    Book Description

In the same way that Machiavelli, and Sun Tzu before him, exploded all existing ideas about strategy in The Prince and The Art of War, The Master Strategist cuts across politics, economics and business to set out a new and compelling way to think about strategy for a peaceful, prosperous and more free future.

We stand at a point in history where we can have almost anything we desire. Our ability to compute the underlying equations of everything — our genetic code, the structure of matter, the nature of time and space — promises to enable us to enter a new era of miracles. The ability to create new weapons that can reach any enemy promises to enable us to wage any war. Learning how to harness and direct this capability is now critical if we are to forge a better future.

It is in Man’s nature to dream and aspire and then to endeavour, deceive and fight to achieve his dreams and aspirations. Strategy is merely the word we give to the thought that goes into determining how we will prevail.

Ketan Patel, founder and head of the Strategic Group at Goldman Sachs, meets with leaders in international business, investing and government policy every week. This unique access to people at this level has given him the opportunity of discussing with them some of the most fundamental questions facing us, in particular, the strategies for creating peace, prosperity and freedom.

The Master Strategist explains why our current approaches to strategy are failing to create a world where power, purpose and principle are exercised to produce global peace, prosperity and freedom. It sets out the agenda for a new approach to strategy that will be compelling for strategists from the White House to Wall Street to the streets of London, Tokyo, Shanghai, Mumbai and beyond.

    4 out of 5 stars A Commendable Start.......2007-02-22

This is a commendable start to a discussion that is long overdue. Why are inhabitants of this planet failing so miserably to develop themselves -- and improve conditions on the planet? Most of us should be able to step back and develop a comprehensive plan for going forward. Instead, we remain trapped in institutions that are ineffective and downright dangerous. As the author points out, all of our dominant institutions have failed to deliver the goods.

I rated the book at 4 stars because I thought that there could have been fewer lists and more detail on how we develop the power to implement strategy that is effective. (Is this power to be achieved by starting up a new investment management firm as the author has done?)

One of the keys to making a strategic shift is likely found in the background and interests of the author himself. He draws inspiration from both Eastern and Western traditions and has, through his work, been exposed to a diverse range of cultures around the world.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all Strategy evangelists!.......2006-11-22

As a keen student of Strategy, I found this book in amazing clarity in thoughts and flow. No book had such impact over me after the great article by Michael E.Porter (HBR 1996) - What is Strategy?. That article had broken the myth of Operation Effectiveness being portrayed as strategy.

This book goes beyond C.K.Prahalad with his BOP concept and Prof. Stuart L.Hart (Award winning Article: "Strategies for sustainable World" & Book: "Capitalism at the Crossroads: The Unlimited Business Opportunities in Solving the World's Most Difficult Problems") to introduce strategies that could help us look at the World differently - both as opportunity and threat.

It is a must read for people looking beyond their four walls. All Strategy evangelists must read this book before they preach.

5 out of 5 stars Hats off to Master Strategist!.......2006-11-22

Never since Charles Dickens did in his book "Tale of two cities" with his famous words - "Best of time, worst of times", there was such a convincing depiction of extremes of the today's World. The author has captured these dilemmas in a simplistic manner with examples and methodically tried to solve the big puzzle. Hats off to Master Strategist!

4 out of 5 stars Philosophy of strategy.......2005-11-24

This is a book on the philosophy of strategy. If you're looking for a book on strat frameworks, then you're looking in the wrong place. But if you want to understand what makes a great strategist in life and business, then this book is for you.

1 out of 5 stars The worst book even read.......2005-10-10

This is the worst book I have ever read. The author has no idea what he wants to convey or achieve through this book. It looks like the author is writing a gap analysis in a consulting overdrive.
Anyone reading 'economist' for a year will have better grasp of the topics he is discussing in this book. Pure waste of money, time and energy!!

    The book is rated 'F'.

If you like reading about conspiracies, you'll love to hear about the plot to overthrow FDR. You can find it in Jules Archer's book The Plot to Seize the White House.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting read.......2005-11-28

I picked this book up at the book kiosk in South Station in Boston before taking the 2 hour train ride home. I managed to get it the day before it officially came out, totally by accident...

It seperates popular theories by catagory, sums up the theory, spills the facts, and then either agrees, debunks, or leaves you to your own conclusions.

I would say it debunks more than anything else, this read is more for a skeptic (I consider myself one but I picked up the book ready for anything)

This deals mostly with conspiracies involving the United States government past & present, although there are international topics as well as religion & UFOs towards the end.

    A good train read.

Although the author claims in the forward that he is merely relaying these conspiracies and has no opinion, his extremely biased opinion is starkly apparent throughout. Additionally, some of the accounts are relayed using blanket statements without a source or explanation as to how the conclusion was arrived at. If a particular conspiracy did not fit the political views of the writer, it was vehemently attacked. If it did, many crucial points were glossed over. According to this book, the CIA, FBI, and the Mafia, have been the root of all evil during the 20th Century

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating, if not a bit Misleading.......2006-01-01

I say misleading because of the title, "Conspiracies & Conspiracy Theories." Many of the entries in this book don't explain why they are considered conspiracies, but instead talk about how they are in fact interesting.
Other than that, this is one of the most interesting books I have read in a very long while. Of course, it covers all the biggest theories: JFK assassination, alien abuctions, and the Holocaust denial, to name a few. But it also covers a huge range of topics, from secret government operations, to entire countries and everything in between.
This is a intriguing book for everyone, the conspiracy theorists, the non-believers, and the people who just like to read about weird stuff. Only the thickest of skeptics would read this book and not raise an eyebrow or two.

Fran Tarkenton couldn't have made his fortune by following the advice in this book. This book fails to provide any insights into developing a successful business. Rather this books provides a few cute folksy stories about a good old boy (Fran Tarkenton). Don't waste your money. (This review relates to the audio version.)

5 out of 5 stars The Missing Piece of the Puzzle.......1997-12-11

I must admit that I was a bit skeptical about buying and reading a book on business by one of my favorite sports figures. Boy am I glad I did! The information and insights presented by the author were a godsend to someone like me who does not have a successful mentor to show me the ropes. Fran Tarkenton explains in a most candid, clear and concise way, the little nuances that often confuse those of us who don't have much hands-on experience in running a business. Anybody trying to start a business, who does'nt read this book because it was written by an ex-football player should have his head examined..

Globally, the Internet is the fastest growing communications platform of all time. At the end of 1994 there were approximately one million total Internet users in the Asia-Pacific region. As Exhibit 1 illustrates, this number grew to over 39 million by the end of 1998. The Yankee Group believes that, despite exponential growth between 1994 and 1998, Internet take-up across the region was actually hampered during this period by a number of regulatory, technological and commercial factors. Yet, when we now examine individual markets across Asia, we find that the trend has begun to change over the past year. Governments are not only deregulating Internet access and services, they are actively supporting the Internet as a central feature of national innovation policies and economic programs. Though few have well-defined national programs in place at this time, many regimes have correctly recognized the potential of the Internet to re-ignite stagnant economies in the wake of the financial crisis and to drive a desired shift in the balance from the agrarian and low-end manufacturing to value-added services and high-end technology-intensive manufacturing services. Recently, talk of the regional financial crisis has been usurped by talk of recovery driven, at least partially, by technology properties and Internet stocks. The Asian economic tide has turned and the new wave has "e" written all over it. Technological advances and new business models promise to surmount the historical hurdles to Internet growth in Asia. For example, the Yankee Group expects that emerging wireless solutions will overcome local access bottlenecks and bring wireless data to some of the most enthusiastic wireless markets in the world. In addition, Internet access devices are becoming more innovative and affordable. Across the Asia-Pacific, firms are readying and launching alternative Internet access products such as set-top boxes, wireless handset browsers and personal digital assistants (PDAs). In this report, the Yankee Group presents their Internet user and Internet subscriber forecasts for the Asia-Pacific region's 15 most important telecommunications markets and discusses the drivers behind the forecasts, as well as the implications. As Exhibit 1 shows, forecast total Internet users in the region is forecasted to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 38.1% between 1994 and 2005 to reach approximately 374.4 million users by year-end 2005.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars revealing and decent.......2006-08-16

Author Gu is a brave fellow. He offers straightfoward info and analysis on what is really inside Chinese business and political world. He is highly critical of the Communist ills that continue to cause hellish problems for China and foreign operations inside. Other than this abusive bureaucratic power, Chinese people are very diligent and creative. But the key is to get rid of the overextended bureaucratic power, as so claims by Gu.

This book is a must read -- it is a rare book that reveals the inner workings of the Chinese bureaucratic system. This new edition is very nice, which is sharply revised and expanded. (Five stars for his new edition)

5 out of 5 stars powerful development lessons .......2006-08-03

Author George Zhibin Gu is a high-profile Chinese journalist whose powerful newspaper pieces are widely read. This book is a must read. The reason for my recommendation is simple: This book summarises the key lessons from a fast-changing China under globalization and capitalism.

These lessons are powerful. First, an open society is a must in order to gain true development. Second, having foreign involvement is a key driving force for China's quick development in this era. Third, a truly meaningful development must depend on individual private initiatives other than government bureaucracy.

This book gives rather straightforward analysis on what is behind China's new development. It gives tremendous information on foreign multinationals and investors doing biz inside. Furthermore, it gives huge info on how this foreign involvement affects China's society, government and economy. In particular, it is extremely open about the ills of the Chinese bureaucracy. To overcome bureaucratic barriers, it emphasizes the need for greater private initiative as well as openness, among other things.

Also, the book talks about the ever-increasing influences of China's surge on global development. It gives very insightful analysis on a changing global production, investment, and trade map, as well as manufacturing and job transfers, among other issues.

The book also offers much practical advice on doing biz in China. Numerous case studies are presented, including both successes and failures.

                    5 out of 5 stars must read.......2006-07-29

This book is for all readers. Not to mention other things, it contains several dozen case studies on global multinationals doing business in China, like Wal-Mart, P&G, Intel, HSBC, Bank of America, Ford, Siemens, BP, Unilever, Sony, GE, GM, Morgan Stanley, and Microsoft. (Amazingly, this revised and updated volume gives most current info on China -- even events happened in May 2006 are contained here.)

It also gives huge info on emerging Chinese multinationals. All the leading Chinese companies such as Haier, Huawei, TCL, Lenovo, China Telecom, Baosteel, China Oil, Sinopec, CNOOC, and Ping An are studied here. Furthermore, comparisons are made between the Chinese companies and their international counterparts. These discussions are straightforward, covering both strengths and weaknesses.

Its scope is rather wide: the author aims to identify key factors behind global development: causes, effects, and consequences. He offers vast info and analysis on a changing global production, investment and trade map, which involves all nations, rich or poor. Interesting comparative studies involve US, Canada, Europe, India, Japan and China. Above all, he pinpoints opportunities and challenges under globalization.

Also it is highly critical of the abusive Chinese bureaucratic power. Gu claims that China's fundamental weakness is with this overextended, self-appointed bureaucratic power. Vast info and facts are presented to support his statement.

He is a high-profile newspaper commentator/consultant that adds much color to his discussions. The book's key strengths come from the fact that the author has vast first-hand experiences, so that he gives countless insider's stories. Its style and presentation is very reader friendly and straightforward, but its analysis is overpowering.

                          Book Description

Business, Government, and Society: The Global Political Economy shows how lobbying, legal action, subsidies, and many other government economic activities work in the United States and, to a lesser degree, in other political systems. It is not a handbook with directions about how to set up a political action committee, bring a lawsuit, or apply for a government subsidy. More fittingly, it aims to inform readers about the reasons firms turn to government as part of the struggle for competitive advantage and how that interplay can affect a company?s welfare, and the welfare of society.
