5 out of 5 stars Read it twice, at least.......2007-05-24

I picked this up at the urging of my career services office, and I was not disappointed. Upbeat, friendly, straightforward, and accessible, the book is both helpful and encouraging.

Some of the advice may not seem profound--most of us know to be nice to support staff and many of us know which water glass at a formal dinner is ours--but you are bound to learn a few new things. Considering how much is at stake, it probably isn't a bad idea to review even some of the basics either.

I also think the book helped me secure my summer clerkship--especially the discussions of the economics of law firms and the insights into how hiring partners think.

        3 out of 5 stars Um...yeah.......2004-04-19

This book is well written and has a lot of do's and don'ts of the practical legal world. The author speaks a lot about what to do on the job and frequently gives a few good ideas. A huge percentage of those ideas are supported by real-life anecdotes from various legal professionals. The major problem I had with it, is that throughout almost the entire book I kept finding myself saying, "Yeah, duh." As just one of many many potential examples, there is an anecodote about a summer clerk who goes into a firm, whines that he needs his own office and is allowed to use the office of a lawyer who is out sick. The lawyer wants to connect to her computer from home, so the summer clerk is told he absolutely cannot touch the computer. The clerk does so anyway thus preventing the lawyer from being able to connect to the computer and gaining for the clerk the contempt of everyone in the office. There are a lot of little stories like this where somebody does something just blatantly stupid (and a smaller number where somebody does something blatantly correct). Some of the stories are amusing but are almost always connected to advice that seems really obvious. If you think you have really poor judgement then by all means read this book.

I also found the organization a little irritating. There were no distinct chapter breaks. Although it's got a very methodical organization scheme, it READS as though it's one big continuous text. I like to read at night and stop at the end of a chapter. I kept feeling as though if I were to stop reading I would be cutting an idea midstream and that irritated the heck out of me.

In the book's defense, it is well written and the text flows nicely. There's a wonderfully colloquial feel to how it reads.
I've been reading a lot of law school prep-type books of late and this one was not my favorite. It's not terrible, but it doesn't seem entirely useful to me either.

3 out of 5 stars Decent book, but mostly common sense........2003-11-17

This book was very informative as far as a typical 9-5 workday of a lawyer, but most of her strategies are common sense. Seriously, anyone who doesn't know business manners shoudln't be a lawyer anyway. Its common sense to dress appropriately, to never crack raunchy jokes to a partner, or to speak of how hot another attorney's wife is. If you have any common sense, spend your money on a more practical book with better advice or educational value.

4 out of 5 stars Read it early in law school........2002-11-10

Great advice on making the most out of clerkships, classes, professors, law review, and volunteering opportunities that arise in law school. I wish I had read this book before going to law school.

5 out of 5 stars Useful at any point..........2002-04-30

I'm a starting 1L at Univ. of Houston Law this Fall and bought this book initially because the title got my attention. Boiled down, it's a refreshingly informal "How to" guide for summer internships and new associates. Some of the advice (e.g. on etiquette) might strike you as "Yeah, well of course...everyone knows that", but that doesn't mean we can't benefit from the occasional reminder! The bulk of the advice in the book though will be new information and most helpful in avoiding the common pitfalls...someone else has been there already and either done it very well or done it very badly - this book helps you benefit from their experiences.
There's commentary throughout from practicing law firm recruiters, associates, partners, professors - seems that input is included from just about every facet of the legal world. The book is primarily of value (I think) for it's new associate centric advice (versus summer internship or while you're in law school). That being said, as a soon to be 1L it was definitely valuable to me to get a sense beforehand of how law firms do business (particularly before I even begin shopping for internships.
I say buy it, it was definitely worth the time/cost, particularly because it's so easy to read.

With $2.5 million in venture capital, Rob Ryan founded a tech company that sold for $22 billion 10 years later. He now operates a "boot camp" in rural Montana for wannabes from promising start-ups interested in following in his footsteps. In Entrepreneur America, he shares personal experiences along with lessons learned from his mentoring program of the same name. Chapters titled with Silicon Valley slang (like "Do the Dogs Like the Dog Food?" and "Sucking the Air out of the Room") help readers assess their readiness to meet with venture capitalists, determine whether consumers really need what they're offering, examine core competencies and market position, measure how the product or service matches the intended audience, and compile a winning business plan. Two additional chapters focus on "how to become number one and stay number one" by managing and hiring effectively, dealing with directors, and handling other responsibilities that become critical once an idea gets off the ground. Ryan shows how some of the 50-plus concepts that passed through his program proceeded afterwards, and includes exercises and other tools for those hoping to replicate their victories and avoid their mistakes. The result should prove practical and inspiring for anyone shaping a new business in today's increasingly demanding environment. --Howard Rothman

            Book Description

Maybe you've always wanted to start your own business. Or perhaps you're already a member of a small start-up dot.com and you have no idea what you're doing.

            You're not alone.

Entrepreneurship is the hottest growth area in America today -- there are 30 million entrepreneurs now, and 60 million more say they would like to be. Do you have what it takes -- do you know what it takes -- to compete and succeed with a small business?

Rob Ryan will help you find out. Ryan founded Ascend Communications in 1989, which in nine years grew from zero to over $2 billion in sales. He now runs the Entrepreneur America "boot camp" from his ranch in Montana, where startup wanna-bes come to develop their entrepreneurial skills. Two of Rob's boot camp companies, Silicon Spice and LookSmart, have market capitalizations of over $1 billion.

If you can't get to Montana, however, come here. In Entrepreneur America: Lessons from Inside Rob Ryan's High-Tech Start-up Boot Camp, Ryan shares his techniques for developing a successful team, product, pitch, and, eventually, business.

Ryan focuses on methods he's developed over the years for building a sustainable business that makes money. He emphasizes the importance of testing your idea on customers, building the product, and making sure that product offers something new and important to those customers.

Through anecdotes and advice, Ryan shows you how to:

Be a red polka-dotted zebra. Make sure your customers can pick you out of a crowd.

Find out if the dogs will eat the dog food. Are you giving your customers exactly what they want?

Learn the 10x rule. Your product must be either 1/10 the cost of your competitors', or ten times the performer.

Stay ahead of the pack. Construct a business model so advanced it'll take a year or more for your competitors to catch up.

Business ideas are like belly buttons, says Ryan -- everybody has one. Entrepreneur America will show you how to turn your idea into a real product, take it to investors, and get your startup started.

3 out of 5 stars Good coverage on getting $ from venture capital firms.......2007-03-05

The book is 6 years old, yet the topics covered here is still useful for any entrepreneur to get $$ from venture capitals (VC):

            1.Borrow $$ from friends/relatives to build a prototype
2.Beta test this on large and small firms, to build up clients
3.Build a better product/service based upon their feedbacks
4.Write a concise business plan with killer PowerPoint slides
5.Get the insider VC to arrange meetings
6.Answer intelligently on any VC concerns
7.Get the $$$, start the firm
8.Grow the firm for 3-5 years with track records
            9.IPO and make Billion$$$

Sounds like a great formula! But this is 2007, VC is not the only game in town. They are Private Equity, Hedge Funds, Debt Financing, many other avenues to get $$$. Rob Ryan, are you contacting them?

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Book For Entrepreneur.......2003-04-30

If you are an entrepreneur. Do not do anything before reaqding this book. It is easy to read and understand... No business jargons or anything...

5 out of 5 stars Very informative and through!.......2002-11-01

Rob have wrote a book that should have been use during the crazy internet start- up era. Maybe all those companies would be thriving if they have gone through Rob's boot camp. Ok maybe not all of them but I feel that 80% of the dot com companies may be still existence.

I am still working on my hi-tech company but I have not been able to because they are not up to my standards. I got good ideas but I am just not feeling ready to go solict for funding just yet.

But anyway this is a great book! Rob gives a lot of good information that you would normally pay big money for a consultant to tell you the same thing!!

5 out of 5 stars The only problem with this book..........2002-07-06

...is that it's not out in paperback so that I can buy 50 copies and give them out to people to show them why I babble on about it. Rob Ryan's "Entrepreneur America" is the *single most practical* book about entrepreneurship you will find on the market today.

Rob founded Ascend, and he tells you exactly how he did it. And even though Ascend was a pure technology play, his lessons are broad enough that they can be applied to non-technical inspirations as well.

Kudos also go here to Phaedra Hise. She has captured the voice, verve and essence of Rob Ryan and got him down cold on paper. Quite an achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Must reading for anyone in a technology startup.......2002-06-13

This books is a must read for anyone involved in a hi tech startup. I am with my second private technology company, and it provided some great insight into where we are, and what we need to do. For someone planning to start their own company or join someone elses, you should actively answer all of the questions put forth in the book. It will help you understand what the real chances for success are in a world full of great ideas without markets!

              Book Description

The Global Business Series is designed to ease the process of doing business abroad. Though each book concerns a different country, they all follow the same general format by describing how climates and geography shape unique cultures, which are perpetuated through insidious, subconscious imprinting of children by the family and school. Cultural conditioning is so powerful that it defines thought, determines behavior, and limits expression. If you understand your counterpart's cultural conditioning, you will have a great advantage. An understanding of how foreign cultures dominate and permeate foreign economies, politics, and business is vital for negotiating and managing abroad.

The books in the Global Business Series do more than show how to make business use of an understanding of foreign cultures. They serve as springboards to international business by providing information on sources for help, travel tips, living conditions, and ways to overcome cultural shock and enjoy your foreign assignment.

Note: Other books in this series pertain to Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Thailand and Mexico respectively.

Connect and collaborate--in our Internet age, these two words have taken on a whole new meaning. What they refer to and describe, the essence of community, is the much-discussed and increasingly important subject that authors Stacey Bressler and Charles Grantham explore in Communities of Commerce.

Beginning with a look at the importance of community in our lives, Bressler and Grantham examine what the notion has come to mean. They compare today's exploding pace of change with the revolution in knowledge exchange that stemmed from Gutenberg's invention of the printing press in the mid-15th century. More than simply enabling information to be shared by a greater number of people, the printing press led, ultimately, to a change in how humankind viewed itself. Even more profoundly (and much more rapidly), the Internet has not only expanded our ability to connect with each other, it has entirely transformed our notions of time, space, relationships, and community. Believing the "primary benefit of the Internet is that it gives people the ability to connect and be more closely related to others who share their purpose," the authors illustrate how companies can most effectively relate this benefit to their business models. They discuss the factors that are driving and pulling businesses toward online communities of commerce, as well as the transformation this requires, and provide practical guidance on how to build and sustain effective communities. If organized better, this book could have been shorter and more hard-hitting; however, the authors have done a good job in using interesting (and refreshingly uncommon) case studies to demonstrate the practical importance of an otherwise nebulous concept. --S. Ketchum

5 out of 5 stars Communities of Commerce spells success!.......2000-10-01

I couldn't put Communities of Commerce down and read it in one day! For business owners and others, it captures great concepts and examples of what some businesses are doing to create a powerful network for their business and non-profit communities.

Although outwardly, the style of writing looks academically-oriented, the authors engage the reader by explaining the concept as though a movie is being created. Once I got into the rhythm of the book, it was a breeze, and each chapter opened new insights.

With my writing tablet quickly filling up with notes, I appreciated the case studies, tips, and checklist at the end of each chapter. This allowed me to immediately evaluate whether my company is appropriate to pursue the "Communities of Commerce" approach.

From history to steps to take, the entire book is a gold-mine for business (and community) leaders who want to take their companies into successful Internet avenues.

I also appreciated the web listing of the various companies involved. I recommend Communities of Commerce to all serious business and community leaders.

The road out of the land of debt can be a lonely one. You feel shame and guilt over your debts, not to mention fear and anxiety.
And you feel alone with your "secret." How can you hope to find your way out of this desolate place?

This pocket-sized daily guide can help. Karen Casanova's book contains dated, daily meditations which also offer practical suggestions for reducing your debt and your stress.

This one is not a complicated "money-management" book. Rather, it is a combination of spiritual/self-help manual that you can carry with you for daily shots of inspiration.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by debt, it seems to me that this book will be helpful to you.

This book has become part of my morning ritual. I read the meditation for the day each morning. It helps me to quit debting one day at a time. I've made some real strides in my debting behavior and this book helps keep me on track. A must read for anyone struggling with debt. It'll make you feel better and give you the strength and hope to make it one more day without debting.

Daily meditations for those who swim through a stormy sea of debt encircled by sharks. The stress of debt is as fierce as any other addiction, affecting us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and even causing other addictive behaviors, all of which affects our relationships. In fact, we get so stressed about our debt that, for relief, we spend more. Debt is acquired a day at a time. Likewise, debt reduction and financial solvency are accomplished and maintained a day at a time. These meditations are a welcome adjunct to financial recovery programs or books.

5 out of 5 stars didn't get in debt in a day and won't get out in a day ..........2000-04-27

Being in debt is a lonely place to be, and I finally found a simple step forward to a permanent solution, this book. There is a short one small page topic for each day. This keeps me in the solution of becoming financially solvent, each day. The topics are simple and reaffirming, along with suggestions that most people perhaps do without thinking, but for those that have gotten into debt, the topics are the ladder out of our problem. Previously I bought "How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt & Live Prosperously" by Jerrold Mundis but this did not change my spending behavior even though I read it cover to cover.
