Book Description
This is the first book to explore the meaning of equality and freedom of education in a global context and their relationship to the universal right to education. It also proposes evaluating school systems according to their achievement of equality and freedom.
Education in the 21st century is widely viewed as a necessary condition for the promotion of human welfare, and thus identified as a basic human right. Educational rights are included in many national constitutions written since the global spread of human rights ideas after World War II. But as a global idea, the meaning of educational rights varies between civilizations. In this book, which builds on the concept of the universal right to education set forth in Spring's The Universal Right to Education: Justification, Definition, and Guidelines, his intercivilizational analysis of educational rights focuses on four of the world's major civilizations: Confucian, Islamic, Western, and Hindu.
Spring begins by considering educational rights as part of the global flow of ideas and the global culture of schooling. He also considers the tension this generates within different civilizational traditions. Next, he proceeds to:
*examine the meaning of educational rights in the Confucian tradition, in the recent history of China, and in the Chinese Constitution;
*look at educational rights in the context of Islamic civilization and as presented in the constitutions of Islamic countries, including an analysis of the sharp contrast between the religious orientation of Islamic educational rights and those of China and the West;
*explore the problems created by the Western natural rights tradition and the eventual acceptance of educational rights as represented in European constitutions, with a focus on the development and prominence given in the West to the relationship between schooling and equality of opportunity; and,
*investigate the effect of global culture on India and the blend of Western and Hindu ideas in the Indian constitution, highlighting the obstacles to fulfillment of educational rights created by centuries of discrimination against women and lower castes.
In his conclusion, Spring presents an educational rights statement based on his intercivilizational analysis and his examination of national constitutions. This statement is intended to serve as a model for the inclusion of educational rights in national constitutions.

The advice is to general, not particularly insightful or useful.......2007-01-29
This book provides advice that could be useful to almost any busy professional, but it does not particularly address the challenges and trade-offs faced by a busy lawyer.
The author also appears to be writing for lawyers pre-internet, e-mail, and blackberry. For example, he describes how buying a week-end house gave him a place to go and leave the office behind. But for many lawyers today the week runs 24-7. The country house is just a slightly more awkward place to get work done.
The book provides almost nothing in the way of actual advice for lawyers. The last substantive chapter, chapter 11, is where we finally get to the "action plan." But even here we are offered only vague generalities and cute stories about how it is "all up to you." This is sort of like buying a book on woodworking or knitting and, in the last chapter, finding the sage advice "the wood is what you make of it" or "the yarn is very flexible, you can knit it into anything you want" with no instructions, models, guides or other practical advice. In other words, everything in the book is true, but it is not very useful.

China's reformers insisted over two decades ago that the iron rice bowl, symbol of the Communist Party's compact to provide cradle-to-grave security for all, had to be broken if China was going to modernize. This book explores why China's reforms have not gone far enough, and captures the complexity and contradictions of China's transition from a planned to a market-oriented economy, involving state enterprises engaged in wide-open competition but still relying on government subsidies, the private sector becoming the fastest growing part of the economy, civil servants "privatizing" state assets, and provincial governments putting up regional trade barriers. Meanwhile, fast rising corruption and defiance of the law undermine the reform effort. The book also looks at the impact of reform on China's cities and farms, and on key sectors of industry, finance and telecommunications, and revisits China's controversial Three Gorges Dam. Guided by the principle that knowledge of China's past is essential to understanding the present, the book concludes that despite their commitment to change, China's leaders cling to attitudes and values that are deeply rooted in the country's imperial past. Not only the future of economic reform, but the very survival of the Communist party, depend upon their capacity to change those values.

Mr. Hughes presents the reader with an insightful analysis of Chinese economics and its foreign relations. A very worthwhile read!
Perfect book for everyone interested in China!.......2002-04-19
"China's Economic Challenge : Smashing the Iron Rice Bowl" takes a modern look at China, its economy, and the effects of the outside world on China. The author, Neil Hughes, obviously is an expert. He worked at the World Bank for over 20 years and has a Masters degree from Tuft University's prestigious Fletcher School.
As a non-academic, I thought this book would go way over my head. I picked it up because I am so interested in China that I read anything I can find on the subject. "China's Economic Challenge : Smashing the Iron Rice Bowl" is by far the best book that I've read on the state of modern China. The book is smart enough for academics and banking/ economics professionals, but interesting and well written enough for a lay person to understand and enjoy.
I highly recommend this book. Actually, I don't know how any person working in the international business world can get away with not reading this great book.

Why write a book about Amazon when all the info is on the website, you all ask? It's simple: to provide a hard-copy ready reference, and this book COVERS IT ALL. Everything dealing with both sides (buyer/seller) is here. Also is excellent for those new to the online-shopping experience. A crucial book, and a top-floor volume in the Dummies series.

Amazon seems to have a lot of zombies wandering around. So many people jumping around screaming at one another about subjects they know nothing about. People that think Modest Mouse is the next Beatles, then of course everyone raving about Al Gore's new movie. The puppets dance and the crowd cheers for more as their marionette strings bob up and down. They scream when you question their intelligence and they cry when you make them realize that the Da Vinci code, and broke Back Mountain are fictional tales and not some kind of in your face "movement". What they need is a primer to help better guide the strings with. This book is a tool that they can use for that!!!

"Stuck" on Post-Its.......2006-03-03
IT says in the title this book is by "Mara Friedman and mara friedman" but do not be mislead, this is only one person so you get a biased point of view throughout the book. It's basically next to useless: you can't order things from the book, you can't start your own competing website. It doesn't even tell you how.
The "Dummies" series has really fallen down. The last good one they wrote was "Post-It Notes for Dummies" which provided a much-needed rarely-explored analyses of the history of the Post-it, misconceptions on the Post-it (they are not ALL yellow, believe it or not) and multiple uses for the Post-it. One time this model on the catwalk was totally covered in Post-its like she was wearing a Post-it dress. It was very cool.
In summary if you don't like leaving notes lying around DO NOT buy Post-Its and do not bother buying the Post-It book. Unless you want to start your own competing post-it company or something.
problems with navigating amazon.com?.......2005-11-19
ok so i've never read this book, but if you need a book to navigate amazon.com, then you should just give me your money instead. I mean, I know it's hard to type a word and press enter, and then press buy; i think the real difficulty of amazon.com is how the author managed to write XXX pages about navigating amazon.com. Having said that, it almost makes me want to buy this book, so I'm changing my 1 Star to 2.

Book Description
This Ph.D. dissertation explores the transformation of the industrial relations regime in Sweden during the 1990s. Four areas are studied; industrial relations of the growing service sector, industrial relations of small enterprises, effects of re-regulation, and introduction of competition on industrial relations in telecommunications service and internationalization of industrial relations in the metal sector. The author shows that in the 1990s, the labor market regime of Sweden changed into a new regime, a result of altered conditions caused by the third industrial revolution.
The changes took place within a certain context and were governed by strong path dependence. The internationalization or Europeanization of the economy, foremost the upsurge in ingoing foreign direct investments, increased the Swedish industry's dependence on non-national actors and economy. The employers and the trade unions had strong incentives to come to an agreement (the industrial Agreement in 1997), to achieve international competitiveness. The increasing dependence on (Western/European) trade and investments caused additional adjustments of industrial relations. The Europeanization of the political decision making process (EU membership) had also an impact, in combination with other political measures, such as the introduction of liberalization, abandoning monopolies etc, however not as substantial as that of (economic) internationalization.
