    Book Description

The welfare system in the United Kingdom is broken. The number of claims has escalated and so, in consequence, have welfare expenditures. The social system does not encourage welfare recipients to become independent. Half the population of the United Kingdom lives in households drawing one of the major means-tested benefits. Research documents that means-tests paralyze self-help, discourage self-improvement, and tax honesty while at the same time rewarding claimants for being either inactive or deceitful.

In Making Welfare Work, Frank Field challenges the current political orthodoxy, particularly its emphasis on the role of legislation alone in bringing about social improvement in a welfare state. Field argues that the impact legislation has on personal character is pivotal to human advance in a welfare state. Welfare reconstruction needs to address and channel the differing roles of self-interest, self-improvement, and altruism, which are among the great driving forces in human character. A successful welfare state must reinforce these important forces which influence our nature because to create an imbalance between these three motive forces will always undermine welfare's objectives.

Field discusses in detail aspects of modern British society in dire need of change. These include the drug trade, benefit traps, permanent adolescence, the rise of part-time work, inequality in incomes, excluding the disabled, single parents, and the very elderly, for example. This clearly delineated, well-researched blueprint for success will be important reading for politicians and policymakers in all industrialized nations. Its author is well-positioned to revise and review the welfare policies of democratic societies.

      Book Description

View the Table of Contents. Read the Introduction.

"Jacobs offers a history of the federal government's efforts to curb labor racketeering. The heart of his text focuses on the results achieved by employing Civil RICO suits to weed out organized crime from unions long mired in corruption. The Justice Department has mounted twenty such efforts since 1982, and Jacobs's book is the first to provide a comprehensive assessment of this controversial tactic. He tackles this ambitious project with a combination of detailed research, clear writing, and judicious consideration, all of which have been a hallmark of his previous texts on corruption and organized crime. The result is a must read book for anyone interested in the problem of union corruption and what to do about it."
      —Industrial and Labor Relations Review

"Jacobs, legal scholar and expert on the Mafia, sets out to show how the Mob has distorted American labor history, explaining the relationship between organized crime and organized labor, as well as recent federal efforts to clean up unions"
      —Booklist

"James Jacobs, a New York University law professor and author of Mobsters, Unions and Feds, says Mafiosi were hired by union organizers in the early twentieth century to combat company toughs. Now, he says, they specialize in 'selling the rights of workers.' "
      —USA Today

"Jacobs further burnishes his reputation for advancing the study of organized crime in America with his latest work of scholarship, billed by the publisher as 'the only book to investigate how the mob has distorted American labor history.' This worthy successor to Gotham Unbound and Busting the Mob is an exhaustive, albeit sometimes repetitive, survey of the grip La Cosa Nostra has exerted on the country's most powerful unions. While many will be familiar with the broad outlines of the corruption that riddled the Teamsters, which is recounted by the author, his summary of some lesser-known examples of pervasive labor corruption help illustrate his thesis that the entire American union movement has suffered from the intimidation and fear the mob used to gain and maintain control of unions. Especially valuable is Jacobs's examination of the relatively recent use of the RICO law to bring dirty unions under the control of a federally appointed independent trustee, and the book's posing of hard questions about the mixed success those monitorships have had."
      —Publishers Weekly

"Jacobs has covered a wide range of legal issues, including such hot-button topics as hate crime laws and gun control, but he always returns to the world of mobsters and the men and women who investigate, prosecute, and sentence them."
      —NYU Today

"James Jacobs brilliantly documents and analyzes a remarkable and untold chapter in the history of American law enforcement. This groundbreaking book should be a starting point for officials around the world who confront powerful organized crime groups."
—Jeremy Travis, President, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, The City University of New York and former Director, National Institute of Justice

"A pathbreaking work. For 50 years, organized crime has been the elephant in organized labor's living room, unacknowledged and unexplained. Jacobs has critically analyzed every facet of this apparently intractable problem—from its roots to the federal government's various efforts to challenge organized crime's influence. From this point forward, no one can think critically about this problem without relying on Jacobs' work."
—Robert Luskin, General Executive Board Attorney, Laborers' International Union of North America

"Jacobs presents a near encyclopedic account of the Mafia's infiltration, control and exploitation of four major national unions and a number of large local unions. It is a sordid frightening story of violence, corruption and oppression, the betrayal of union members and extortion of employers, defiance of the law and disregard for human decency. This disturbing story should be required reading for all who seek strong and more democratic unions, all who would protect the rights of workers, and all who are concerned for the health of our political and social processes."
—Clyde Summers, Jefferson B. Fordham Professor of Law, Emeritus, University of Pennsylvania Law School

"A fabulous and fascinating book. Jacobs demonstrates the continuing impact of organized crime on the American union movement, and details the legal mechanisms developed in recent years to combat mob influence. History has come home to haunt us, and Jacobs makes the case for using law to fight against the mob for union democracy."
—Stanley N. Katz, Professor of Public Affairs, Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University

"Jacobs demonstrates that while it has been remarkably difficult to defeat labor racketeering, much has been achieved. This will be welcome news to all who root for the revitalization of the labor movement."
—Ronald G. Ehrenberg, Irving M. Ives Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Economics, Cornell University

Nowhere in the world has organized crime infiltrated the labor movement as effectively as in the United States. Yet the government, the AFL-CIO, and the civil liberties community all but ignored the situation for most of the twentieth century. Since 1975, however, the FBI, Department of Justice, and the federal judiciary have relentlessly battled against labor racketeering, even in some of the nation's most powerful unions.

Mobsters, Unions, and Feds is the first book to document organized crime's exploitation of organized labor and the massive federal clean-up effort. A renown criminologist who for twenty years has been assessing the government's attack on the Mafia, James B. Jacobs explains how Cosa Nostra families first gained a foothold in the labor movement, then consolidated their power through patronage, fraud, and violence and finally used this power to become part of the political and economic power structure of 20th century urban America.

Since FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover's death in 1972, federal law enforcement has aggressively investigated and prosecuted labor racketeers, as well as utilized the civil remedies provided for by the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) statute to impose long-term court-supervised remedial trusteeships on mobbed-up unions. There have been some impressive victories, including substantial progress toward liberating the four most racketeer-ridden national unions from the grip of organized crime, but victory cannot yet be claimed.

The only book to investigate how the mob has exploited the American labor movement, Mobsters, Unions, and Feds is the most comprehensive study to date of how labor racketeering evolved and how the government has finally resolved to eradicate it.

1 out of 5 stars A Poor History of the Labor Movement.......2006-05-21

While the book reveals Jacobs knowledge of organized crime, the book does not provide evidence of the real struggles of workers who had benefited through their self-activity. This one sided book shows how the mob infiltrates unions but does not provide significant evidence of worker resistance to criminal activity in unions. The book is therefore more about organized crime and union raccateers rather than organized crime and union organizations. Why are unions singled out as the font of criminal action when so many other organizations are susceptible to mob influence? It is patently false to argue that union members are not interested in the affairs of unions. This argument is the equivalent of saying tht workers don't like unions, when they in fact are the primary forces in forming them. True, some union leaders are corrupt, but today we are finding a resurgence of rank-and-file local leaders who are not corrupt. Though Jacobs contends he is not anti-union, his book is certainly anti-worker. The book provides no adequate prescription for resolving the problem that he sees so endemic to unions. The book suffers from inadequate knowledge of the trajectory of labor history in the U.S. and an obsession with organized crime. Moreover, we cannot equate unions writ large with the broader labor movement that includes organized and unorganized workers.

5 out of 5 stars An inside look at who has talken the American worker hostage. .......2006-04-28

Jacobs' research has been diligent as evidenced by this inspired, spell binding, page turner. He takes the reader inside the American workers' unions and shows how the workers have been taken hostage by the mob. This is a MUST read for anyone who cares about the American worker!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing piece of work.......2006-03-09

Like the cliff notes to racketeering, this book submerses the reader in the core aspects of organized crime, how if has afflicated the United States and the history of labor and government's moves to resist it. A truly splendid piece of work by the Warren E Berger professor.

5 out of 5 stars A Practical Solution To Information Overload.......2000-08-18

I found the worksheets alone in this book worth the price. When you follow the step-by-step instructions, the worksheets cull out only the data you need. With all the extraneous data out of the way, it's easy to pinpoint critical problems that you might miss otherwise. And it makes developing key indicators and reports easier as well. I think any CEO who wants to keep the company's accounting and human resource managers on top of things at all times should give them this book tomorrow...if not sooner.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Hands On Resource.......2000-08-10

This book is packed with practical information and worksheets so you really get your money's worth. All points are illustrated with actual company stories and real-world experiences. The format makes it particularly easy to read and use.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Any Entrepreneur.......2000-08-07

I recommend this book to my coaching clients because it gives them a real system to develop strategy and then measure performance. Everyone wants a simple way to stay on track with their goals, and this book offers organizational planning advice, suggestions on how to effectively communicate the plan with employees, and then reports to make sure there is accountability for results.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute necessity!.......2000-08-06

Whether you work in a large company or small, are new to business or are a long-time professional, you will find something invaluable in this book. I bought the 1st edition, and this 2nd edition adds several new sections: there is a whole new chapter devoted to Human Resources, and great sections on holding a strategic planning meeting and writing a business plan. This book should be on every business person's bookshelf - you'll use it again and again.

I was very disappointed by this book. In the gift suggestion section many of the gifts suggested giving things that you needed the recipes from one of her other books. It was disappointing not to have access to all of the information referenced in the book. I also think much of the information was fairly common knowledge. I would not recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars No good tips here.......2005-05-27

I purchased "Frugal Families" because I am already a stay-at-home mom and already have a large family, thus I skipped "Miserly Mom." Based on McCoy's references to "Miserly Mom" in this book, I bought the wrong book. I expected some tips on saving money everyday and instead got tips for decorating for the holidays, buying a car, purchasing insurance and electrical appliances. Not what I thouht I was getting and practically useless to me.

This book has almost no tips on living frugally. If you are serious about saving money, don't bother with this book and go straight for the Complete Tightwad Gazette. That is a much better use of your money!

I read all of the reviews posted on this page...even the old ones from 1999. I was hesitant to buy the book based on the few bad reviews, but I loved it! The old reviews must be based on an earlier version. This version I bought is very new. It was packed with helpful information, loads of websites, holiday help ideas, pets, kids, etc. It is WELL worth the price.

            5 out of 5 stars Stress-Free Family with Frugality.......2003-05-18

In true miserly fashion, Jonni McCoy makes saving money a trill and an adventure in Frugal Families.

Whereas Mrs. McCoyýs previous books (Miserly Moms and Miserly Meals) have focused on how a mom or a person can save money, Frugal Families is a compilation of how an entire family can get into a lifestyle of frugality. I especially enjoy this, as itýs easy for one person (the mom) to do what she can to pinch pennies; but itýs refreshing to see that life-long learning and behavior is possible with our children. Additionally, Frugal Families offers an extensive resource collection at the end of each chapter, in case you want to look for more information on various topics.

Jonniýs book is a great inspiration to those of us who do not use coupons. It details ways to save money in practically every manner of family living. Need window treatments? No problem! There is an entire chapter devoted to beautifying your house on a budget. Thinking about taking a family vacation? Make sure you read Chapter Six, complete with toll-free phone numbers and hotel alternatives. There is even a chapter on how you should budget your money, and how to work at paying down your financial obligations so that you can live a debt-free (and stress-free) life! But, donýt stop there! Once you learn how to live more frugally, then you need to read the next section on how to save more of your money and how to invest it wisely.

There are many uncertains in life today, especially with job insecurities, economic recessions and the threats facing the international fronts. But, when you are in control of your money ý and you make living frugally a part of your life, you are able to feel in control of your financial well-being. By doing this, your turn the tables on uncertainty and take your money back into your hands. To do this, make sure you take the time to read Frugal Families, itýll give you many options to taking the stress out of your family finances.

                  Book Description

The car industry is witnessing an irreversible transition from the sellers' market of the 1980s to the buyers' market of the 1990s and beyond, with executives and managers realising that a new approach to all their customers can provide a vital competitive advantage. Creating the Customer-Driven Car Company explains clearly why and how customers should and must drive the whole process of creating, building, selling and servicing cars. Karl Ludvigsen, a leading expert in the area, gives specific recommendations for managing this change and enhancing business performance.

                    Book Description

The major economic policy issues related to the EU's eastern enlargement are analyzed in this collection. Issues range from macroeconomic policy change challenges during the transition to EU membership and experiences with financial sector reform in the light of EU accession, to the modeling of the economic effects of EU accession on EU incumbents and on candidate countries. The volume also draws on previous accession experiences and analyzes the major issue of disparities between the first- and second-tier candidate countries and the countries left out of the accession process altogether.
