Strategic Issues in Public-Private Partnerships: An International Perspective
ASIN: 0275969002 |
Book Description
Providing an in-depth case study of a highly successful public-private partnership, this book offers valuable insights for privatizing an existing public service. A mix of theory and empirical analysis, the study initially creates and explains a model for the Privatization Transfer Process, which serves as a guide for contracting out services. Drawing on the experience of the Orlando Orange County Expressway Authority when it privatized toll road operations, the book traces the steps taken through the initial decision to privatize, the creation of the Request for Proposal, and the review and rating of three bidder responses. It then follows the awarding of the bid to the Florida Toll Services and the transition from public to private control. The book also considers technical and pricing concerns as well as issues pertaining to contract management. In conclusion, it evaluates the entire effort. By offering a detailed analysis of a very successful privatization experience, the book provides a useful tool for those concerned with privatization issues.
Book Description
The result of eight years of Nygren's work with first-semester students in five different law schools, this book melds information about the legal system usually found in legal methods books with information about study skills usually found in books with a "how to succeed in law school" focus.
The book uses one area of law the implied warranty of merchantability as it applies to food to illustrate various legal issues and the skills needed to master them. It introduces basic legal concepts and vocabulary in the context of one hypothetical case, and then focuses on the structure of cases and types of reasoning courts use. When finished with the book, readers will have the background they need in order to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of legal materials.
A teacher's manual is also available.
Customer Reviews:
Best starter.......2006-07-12
This is the best little book I have found for those wanting just a basic starter in the law. It is concise and clear, a good overview for the summer before law school or those considering applying.
Excellent primer on the study of law.......2002-07-16
This is a book, along with _Bramble Bush_, by Karl Llewellyn, and _Introduction to Legal Reasoning_, by Edward Levi, that all prospective law students ought to read. Ms Nygren's method is to introduce the prospective law student to the concept and strategy of legal thinking and legal study.
In her introduction, she cites two reasons for having written the book: (1) to provide information about the legal system, and (2) to provide information about the study skills necessary for success.
These two themes are repeatedly addressed in this book. It is very tightly focused and dry, but if you push yourself through the book you will learn a lot. Ms Nygren starts the book with a hypothetical situation--in which you, the reader, are a lawyer, and a client comes in with a complaint about a restaurant's food--and then she takes you through the process of identifying the legal issues in the case, how to advocate for your client, et cetera. Though she addresses only very small portion of "the law"--the liability faced by a restaurant--the detailed and close manner in which she takes the reader through this portion of the law is of obvious relevance to the rest of the law.
Ms Nygren provides a very comprehensive introduction to the structure of legal reasoning, and the kind of thinking needed by law students who wish to excel in their studies.
Necessary and sufficient.......2001-04-10
This short book is clear, helpful and on target. I read it most of it before starting law school last year. The book accurately describes the legal learning process, the process of the law, and the experience of law school. This book is a must read for anyone heading to law school.
A great place to start when considering law school!.......1999-05-01
This book offers a wonderful base of knowledge for someone who is considering lawschool who has little to no pre-law experience (e.g. someone with an English or History degree). It gives the reader a good sense of understanding of the legal system with easy to understand definitions and examples. Through the use of one particular legal issue, and the help of several different case examples, the author enables the reader to see the legal process as it goes forward and backwards through the court system. You finish this book with a much clearer understanding of what to expect from law school, from casebooks to exams, and what you may be able to expect in professional lawyer/client setting. It even recommends and illustrates helpful ways to study and make it through that difficult first year. For such a tiny book it covers and enormous distance from start to finish. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Mollusc species currently constitute a major threat to sustainable agriculture, associated with cultivation of new crops, intensification of agricultural production systems, and the spread through human trade and travel of species adapted to these modified environments. In some crops, their significance is only now becoming apparent with the decline in the importance of other pest groups which can be effectively controlled. This book includes examinations of the deployment of molluscicides in baits, specific crop situations from around the world and synopses of the current pest status of mollusc cpecies or species groups and the progress towards the development of solutions.

They have become increasingly important as crop pests in agriculture and as vectors of helinth parasites in humans and domestic livestock. This book is aimed at both students and professionals concerned with conservation of molluscan communities in natural habitats and control of pesiferous species. It draws together the available information on the diversity of organisms that constitute the natural enemies of terrestrial molluscs. Customer Reviews:
An excellent helper guide to ANYONE (but particularly women and minorities) wanting to start a small business........2006-10-24
I loved this book. And in Amazon rating terms that means it's a 5 star. As I read the chapters and appendixes I couldn't help but feel that the author really knew his stuff. And he presented it in a simple and clear way. He does not go overboard on any one subject, but he says what he needs to say to educate the reader. He also clearly addresses his target audience, something many authors don't do or fail to do when trying. Very refreshing!
This book includes a great mix of chapters that cover what wanta-be entrepreneurs and small business owners need to think about and know about if they are going to be successful running their own businesses. The 14 chapters are as follows:
1. Get focused - Quick!
2. Setting Up Shop
3. Legal Requirements
4. Business Insurance
5. Planning
6. Funding
7. SBA Loans
8. SBA's 8(a) Program
9. Setting Up the Books
10. Marketing
11. Purchasing
12. Management
13. Image and Etiquette
14. Eye to the Future
Chapter 8 covered material I had not read before. I'm glad he included it here. And the Business Plan Questionnaire found at Appendix A was awesome. I hope the author plans to use it as an introduction in a business plan book I'd love to see him write. The more we hear from this author the better the entrepreneurial community will be.
this is not a one time read~~~add to your collection.......2005-07-24
Don't pick it up unless you have time to finish.
This book is a "must have" reference guide for all who are in business or want to be in business. It is to be kept at your desk as a ready reference.
That's right. I bought the book as a gift for my son who has business. Judging from the picture, I thought this was just another egoticial brother telling his sucesss story that my son could possible relate too. Wrong!!!! Dont judge!!! This book is for every body; men, women, old, young.
From the gate this book is a serious detailed road map for all who are unsure about what to do or where to start. Even if you know what to do he has you reevaluating your next step, for the best outcome be it planning or implementation.
Each chapter is written in an in a frank, honest, get serious, stay focused tone that prompts you to think about the best way to use time, money and technology, yet written with simpiclty and clarity for ease in understanding and application.
The book also has pictures of mouse pads and other business tools through out the book that draws your eye to the idea it is expressing for a quick reference.
Home based business are discussed in detail with a listing of ideas for entrepreneurship and business plan writing .
It is worth the investment if your circumstances don't allow you to attend two to three semesters of business classes. You will feel like Bill is right there talking with you helping you produce, market and sell your product.
I am buying the book for my self next payday. Mama's can run businessess too.

Book Description
The language of the call center comes from many fields including telecommunications, engineering, and computer programming. The Call Center Dictionary not only explains what a particular technology is, but also how it can help improve relationships with customers.
Customer Reviews:
OK Reference for a Basic Orientation to Call Center Jargon.......2001-07-04
First, what this book is NOT: it is neither exhaustive nor in-depth. (The fact that the book is only 277 trade-size pages should suggest this.) It is also not particularly helpful to the complete new-comer to the call center environment, especially not Customer Service Representatives. But then it doesn't really claim to do all that. It is written more for, say, people in the finance or human resources department who want to learn a little about what the techno-geeks in systems delivery are talking about. Or for new MIS analysts who may have come from some other performance measurement background, but who haven't grasped all the call center jargon yet. And also for the call center managers who know THEIR job, but who are baffled when they try to talk to anyone in marketing about how the center operates.
So, on to what it IS: this is a dictionary, so you are presumed to have some knowledge of the language to begin with. And the authors try to offer some breadth of the available technology without being too proprietary. The entries concerning CTI (computer-telephone integration) and web-enabled technology are a little sparse, but the core concepts (regarding Automated Call Distribution) are relatively reliable. The typos can be off-putting, but maybe they'll get that improved in the 3rd edition.
I wouldn't rely on this book alone as my "Complete Guide" to call center operations (I hope the title was the product of an over-active marketer rather than the authors' choice), but is is a HELPFUL guide. If you are looking for detailed material, pull out your user manuals and read the README.TXT files that come with your applications. If you are looking for a general overview of the terrain, this book is a good tool to have at your disposal. If you leave it at your desk, you may be surprised at the number of people who ask to borrow it.
A very useful reference.......2000-11-28
At the moment, I do not know a long-term course training call center resources specialist, and people doing this job usually come from other field. The book is full of useful hints to help people with a good, but general, background in connecting it to the reality of call centers and every day activities in CRM. As usual for this kind of books, it is not a detailed reference, but I found in it satisfying answers to many doubts arised about the correct use of words and acronyms.
It's a start.......2000-09-16
Aside from the spelling and grammatical errors, I found this book extremely helpful in getting me past the clutter of acronyms that are so prevalent in the telecom field. Unfortunately, this is also one of the very few books that is willing to define most of the terms for you. In that regard, I think that this is a great book that serves its purpose. Although I would really like to see a more updated version.
Another Dawson Grammatical Error Filled Book.......2000-08-28
I have been a senior analyst in call centers for years and am not very impressed with the amount of thought that went into this book. Dawson / Bodine define terms, but they do not give examples. In today's call centers, I am uncovering numerous mistakes being made by management and reporting analysts in their understanding of what elements are important to better running a call center. Example: This book should have given examples of how Average Speed of Answer (ASA) is calculated, then explained that taking a straight average does not give you a true picture of the call center's performance. What are key measures to a call center success? I too read this book and found myself scratching my head. If this is the quality of book coming out in the future, I think I will stop reading.
Keep in mind that Dawson is (or was) an editor of a call center magazine. I have now purchased 3 books by Dawson and I am getting turned off. The amount of spelling errors and grammar mistakes in all his publications is overwhelming.

Book Description
The purpose of
Technology and Markets for Knowledge is to reconcile two terms that the economic tradition has opposed for a long time: the market and knowledge. The editor and contributors focus on the transformations that affect the processes of creation, accumulation, and exchange of scientific, technological, and commercial knowledge by organizations.
The first part of this book analyzes knowledge markets basis. The first three chapters rely on the idea that knowledge is the organization's fundamental capital. Technological and scientific knowledge is becoming more fragmented. Pieces of knowledge may be articulated due to sophisticated R&D technologies. Markets for knowledge solely concern individual knowledge units which form the knowledge base of the firm. These knowledge units are capitalizable and adaptable to different contexts.
The second part of this book extends these developments by providing sectoral illustrations (Chemistry, Bio-pharmaceuticals, Semiconductors, and Software). Firms are focusing on their own competencies, which entails an increasing externalization of some tasks, even the more complex ones for which the recourse to an external business service is legitimated by competencies-related motivations, economies of scale, and economies of scope. These knowledge providers allow firms to improve the efficiency of their innovative and productive activities. Consequently, the role of markets for knowledge is analyzed both with respect to the decomposition of the productive processes and the disintegration of the innovative ones.

From the beginning, the building of a unified Europe was based on a misunderstanding, and a fear. Not fear of Communism, but fear of Germany. To assuage this persistent fear, based in the past, France and Germany decided to lead Europe together.
Mad cows and toxic wastes flowing from one country to another, diplomats working behind closed doors, Germany holding the rest of Europe in a monetary strait-jacket and the French dreaming of the days when they were a superpower -Andre Gauron regales us with the failures of this union and its chaotic progress.
