    Book Description

The aim of this book is to provide researchers in economics, finance, and statistics with an up-to-date introduction to applying Bayesian techniques to empirical studies. It covers the full range of the new numerical techniques which have been developed over the last thirty years, notably: Monte Carlo sampling, antithetic replication, importance sampling, and Gibbs sampling. The author covers both advances in theory and modern approaches to numerical and applied problems. The book includes applications drawn from a variety of different fields within economics and also provides a quick overview to the underlying statistical ideas of Bayesian thought. The result is a book which presents a roadmap of applied economic questions that can now be addressed empirically with Bayesian methods. Consequently, many researchers will find this a readily readable survey of this growing research topic.

The American criminal-justice system, writes Georgetown law professor David Cole, has effectively become a two-tiered system, with differing levels of regard depending on the race or class of a given citizen who comes into contact with it. The thousands of African Americans who have been confronted by law-enforcement agents nationwide for "fitting the description" of alleged perpetrators would likely concur, but, according to Cole, it isn't just the cops that operate this way; judges, prosecutors, juries, and legislators are equally complicit. If the barrage of illustrative cases he presents in No Equal Justice paints a picture of an antidemocratic society, his proposed solution--making the criminal-justice system more "community-based," strengthening the relationships between citizens to "stop" crime before it starts--holds out a promise of equality. Critics may argue that such a plan is unrealistic, but the problems he describes are all too real, and deserve the attention No Equal Justice provides.

    Book Description

Now in paperback, a devastating critique of race- and class-based inconsistencies in the American criminal justice system. In a hard-hitting study hailed by Publishers Weekly as "well-argued" and "passionate," leading constitutional scholar David Cole reveals that, despite a veneer of neutrality, race- and class-based double standards operate in virtually every criminal justice setting, from police behavior, to jury selection, to sentencing. These double standards allow the privileged to enjoy constitutional protections from police power without paying the costs associated with extending those protections across the board to minorities and the poor. But they also inflict even greater costs on society, by compromising the legitimacy of the criminal justice system, and by exacerbating racial divisions nationally. No Equal Justice offers specic suggestions for moving beyond the inconsistencies we have tolerated, and concludes with a powerful argument for rebuilding the sense of community that is so essential to a safe and healthy society.

5 out of 5 stars Make time for this book........2000-01-25

This is a book that needs to be read both by those who are interested in the relations between races in this country and those who think they are not. It is a scholarly but easily readable and compelling description of the insidious effects of race in the administration of criminal justice in this country.

    5 out of 5 stars Important stuff -- and a good read........1999-12-04

Poor people and people of color suffer systematic injustice and harrassment at the hands of the criminal justice system. David Cole articulates the ways in which each injustice compounds the effect of the next -- from police brutality and racial profiling on the streets to jury selection and racist application of the death penalty. Unlike the average legal scholar, he writes with a style that is accessible and compelling.

2 out of 5 stars Great thesis, very poorly written.......1999-04-13

When I read the review of this book in the New York Times Book Review, reprinted in the Chicago Law Bulletin (I am an attorney), I ran to several bookstores to find it. Almost at once I was disappointed at the sophomoric analysis and use of sources such as Newsweek and the New York Times. David Cole is pretty much dead on in the premise of each of his chapters, though I agree with the other reader that he may place too much blame on the Supreme Court. What is truely dissapointing is the shallowness and one-sidedness of his arguments along with his use of unreliable sources of information. The writing seems to me to be on the level of a college student, not a Georgetown University law professor. Which is very disappointing, because what he is saying needs to be said.

    4 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK.......1999-03-27

This book is a good starter book for students of criminal justice-while the book blames too much on the Supreme Court it still shows the biases real well within our system of justice. The book could spend a little more time on solutions-case examples and the minority problems which cause crime within our society-but this is a good book overall.

        Book Description

The year 2003 marked the tenth anniversary of the first use of the acronym "Stat" (also written "STAT") in the scientific literature for a family of transcription factors which rapidly transduce cytokine and growth factor-elicited signals from the plasma membrane to the cell nucleus thereby activating gene transcription (thus, Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription).

The only fully comprehensive reference for what is known about STAT proteins and their biology, this book describes the current state of ongoing research in this broad area, and looks toward the future to try to predict the discoveries that lie ahead. With contributions from the very best experts in the field, it will prove useful to both the novice and the expert, providing a didactic overview of the STAT transcription factor field, a summary of past literature, current developments, and new uncharted, perhaps controversial, ideas and questions about STAT activation and biology.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but very basic.......2007-06-04

Context: I'm in year four of starting my own business. I managed to lose money my first year, make a modest amount in year two, and am doing well now. I've read several small business planning books and this is among the most approachable of them, but there isn't anything overly new here. If you are thinking of starting a business or recently have started one, and you have not read any books - this would be an excellent choice. If you have already read a few books, you probably don't need this one, as it doesn't cover anything new. If you have been up and running in your business for a while and you are doing well, it's fairly likely that you are doing most of the key things in the book and you won't get any new ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, yet digestible tools needed for small busines.......1999-01-14

Tom's book covers all the major aspects of running a small business. It's very readable. I've got an MBA, and this summarizes (and told me things i didn't know) better than that education. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I am beating the odds..........1998-09-16

I was turned on to this book by a good friend towards the end of 1996 when I was a frustrated employee in the world of corporate bozos. I started reading the book with the intent to someday open my own business.

January 7, 1997 before I finished reading the book, I opened International Consulting Solutions, Inc. (ICS) and have not looked back. In fact, I am embarassed to say that I have not finished reading the book. Who has the time, my business is doing well and I barely have time to sleep.

While my education, experience, contacts and talents have a lot to do with the success of ICS, I do owe much of it the Mr. Culley and his dead-on-balls accurate attitude enhancement book.

        Thank you Mr. Culley.

Sincerely, Rolando Calzadilla President - ICS

Another budget book that won't help you at all if you have big debt problems (The author admits this himself.)

The Bill Buster "System" in this book works only if you already have sufficient income to cover your bills.

5 out of 5 stars Bill Busters Book Review.......2002-05-30

After reading Bill Busters it became increasingly clear that I have applied many of the same disciplines in my own personal management of money. I think the beauty of the money mangement tips is that everyone can identify with them. The book is a "Back to Basics" approach to paying bills and managing your money rather than spending your money and trying to play "catch up" to pay bills. It is a short read with plenty of fire power that one can immediately apply to helping you gain control of your finances.

5 out of 5 stars Bill Busters is a hit!.......2002-03-25

I think this book is filled with practical and easy to use advise for any family, no matter the income level. It is an approach that can be implemented and put into use immediately! The result is that families can have a sense of empowerment over their finances instead of their finances keeping them hostage. Mr. Barretto has written a book that is sure to be a winner. Thank you! Joanne M. Brennan

5 out of 5 stars What every service member needs to know about budgeting.......2002-03-15

It's not easy making ends meet on a military pay scale. I wish I'd read this book 20 years ago as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. As far as I'm concerned, the military should make Bill Busters standard issue for everyone in the armed services-it provides the necessary insight to establish a budget and live within it.
