5 out of 5 stars Useful and practical ways to address diversity!.......2003-02-21

Opening Doors by Diana Newman not only provides excellent background and statistics on diverse donors, but many concrete suggestions and examples of "how tos" which are already proving to be extremely helpful as our foundation develops its outreach to attract more diverse donors.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for Philanthropist.......2003-02-15

I work in the world of non-profit organizations. Often looking to foundations to help my projects, or others projects. This book is very useful to me and I believe it would be to others like me. Understanding how the system works from the organization of foundations to the work of raising money is very helpful in the research of how to recieve grants from these foundations. I think this work should be continued further into looking at who gets grants, culturally, and why. This book truly has opened doors, as well as worlds, into discussions about the money flow in our nations melting pot.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, comprehensive, and useful.......2003-02-08

As Emmet Carson points out in the introduction to Opening Doors, "successful fund development occurs from effectively carrying out and communicating the organization's mission" and to succeed the "heretofore largely taboo" issues of culture and race must be dealt with appropriately and sensitively. Ms. Newman provides a panoramic view of what these issues are and provides practical, step by step advice in how to deal with them.

Diana Newman provides a overview of the problems faced by community philanthropic agencies and provides detailed strategies on how to deal with them. Newman has extensive experience herself in these areas and has invited other contributors to provide detailed insights based on their experience. The book discusses cultural groupings that really matter in philanthropic fund raising and these are subtly and importantly different than groupings used by the US Census. There is an extraordinary level of detail and statistics that are brought to bear on this topic. This is book that anyone who is managing a community philanthropic organization should read and should consult as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers to Diana Newman.......2003-02-07

She has taken the difficult topic of fundraising in minority communities and written about it with candor and intelligence. It's wonderful to have such a thoughtful and well researched book on the topic. I recommend that everyone involved in philanthropy read this important book.

4 out of 5 stars A Larger View of a Caring Community.......2003-02-05

If Philanthropy is about building a better life for everyone in the world community, i.e. seeing ourselves as citizens of the planet; then, Opening Doors: Pathways to Diverse Donors, is a useful guide for thoughtful fundraisers. This book is a well-researched, well-documented look at different cultural perspectives on giving...how to include and empower those ethnic groups who are living the American Dream and want to give back in ways that are culturally meaningful to them. Bravo to Diana Newman for taking a broader view of community and studying in-depth what have heretofore been invisible groups of resourceful, caring people.

Book Description

The focus of this manual is not what provisions to include in a given contract, but instead how to express those provisions in prose that is free ofthe problems that often afflict contracts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quick read with helpful tips.......2007-09-05

This book provides a good desk reference for best practices in contract drafting. Although focused primarily on commercial transactions, the tips are helpful for all areas of contracts. Highly Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2007-03-10

Bought this book after reading some of the author's articles and the rave reviews here. It is more like a style guide (it focuses on tenses, font, grammar) than a substantive legal drafting guide. It is very nitpicky regarding the English language, to the level where if you adhered to every rule, you would be closer to a fuddy duddy phD candidate type than a practitioner. It reminds me of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. I much prefer Charles Fox's Working With Contracts - What Law School Doesn't Teach You, which is more practice-oriented and actually explains each clause, and its the purpose and meaning. Every junior associate should receive Fox's book as a present when they start their first year.

5 out of 5 stars It could threaten my job security..........2007-01-07

As a contract litigation attorney I'd be worried if more people were to buy this book. Luckily for me the vast majority of lawyers and people who draft agreements apparently have not. Thus, I'm not worried about my job. It was actually an enjoyable read, too.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have!.......2006-11-11

Any attorney actively involved in the drafting of contracts must have this manual. I am general counsel for a product development and manufacturing firm and have been actively using the guidance of Ken Adams' book for several months now on a variety of contracts, including overhauling our standard contracts. Not only is it improving my efficiency, but the feedback from members of our company is very positive. I cannot state it any better than Ken does in his preface to this manual. If you agree with the premise of his preface, as I do, then you will find this to be an invaluable and indispensable tool.

Answering the need presented by a much-changed commercial climate, entrepreneurial journalist Applegate has retooled this business classic. Some of the ideas are a little off the wall, but for the most part, it is stuff you might be able to use...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ideas for small businesses!.......2002-09-10

I think every small business owner should read this book -- full of excellent, and often basic (but overlooked) ideas and tips for making the most of your business.

5 out of 5 stars Good to great ideas for your small business.......2002-07-17

The new edition of Jane Applegate's "201 Great Ideas for Your Small Business" provided me with some great inspiration for my own small business. I particularly enjoyed reading the examples of real-life small business owners who took their great ideas and ran with them...to the bank! While not every tip would work for every entrepreneur, I've gotten enough ideas from this book that it easily pay for itself (and then some!). I recommend it to any business owner looking for some new and fresh ideas.

      4 out of 5 stars Number 202: MARKET YOU!.......2001-05-28

This book has some great tips, but when it comes to achieving corporate and community visibility, nothing replaces a *personal* publicity plan. To position your small business, you have to position YOURSELF. Bottom line is that people have to know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should do business with you.

      1 out of 5 stars Not Recommended.......2001-03-09

The Author does have some good titbits of information but they are very basic. Most of us know how to buy a computer by now.

On page 324 she advises the use of "masquiladoras". This is precisely what good businesses are attempting to avoid, namely exploitation of foreign workers. Has the author worked in one of these factories? does she know the working conditions of these people? There has to be some other "Great Ideas" that benefit all involved and not just owners of the company! Hello WTO!

I advise another book Grow Your Business by Mark Hendriks far more informative

        Book Description

How are democracy and market reforms faring in East Central Europe and the former Soviet Union? Is civil society expanding or shrinking? Are the media free or fettered by official constraints? To what degree are nations governed by the rule of law? Are human rights respected? Do taxation and trade policies, property rights reforms, banking laws, privatization and macroeconomic policies encourage or encumber private sector development and economic growth?

In a pellucid resource volume, Nations in Transit-1998, leading regional specialists and Freedom House experts respond to a checklist of 46 indicators for 28 countries in seven key areas: political process, civil society, independent media, rule of law, governance and public administration, privatization and economic reform.

The results are incisive, authoritative, and comprehensive country-by-country reports which assess the progress of ex-Communist nations in ridding themselves of repressive political systems and inefficient statist economies. As an added dimension, Freedom House, which for a quarter century has rated political rights and civil liberties around the world in its benchmark Annual Survey of Freedom, developed a rating system which allows for a comparative analysis of countries in terms of political and market reforms.

Nations in Transit-1998 is an invaluable resource and reference tool for government and non-government agencies, schools and universities of all sizes, and individuals who are interested in better understanding the political, economic, and legal institutions that comprise the infrastructure on which the transition to more open markets and societies depend. This is a stunning addition to the linkage of hard data and theory construction. As Robert L. Bartley, editor of the Wall Street Journal notes: "Freedom House's survey is the most systematic, most comprehensive and most reliable survey of the individual's status in the world's political systems."

The remarkable business model established by Walt Disney at Disneyland and Walt Disney World becomes a model for your internet business. Walt Disney was an innovator. This book, by a Disney outsider, is an independent examination of Disney's most powerful business methods and how they can be applied to an online business.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Too Little Magic.......2004-07-13

When I first got this book I was looking for something that would increase my my web site's business. I thought that using a business strategy that Walt Disney used would be unique and maybe would make my site unique. However, what I read was really just a rehash of what all the rest of the web site business books say; only in a much smaller package. Simple. Succinct. No frills. This book reads more like notes taken in a college class then by someone who really knows the subject and who wants everyone to understand it. And at a listed price of $20 US, it is a bit costly. And don't believe the claim of a 800 page web site to back up the book. Maybe I'm just blind, but I couldn't find those 800 pages. I did find a very simple web site that provided mighty few resources to back up that 800 page claim.

Over all this book was a big disappointment. If you must read it, get it at the library and save your money for a more comprehensive book on web site marketing or maybe Mr. Hamilton's book on Disney Magic.

5 out of 5 stars More Magic from Rich Hamilton.......2004-05-14

In just three sections, Rich gives us a foundation, an internet business strategy, and and implementation techniques as to how to apply that Disney Magic to our internet business, our websites, and even our home-life too - and does it in his typically fun fashion.

Lots of real life examples, plus quotes, trivia and even an exclusive website for readers all combine to make learning a pleasure, and give you plenty of tools to build a better online presence. It's one of those books that I tend to refer to time and time again - to recap information, and to get guidance in new or challenging situations. I have successfully used the advice contained within to my advantage on many occasions.

A great list of suggested further reading, lots of useful links, and a comprehensive index round out this book and make it invaluable in both your business and your home life. I would recommend this book to anyone !

          -Rob.

                Book Description

How do rural development programs, especially those run by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), cope in a time of structural adjustment policies and economic liberalization?

Although the number of NGOs has exploded as structural adjustment policies have restricted governments from providing many basic services, nonetheless the contributors to Rural Progress, Rural Decay find that NGOs can make little headway in promoting equitable development and "poor people's entrepreneurship" in what remains an essentially big business dominated economic and political environment.

Using Ecuador as a prototype of many other countries, Rural Progress, Rural Decay explores the adverse consequences of neoliberal macroeconomic policies on equitable development , and compares them with experiences elsewhere in Latin America and other parts of the developing world.

For students of Latin American development, and those interested in the effects of liberalization policies on local communities worldwide.

5 out of 5 stars Dreadful policies in sharp focus.......2003-11-05

The market, like fire, makes a good servant but a poor master. When put to socially useful work by the forces of democracy in an open society, it can be wonderfully creative. When allowed to run wild, especially in settings of historically polarized asset distributions, it can be immensely destructive. This book surveys the burned-over landscape left behind when the ideologues of the free market turn loose the fire under conditions where the forces of democracy are much too weak to keep it under effective social control.

The discussion focuses largely on one country, Ecuador, and pays special attention to the ways in which the economic and social fabric of its rural areas has been ever more heavily damaged in recent years. Yet the book's message is far more general. It develops a theoretical framework that is broadly applicable to most of the Third World and offers specific case studies that illustrate conditions rampant there. The book also spells out the huge political task of building an effective democracy that can tame the market and bring to the fore its creative side. The most important, and most difficult, political challenges pertain to development in the countryside, especially the creation of rural purchasing power. Progress is today jeopardized by the pyromaniacs of the free market ensconced in the international economic institutions and their academic infrastructures. Meanwhile, the flames are rising over the world's poorest rural areas.

                  Book Description

This thorough and compelling book offers a long-run perspective on the European economy from 1500 to the present day, and compares Europe's position of world dominance in the nineteenth century with its vacillating fortunes in the twentieth century.

Europe is set specifically within an international context to illustrate how it influenced the rest of the world and how in turn the latter helped to shape the pattern of European development. The authors explain why Europe overtook the formerly advanced Eastern civilizations and how this resulted in the growing inequality among the nations of the world which is such a marked feature in the present day. They then trace the development of the European economy within the context of the international economy and analyze the reasons for its rise to world dominance in the nineteenth century and then its collapse and revival in the twentieth century.

Europe in the International Economy 1500 to 2000 will be of interest to students and scholars of economic history and international economics.
