Book Description
Since the beginning of scholarly writing about the informal economy in the mid-1970s, the debate has evolved from addressing survival strategies of the poor to considering the implications for national development and the global economy. Simultaneously, research on informal politics has ranged from neighborhood clientelism to contentious social movements basing their claims on a variety of social identities in their quest for social justice. Despite related empirical and theoretical concerns, these research traditions have seldom engaged in dialogue with one another. Out of the Shadows brings leading scholars of the informal economy and informal politics together to address how globalization has influenced local efforts to resolve political and economic needsand how these seemingly separate issues are indeed deeply related.
In addition to the editors, contributors are Javier Auyero, Miguel Angel Centeno, Sylvia Chant, Robert Gay, Mercedes González de la Rocha, José Itzigsohn, Alejandro Portes, and Juan Manuel Ramírez Sáiz.

Customer Reviews:
A great book overall.......2007-09-02
This outline was tailored to the Dukeminier Property Casebook, our class casebook, so it was a real great help. The language is simple, the rules laid out, and the examples that follow are also good. The author did an excellent job at explaining seemingly contrary cases, and sometimes even gave his own take on an issue. However, the way the book was organized was a bit confusing at times. Because every topic was divided into sections and subsections, and then into more subsections, I frequently got lost and had to flip pages back and forth, trying to figure out exactly where I was. This book would have been a lot better if it had a table-of-contents type chart from all the headings so you had a picture in your mind of where you are and where you are going. Otherwise your only option is to re-write the headings into your notes -- only then can you see the "big picture". Another problem with this book (and I guess it applies to all Emanuel outlines) is that its lacking in practice questions. There are a few, but nothing like Examples and Explanations. So if you really want to master the subject, you have to get both books. Examples and Explanations is a great book too, but it isn't organized as clearly and concisely, it's style is more fluid, like reading a book with paragraphs. So both books are lacking in some respects as compared to the other.

Gets the general idea but somewhat disorganized.......2007-01-07
I had a Copyright class this past semester. My book was organized very differently from the supplement, so it's not like the information isn't there, you just had to dig around to find various things that corresponds to your text. Also, since the supplement covers all IP subjects, don't expect a real in-depth treatment in any particular subject.

very useful outline.......2007-09-05
Property can be extremely dull and difficult to memorize for your law school exams...this book provides a great outline of the concepts and good example problems to practice on. love it that so many people sell their used copies so cheap...can get great deals in law school supplements through amazon!
Emanel's Property.......2000-03-25
This was a very helpful supplement to the course material for the semester. It explains complex property theories in easy to manage summaries.

property book.......2007-03-09
The book was lost in the mail and I had to buy a new one from the bookstore here. I was then sent a replacement book which I had to return to Amazon.
popular ... but why?.......2006-05-18
After completing my first year of law school, I really wonder why so many professors use this textbook. More than half the people I spoke with in my class thought the casebook's usability was poor or worse.
Property is not a difficult class, aside from future estates and related issues (Rule Against Perpetuities). The hardest thing about property is knowing the jurisdictional views on various aspects of property law, and this casebook does only an OK job highlighting that. It is basically a lot of memorization and the learning of that material could have been substantially aided by organizing the book differently.
Additionally, many of its cases are not sufficiently edited, thereby necessitating that one read through too much irrelevant information to get to the legal issue. My other case books are much more balanced on this issue.
As a last note, the production quality is lower than what I would expect for its price. The paper chosen and the fair reproduction of what photos exist in the book contrast strongly with its price.
I suppose this sounds like a laundry list of complaints, but the book compares poorly to my other casebooks, simply stated.
Not bad..........2006-04-21
This is probably one of the easier to understand case books I have read. It is incredibly dull, but it covers all the concepts well and includes some useful graphics (as well as some pointless ones). It's certainly worth its cost.
Kinda Lousy.......2006-02-14
This is easily the WORST casebook I have ever owned.
LOUSY for learning future interest and possessory estates.
LOUSY for learning mortgages.
LOUSY for learning adverse possession.
Mainly lousy, lousy, lousy.
Don't buy this book without purchasing a hell of a study aid b/c you won't learn jack from it since it's horribly written.
Don't buy this book w/out purchasing a hell of a good pair of reading glasses b/c the print is practically microscopic.
I can't believe I have to suffer through another property course w/this terrible book.
confusion, eternal confusion.......2005-12-12
Despite the opinions of other reviewers on this site, this is not a well written book. I am speaking of the Future Interests section in particular.
In order explain concepts, the book uses terms that are defined later in the chapter, and simply gives examples without clarifying.
I think the authors are capable of explaining these concepts in an understandable way, but fail to do so. This is evident once you use the Gilberts outline written by Dukeminier, where concepts are well defined. Perhaps this is a ploy to sell more Gilberts. Regardless, the textbook leaves much to be desired.

Start Here.......2007-06-14
If you are an entrepreneur, want to be an entrepreneur, or want to avoid becoming an entrepeneur who loses more money than they make, this is the book.
Tom Ehrenfeld covers all the key topics about financing, selling, marketing, managing, etc. And he does so concisely and with plenty of examples from real businesses, including his favorite ice cream man. Moreover, the book is, unlike many business books, very well written.
When my clients ask me for advice about starting their business, I tell them to read this book first, and then ask me questions. If they don't want to or don't agree with everything in Startup Garden, they simply aren't ready to be an entrepreneur.
Approachable and engaging style, but lacking content........2002-09-02
I've been devouring "startup" and entrepreneur books as of late, and they each face the same problems--vagueness. This book is no exception. Reading the reviews, and even while beginning the book, I thought to myself, "This is the one!" mostly because I liked the premise of integrating the "passion" part of the small business along with the pragmatics. The writing style is a bonus too--not condescending and very approachable. However, in the end, I was disappointed. Yes, the author outlines the basic steps of approaching your startup--conceptualizing, researching, financing, etc--but falls short of providing you details of HOW exactly to accomplish this. What good is your passion for a small business if you can't even get it off the ground? After you've exhausted the usual suspects--the small business center, entrepreneur/startup books like this one, and your local library--then what are you supposed to do? And how do the big players (like the anecdotes given in this book) make it from being a regular person with a little seed of an idea to CEO of a large company? That's the sort of nitty-gritty we need, not pumping us full of the already well-known fact that every business needs a business plan.
Do you want to succeed in business and have fun?.......2002-05-06
This book has two themes that resonated strongly with me; 1) find your passion, and 2) get started. It is full of practical advice, compelling examples, and it has a wonderfully helpful section on finances that will appeal to even the most number-phobic readers. Read this book and save yourself months or years of running in the wrong direction with your entrepreneurial desires.
Finally, a book for the rest of us..........2002-04-04
Are you out to become the next Bill Gates? Me neither. I don't want to found the next Microsoft or Coca-Cola, I am just thinking about starting my own business. Sure, I want to be successful, but I also want to have a life. A real life, where my work sustains me but does not control me.
So many books today are about dominating the world via internet or "how I burned through $40million dollars of venture capital and lived to write this book..." That's not me, and that's not the Startup Garden.
Tom Ehrenfeld has written a book for the rest of us. For the real folks with the motivation and the will to create a business of their own, but still wise enough to know they could use a little help, some sound advice and a shoulder to cry on now and then. This book offers all three.
Yes, I found the information well organized, the writing folksy and direct, the additional resources helpful but that's not enough. What's unique about the Startup Garden is: it the first book I've read that treats the dream of building a business that reflects your passions and sustains your journey with respect. Truly, a worthwhile read. This author "gets it".

Book Description
Though famine has affected many parts of the world in the twentieth century, the conditions that produce famine -- extreme poverty, armed conflict, economic and political turmoil, and climate shocks -- are now most prevalent in Africa. Researchers differ on how to address this problem effectively, but their arguments are often not informed by empirical analysis from a famine context. Broadening current theories and models of development for conquering famine, Famine in Africa grounds its findings in long-term empirical research, especially on the impact of famine on households and markets.
The authors present the results of field work and other research from numerous parts of Africa, with a particular focus on Botswana, Ethiopia, Niger, Rwanda, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. With these data, the authors explain the factors that cause famines and assess efforts to mitigate and prevent them. Famine in Africa is an important resource for international development specialists, students, and policymakers.
"A famine is a catastrophic disruption of the social, economic, and institutional systems that provide for food production, distribution, and consumption. For a long time famines have been considered anomalies -- crises that must be remedied by short-term relief activities so that the normal processes of development can be resumed... We now know differently. Famines can destroy not just life, but also the hope of development. They can make progress infinitely more difficult than it had been before. Relief operations alone, even if successful in terms of saving lives, are not a sound basis for a sustainable future. More -- much more -- is needed." -- from the Introduction

This is a wonderful book.......2006-03-07
This book is helping me organize my finances. I love it! It talks about different ways to budget. There are a lot of commonsense principles, but there are methods of budgeting and investing which I hadn't considered. People seem to be taking all of the suggestions and following them religiously. I take small grains of wisdom and try to apply them one at a time. It seems to be working.
I love this book!.......2005-12-14
I bought this book a few years ago after having bought and read other personal finance guides. I found it to be well written, well organized and easy to read. It gave me great practical information for how to start investing/saving with very little money and because of this book I finally got the nerve to do just that. I have always been a financially organized person but this book gave me information that helped me grow from being just organized to being savvy too. It has had a great impact on my life and I am buying a few copies to share with friends. I think this book would be especially good for people who want to invest soon and just don't know how to get started. I highly recommend it!
