan Dershowitz is going to be amazing, but I found that I share a lot of his views. Before reading this book I felt that terrorism works because our global community rewards it. I continue to feel that way, but I now know of historical instances to back it up.
The depth of story he tells about the reign of terror the Palestinians have led makes me so much more aware. All I hear about today is the war in Iraq, but this book shows that Iraq is not the beginning. It also shows that terrorists get ideas from fellow terrorist organizations.
I feel that this is an important book to read because of the vivid explanations of some of the world's most heinous acts of terror. The book explains how you can prevent terror, how it started, and how to be more aware even if it is not in the news. If you are someone who likes politics, world history, or would just like a general understanding of the intentions of terrorists, this is the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars It works alright..........2007-03-31

Terrorism (the use of fear to persuade and manipulate the masses) works due to the efforts of people like Dershowitz.

When ordered to guard the oil pipelines being aimed in Israel's direction one doesn't need a man who makes his living protecting murderers to explain the ways in which terror works.

1 out of 5 stars Torture is Good for the Commonweal.......2005-11-23

Noted civil libertarian Alan Dershowitz joins forces with noted civil libertarian Dick Cheney in "Why Terrorism Works" and calls for the "judicious" use of torture when dealing with our enemies. According to the Dershowitz/Cheyney school of interrogation, if a foe's testicles are crushed in a vice- a "sterile" vice-then he will tell all. What he will tell is whatever the testicle mashers want to hear so that they will stop mashing his testicles. The good professor has evidently forgotten the hoary old legal chestnut about one drop of ink polluting the whole bottle of milk, usually cited by the trial lawyer asking for a mistrial because a witness has blurted out inadmissable evidence in front of a jury. Torture is wrong, morally and constitutionally. A wee bit of it applied to really bad people is still wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Unfortunately more true today than when the book was published .......2005-09-15

The main thesis of this work is that the international community rewards Terrorism. A good part of the examples presented relate to the tremendous success Palestinian terrorism has had in moving the international community to applaud and reward terror. Today Terrorism is thriving on many different fronts, most of which have some connection with a discontented Islamic group of one kind or another.
Since this book was written we have not seen the international community forcefully take a stand in support of the US in its effort to move Iraq to a democratic future. Instead the Sunni terrorists who are daily murdering their fellow Muslims are rewarded by the support, clandestine or otherwise, of Arab countries.
The Palestinians, who have done more for international terror than any other people, have just been given the prize of having Jews removed from Gaza. Their reaction was the burning of synagogues and promises that they will war against Israel until they have destroyed it completely. For these kind actions they were treated as usual with kid gloves by the Western Media, which has an ambivalent attitude towards terror.
Dershowitz in this book makes recommedations for American policies including the introduction of identity- cards, which he hopes will stem future acts of terror.
Most experts however believe that the cat is already out of the bag, and that the US is filled with sleeper cells , ready to produce the next great mass horror. Let's pray this is not true, and the terrorists have been trying, and have not succeeded to this point.
One more point in this rambling review. The US war on terror is compromised by its support of the Saudi Regime. The Saudi Regime has cultivated Wahhabi Islam which is the main source not only of the Osama Bin- Laden way of thought but of most of the radical Islamic terror in the world. The US has not known how to deal with the Saudi problem. And now has a great threat in terror coming from Iran, the threat of nuclear terror.
Dershowitz does not outline the full range of problems confronting the West in confronting Terror. But he does show how Terror has paid, and has not been stopped.
Unfortunately, if the Western world does not learn to do better against this scourge, all of human civilization , and the worlds of freedom which so many of us have been fortunate to have known all our adult lives, will be severely threatened in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Very well thought out.......2005-02-15

This was an extremely interesting book for me. Although, there are some minor contentions I have with some of the points raised in this book, I believe that torture warrants can have its place. One reviewer shocked me by saying even if the fingernail torture would work, she wouldn't care because it is simply 'wrong' for this country to ever do such a thing. The worst wrong is to know some terrorists have crucial information that can save many innocent American lives, but refuse to talk. If it means saving many American lives from hell and murder, it would be more evil to ignore possibly millions of innocents who have a right to live but may not, as oppossed to worrying about the extreme non-lethal pain under a terrorists fingernails who by confessing important information may help the United States to protect its own. Admittily, this country has soul searching to do regarding why the unbelievable has happened and can happen again which may perhaps be as painful as torture itself. But under the criteria outlined in Dershowitz's book, the controlled torture warrants in very extreme cases is the lesser of the two evils by far.

      Book Description

This is the first book to set out a comprehensive framework by which to understand terrorism as strategy. It contends that even terrorism of the supposedly nihilist variety can be viewed as a bona fide method for distributing means to fulfil the ends of policy, that is, as a strategy.

The main purpose of the work is to describe the dynamics of terrorism and evaluate their effectiveness, as well as to theorize upon, and clarify the correlation between, political ends and terrorist means. The text explains the modus operandi of terrorism, and demonstrates how terrorism relies on manipulating the psychological impact of (usually) relatively small-scale attacks. Using a variety of case studies, The Strategy of Terrorism shows how many campaigns of terrorism end in failure when they lose their power to terrify. The authors spell out what a proper understanding of terrorism as a strategy implies for those who want to make terrorism ineffective, and offer a number of policy recommendations deriveddirectly from their critique.

This is the first contribution of strategic studies to the study of terrorism, and will be of much interest to students of terrorism, strategy and security studies, as well as military professionals and policy makers.

                              Book Description

Once there was a golden age of American thrift, when citizens lived sensibly within their means and worked hard to stay out of debt. The growing availability of credit in this century, however, has brought those days to an end--undermining traditional moral virtues such as prudence, diligence, and the delay of gratification while encouraging reckless consumerism. Or so we commonly believe. In this engaging and thought-provoking book, Lendol Calder shows that this conception of the past is in fact a myth.

Calder presents the first book-length social and cultural history of the rise of consumer credit in America. He focuses on the years between 1890 and 1940, when the legal, institutional, and moral bases of today's consumer credit were established, and in an epilogue takes the story up to the present. He draws on a wide variety of sources--including personal diaries and letters, government and business records, newspapers, advertisements, movies, and the words of such figures as Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, and P. T. Barnum--to show that debt has always been with us. He vigorously challenges the idea that consumer credit has eroded traditional values. Instead, he argues, monthly payments have imposed strict, externally reinforced disciplines on consumers, making the culture of consumption less a playground for hedonists than an extension of what Max Weber called the "iron cage" of disciplined rationality and hard work.

Throughout, Calder keeps in clear view the human face of credit relations. He re-creates the Dickensian world of nineteenth-century pawnbrokers, takes us into the dingy backstairs offices of loan sharks, into small-town shops and New York department stores, and explains who resorted to which types of credit and why. He also traces the evolving moral status of consumer credit, showing how it changed from a widespread but morally dubious practice into an almost universal and generally accepted practice by World War II. Combining clear, rigorous arguments with a colorful, narrative style, Financing the American Dream will attract a wide range of academic and general readers and change how we understand one of the most important and overlooked aspects of American social and economic life.

4 out of 5 stars appealing, easy to grasp the credit revolution.......2005-04-01

Calder book is an appealing read. I must agree with other reviews that this is usually not a very interesting subject, finance and credit, but Calder presents it in an interesting matter that can be quite witty at times. The reader will see how Victorian money management ideas of the past were largely accepted passively by most but only actually followed by few. Credit has existed since before this countries foundation argues Calder and he details the progression of credit systems to present times.

I used Calder's book in one of my History courses and found it to be thorough, even-handed and timely. Calder's prose style is remarkably engaging; students had no trouble navigating the text and discerning the major points. It's a gripping read, but also tremendously informative as well. If you have time to read only one book on the development of consumerism and consumer values, this is it. In fact, I have read few books that I consider a better "window" on the shaping of modern American culture.

4 out of 5 stars The History of the Dream.......2001-09-29

Calder covers what can be a dry subject in an interesting manner. He follows the history of consumer credit from the early 19th century up to the period of the New Deal. The book discusses the evolving attitudes toward credit and debt and the products that eventually revolutionized the system of consumer credit. It is well documented and illustrated. A surprisingly good read for what can be a boring subject.
