Book Description

Sustainability of pension systems, intergeneration fiscal equity under population aging, and accounting for health care benefits for future retirees are examples of problems that cannot be solved without understanding the nature of population forecasts and their uncertainty. Similarly, the accuracy of population estimates directly affects both the distributions of formula-based government allocations to sub-national units and the apportionment of political representation. The book develops the statistical foundation for addressing such issues. Areas covered include classical mathematical demography, event history methods, multi-state methods, stochastic population forecasting, sampling and census coverage, and decision theory. The methods are illustrated with empirical applications from Europe and the U.S.

For statisticians the book provides a unique introduction to demographic problems in a familiar language. For demographers, actuaries, epidemiologists, and professionals in related fields, the book presents a unified statistical outlook on both classical methods of demography and recent developments. To facilitate its classroom use, exercises are included. Over half of the book is readily accessible to undergraduates, but more maturity may be required to benefit fully from the complete text. Knowledge of differential and integral calculus, matrix algebra, basic probability theory, and regression analysis is assumed.

Juha M. Alho is Professor of Statistics, University of Joensuu, Finland, and Bruce D. Spencer is Professor of Statistics and Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research, Northwestern University. Both have contributed extensively to statistical demography and served in advisory roles and as statistical consultants in the field.

Information on future mortality trends is essential for population forecasts, public health policy, actuarial studies, and many other purposes. Realising the importance of such needs, this volume contains contributions to the theory and practice of forecasting mortality in the relatively favourable circumstances in developed countries of Western Europe.
In this context techniques from mathematical statistics and econometrics can provide useful descriptions of past mortality. The naive forecast obtained by extrapolating a fitted model may give as good a forecast as any but forecasting by extrapolation requires careful justification since it assumes the prolongation of historical conditions. On the other hand, whilst it is generally accepted that scientific and other advances will continue to impact on mortality, perhaps dramatically so, it is impossible to quantify more than the outline of future consequences with a strong degree of confidence. The decision to modify an extrapolation of a model fitted to historical data (or conversely choosing not to modify it) in order to obtain a forecast is therefore strongly influenced by subjective and judgmental elements, with the quality of the latter dependent on demographic, epidemiological and indeed perhaps more general considerations. The thread running through the book reflects therefore the necessity of integrating demographic, epidemiological, and statistical factors to obtain an improvement in the prediction of mortality.

Regardless of two glowing reviews that preceed by those who clearly Never read any real preparatory materials - I am here to tell that this book is worthless. I keep it in my bathroom in the event one day I run out of paper. So what then is in fact good material? Go straight to "Strategies & Tactics" by Walton and Emanuel. It is well organized, detailed, intelligently written, and thorough. Unlike the absurd sweeping generalizations made by Talamo's text, "Strategies & Tactics" delineates the several different types of questions, how to rephrase certain questions, and how to find the otherwise impossible answer. Each of the MBE subjects are treated separately because they each have a unique style affliated with that area of the law. Example: Con Law vs. Real Property. There follows each dedicated section of MBE law, MBE style questions, followed in turn by detailed answers that illucidate why a particular answer is correct or wrong, and what the trick or trap has been laid by the writers of the Exam. And a whole lot more.

Great help for the MBE.......2004-03-03

I read this book AFTER I failed the NY bar exam the first time around. This book was very helpful in helping to understand the MBE and the best method for studying. I felt much more confident and less stressed taking the bar again this past February, and I am surprised how much of that I can attribute to what I learned in Mr. Talamo's book! I highly recommend that ANYONE taking the MBE read this book. Then spend a few days using his techniques & see the difference! I plan to give this book as a gift to others taking the MBE too!

Best book on "How to Study for the MBE" Ive ever read!.......2004-01-06

Best book ever read on the taking of the MBE. Not only does Talamo tell you what to study, he tells you HOW. Ive read dozens of books on taking the MBE. Talamo is by far the best. He explains how to tackle the test itself. He has an easy to follow strategy for focusing on the most important areas covered on the MBE, and how these areas should be handled. If you have mountains of books from your bar review course and don't know what to do with all of it, this book is a must! Im a repeater for this bar exam and this is the first book I have ever read that is helping me learn how to study for this exam. This book is one of those you will read from cover to cover over and over again. It has given me a plan for taking this exam. As a result, Im not as stressed out over how Im going to learn all this material. Instead, I am learning how to focus on the most important stuff and learn it really well. Talamo explains how it is a waste of time to try and learn everything fairly well. He shows how you will do better on the exam by knowing just a few key areas extremely well. I can't say enough about this book. It has taken my anxiety level down a couple of notches, and given me a feeling of confidence that I CAN pass this exam!

Philipp Maier offers a unique examination of the extent to which governments and various interest groups have exerted pressure on central banks. The book looks in particular at the Deutsche Bundesbank - which acted as the blueprint for the European Central Bank (ECB) - and utilizes an original set of indicators to measure external pressure and support from the government and other institutions.

The author demonstrates that although some of the rhetoric of the Bundesbank may have been a response to political pressure, the operation and conduct of German monetary policy has not been influenced. The role of various pressure groups remains a more contentious issue, as there is evidence that the Bundesbank may have acted to appease the financial sector. The author also finds that a high degree of public support towards the Bundesbank has helped to mitigate the effect of external forces. As the ECB was closely modeled on its German counterpart, the author is able to extend his analysis to the European level and draw out explicit predictions for the ECB. He argues that external pressure is unlikely to influence the conduct of monetary policy, as it will be less efficient and organized, and public support is likely to be high. In the future, however, this could be jeopardized by a rapid enlargement of EMU which may result in more concentrated and powerful pressure groups.

This interesting empirical study of the effect of governments, interest groups and public support on the behavior and rhetoric of Central Banks will be welcomed by financial and monetary economists, students and scholars of European finance and European policymakers.
