Required Reading.......2007-03-14
I had to read this book to take AP Macroeconomics when I was 17. I could only read ten pages at a time as it bored me to tears. It didn't help with the course at all, and the teacher never tested us on it, but I learned a bit.
Economics untainted by political obfuscation.......2004-02-16
Blinder rather superbly shows how sound economic policy needn't depend on soft heads and soft hearts (a defect of liberal policy makers) nor hard hearts and hard heads(a defect of conservative policy makers). Readers of the book will realize that politicians too often force false compromises onto voters. It is possible to enact policies that are good for individuals and corporation, rich and poor. Sadly, it is not economic theory that is lacking, but political will.
This book should be required reading for new voters.
A powerful yet unintended message!.......2003-05-04
Mr. Blinder does a great job of setting forth sound economic policies that should be adopted by any nation. His chapter on protecting the environment was particularly enlightening. However, I disagree with him on one very specific issue:
- On page 63, Mr. Blinder argues that employees should get a share of a company's net income rather than a fixed wage rate. This is no less than a recipe for disaster. How do you define a company's net income? Upper management would spend most of its time devising ways to understate their results while employees would make a great effort to dispute the company's income statement. In the end the holy grail of economic efficiency would be lost as both parties squabble endlessly. Just look how easily Enron cooked its books.
What really struck me as fantastic was Mr. Blinder's brilliant if unintentional critique of American style democracy. He did this by showing how often the American political process produces mediocre results that fly in the face of simple economics. He turns the spotlight on the damaging effects of lobbying by powerful groups and their vested interests. This was particularly apparent in his chapter on tax reform.
I recommend this title to anyone who is interested in setting society on the road to prosperity. I would also recommend it to anyone interested in knowing just how harmful the US's corrupt brand of democracy is. Perhaps this book's greatest contribution lies in raising the following question:
How can a system be devised that safeguards the ideals of democrarcy and freedom without compromising economic efficiency and equity?
A good Keynesian analysis.......2000-05-21
Blinder renders a balanced analysis of governmental policy, criticizing Democrats and Republicans equally. I might even go as far as to say that he is objective. However, his policy prescriptions are very left-leaning. The reader will see clearly that Blinder makes many normative assumptions about the goal of policy and that those assumptions dictate unambiguously the liberal ends to which our resources and tax dollars should be directed. He gives a great explanation of how the deficit grew out of the Reagan administration's blunders, and I may even recommend this book for that alone. Overall, it is a good econ book for the initiated readers and everybody else, as it doesn't treat you like a dupe. Definitely preferable to The Armchair Economist, but you should balance your diet with a reading of Capitalism and Freedom. LEWIS GAINOR MIZZOU ECON
eye-opening economic perspective.......1998-07-23
Blinder will have you sitting beside yourself as he challenges the public's vastly preconceived notions of the economic world. One chapter in particular draws my attention, "Who Will Protect Us From Protectionism." Although there are minor flaws in his analysis, due to recent revelations in economic free trade policy, Blinder exercises a practicality that wonderfully illustrates the need to revamp our protectionist policy. This book is a must read if you are still mislead by the notion that protectionism levels the playing field and increases American welfare.

If you're enrolled in one of the 15 non-ABA approved correspondence law schools in California and you're looking for supplemental study materials then first go through California baby specific books such as Fleming's Fundamentals of Law Essay Examination Writing Workbook Volume 1 (Torts, Contracts and Criminal Law) (Fleming's Fundamentals of Law, Volume 1) Study Partner Baby Bar Exam Writing: Torts, Contracts, Criminal Law (Study Partner Exam Writing), Multistate Bar Examination and Multistate Examination Workbook: Contracts/ucc, Criminal Law, Torts, Professional Responsibility (Fleming's Fundamentals of Law, Volume 1) and when you are totally burnt out on spriral-bound mail-order books that are written for California non-ABA law students and after 9 months you will burn out on those spriral bound books, then start studying The Finz Multistate Method. California non-ABA law students keep in mind that Finz Multistate Method is a general review it was not written for the Baby Bar Exam. Of course if you are in a ABA approved law school then study whatever books are approved by your instructors-students in ABA approved law schools are not required to take the Bany Bar Exam.

There is NO better source for law concepts than Finz. Dr. Finz is the single best source for all law concepts, especially Tort. I've listened to authors and read other authors; some are bad, some are ok, some are quite good. But nobody comes close to Finz in terms of completeness, accessibility, and clarity. My friends, you can't go wrong with Dr. Finz.

Everyone does the BAR/BRI questions, lot of my profs pulled their questions from this. However, word to the wise, some of the questions stretch the logic behind the law!!!
Finz is excellent-mostly.......2006-11-10
This is a "must have" for a first year law student as a supplement and it is worth every dollar you spend on it, much better than most of the others out there. Small issue however; once in a while, the proof reader must have taken a coffee break. For example, one of the first questions in Contracts mixes up the two main characters. However, it is still an excellent study guide and a true value when a student needs to practice for an exam.
great preparation.......2006-05-05
As the others here said, this book is great preparation for the MBE part of the bar exam, yet, I felt that the actual exam questions tended to be a tad more difficult than the ones in the book (the four answer-choices seemed to be even more similar to each other than in the book). Still, I mainly used the book to prepare and had a score of 90% in the exam.

THE book on learning Import/Export.......2007-10-17
I have an interest (along with my wife) with selling specialty novelty items. We always seem to have lots of ideas but have lacked a system for getting them to market.
After reading the reviews on Amazon for this book, I picked it up How Small Business Trades Worldwide and read it cover to cover. Excellent pragmatic advice. One of the greatest parts of Spier's system is how you can test the market without investing a substantial amount of money. He provides a great step-by-step system to opening your own import/export business. Added bonus: he's got one heck of a sense of humor.
I would also recommend signing up for his online class too.
Insightful Book.......2007-10-11
I normally do not review many items, but I felt that this book was a great help in explaining all of the intricacies involved in small business trade. If you are deciding between this and other books, this clearly is the best book out there regarding international trade. I have read most of the other books on Amazon regarding this topic and in each of them they provide very little in terms of how to be successful. Additionally once you finish the book, the author is more then willing to answer any questions you might have while providing a medium in which to further your knowledge in international trade (listserv). If you want to be successful in international trade or are wondering how small businesses trade worldwide, order this book as it will provide you with a clear picture as to how to get into this field.
This book is one you must read.......2007-07-19
I purchased this book and then ended up enrolling in one of John Spiers' classes on world trade. I can not say enough good about this book and John Speirs' approach to small business. After researching many other books, courses and programs, that seemed to be nothing more than marketing schemes designed to get you to purchase some "must have" resource for an import/export business. While reading this book I feel as if I have a mentor teaching me step by step the way to succeed in small business world trade. His approach is clear and concise. The book is easy to read because it is so well written. I feel that this book has changed my thinking and strategy and has probably saved me from making fatal business mistakes.

Thanks very much for your book. It has certainly saved me a lot of mistakes, time and money. The book is concise, well written with lots of practical information on getting your product from conception to market. More than just a basic 'importing 101' book, it includes insights and information that could only be otherwise obtained by years of hands-on experience.
A fantastic step-by-step book.......2007-05-08
I picked up this book about a month ago and I just have to say that it's absolutely fantastic. I've been looking high and low for this book and I couldn't find it anywhere until now. Most books just reiterate information you'd typically find in some weekend trading class at a local community college.
The difference between this book and other books I've read is that this book actually gives you practical advice for small businesses. It beautifully outlines the steps you need to develop your own products from start to finish. Economies of scale for most products make it almost impossible for small business owners to compete for market share. Instead, the book focuses on innovation which is a more viable option for most people.
This book has really inspired me to pursue my product and I feel more confident now than with any other book. Thanks for an awesome and informative read.

The world situation has witnessed dramatic changes in the recent past and defense-related science and technology are coming under increasing pressure to demonstrate their ability to contribute added value to national and international economies. But defense conversion is complicated by the absence of tested principles and there is no formal training to facilitate the conversion process. As a result, such factors as long-term implications for defense together with a broad range of issues related to economic, political and social questions are not being adequately addressed. Governments and industries are searching for optimum strategies to guide the defense conversion process without benefit of either historical precedents as models or a complete understanding of the process itself.
The present book identifies and studies the elements of successful defense conversion strategies through a systematic analysis of the factors influencing them and the common features of specific national efforts. The book reflects a combination of theory and practical experience. International strategies are explored that stimulate the conversion of defense technologies to industrial capacity, global economic growth and stability, the preservation and enhancement of defense technology options, and the ability to capitalize on unique economic, political and social opportunities afforded by defense technology conversion.
The nations of the former Soviet Union present a particular problem. In Russia, for instance, from 1990 to 1993 there was a 47% decline in industrial production and a 38% decrease in GNP. This clearly needs immediate action, but there are difficulties with the conversion processes, technology transfer and implementation of dual-use strategies. While many of these issues are generic to the process, there are national and cultural difficulties. At a time of unprecedented global political and economic instability, the collective knowledge and experience of NATO and its Cooperation Partners will be essential to the successful conversion of defense production capabilities to economic tools that can contribute to universal economic equilibrium and prosperity.

This book focuses on the challenges faced by defense-related industries and by the US Department of Defense in the post-Cold War era: by the former in enhancing their financial well-being, and by the latter in maintaining affordable national security. It explores the conditions they face, both currently and in the future they envision, as well as the corporate strategies and public policies that each develops in response to these conditions and visions. The contributors to this book describe these corporate strategies and public policies, assess their respective strengths and weaknesses, and where appropriate, endorse them or recommend alternatives. Finally, senior executives from ten small and large defense-related firms recount their experiences in diversifying successfully into commercial markets and the challenges they met or still face in planning and implementing their strategies effectively.
