.... I used this test preparation manual to sit for my Master's ticket in St. Louis 12 years ago. Since that time I have purchased an additional 5 copies of this well written, humorous instructional manual. I am purchasing 3 more tonight... two to give as gifts to young, bright wanna-be captains. The third copy is to replace mine.
...even if you plan to go to Sea School... this book will be worth it's value.... study and learn this book and you will "ace" the charting element...

Clear, Concise, effective information to help you pass the exam and get your ticket for far less than the voluminous Houston or MET manuals. I would and do recommend this book to any crew member looking to obtain a 100 ton license. I purchased this manual ten years ago after two captains I knew recommended it to me. I used this manual to obtain my license and have since passed the recommendation on to several others who have obtained their licenses using only this book.

Budd Gondor has written an excellent guide to obtaining your Coast Guard license. From the mass of technical materials on navigation, boathandling, weather, et cetera - Budd has distilled a short book which captures the essence of the art of seamanship as needed to get the CG license and be called "Captain". His explanations and diagrams are clear and easy to understand. This book is more like sitting across the table from a "salty dog", where too many preparation books are more like having a oceanographic engineer lecture. No book will substitute for time on the water, but with some background, this book can help you get your license and learn from those 60 or 120 days of experience instead of having just one day of experience 60 times. It worked for me - 100 ton mate near coastal with towing endorsement first time!

Nitrogen constitutes about 79 percent of the earth's atmosphere, yet, in an agricultural plant production system, it is still common for soils to be deficient in the nitrogen needed for maximum plant growth. Nitrogen fertilizers, however, despite being essential for the economically driven production of food and fiber, are recognized as polluters of natural waters, and it has become increasingly apparent that manufactured and naturally occurring nitrogen resources must be better managed. This book addresses the problem by describing how such factors as types of soils and crops, irrigation methods, climate, and the nitrogen cycle itself affect levels of nitrogen in agricultural plant production systems. The book also provides a practical guide to the use of different fertilizers with regard to environment, type of plant, and method of farming. Best Business Book By Far.......2000-11-13

As a professional organizer, I'm always interested in learning new efficiencies. This book offers more, page for page, than any of the current "best books on business" found on the best seller's lists. Francis makes her points briefly and succinctly in a conversational style that keeps you interested. Not only does she describe easy-to-understand techniques, she offers forms and worksheets to put her methods to work. I recommend this book to anyone who's serious about making career, business and and life as efficient and stress-free as possible.

Solid, wide-ranging help for the small business owner.......2005-04-03

I must say I didn't know what to expect when I opened this book. I had found it listed as a recommended reading on The Great Game of Business Web site (www.greatgame.com). But Francis completely won me over with her solid, specific recommendations and common-sense approach to small business management. This book covers a wide range of topics-basic goal-setting, time management, how to use financial analysis to make better management decisions, making planning a regular part of your operations, the benefits of open-book management, developing an organizational structure, hiring and keeping good personnel, disciplining and firing employees the right way, and suggestions for developing a positive attitude about your business and your life. I still don't know how she managed to pack so much information into a relatively short book (161 pages counting the glossary and bibliography), but you'll find numerous nuggets of gold in every single chapter. If I had to recommend one starting point for any small business owner, this book would be it. Although this book would be appropriate for any small business owner in any industry, owners of construction-related businesses will find it especially helpful in virtue of the fact that many of Francis's consulting assignments were in that industry.
