    Book Description

Sustainable Marketing is structured around the traditional "4Ps" of marketing and explains how marketing mix decisions can and do influence environmental outcomes. Throughout the book, Donald A. Fuller advocates the conversion of consumption systems to a sustainable paradigm that represents a circular use of resources, not the linear approach (materials >products >consumption >disposal) that leads to the pollution of ecosystems. The book's running theme is that marketers can reinvent strategy and craft "win-win-win" solutions, where customers win (obtaining genuine benefits), organizations win (achieving financial objectives), and ecosystems win (ecosystem functioning is preserved or enhanced). The theme is vividly illustrated by 49 in-text exhibits of successful corporate environmental initiatives.

    'Creative and compelling.' Guardian

'Essential reading.' Head of the International Panel on Climate Change

If the whole world wanted to live like people in the United States we would need the resources of five planets like Earth. Simms shows how millions of us in the West are running up huge ecological debts: from the amount of oil and coal that we burn to heat our houses and run our cars, to what we consume and the waste that we create, the impact of our lifestyles is felt worldwide. Whilst these debts go unpaid, millions more living in poverty in the majority world suffer the burden of paying dubious foreign financial debts. The book explores a great paradox of our age: how the global wealth gap was built on ecological debts, which the world's poorest are now having to pay for. Highlighting how and why this has happened, he also shows what can be done differently in the future - and what steps we can take to stop pushing the planet to the point of environmental bankruptcy.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent work on ecological economics.......2006-01-15

It is more than three decades since Schumacher and Daly wrote the seminal works of ecological economics. While there have been numerous contributions to the field since then, the ideas have remained outside the mainstream. The rising spectre of climate change might be enough to change that though. The threat that climate change poses is the basis for Simms' argument for a new way of thinking about economics. Simms argues his case clearly without using jargon.

This book is a very accessible read for anyone interested in the problems of climate change and some possible solutions.

      Book Description

Research on consumption from an environmental perspective has exploded since the late 1990s. This important new volume cuts across disciplines to present the latest research in the field. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which addresses the problems of consumption both as a concept and as an economic and social force with high environmental impact. In the second part, the authors try to explain consumption as an attempt by individuals to satisfy different types of needs while simultaneously being embedded in certain lifestyles and constrained by time and daily routines. The final section looks at how change towards less environmentally damaging consumption patterns can be achieved through national sustainability and consumer policy measures, as well as through community building and individual action. In accordance with the transdisciplinary nature of ecological economics, the original contributions emanate from a variety of different perspectives to reflect the diversity of research in this growing field. By seriously exploring the role of consumption within ecological economics, this fine book will provide invaluable reading for students and researchers interested in sustainable consumption, ecological economics and consumer research.

            Description:
We present and discuss a method that allows the disaggregation of national Ecological Footprints by economic sector, detailed final demand category, sub-national area or socio-economic group. This is done by combining existing National Footprint Accounts with input-output analysis. Calculations in the empirical part are carried out by using supply and use tables for the United Kingdom, covering the reporting period 2000. Ecological Footprints are allocated to detailed household consumption activities following the COICOP classification system and to a detailed breakdown of capital investment. The method presented enables the calculation of comparable Ecological Footprints on all sub-national levels and for different socio-economic groups. The novelty of the approach lies in the use of input-output analysis to re-allocate existing Footprint accounts, in the detail of disaggregation by consumption category and in the expanded use of household expenditure data. This extends the potential for applications of the Ecological Footprint concept and helps to inform scenarios, policies and strategies on sustainable consumption. The method described in this paper can be applied to every country for which a National Footprint Account exists and where appropriate economic and environmental accounts are available. The approach helps to save time in data collection and improves the consistency between Ecological Footprint estimates for a particular human society from different researchers. For these reasons, the suggested methodology includes crucial steps on the way towards a standardisation of Ecological Footprint accounts.

              Description:
Denmark today carries one of the heaviest environmental tax burdens in the world, bringing in around 10% of public revenues. While evaluations have shown that the Danish CO"2 and other environmental taxes work as an effective measure to reduce emissions, a considerable barrier to increased use of these instruments today seems to be a widespread perception of their socially adverse effects. In this article, it is demonstrated that CO"2 taxes imposed on energy consumption in households, as well as in industry, do in fact tend to be regressive, and therefore have undesirable distributional effects. This holds especially for taxes imposed directly on households. To analyze this, we apply national consumer survey statistics in combination with input-output tables.

                  Description:
Production and consumption of meat and fish have serious consequences for global food security and the environment. An understanding of the factors that influence meat and fish consumption is important for developing a sustainable food production and distribution system. For a sample of 132 nations, we use ordinary-least-squares (OLS) regression to assess the effects of modernization and ecological context on per capita meat and fish consumption. We find that ecological conditions in a nation, such as resource availability and climate, influence meat and fish consumption. Additionally, indicators of modernization, particularly economic development, influence the consumption of both meat and fish. However, the effect of economic development on consumption patterns is distinctly different among geographic regions. We conclude that in order to understand national dietary patterns, researchers need to take into account not only ecological context and economic development, but also regional/cultural factors.

                    Description:
Household demand for better environmental quality is the key factor in the long-term global applicability of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. We argue that, for given consumer preferences, the threshold income level at which the EKC turns downwards or the equilibrium income elasticity changes sign from positive to negative depends on the ability to spatially separate production and consumption. We test our hypothesis by estimating the equilibrium income elasticities of five pollutants, using 1990 data for the United States. We find that the change in sign occurs at lower income levels for pollutants for which spatial separation is relatively easy as compared to pollutants for which spatial separation is difficult. Our results suggest that even high-income households in the United States have not yet reached the income level at which their demand for better environmental quality is high enough to cause the income-pollution relationship to turn downwards for all the pollutants that we analyzed.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books on law and the U.S. Constitution.......2007-02-17

This book is a classic text on judicial restraint and one of the best studies of constitutional law. Law professor Author Alexander M. Bickel was one of the most influential constitutional commentators of the 20th century, and this book is a masterwork. In it, Bickel famously coins the term "countermajoritarian difficulty" to describe his view that judicial review undermines democracy. Whether you are conservative or liberal, you will find his discussions on the role of the Supreme Court in our democratic society compelling and insightful.

                    5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2000-06-17

This book is one of the true classics of constitutional scholarship. Although written in 1962, the book still contains valuable lessons for current times. In a nutshell, Bickel's approach to judicial review is cautious, skeptical. He possesses doubts as to the reasoning put forward in Marbury v. Madison, the seminal decision laying the groundwork for U.S. judicial review. Yet he is wise enough to realize that in a constitutional democracy, the judiciary must exercise some power to check the other two branches. The inescapable tension between these two positions is what propels the book along. Written only several years after Brown v. Board of Education and just coming at the start of the Warren Court's run of activism, it reads almost as a historical novel at times. Bickel was one of the leading constitutional scholars of the second half of the 20th century, and this book is the earliest full exposition of his views. These views would change over the years before his untimely death in 1974 (compare this book with his final work, The Morality of Consent), but it is fun to see where he started from and how his thinking evolved.

I had some experience with business plans before starting my own company, however I was overwhelmed when starting the process for my own business. This book changed all of that. Not because it was easier to get my entire plan into a brief document (it wasn't) but because its effectiveness exceeded my expectations. In my approach to several angel investors, the document made the process and subsequent discussions a lot simpler, and allowed us to close a financing much sooner than I had expected. Although I was prepared (and had started to write) a traditional business plan, it was never necessary. The short version did it. While I can't say that the author's approach is for everybody and every type of enterprise, there's little doubt that the book can be helpful to most anyone contemplating (or in the process of) writing a plan. I found this book to be well written and accessible. Highly recommended.

My first business plan was a 70 page monstrosity. 20 years later I'm happy to follow the advice of Mr. Horan. One page is all you really need to keep your business humming along. Of course you will need some of the other statistical info and financials . . . later.

I personally learned to pare down my biz plans to 2 pages years ago and started teaching that concept to others. Now I'm a solid one-pager - Proposals, Marketing plans and business plans. I really don't believe anyone actually gets past the 3rd graph and pages of "why we are better than our competion" anyway. Get started now with this easy to read book.

I must admit I thought it was a bit lightweight with the drawings and such - it's more like a workbook. There could be a little more content. Not enough "there" there. However, you won't struggle through long and boring theories. You get to work immediately.

I assume this is a workbook for his business' seminars which probably flesh out the ideas more than this book. For that, it gets a 4. However it's totally worth buying to support your business.

Quick and easy read on how to quickly align your team around goals and objectives for your business. Easy step by step guide that leads to quick execution. This is a "how to" book and not a "why to" book.

The one page business plan is an extremely simple tool that will help you achieve clarity in your business. I found it extremely helpful and productive, and I highly recommend it for anyone thinking of starting a business or even for executives who are planning new campaigns.

good, if your proposals are typically book-sized documents and you want to slim them down to a digestible size.
not so good, if your proposals are already just a page or two in length. Better off with "Guerrilla Marketing for Consultants", which has very sensible proposal writing tips.

                          Book Description

Despite the fact that corporate revenues are higher than ever, corporate profits remain flat. To stand apart from the competition and succeed in the new economy, businesses need to stop competing on price and focus instead on value.

By meeting the highest needs of your company's premium customers, says master business strategist Thomas J. Winninger, you can maximize your value and charge full price. Just follow these strategies: define the essence of your business, communicate its tangible value, benchmark your uniqueness, and anticipate the changing needs of your best customers.

By selling value—not low price—your profits will soar.

The author is a superb speaker but his writing lacks substance. Although I admire his attempt at using practical examples, many of them were not applicable to my business. The substantive information was very good but could have been contained in a speech or article.

The author is laso a great speaker, much better at speaking than writing. The anecdotes are superficial as the book is a compilation of presentation slides written in an afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars What an idea stimulator!.......2001-11-09

Let's start with a premise: we'd all like to get full price for our goods and services. No one really wants to be on the losing end of a discount war. . . . and in that struggle, everybody loses. Full price sounds like a good idea. But, is it realistic? I began Winninger's latest book with a bit of skepticism.

Full Price begins with an emphasis on maximizing value perception. When I saw that phrase in the table of contents, I wondered what this book might say that hasn't already been said by countless authors beating the same drum. Aha! The difference is in the countless examples that illustrate every one of the author's points. Winninger walks his talk-the value of his book is certainly maximized by the real-life examples. I can't tell you how many ideas I gleaned from those examples-page after page of examples and best practices.

Winninger, founder of Winninger Institute for Market Strategy in Minneapolis, knows his stuff. He's a professional speaker and consultant who's worked with over a thousand companies in many fields. This is definitely a case of "been there, done that." You'll discover that value as you move through his 15 chapters. I chuckled when I noticed what the author did with the quotes at the start of each chapter. After quoting others for the first two chapters, he quoted himself for the rest! He must have enjoyed writing this book.

The book is organized very well. Chapter titles include Selling the Program, Vertical Integration, Segmenting Your Services to Targeted Customers, Owning the Customer's Buying Cycle, and Promoting Differences. This easy-to-read book gets more exciting as it continues, with chapters on Substantiating Value, Not Price; Living the Brand; Exploiting Technology; and Forging the Indestructible System. And every chapter is stuffed with best practice examples. Can you tell I was impressed with the way these examples brought the author's points to life?

The whole premise of the book is achieving Maximum Value Perception: seeking and fulfilling the highest need of your premium customer. Think about those words. Each is explained in the book, but let me share the questions that flow from the author's discussion: 1. Who is my premium customer? 2. What is my premium customer's highest need? 3. How do I determine my Maximum Value Perception? 4. How do I achieve Maximum Value Perception and receive full price? These questions are answered as the reader is stimulated, then we're off and running!

Fast read, summaries at the end of each chapter, validating footnotes, and a good index. This is a book you'll read eagerly, salivating at the thought of how you'll apply your learnings to overcome your competition. And this is a book you'll return to from time to time to stimulate more great ideas to differentiate yourself from the competition.

Through the many case studies in this book, Thom Winninger shows us how we can create value for our customers and clients. The bottom line is that he teaches us how to get our customers/clients to focus on what we can deliver rather than what we charge. I found this book easy to read, easy to understand and entertaining. The case studies (short and to the point) create examples that apply to just about every type of business.

                          Book Description

The first half of this book explains how globalization and information technologies have shaped the New Economy, and how knowledge has become its key input. The second half explains how and why the public sector should restructure its operations, embrace information technologies, and improve the quality of public services to attract the knowledge workers driving this New Economy. Our digital age requires new governance strategies.

4 out of 5 stars New Perspectives for Mayors, Governors and Legislators.......2001-04-10

Most of what is written about the new economy focuses on how to become an entrepreneur or to make investments. Government is one way that communities are represented as a stakeholder with businesses. This book provides a solid framework by explaining the differences between new economy and traditional manufacturing and service companies, and outlines some of the current ways that legal jurisdictions are wooing these companies. In doing this, the book nicely summarizes the best books on the subject of the trends involved in the new economy. The book's main weakness is a failure to describe or propose a process for creating a new economy friendly governmental environment. Be sure and bring your magnifying glass, too. Many of the exhibits are extremely hard to read because of the small type used.

The first half of the book is background, and it explores the familiar territory of improved communications, rapidly evolving technology, globalization, and cascades of cost reduction in the context of knowledge-based enterprises. If you are pretty familiar with the new economy, you can skip this material. If you are not, it is a good and accurate summary of current thinking.

The second half of the book is the unique part. It suggests four ways that governments can benefit from the new economy.

                          (1) Make the place where new economy companies will be located more suitable for the needs of their employees.

                          (2) Make government operate along the lines of new economy principles.

                          (3) Focus government spending on areas where it will create a more fertile environment for individuals and companies to prosper in the new economy.

                          (4) Help to coordinate local efforts to create an effective clustering of specialist business activities from education to venture capital to fostering an entrepreneurial environment.

Each section has many examples of what governments have been doing in these areas in the past.

The tendency for most who read this book will be to try to provide some of everything on the list. That's probably not a good idea. A good first step is to spend time with new economy companies to find out what problems they have which government can help overcome. A good second step is to try some low-cost experiments to see what works, and what doesn't. A good third step would be to evaluate the potential benefits and costs of making these changes. I suspect that most governments can get the bulk of potential benefits from doing a small subset of the lists here. And, not all of the important items may be on the list. But this book is certainly a good introduction to some of what governments should be thinking about.

If you are working in a new economy business, you should take some time to acquaint your legislators about the problems and missed opportunities that state and local government present for you now. That communication process is all too often focused solely on taxes and getting rid of excess regulation. But your needs are probably greater elsewhere. Until you share that information, the agenda will be swayed in the wrong direction.

I also think that similar books need to be written for educators, heads of nonprofit enterprises, and those who administer governmental activities.

Done properly, this can be a case of building a bigger and better pie for everyone.

Find better ways to support one another!

                                          5 out of 5 stars HeyMari.......2004-06-03

This book is for those who have a relationship with CHRIST! It's principles which are based on the Word of God are applicable and viable for any who believes that "Jesus is Lord" of their life. If you want to know what God says about stewardship, money & finances, then read this book and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you and guide you. You be the judge. Begin to apply these principles to your life with discipline. You will see a change in your life and outlook.

The back jacket of this book notes that it is "a series of outstanding articles taken from [the author's] newsletters." Leaving aside the issue of whether the individual articles are outstanding (the quality is uneven), the book suffers from a lack of continuity. Worse, it lacks a unifying vision. Saying that one is presenting a Christian Biblical point of view about finances isn't enough. The ideas are all over the place and do not develop from chapter to chapter. The book as a consequence gives the impression of being unfinished.

This is unfortunate. Although there are other, equally Christian, views of finances that do not rest on the author's premises (women are to be submissive financially, e.g.), he had some things to say that made me think, though I ultimately disagreed with many of his conclusions (this is _not_ the reason for the low rating).

For a much deeper look at the wise use of money, I recommend the classic _Your Money or Your Life_ by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robins. It does not have a specifically Christian orientation but it certainly cannot be said to be anti-Christian.

A not-so-well-written book with lots of sound, practical advice about managing and using money wisely. Also gives advice about prioritizing one's life to secure contentment. Aimed at Christians interested in following biblical standards for living, including money management.
