    Book Description

In this brilliant and immensely readable book, Lawrence M. Friedman tells the whole fascinating story of American law from its beginnings in the colonies to the present day. By showing how close the life of the law is to the economic and political life of the country, he makes a complex subject understandable and engrossing. A History of American Law presents the achievements and failures of the American legal system in the context of America's commercial and working world, family practices, and attitudes toward property, government, crime, and justice.

Now completely revised and updated, this groundbreaking work incorporates new material regarding slavery, criminal justice, and twentieth-century law. For laymen and students alike, this remains the only comprehensive authoritative history of American law.

I had to treat this book like a text book. Read a little here and there. Thoroughly researched, it provides the reader with a detailed history of American law. This book is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars History - To The EXTREME.......2006-02-07

My first reaction after finishing the book, was to ask myself how anyone could have enough time to put so much information together. As the cover states, this "book touches every conceivable aspect of law...it is a stupendous achievement." The author takes an insurmountable task and first breaks it up into four sections, Part 1: American Law in the colonial Period, Part 2: Revolution to the Middle of the 19th century, Part 3: Close of the 19th century, Part 4: The 20th century. Within each part he segments chapters into readable legal topics. (i.e. Corporations, Crime and Punishment, etc). In that way, the reader gets an understanding of the period and how it effects all sorts of law, before going onto another time period and seeing how other areas of the law grew and affected other areas.

Although the republic split from England, the author reviews how attached the our legal system continued to be and all the reasons why this was so. (All the legal treatises and cases were only printed about English law for quite some time). He also discusses why certain areas of the law, nonetheless, quickly grew away. (i.e. the are lots of navigable seaways in America, not so many in England). This is just a small sampling of a tremendous source of information.

The study of law present a tremendous number of apparent inconsistencies, non-sequitors, and just beyond the reasonable conundrums. The author tremendous dedication to this work really sorts out these issues buy showing the development and goals through the history of the Union. (And why the Socratic method is everywhere, much to the consternations of L1s everywhere)

Of course such a treaties requires a good effort to read, assimilate, and remember. Should you decide to read it in a bar on say, a lunch break, you get lots of curious questions, puzzled looks, and few invitations to dates, so be warned. Nonetheless, highly recommended for the all the people in this country that are interested in US history and legal history; yes, I recommend it to both of us.

5 out of 5 stars readable and worthwhile.......2005-08-22

If this edition is at all like the 2nd edition (what I am inferring from) then it will be a very readable history of American law up to 1900. It's something of a social history given the wealth of information on how law affected the family, the early commerce of the Republic, and industrial growth (and suffering it caused, see the chapter on torts). It is something of a social history. The early chapters on colonial law are a bit tough but are worth comparing to the changes that would follow. If you're at all interested in the law and how U.S. society evolved (and did harm, at times) this book and its sequel, American Law in the 20th Century, is very much worthwhile.

      Book Description

This new edition of Norgren and Nanda's classic updates their examination of the intersection of American cultural pluralism and law. They document and analyze legal challenges to the existing social order raised by many cultural groups, among them, Native Americans and Native Hawaiians, homeless persons, immigrants, disabled persons, and Rastafarians. In addition, they examine such current controversies as the culture wars in American schools and the impact of post-9/11 security measures on Arab and Muslim individuals and communities. The book also discusses more traditional challenges to the American legal system by women, homosexuals, African Americans, Latinos, Japanese Americans, and the Mormons and the Amish. The new chapters and updated analyses in this Third Edition reflect recent, relevant court cases dealing with culture, race, gender, religion, and personal status. Drawing on court materials, state and federal legislation, and legal ethnographies, the text analyzes the ongoing tension between, on the one hand, the need of different groups for cultural autonomy and equal rights, and on the other, the necessity of national unity and security. The text integrates the authors' commentary with case descriptions set in historical, cultural, political, and economic context. While the authors' thesis is that law is an instrument of social policy that has generally furthered an assimilationist agenda in American society, they also point out how in different periods, under different circumstances, and with regard to different groups, law has also some opportunity for cultural autonomy.

5 out of 5 stars Handy Reference Guide.......2007-09-11

A very handy reference guide, as well as an excellent starting point for the convoluted history of US/Indian Treaties, and Acts. It is chronoligically ordered, and contains synopses of the Treaties and Acts. The next book I'd like to find is a summary of the extent to which all treaties have been violated by the US government.

4 out of 5 stars long needed and necessary for indian history.......2000-01-25

This book has been a Godsend to me for researching specific Native American legislation. The book saved me weeks of time by zeroing in on specific congressional legislation germaine to Native Americans. The book is clear and concise enough to give any researcher the actual law or document related to N.A. History

          Book Description

Many fine books exist that explain to authors how to self-publish. Make Money Self-Publishing shows them how to make money doing it. Readers are introduced to the publishing world and its jargon in Chapter One, Self-Publishing 101. Then the following chapters introduce readers to a variety of small publishers. They range in age, marital status, physical location, subject matter, and favorite marketing approaches, but they are all profitable. Readers will discover how to start their business on a shoestring if necessary (Chapter Seven), sell tens of thousands of cookbooks (Chapter Three), or plunge into the world of e-books (Chapter Fifteen). The appendices supply contact information for printer and self-publisher associations across the country, recommended books, useful web sites, and more. Particular topics can be found easily and quickly by referencing the comprehensive index.

          Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars pep talk by a self-publisher.......2007-04-11

This book lacks the details of publishing. No how-tos, no business aspects of publishing, or what to publish. It's a compilation of talks with minor writers.
And as you guess, the author herself is a self-publisher.

Better read "Complete Guide to Self Publishing" by Tom Ross and Marilyn Ross. You get much more with less money.

Technical note: For those who are not familiar with publishing industry, books without discount at Amazon are usually not commercially worth to publish. They include small quanity and self-published books. Commercially worth means publisher can commit because they think they can sell minimum print run of 3,000 copies which is industry standard.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting especially for people already publishing.......2006-03-15

Very good real-world stories from small independent publishers. In most cases, the publisher saw a need for a book -- on touring New Jersey, or hiking, or buying a horse, or serving educational niches -- and began with the premise of wanting to provide information and ideas not already "out there." What inevitably follows is a collision with the reality of a crowded and brutal marketplace, and "Make Money Self-Publishing" shows the creative ways each publisher pursued to create a livelihood.

An earlier reviewer found the book depressing -- I found it inspiring. I would say to anyone with a pipe dream of making a fortune from their book to take a good look at this and other books on self-publishing, learn that it is a battle royal even to break even, and to instead pursue publishing as a way of spreading new ideas. Hopefully Suzanne's book will demonstrate that this may lead to you making a livelihood as well, but only if you go into this field with your eyes wide open.

3 out of 5 stars Not really a "learn how" book.......2005-12-28

If you are considering self publiching then this is a nice book to have, especially if you are a fan of real life stories. The 14 author/publishers all tell their stories without hype. Most took a very long time to receive a return on their investment and explain but also show that after years they are now all getting paid regularly without having to do an awful lot. I like that the book is realistic in this sense.

Certainly, there are a few tips and pointers throughout but this really isn't a "how to" book. It is a collection of real life stories that you may be able to pick some pearls of wisdom from.

1 out of 5 stars Don't read this book if you don't want to be discouraged!.......2004-04-16

I thought this book was going to be inspirational with tips and Do's and Don't from other self-publishers. This book made me rethink me self-employment and self-publishing dreams.
Almost every one didn't make any money for years and the book was depressing and boring.
It show the reality of working for yourself, which will cause some people not to take risk.
          Read it and refund it.

          4 out of 5 stars Fourteen Real-world Examples........2004-01-09

Despite the somewhat pedestrian title Make Money Self-Publishing has significant impact on the reader. Foutreen successful self-publishers tell us their stories--their failures as well as their successes--what worked and what didn't. For those interested in the self-publishing field this is fascinating reading.

The stories are varied. One author updates and reissues a single title year after year; others have extensive backlists. Some publish only their own work, others have parlayed their success into publishing the work of others. The abiding lessons are: there is no single formula for success, rules are made to be broken, and often the key element for success is discovered by accident.

Prefacing the fourteen tales is a chapter called "Self-Publishing 101" which outlines succinctly much of the material told in greater detail in the other books reviewed in this collection.

Ironically it is the tale written by an E-book publsher that highlights the continuing need for paper books. Through that story we found an Ebook publisher well-suited to our needs. Internet searches had not come up with this information.

We are very high on this book. Libraries should order one.

            Book Description

Sustainable development and environmental improvement are often regarded as intrinsically valuable a priori. As a result, the policies by which these goals are to be attained is often inadequately scrutinised. In this book, ecological economics addresses the institutional and policymaking aspects of environmental problems, thus covering a broad socioeconomic research agenda, in contradistinction to mainstream economic approaches. The approach advocated here is open to differing viewpoints on the same issue, sees conflict resolution as a social process, and accepts the need for research into political-economic issues, according a prominent position to the aims of society itself. An in-depth analysis of the policy process is followed in order to understand the pitfalls and barriers that will confront society on the road to sustainable development. Readership: The broad approach advocated will appeal to all involved in environmental problems - decision makers, NGO members, and academic scholars.

Such information and sample chapters are available at their website. I rank this book a 5 star book because the insights/examples provided far outweigh any concerns/problems I found with the book. This book caused me to look at domain names from a different perspective.

The book is segmented into four different sections. They are: Quality Naming Styles, Inferior Naming Styles (to avoid), How to buy from speculators/at auctions/brokers and miscellaneous topics at the end. Each section has approximately 20, one or two page subsections explaining the topic. What it does offer is quick, easy to read "business nuggets" that are a page or so in length.

I loved How To Select & Buy an Elite Domain Name for the following reasons:

            1. It flat out states the importance of marketing & branding in choosing a business domain name. A brand or name is in the mind of the prospect. If you can build a powerful name brand, you will have a powerful marketing program. If you can't, then all the advertising, fancy graphics, sales promotion and public relations in the world won't help you achieve your objective.

            2. Excellent examples of business/domain naming stupidity/effectiveness are provided. These insights, in my opinion, are quite on the nose, and he brings up good points.

            3. He talks about the plethora of websites that are produced each year and the need to be memorable.

            4. He discusses how names must get inside a consumer's mind.

            5. The book was very easy to read - short, with examples.

I disliked How To Select & Buy an Elite Domain Name for the following reasons:

            1. The price for, at best, a hundred-page book.

            2. At times it reads like a college textbook, fair to all sides, but no absolute directions. Books by other consultants sometimes border on arrogance - my way is the right way.

            3. It's NOT ideal for Internet-BEGINNERS seeking to learn what is a domain name. It's more a hundred-page executive report than a book filled with reference information. The author often refers beginners to the Internet for more information instead of explaining it.

Conclusion: Buy the book IF you are looking for an elite domain name. It is well worth the time and money.

5 out of 5 stars A great how-to book, with lots of information and examples........2002-11-22

I found "How to Select & Buy an Elite Domain Name" a quick read that thoroughly covers selecting, valuing, and purchasing a domain name. The book is short, but it is packed with information and examples. It is well organized and easy to read.

If you are choosing a new domain name for the first time, this book will help you avoid many common mistakes like using numbers and words that sound alike. If the name you want is already registered, this book will help you with strategies to find an alternative and probably better domain name.

The book is definitely worth the price if you are planning on buying a domain name from a cybersquatter or speculator. After reading this book, I was able to confidently and logically negotiate a fair price from a speculator for the domain name I wanted.
