    Book Description

The dominant role played by the state in the financing, regulation, and provision of primary and secondary education reflects the widely-held belief that education is necessary for personal and societal well-being. The economic organization of education depends on political as well as market mechanisms to resolve issues that arise because of contrasting views on such matters as income inequality, social mobility, and diversity. This book provides the theoretical framework necessary for understanding the political economy of education -- the complex relationship of education, economic growth, and income distribution -- and for formulating effective policies to improve the financing and provision of education. The relatively simple models developed illustrate the use of analytical tools for understanding central policy issues.

After offering a historical overview of the development of public education and a review of current econometric evidence on education, growth, and income distribution, the authors lay the theoretical groundwork for the main body of analysis. First they develop a basic static model of how political decisions determine education spending; then they extend this model dynamically. Applying this framework to a comparison of education financing under different regimes, the authors explore fiscal decentralization; individual choice between public and private schooling, including the use of education vouchers to combine public financing of education with private provision; and the social dimension of education -- its role in state-building, the traditional "melting pot" that promotes cohesion in a culturally diverse society.

        Book Description

Applying practical tools to the volatile process of negotiating
Prognosticators apply Monte Carlo Analysis (MCA) to determine the likelihood and significance of a complete range of future outcomes; Real Options Analysis (ROA) can then be employed to develop pricing structures, or options, for such outcomes. Richard Razgaitis' Dealmaking shows readers how to apply these powerful valuation tools to a variety of business processes, such as pricing, negotiating, or living with a "deal," be it a technology license, and R&D partnership, or an outright sales agreement. Dealmaking distinguishes itself from other negotiating guides not only by treating negotiations as an increasingly common situation, but also by presenting a tool-based approach that creates flexible, practical valuation models. This forward-thinking guide includes a variety of checklists, case studies, and a CD-ROM with the appropriate software.
Richard Razgaitis (Bloomsbury, NJ) is a Managing Director at InteCap, Inc. He has over twenty-five years of experience working with the development, commercialization, and strategic management of technology, seventeen of which have been spent in the commercialization of intellectual property.

1 out of 5 stars Weak Attempt and Misapplied Theories.......2007-01-11

There are only 3 out of 12 pertinent chapters of this book. The other 9 chapters are an extraneous rambling to take up space on paper. The author even goes as far in this irrelevant material to discuss topics such as art collecting. The pertinent chapters are not useful because of misapplied theory. For example, the author does not present the Black-Scholes methodology correctly and improperly defines profitability of an "in-the-money" option. To me this is a marketing ploy through Decisioneering.

I recommend books by Johnathan Mun, Robert Hull, Richard Brealey, and the CBOT.

3 out of 5 stars Not too helpful.......2006-01-11

The title made buying the book interesting, but I was kind of disappointed when I purchased the book. For someone with a good quantitative background or some real experience dealing with real options and monte carlo simulation, this book would prove to be frustrating. It takes shortcuts by using (to the point of promoting) the Crystal Ball software by Decisioneering. Unfortunately, the book doesn't come with a trial software of Crystal Ball like some other real options books, so you only have to rely on the pictures in the book. Aside from this, the discussion of many topics is very watered-down. The author doesn't go in too much depth, and there is not much takeaway from this book. I suggest buying a different book for your needs.

        5 out of 5 stars A Results-Based Approach.......2004-10-06

While preparing for a negotiation the objective is to identify risks and rewards. The point of the negotiation is to capture value while finding terms value-enhancing to all parties.

Richard Razgaitis combines Real Option Analysis and Monte Carlo Analysis to provide practical tools and procedures. Used properly, these models will provide data that will assure quick, predictable and reasonable outcomes.

            Book Description

In a nuanced and fresh account, James Van Hook evaluates the American role in West German recovery and the debates about economic policy within West Germany. He examines the 1948 West German economic reforms that dismantled the Nazi command economy and ushered in the fabled "economic miracle" of the 1950s. By abandoning Nazi era economic controls, the West Germans discarded a pre-1945 economic and industrial culture.

This volume is a major contribution to Hungarian economic history since the middle of the nineteenth century. In this first volume of two on the evolution of that economy, the authors focus on the beginnings of the modern capitalist economy (1848-1914), on economic nationalism (1918-1944) and on the socialist attempt at modernization (1945-1989).

                Book Description

Kornai presents an assessment of Hungary's transition from a socialist to a market economy. In a comprehensive critique of socialist economy reform, Kornai explains how the system's ideological and political attributes deny the idea of "market socialism." Although this reformist socialism ensured Hungary its transition to a market economy, macroeconomic disequalibria and financial crisis posed constant threats. Finally, Kornai provides examples of Hungary's economic stabilization and conditions for its sustainable growth into the present era.

Finding government data on the almost 2,000 U.S. federal government Web sites means knowing which agency will have it available. Using the U.S. Government Manual style, this comprehensive resource is organized by agency and indexed by subject for complete cross-referencing. It also provides new listings of all national parks, federal courts, military libraries, Department of Energy laboratories, Federal Reserve banks, presidential libraries, and Social Security offices. Annotated entries include agency name, URL, function or purpose of selected agencies, and links from agency home pages.

5 out of 5 stars A guide to federal government web sites.......2001-03-13

This 2001/02 edition provides a guide to federal government web sites which will prove an invaluable reference for any seeking departments of the Treasury, Justice, HUD, Defense and more. From parks and preserves to air force libraries, Internet Blue Pages is packed with solid reference details which may change of time, but probably not as quickly as the usual web site reference.

5 out of 5 stars An Extensive Compilation of Government Websites!.......1999-10-20

The size of the United States Government has grown by leaps and bounds since its humble beginning a little over two hundred years ago. The founding fathers of this country probably never envisioned such rapid growth. Many of us living today probably wished it hadn't. Anyway, we must live with it. Fortunately, we can all benefit from our tax money at work by logging onto a number of government Websites and glean from the vast amounts of information available at them.

Laurie Andriot has compiled an extensive number of government Websites in Internet Blue Pages to offer her readers a heavy-hitting source of government resources. Information gleaned from these sites can help readers make better business decisions, assist them in finding employment, make it easier for them to obtain veterans services, help them to keep up on the latest Washington news and lawmaking (and law-breaking), and much more!

Readers will be able to access tons of government policy and regulatory information covering a variety of issues, including health, safety, food, finances, employment, military, transportation, civil rights, the arts and sciences, and social issues that affect our country and our way of living. I was quite surprised to see a Website listed for the RAF Mildenhall Air Force Base located in England. I had visited this base a number of times while serving in the Air Force at another base in this same country!

Andriot offers brief but helpful commentary on many of the sites listed, including the historical background and roles of many government offices and agencies we have heard about and perhaps a few we never knew existed! Readers are encouraged to read through these blue pages to learn more about the government that has pledged to serve our best interests.

Regardless of what your opinion is of the current administration and congressional representation, our government has plenty of useful information available to meet a variety of personal and business needs. One can tell by the size of this book that there is plenty to go around. This book provides a heavy dose of it. It is ideal for people who either want to do business with our government agencies or want to learn how best to keep them off their backs!

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK CUTS RIGHT TO THE CHASE!.......1999-03-31

As an internet neophyte, I'm having some difficulty navigating. It is wonderful to have such a tool as the Internet Blue Pages, which not only gives you all the government web sites, but has a myriad of links to related sites. Buy this book!

                                Book Description

So far, Rachel Soltanoff's instincts had been right. As CEO in this fictional case study, she had successfully navigated TradeRite Software's transition from a news service for stockbrokers to a $70 million provider of shrink-wrapped software geared toward both brokers and the growing day-trader market. Now a well-financed start-up, Stocknet.com, was testing a very competitive product that traders could download directly over the Web. And TradeRite's Web site was nothing more than a collection of elaborate marketing brochures. Rachel knew she needed to start selling over the Web. But the e-commerce consultants she had hired to set up her Web store were behind schedule, and their 21-year-old CEO had just resigned. Her product manager, Lisa Bandini, was working overtime to transform TradeRite's entire product line into Web-aware applications to match Stocknet's, and Rachel had $2.5 million to launch them. But the consultants said it would take $5 million just to rent e-commerce capabilities. Ace sales VP Brian Rockart thought the company had already wasted too much time and money--money from his budget--on its Web site. Marketing VP Rob Collins thought TradeRite should focus on its core stockbroker customers. Chief Technical Officer Joe Martinez doesn't want to go ahead without a pilot project. Should Rachel try to convince Brian, Rob, and the rest of the senior management team that e-commerce is the way to go? Four commentators offer advice.
