Book Description

This book covers the economic history of Latin America from independence in the 1820s to the present. It stresses the differences between Latin American countries while recognizing the similar external influences to which the region has been subject. Victor Bulmer-Thomas notes the failure of the region to close the gap in living standards between it and the United States and explores the reasons. He also examines the new paradigm taking shape in Latin America since the debt crisis of the 1980s and asks whether this new economic model will be able to bring the growth and equity that the region desperately needs. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Definitely 5 Stars.......2007-06-17

I confirm the five star reviews of this book. This is economic history at its best: lucid and highly informative with well constructed and convincing arguments. Bulmer-Thomas is able to cover two hundred years of the economic history of the entire region, which is no small task. This work cuts no corners; Bulmer-Thomas commands the subject. Any student of Latin America or economic history should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Economic History of Latin America.......2002-02-10

Bulmer-Thomas develops a clear and compelling case for Latin America's failure to achieve high levels of economic growth and equality, illustrating how productivity gains and exports in natural resource sectors were never translated into gains in non-primary product sectors. Along with studies by Coatsworth and Engerman & Sokoloff, this is one of the best sources of economic history for the budding Latin American scholar. A warning, though: this is no light read. A background in economics and several cups of coffee will present an advantage.

5 out of 5 stars The Economic History of Latin America Since Independence.......2001-02-13

Not a single Latin American republic has achieved the status of developed nation after nearly two hundred years from colonial rule. The vast abundance of land, labor and natural resources has not delivered the long-awaited fruits of economic growth and economic development. Victor Bulmer-Thomas provides in this book an excepcionally detailled and balanced account of the factors that affect economic progress until the initial period of implementation of market-oriented reforms. It is in summary, an incomparable source of economic history information for those in love with the Latin American region. For a complete understanding of all the materials contained in the book, certain economic background is advisable.

    Book Description

This fresh, hip title speaks to the most important things that concern a woman AFTER law school-her job, her family, her friends and her shoes. Using an experience to which all women can relate, the book analogizes practicing law to a woman's never-ending search for the perfect pair of shoes. Take an uncensored tour through the underbelly of the legal world with seasoned Sisters as your guides. These ladies of the law blindly plunged into practice, not knowing how to swim with the sharks, let alone retain their femininity. Now these Sisters-all of whom love to complain and give unsolicited advice-finally shed light on the womanly art of the practice of law and ultimately address the question, "is it possible to have it all?" The topics are wide-ranging and as diverse as: -- Picking out the perfect pair of shoes: Using all of your superior female powers and prowess to secure the perfect legal position -- Becoming familiar with the shoe department: Sizing up the cast of characters in your law practice -- The art of maintaining your perfect shoes: From taming the testosterone tyrant to obsessing over food and fat

If only finding the perfect pair of shoes was so simple...

3 out of 5 stars Fluffy fun read but sometimes annoying.......2007-01-10

I thought the book was fun and insightful. I have been practicing law for 8 years and there were a lot of truths and useful insights. However, the "you go girl" phraseology was annoying. There was also a lot of focus on pigging out, which seemed a little odd. Take this book in perspective. The authors clearly all came from the same "big city big firm" experience and that is all that is reflected in the book. Knowing that, it was a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars A funny, comforting read for lawyerchicks-to-be.......2006-04-08

The real-life legal minds behind this book must have had a blast writing it. It's high-energy, hilarious writing that manages to cover any topic about law practice a la femme one could ever contemplate. Though they quickly dismiss it as silly in their own Forward, the authors use a shoe shopping analogy throughout. Pardon the pun, but the analogy seems to fit perfectly every time they use it to begin a new chapter or to describe career paths. I loved the way they create an actual dictionary of acronyms that they use so frequently and cogently that, by the end, you're likely to be tickled, as I was, by the realization that you know exactly what a LASS is, and you are determined to avoid it! Hah, I write this review without the book on-hand because I've already passed it along to my favorite 2L friend, so I can't even recall what "LASS" stands for, yet I reiterate that I will not let it happen to me!

My favorite chapter was one devoted to juggling mommydom and a legal career. I had expected to read more depressing and/or unrealistic information and statistics on the topic, but, instead, found myself feeling pleasantly empowered by the end. If you're a future or newbie lawyer like I am (I'm signed up for stilettos in LA in the fall), then you'd likely enjoy their treatment of this sensitive subject.

As I've already mentioned, I loved the book so much that I've already passed it along to a friend, so when I say I recommend it, I really mean it. It'd be a great law school graduation gift!

1 out of 5 stars One of the authors got fired when her boss read it.......2005-08-17

I wouldn't follow this book's advice if I were you.

1 out of 5 stars Vapid, Vacuous, and Insulting.......2005-06-14

This book should never have been published. From authors who regard children as necessary Upper West Side "accessories" and view solo practitioners as bottom-feeders who interview poorly, these writers flaunt their myopic worldview to--ultimately-- their own embarrassment.

Fortunately they borrowed the conceit for their book from "The Rules" and use a tired, weak metaphor of career choice = the right pair of shoes-- these broad hints let you know right away that the book is without merit. By the time you glance through it you're left with the intellectual equivalent of the dregs at the bottom of a Cosmopolitan glass. This kind of "sisterhood" in the law is not for the attorneys that I consider colleagues, and certainly not for me.

1 out of 5 stars Unfulfilled lawyer gets book deal using her only angle..........2005-02-22

Don't believe the family 5* reviews. I'm a lawyer and read an officemate's copy and I still feel cheated.

This book is a waste of money. The thesis is the classic narcissistic ploy- "have it all without consequence" (that is, while the kids are in daycare and you toil away billing hours on the fast track to divorce and kids with ADHD).

Admitedly I'm a man, but how long until this low-level lawyers admit that the book she's peddling will at best motivate other women to become more like the her (miserable)?

It's pretty clear from her petty "insights" and vapid writing style that Sherman fits the classic "Jill of all trades" mold- mediocre lawyer, mother, and most important, mediocre writer as well.

    Book Description

African trypanosomes are tsetse-transmitted protozoa that inhabit the extracellular compartment of host blood. They cause fatal sleeping sickness in people, and Nagana, a wasting and generally fatal disease, in cattle. While trypanosomes are most common to Africa (about 30% of Africa's cattle graze on the fringe of the tsetse habitat), some species have spread beyond its boarders to Asia, the Middle East and South America.
The African Trypanosomes, volume one of World Class Parasites, is written for researchers, students and scholars who enjoy reading research that has a major impact on human health, or agricultural productivity, and against which we have no satisfactory defense. It is intended to supplement more formal texts that cover taxonomy, life cycles, morphology, vector distribution, symptoms and treatment. It integrates vector, pathogen and host biology and celebrates the diversity of approach that comprises modern parasitological research.

5 out of 5 stars Review by Kinetoplastid Biology and Disease.......2004-05-06

The African Trypanosomes is the first in a series of volumes that is intended to cover those parasites that have a major impact on human health or agricultural productivity in such a way that they supplement standard textbooks with particular reference to parasitological research. This first volume should, therefore, set a standard against which the laudable aims of the series must be judged. First impressions are important and, at first glance, this is an unattractive volume. It has ragged right hand margins, very few words to the line (8-10) and the references are so cramped that they are difficult to locate and read. The Index is spoiled by the fact that about two thirds of all entries are headed Trypanosome... this takes some getting used to. The figures are very sparse and most of them of poor quality. Anyhow one should not judge a book by its cover, what about the content? Here there is real quality. The book starts with a provocative essay by David Molyneux on the failure of science and public health to combat African trypanosomiasis, concerns that are returned to later in the volume. Because of these perceived failures it is important to consider the problems inherent in trypanosome and tsetse fly control and the different kinds of approaches that have been adopted. Some of these are discussed in the chapters on the Programme against African Trypanosomiasis Information System (PAATIS) (M. Gilbert and colleagues), tsetse vector based strategies for control of African trypanosomiasis (S. Askoy) and trypanosomiasis risk assessment taking into account the effects of climate, human population changes (J.J. McDermott and colleagues). Moving from the vector to the parasites themselves, there are chapters on better methods diagnosis (P. Büscher) and the development of chemotherapeutic agents (Richard Seed and David Boykin) and a speculative chapter on vaccination (Samuel Black and colleagues). The host responses are considered in two chapters on the immunobiology of African trypanosomiasis (John Mansfield and colleagues) and the mechanisms of trypanotolerance in cattle (J. Naessens and colleagues). The explosion of investigations at the molecular level are reflected in chapters on endocytosis (Derek Nolan and colleagues), the characterization of the trypanosome genome (John Donelson) and trypanosome factors controlling population size and differentiation (N.B. Murphy and T. Olijhoek). The volume ends with a thought-provoking epilogue by the editors which includes such phrases as '...whether our scientific enterprise is a sham...', '... honest attempt to meet the challenges posed by African trypanosomes, or simply a data collecting exercise that is indifferent to individual suffering.' There are, inevitably, gaps in the coverage, as the editors admit in their epilogue, but my only regret is that there was nothing on disease and pathogenesis, areas in which molecular biology is beginning to provide important clues as to what is happening in humans and animals afflicted by trypanosomiasis.

So, what is the verdict; has this volume achieved its aims? The answer is a resounding yes. Readers will need to consult a standard textbook for background information about trypanosomes and trypanosomiasis and this volume for the complementary information, ideas and insights that lead from the textbook to the primary literature. Anyone who has ever asked the question 'Why are they doing this?' will find some of the answers here. This is a book to be highly recommended for anyone interested in trypanosomiasis or working with trypanosomes even though these two interests are not necessarily the same. Make sure that your laboratory or library has a copy.
F.E.G. Cox, Kinetoplastid Biology and Disease 2003, 2:9

5 out of 5 stars Review from The European Journal of Protistology.......2002-11-22

"...a single-volume source of the current state of knowledge is the most valuable, and a broad range of readers will find here excellent, well-organized information. Especially useful is the coverage of results of the use of molecular biological methods that have substantially increased knowledge about these parasites during recent years. Thirty-nine scientists, most of them recognized as experts on their topics, wrote 12 chapters of this book. The authors not only present excellent reviews of this present knowledge, but also outline open questions and controversial discussions... this book is not just attractive for researchers working on African Trypanosomiasis, it will also be a very useful addition to the protozoological section of a library for other researchers and students." - by G.A. Schaub, Bochum, Germany

      Book Description

Practical and incisive, Reinventing Fundraising rejects the notion that women make unenlightened philanthropists. Shaw and Taylor draw from interviews, focus groups, and discussion with more than 150 women philanthropists and scores of development professionals to identify model programs that focus on women's giving. Besides showing the rich history of American women's philanthropy, the authors outline new program models that organizations can tailor to their own female constituents.

Kerala is more than a tiny, exotic subtropical segment of the world's second most populous country. Over the last several decades, it has undergone an experiment in the use of radical reform as a development strategy. As a result Kerala now has some of the Third World's highest levels of health, education, and social justice.

This comprehensive analysis of Kerala experience focuses on the role that movements for social justice played in the successful struggle to redistribute wealth and power. While it does not idealize the achievements of Kerala, this book underlines some of the positive lessons it offers to other Third World countries struggling for equitable development.

          Book Description

India is the second most populous country in the world and also one of the poorest. From the late 1940s to 1980, India's per capita income grew at an average annual rate of only two percent. Expansionist economic reforms during the 1980s boosted economic growth but also unfortunately resulted in high inflation and a balance of payments crisis. As a consequence, in 1991 the government announced sweeping new changes in economic policies.

Economic Policy Reforms and the Indian Economy evaluates the effects of those changes and identifies areas of the Indian economy still in urgent need of reform. After an overview of Indian economic policies and development since independence, papers focus on the country's fiscal situation, the environment for private economic activity, education, the reservation of certain activities for small-scale industry, and determinants of differentials in rates of growth across the different Indian states. Contributors include respected academic specialists on India and policy reform, high-level Indian administrators, and present and past policymakers.

Studying both macro and micro level data, the book covers such issues as:

                · fiscal stress

                · overall economic growth

                · government allocation to the social sector

                · district-level expenditure

                · quality of health, education and nutrition provided by the government

                  Book Description

A decade after the implementation of the initial wave of economic reforms in India, the process of transforming the country into a fully developed market economy continues. A hallmark of the globalized economy is its ability to sustain competitive efficiency which, in turn, can lead to enhanced growth. This important new book gauges how far India has been successful in achieving this goal by implementing the correct economic reform measures.

There is a severe lack of solid analytical evidence or rigorous scientific studies on the success of India's economic reforms. The expert authors attempt to redress this imbalance with a thorough analysis of key aspects of the state of the Indian economy since 1991. Keeping poverty reduction as the major objective, they comprehensively discuss and identify further reform measures which are vital in the monetary, fiscal and agriculture sectors in order to maintain and improve the momentum of growth. When compared with East Asian countries including China, India's lack-luster growth performance indicates that the task of reform is far from over. The authors argue that India needs to pursue its reform process much more vigorously at both the central and state levels in order to achieve its full growth potential.

Providing a comprehensive assessment of the impact of economic reforms in India, this book will appeal to policymakers, researchers and students with an interest in developing economies. Political scientists as well as economists in the fields of liberalization and international development will also find this an engaging and enlightening volume.

South Asia is a region of contrasts, with impressive technological achievements but also more than 40 percent of the world's poor. These contrasts are evident in the health sector, which demonstrates large variations in health, nutrition, and fertility outcomes. Health Policy Research in South Asia showcases some of the innovative qualitative and quantitative research methodologies being used in South Asia to provide empirical guidance for health sector reform and policy development. The four research areas presented are analysis of inequality, expenditure analysis, private sector analysis, and consumer and provider perspectives. Salient themes emerge from the 12 health policy research activities reviewed and emphasize the importance of strengthening local capacity and building ownership: Governments can and should distribute subsidies in the health sector more efficiently and effectively. The private sector, which dominates service delivery in most of South Asia, requires a different set of public sector policy instruments. Informed consumers/citizens can and should play an important role in influencing health service delivery. Empirical research can and should provide policymakers with some of the tools needed to improve and monitor the performance of the sector. This book will be of interest to health sector policymakers and analysts, to academics and students in public health and health economics, and to anyone with an interest in the impact of health policy on development.

                          Book Description

Debt was an inescapable fact of life in early America. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, its sinfulness was preached by ministers and the right to imprison debtors was unquestioned. By 1800, imprisonment for debt was under attack and insolvency was no longer seen as a moral failure, merely an economic setback. In Republic of Debtors, Bruce H. Mann illuminates this crucial transformation in early American society.

From the wealthy merchant to the backwoods farmer, Mann tells the personal stories of men and women struggling to repay their debts and stay ahead of their creditors. He opens a window onto a society undergoing such fundamental changes as the growth of a commercial economy, the emergence of a consumer marketplace, and a revolution for independence. In addressing debt Americans debated complicated questions of commerce and agriculture, nationalism and federalism, dependence and independence, slavery and freedom. And when numerous prominent men--including the richest man in America and a justice of the Supreme Court--found themselves imprisoned for debt or forced to become fugitives from creditors, their fate altered the political dimensions of debtor relief, leading to the highly controversial Bankruptcy Act of 1800.

Whether a society forgives its debtors is not just a question of law or economics; it goes to the heart of what a society values. In chronicling attitudes toward debt and bankruptcy in early America, Mann explores the very character of American society.

Today the rich can still find ways to get out of the spendthrift debts with trusts, shelters, and bankruptcy, but we have to crack down on the debts that poor people get into like student loans, medical expenses, unemployment and the like.

This book tells us that the elite in the U.S. have always been all in favor of getting out of their own debt while holding the lowborn to the "morality" of insolvency for life.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and Highly Pertinent.......2002-12-15

Bankruptcy is in the air these days, from Enron to overextended former dot-commers. So-called "bankruptcy reform" -- intended to make bankruptcy more difficult and more punitive for debtors -- has been pushed by large creditors for years, and almost passed in the most recent session of Congress.

I'm a first-semester law student. I came to this book with a solid, basic understanding of modern bankruptcy law (gained as a business person and as a legal assistant prior to starting law school). As an undergraduate I took two semesters of legal history, and I have an extensive personal interest in American history.

Despite my background, until I read this book I had no real appreciation of the implications of failing to have an effective bankruptcy law. Focusing primarily on the second half of the eighteenth century (both before and after the American Revolution), Republic of Debtors does an amazing job of showing the social, humanitarian and economic consequences of failing to provide for an orderly discharge of debts in bankruptcy, especially when combined with creditors' remedies such as imprisonment for debt.

I, for one, had never confronted the fact that imprisonment for debt survived so long after the American Revolution, nor did I realize that, aside from some brief experiments, the US did not adopt a set nationwide laws on bankruptcy until the late nineteenth century.

Professor Mann tells the story by drawing on a wide variety of primary materials, including the diaries of imprisoned debtors and documentation of court cases. One particularly interesting chapter deals with the an elaborate form of self-government that evolved within one of the debtor's prisons. As many of those imprisoned were relatively well-educated and had been involved in the movement for independence from England, it was only natural that they would have their own constitution and elected government.

Then, as now, there was a tension between the moral and economic aspects of bankruptcy. On one hand, debtors can be viewed immoral spendthrifts, on the other, as hapless victims of the vicissitudes of a world-wide economy or the bad actions of others. These same tensions underlie the current debate on changes to bankruptcy law, driven by creditors who are seeking a return to a more punitive, moralistic approach to dealing with insolvent creditors.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the modern bankruptcy debate, early American legal history, or social and economic history generally. It is also just a cracking good read.

                          Cheers!
