"I thoroughly enjoyed the book on a number of levels. It enhanced my risk management knowledge base, and via the author's example, re-enforced my own belief in the student & teacher approach to gaining knowledge, understanding, and then sharing what is learned with others. It was also very clear that Mr. Kloman enjoys writing. In sharing some of his own experiences and obvious sense of fun, he adds much to what could be a dry subject in the hands of others."

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Title, Great Risk Management Book.......2005-09-20

As a long time "student" of risk management (former CRO, Risk Manager), former spear carrier for Felix Kloman in the old Tillinghast days, and a person who appreciates and admires Felix Kloman's contrarian nature, this book is a great read for all those in the risk management profession, and for those who are not but have an interest in the topic. It is full of thought provoking gems that challenge conventional risk thinking. Only in Kloman's world can one draw risk lessons from Homer's Odyssey that ring true today (pg 31/32):

* "Managing risk involves moral ambiguities
* Watch out for unintended consequences
* Prepare for contingencies, but expect surprises
* Life is exploration and adventure - don't avoid risk"

Entertaining, clearly written, occasionally repetitive, easy to digest in chunks over a plane ride or two, its well worth the read. You'll find yourself highlighting pages, and writing notes in the margins for use later -- all the signs of a good book.

    While social injustice has been increasing, the idea of social justice has been undermined by unfounded appeals to personal responsibility and equal opportunity. These have been employed as an excuse for doing nothing about the enrichment of the few at the expense of the many and for making ever harsher demands on the poor and vulnerable. With grace and wit, Brian Barry exposes the shoddy logic and distortion of reality that underpins this ideology. Once we understand the role of the social structure in limiting options, we have to recognize that really putting into practice ideas such as equal opportunity and personal responsibility would require a fundamental transformation of almost all existing institutions. Barry argues that only if inequalities of wealth and income are kept within a narrow range can equal prospects for education, health and autonomy be realized. He proposes a number of policies to achieve a more equal society and argues that they are economically feasible. But are they politically possible? The apparent stability of the status quo is delusory, he responds: radical changes in our way of life are unavoidable. Whether these changes are for better or for worse depends partly on the availability of a coherent set of principles and a programme flowing from them that is capable of mobilizing the growing discontent with business as usual'. That is, ultimately, why social justice matters.

          This is a very good introduction for novices, but leaves out a very important factor. Whatever you are marketing, nothing replaces letting your audience know who you are, what you have to offer, and why they should look to you for products, service or advice. This is "personal publicity," and it is a must in today's highly competitive marketplace.

          While this book has breadth, it lacks depth. I found myself wanting more in almost every section. After 12 years of owning a small business, few of the ideas were of sufficient detail to be of real use. For example, we rely on the Yellow Pages for 10-20% or our new customers. I would have liked to see an entire chapter on this topic, not two pages.

                              I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend, and thought it was great. It's well organized, so readers can read it cover to cover, or just skim through for relevant sections. It's a must have for students in any type of program.

                              Finally a book with actual real tips and usefull info on how to lessen that debt load. I think that every high school student should have one of these along with their parents, it sure would make everyones life a little easier. I love all of the real life stories it made it alot easier to relate than some of the other how to books out there.
