Book Description
This book contains twelve essays on a variety of philosophical subjects. Among the various philosophical inquiries which Mr. Watts' younger studies had committed to writing, these few escaped the injuries of time and other accidents, and by the persuasion of a learned friend, they are offered to the public. Some of the subjects treated in these essays include space, substance, body and spirit. Also, a Brief Scheme of Ontology or the Science of Being. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty, faded or difficult to read. Written in Old English.
Book Description
A tale more riveting than fiction, Storming the Court is the true story of idealistic law students who challenged the United States government in a battle for freedom and human rights that went all the way to the Supreme Court -- and resonates today more than ever.
In 1992, three hundred innocent men, women, and children who had qualified for political asylum in the United States were forced into a detention camp at the American naval base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and told they might never be freed. Storming the Court takes readers inside this modern-day atrocity to tell the tale of Yvonne Pascal -- a young, charismatic activist -- and other Haitian refugees who had fled their violent homeland only to end up prisoners at Guantánamo. They had no lawyers, no contact with the outside world, and no hope...except for a band of students at Yale Law School fifteen hundred miles away.
Led by Harold Koh, a gifted but untested law professor, these remarkable twentysomethings waged a legal war against two U.S. presidents to defend the Constitution and the principles symbolized by the Statue of Liberty. It was an education in law unlike any other. With the refugees' lives at stake, the students threw aside classes and career plans to fight an army of government attorneys in a case so politically volatile that the White House itself intervened in the legal strategy.
Featuring a real-life cast that includes Kenneth Starr and other top Justice Department officials, U.S. marines, radical human-rights lawyers, and Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Storming the Court follows the students from the classrooms at Yale to the prison camp at Guantánamo to the federal courts in New York and Washington as they struggle to save Yvonne Pascal and her fellow Haitian refugees.
At a time when the treatment of post-9/11 Guantánamo detainees has been challenged in the public arena and the courts, this book traces the origins of the legal battle over America's use of the naval base as a prison and illuminates the troubling ways that politics can influence legal decisions. Above all, though, Storming the Court is the David-and-Goliath story of a group of passionate law students who took on their government in the name of the greatest of American values: freedom.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous! .......2007-09-08
Normally I wouldn't consider a legal work like this, but after continually hearing Storming the Court's a must read, I finally picked it up. It's a completely engaging story - I couldn't put it down.
Horribly Biased.......2007-02-17
I am not a conservative, laugh at the Daily Show, consider minority rights important, etc. However, I am not a blinded-by-the-light zealot for leftist causes. This book requires you to be so. I bought it based on the "best-seller" basis in University bookstores and the fact I graduated from law school two years ago and practice law now and thought it would be a fascinating read, seeing as it was billed as non-fiction. The hatred for all things non-leftist leaning in this book is unreal - the main characters, their depictions as champions for all that is right, giving every single citizen of every single country rights under the US constitution, no matter how far away from our borders they are, and I'm not talking about prisoners or anyone else under U.S. control - just people left to their own devices outside the U.S.A. I agree the Haitians should have been granted asylum under the treaties and guidelines of the U.S. in the 1990's, but the way this story is related literally makes me too disgusted to read it even though I'm interested in the story. I would compare it to sitting across a table from a couple making out and making cooing sounds at each other while simultaneously playing Kenny G love songs on a stereo and the room bathed in soft pink lights. Even if you liked these people, they would make you sick to your stomach. This is how this book is written. I like the story, but I literally cannot read it as it is written, and I'm NOT RIGHT LEANING, it's just so biased it's disgusting. I despise Rush Limbaugh for the same reasons - he's so biased when he presents "facts" that he may as well be holding hands and skipping with Karl Rove. Don't read this book - it's not a realistic depiction of HOW law school actually works, even Yale; the light the story is cast in did not occur in reality as it is depicted in the book.
Give Grisham a rest.......2006-09-11
Storming the Court is a real-life account of a band of idealistic law students who take it upon themselves to represent Haitian refugees that are being held in military confinement in Guantánamo Bay. With the aid of a professor (Harold Koh, currently the dean of Yale Law School) and some outside attorneys, these students take on the United States government in a seemingly impossible case. The story switches from the students to the government to the refugees, giving the reader a solid understanding of each side of the case. Goldstein does an excellent job making complex international law comprehendible to the average reader. He paints an extensive picture as he touches on the chaos in Haiti, the conditions within the refugee camp, and the battles within the courts. As a conservative, I felt Goldstein did a great job at telling all sides of the story. I understand the players and their cause was somewhat liberal, but the value of human lives shouldn't be limited to political affiliation. There were people from every side of the spectrum, from radical leftists to corporate bureaucrats (though most were unquestionably lefties).
Despite the fact this book is nonfiction, it reads like a novel and carries with it an aura of suspense. I highly recommend for anyone remotely interested in law or human rights. If you like John Grisham novels, I suggest you give them a rest and read the real thing. You won't be sorry. Brandt Goldstein has produced a work that is both informative and entertaining to read. It may even make you second-guess some of your opinions regarding the recent immigration that has been taking place in the United States. However (like the flap reads) more than anything this is a David and Goliath story, a story where a determined band of students use the law to overcome the world's most powerful government and free a group of desperate people.
According to Brandt Goldstein's website, Warner Brothers received the filmmaking rights to Storming the Court and have Michael Seitzman slated to write and direct the movie. I am unaware of which stage it is in, but I wholeheartedly agree that this would make an excellent picture. In any case, take some time and give this book a try.
Fantastic Inspirational Book for Any Young Lawyer.......2006-02-17
I am a 3L about to graduate from law school and this book makes me want to shake off law firm salaries for the sake of making a change in this world. In less grandious terms, it makes me proud to be a future lawyer.
I saw Brandt Goldstein speak just before reading the book and he mentioned that he wrote the book to read like a legal thriller. I was not disappointed in this respect. He parallels the plight of the Haitians with the efforts of the law students. Politics, Legal Procedure, Trial strategy, and diplomacy are all addressed in an entertaining narrative. The cover gives away the ending but the value of this book lies in the way the author pulls the reader into full identification with amatuer lawyers. Although it is a must read for all lawyers, anyone would find enjoyment from this short read.
I couldn't put it down!.......2006-02-04
Not since reading "A Civil Action" have I been as swept into a legal thriller. Brandt Goldstein takes a remarkable story and turns it into a remarkable book. You feel like you are there --with the students at Yale and the refugees at Guantanamo -- and you can't wait to find out what happens next. Superb writing. Engrossing storytelling. "Storming the Court" was recently named one of the top ten nonfiction books of the year (Kirkus Reviews). A must-read for lawyers and non-lawyers alike.

Book Description
The sweet cherry is one of the most popular of temperate fruit crops and is grown commercially in more than 40 countries around the world. The sour cherry is cultivated in fewer countries, mainly in Europe and the USA, and is used mainly in processed cherry products. Until recently, horticultural improvement of cherries as a commercial crop has been slow, and major production problems such as bird damage, rain-induced cracking, and bacterial diseases, have remained. However, in the last 25 years major developments have occurred. New improved varieties of sweet cherry have been bred which have larger fruit, are more disease resistant and set fruit more reliably. Improved sour cherry varieties have also been bred and mechanized systems of harvesting introduced. New dwarfing rootstocks are now being released. This book provides a comprehensive review of all of these topics and many more. It covers all aspects of the botany, production and uses of sweet and sour cherries, and represents a definitive reference work for students and research workers in horticulture as well as professional fruit growers.

Precise and to the point. The author gave an indepth analyses of the janitorial business from his point of view. Mr.Kravitz did a good job in explaining how to value a janitorial company in an event you decide to sell your company.

Book Description
Why do American state economies grow at such vastly different rates and manifest such wide differences in living standards? Volatile States identifies the sources of rising living standards by examining the recent economic and fiscal history of the American states. With new insights about the factors that contribute to state economic success, the book departs from traditional analyses of economic performance in its emphasis on the role of volatility.
Volatile States identifies institutions and policies that are key determinants of economic success and illustrates the considerable promise of a mean-variance criterion for assessing state economic performance. The mean-variance perspective amends applications of growth models that rely on the mobility of productive factors keyed to income levels alone. Simply measuring the level of growth in state economies reveals an incomplete and perhaps distorted picture of performance. Taking the volatility of state economies explicitly into account refines the whole notion of "economic success."
This book is essential reading for economists, political scientists, and policy-makers who routinely confront questions about the consequences of alternative institutional arrangements and economic policy choices.
W. Mark Crain is Professor of Economics and Research Associate, James M. Buchanan Center for Political Economy, George Mason University.

Customer Reviews:
don't be fooled.......2007-10-09
The book and workbook are helpful, but don't be fooled into purchasing the online version. Customer Service is horrible. You will have the opportunity to try a 30-day "free" trial but not without inputing your credit card #. The program walks you through step by step on setting up your account however it makes it nearly impossible to cancel your subscription. And forget speaking with live customer service, everything is done through live chat and e-mail. And you certainly won't recieve any notification that your "free" subscription is coming to an end. This program will cancel your enrollment but not without charging you your initial subscription fee. Mvelopes intentionally traps you into using their online budget system because they recognize that anyone with the book and pen and paper can budget their finances more efficiently than their online service.
A kick in the nutz..........2007-09-30
Wow. What a wakeup call. This week saw the very worst of my two toddlers' behavior, my loaded Suburban SUV stolen and a few other pivotal moments. What I am coming away with after 50 pages of this book - my kids have too much. I spend too much on them. I am creating monsters. I am humbled. Fortunately, we have way too much disposable income, but after reading this book - the excess is going to go to micro loans and more community compassion - NOT TO BUYING more crap for my kids. Lessons learned. This was the kick in the azz I needed. THIS from a big believer in YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE philosophy, still I had let things slide VERY wrong when it came to my kids. WOW. This book helped me see some habits I was creating for my family that were NOT life affirming. I am going to change as a result of reading this book. Can you give a higher recommendation?
Wow.......2007-02-17
This was a very good book - I suggest it to everyone I know. Puts money into perspective. I love this book!
Makes Boring Budgeting Come To Life.......2005-12-28
After receiving a recommendation for the online Mvelopes system (CD included with this book), my husband and I decided to read the book and research the system a little more before jumping in with both feet. I found the fictional story engaging, and a big help in conveying the basics of financial management. While it might seem a little hokey at times, I give the author credit for using the power of narrative to teach his material months after reading it, I find myself remembering situations in the book, and applying the principle it taught to my current circumstances). The content of the book is excellent, and I'm proud to say that after three months of using the Mvelopes system, we've reigned in our spending and are now able to avoid accumulating debt. The plan Smith teaches in Money for Life works, and you don't need a computer to pull it off. The book is full of options for pencil and paper lovers, or for those fond of spreadsheets. Money for Life is a great tool that empowers each of us to take control over our resources!
A reader:.......2005-07-27
Money for life relies on a online software program that will cost you a few thousand of dollars over a lifetime of use. If you need a reason to buy a computer this is it. If not, and you need a tool to keep conscious of your spending and wealth building habits. Then I would recommend the budget kit by Judy Lawrence. Good Luck!
