Epstein's book was one of the first to provide a concise intro to bankruptcy law. A number of students have found Bankruptcy And Debtor/creditor: Examples And Explanations (Examples & Explanations) easier to understand with regard to Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. For an introduction to Chapter 11, the book that is getting great reviews is: Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers.

All three authors know their stuff.

    4 out of 5 stars Law Student's Opinion.......2007-01-10

I used this Nutshell to help create my outline and fill in holes towards the end of the semester. I thought the book was well-organized and appreciated its explanation of confusing code sections. I wish I had purchased this book earlier in the semester since using it thoughout the class would have been beneficial. Summary: Much like other Nutshells - very helpful!

1 out of 5 stars Better guides are available.......2006-12-31

This is probably the worst of the guides available for bankruptcy law. It seems to have been put together in a hurry, maybe to be the first guide on the market to address the 2005 amendments. I had to look else where after being disappointed with this and prefer the following:

    1. Baird's Elements of Bankruptcy (awesome!)
    2. Blum's Examples & Explanations

    1 out of 5 stars Mad .......2006-03-07

I was tricked into thinking this was the new book that covered the new code! If it isn't the 2005 edition with the blue cover.....then don't put the #$@#$#$ 2005 edition cover on display!!!!!!!!!

    Amazon really SUCKS sometimes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY - OLD EDITION.......2005-10-22

2005 Amendments are not in the burgundy colored BNK law book - they are in the new one. The cover is blue. The burgundy colored one in OLD law. Buy the new blue one (2005) that has the new amendments in it.

          1 out of 5 stars A cartoonish oversimplification of a complex subject.......1998-07-13

What do you look for in a business book? If you answered weird-looking fonts, cartoonish graphics, and breezy text, then Bob Adams' "Streetwise Small Business Start-Up" may be for you.

Bob went to Harvard, but don't worry, this book won't be over your head. Mr. Adams' tips are long on folksy charm and short on hard facts. Often, he simply points out the obvious. Example (p.99): "Consumers tend to pay a lot more attention to feature coverage in newspapers, television, and radio than they do to advertising." You don't say, Bob?

Mr. Adams tries to jazz up his limp writing by using strange fonts and dingbats, plenty of (uninformative) graphics, and even tilting whole pages diagonally, but these gimmicks merely underscore the book's emptiness. The graphics throughout are as vapid are as the text, and look like they were snatched from a bargain-basement clip-art collection.

Would-be entrepreneurs, do yourself a favor and buy a different book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent foundation book-hits a lick on all aspects........1998-06-17

Great reference book for starting a business. Covers all aspects from accounting & tax issues to marketing, and much more. I heartily recommend this book in all my seminars. Very useful three way presentation style: in depth; Q & A; and stories with graphics. One of them is bound to match your learning style.

            Book Description

Thoroughly revised and updated, this text provides the basic economic tools for students to understand the problems facing the countries of Latin America. In this third edition, Patrice Franko analyzes challenges to the neoliberal model of development and highlights recent macroeconomic changes in the region. Including charts and tables with the most current data available, the book also offers a wealth of new boxed discussions and vignettes. After a brief historical overview, Franko builds a contemporary model of regional development. She explores the contradictions of growth, especially in the context of overcoming intractable problems of poverty, education, health, and discrimination. Franko focuses on factors of competitiveness, including labor markets, technology, and infrastructure challenges. Liberally interspersed with examples and case studies, the author successfully combines theory and its application in the real world.

            Customer Reviews:

            4 out of 5 stars A useful textbook........2007-01-12

This is probably the most useful all-round textbook on Latin American economic challenges currently on the market. An important strength is its comprehensiveness: unlike some alternatives, Franko does not dwell on issues of macroeconomic management to the exclusion of important socioeconomic issues such as education, health, rural development, and inequality. The book is evidently designed to support a one semester course, and could be used for either advanced undergraduates or graduate students.

Franko's text is not without its weaknesses. The updating of macro developments from the first edition was undertaken somewhat randomly. Discussions of different viewpoints on Latin American development issues sometimes make overly schematic use of stock figures ("the structuralist", "the neoliberal") that risk becoming caricatures. There is no discussion of the so-called "Washington Consensus" as a whole (indeed the term does not appear in the index). And Franko discusses the thesis of secular decline in commodity prices in an uncritical manner that suggests she may be unaware of recent more skeptical analyses. This said, the book does not suffer from obvious systematic biases, and makes a good-faith effort to present different viewpoints without forcing them down the reader's throat.

            4 out of 5 stars A Completely Finished Puzzle.......2001-02-10

"The Puzzle of Latin American Economic Development" is, most of all, an incredible clear book. By beggining with a review of the differences between the concepts of economic development and economic growth, Patrice Franko places the study of the Latin American economy in its appropiate framework. The analysis of the historical evolution, while simple, gives a solid overview of many of the roots of the current economic and social problems of the area. Finally, her wide analysis of typical areas of economic development such as agriculture, health and education highlights problems that are sometimes forgotten by the political actors. It is an indispensable book for those who want to get initiated in the fascinating subject of Latin American Economic Development.

Expenditure by UK businesses on Internet software and services was worth 4.97bn in 2001, and is predicted to grow by 37.8% in 2002. If spending on intranets and extranets is included, the total spend rises to 9.37bn in 2001, increasing by a forecast 34.8% in 2002. At present, the Internet is seen as a strategic business asset that is to be exploited for commercial gain. Consequently, revenue from electronic commerce (e-commerce) and advertising on the Internet is growing rapidly, reaching 90.19bn in 2001, and is expected to rise by 55.5% in 2002. This report considers business usage of, and spending on, the Internet. It also briefly covers related areas such as intranets and extranets. The focus of the report is on two areas: business expenditure on Internet software and services (including connectivity) and business revenues from the commercialisation of the Internet (i.e. revenues from advertising on the Internet and e-commerce). Business spending on the Internet is increasingly focused on non-connectivity services and e-commerce activities, while the bulk of e-commerce revenue represents income from business-to-business (B2B) commercial activities.

                    Book Description

This is inspiring reading for policy makers seeking to implement the provisions of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in their countries.--Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director General of the World Health Organization

Currently, there are over 1.2 billion tobacco users in the world, most in developing countries. Once a problem primarily in high-income countries, disease and death from tobacco use has increasingly become a burden for developing countries as well. The tobacco epidemic is one of the leading causes of preventable death and disability in the world today. However, mitigating the devastating health damage caused by tobacco use is made especially difficult by nicotine's powerfully addictive properties, low prices of tobacco products, and the constant, often subtle reinforcement of social norms and encouragement to smoke through billions of dollars of advertising each year.

This book contains the stories of six countries - Brazil, Bangladesh, Canada, Poland, South Africa, and Thailand. These countries, selected to provide global geographical representation, are in different stages of the tobacco epidemic and the strength and history of their tobacco control policies vary considerably. Each has achieved notable success in tobacco control policy-making, basing advocacy and policies on sound research and evidence.

Tobacco Control Policy relates the strategies, success stories and setbacks in developing tobacco control policies in order to assist people grappling with similar issues in other countries. This book provides a collection of experiences in diverse economic, social and political situations which demonstrate the varied and important roles played by activists, health practitioners, policymakers, researchers, NGOs, politicians, and the press.

                      Book Description

The vision of a global future spread through the world like wildfire in the last decade - exhilarating for some, alarming for others, apparently inexorable for all. As free-market advocates would have it, "there is no alternative…"

"Reclaiming the Future" tells a different story - that globalization is not inevitable, invincible or intrinsically good. The deregulated global economy has proved highly unstable. The pursuit of unending growth is unsustainable, and the social damage that free markets cause is provoking an international backlash.

Jane Kelsey explores the impact of globalization on the New Zealand economy. Her account of foreign investment and free trade policies, the role of the transnationals, and the challenges posed by global agreements and networks will open the eyes of readers. Reclaiming the Future opens wide the debate New Zealanders are seeking for the direction of their country in the twenty-first century.
