Book Description
Like the rest of British North America, the American South was "born capitalist." The slave plantation, then, was essentially a form of business enterprise like any other--indeed, one quite modern and sophisticated for its time. There were initially very few significant differences in business culture between the northern and southern parts of what became the United States. Yet the plantation placed its peculiar stamp on the South, and vice versa, and its path of development diverged increasingly from that of the growing manufacturing belt of the North.
In their essays collected in The South, the Nation, and the World, David Carlton and Peter Coclanis effectively argue that the chronic economic difficulties of the American South cannot simply be explained away as resulting from a distinctive "premodern" business climate, because there was actually very little variation between one region's business climate and another's during the Antebellum period. Instead, it was the collapse of the slave regime in the 1860s that left the South in dire need of economic restructuring, and by Reconstruction the emergent American economy had foreclosed options formerly available to southern enterprise. Forced to play catch-up, southerners have had at best mixed success in the continuing struggle to create an economic life affording stable growth and broad opportunity to all the region's people--and Carlton and Coclanis offer a fascinating illumination of the twists and turns in that economic history.

Customer Reviews:
this glannon series is the best.......2006-01-17
I have found the series of "The Glannon Guide To ... " to be the best supplement. I read the case book, as well as this book, and used info from both to create my outline.
I did read and look at other books, including Glannon E&E, but liked this one. I will say that if you read every page of the E&E, you will probably find at least one similar problem on your final, but it is harder to read, more time consuming, and more expensive. I used the same series for Civ Pro (avoiding E&E) and was happy with my grade.
I pulled a C+ on the midterm without reading this book yet, and after reading this and the casebook, and outlining, I ended up with a B in crim law....and thats good enough for me!

Altamente recomendado.

Customer Reviews:
Could be 5 Stars, if you're a beginner.......2006-08-22
John would be proud to know that I picked up his audio book from the local library, costing me nothing.
This series is clearly designed to help teach the most basic of balance sheet management for those who have not yet figured it out, and sadly there are many. To sum it up for the informed: Asset/Liability management. That is the system. If you are part of the population that is having a tough time with asset/liability management, then this course will likely be a 5-Star course for you, and I recommend it.
His view on mortgage tax deductions is simplistic, incomplete, and wrong. The real opportunity cost of a mortgage is the interest payment minus the tax deduction. That is the net number that must be compared against an investment alternative, and for most people the alternative investment will win, i.e. keep your mortgage. The deduction does matter. His "accountant" must be a real zero if he was unable to respond to John's incorrect view, or perhaps he simply decided he wanted to keep John as a friend/client.
Furthermore, the deduction advantage does decrease with time (i.e. a "seasoned loan"), because as we all know, the payments become increasingly principle. If you have a well seasoned loan, that is the absolute worst time to pay off your mortgage - you've already paid all the interest, and you're not getting it back. You're paying off the "loan," which you've already paid for, and sacrificing the opportunity cost. Very foolish tactic and ill advised.
His views on investing in securities will likely be helpful to many low net worth folks. Realistically, that group does not have access to more sophisticated investing conduits such as alternative investment, structured products, and leverage. Yes, leverage. Sophisticated investors, including institutions, wisely use debt to turbo-charge their returns. They call it "levering-up." It is similar to John's "accelerator margin." As an experienced investor I cringed every time he mispronounced REIT. (It's pronounced with a long E, in a way that rhymes with "beet." No "it" in it.) A very small point, but to the well informed it is a reinforcement of unsophisticated investing advice. Regardless, his advice is likely well-placed for his target audience.
Robert Cuenca, you should be more careful in your vitriolic attacks, for Lawrence is correct. Your first point argues in favor of market timing. Homeowners know that it is not about market timing, rather, time in market. Your disclaimer is downright funny and sloppy, because it is totally inapplicable and unused in the housing market. You are confusing it with the typical disclaimer applied to securities transactions.
Your second point provides a number for interest payments, but you fail to calculate Form A deductions. Convenient for you, but a veiled lie nonetheless. Then you rant about mandatory insurance and property taxes. Property insurance is a market force that is paid by an occupant, whether that occupant is a renter or owner. It has nothing to do with a mortgage. And what on Earth is your point about property taxes? Do you think property taxes are somehow tied to a mortgage? Do they go away without a mortgage? Finally you go after realtors, despite the fact that Cummata endorses their use. What, dare you assert, does a realtor's fee have to do with a mortgage? Really, your axe is not with Lawrence, it is with the concept of private home ownership. You should be more careful and educated, and less bitter.
Only if you want to be a Miser.......2006-05-10
If you want to live like Eboneezer Scrooge, perhaps this is the book for you. However, the author promotes a very miserly approach to creating wealth. Sadly, by the time you have wealth, you'll be too obsessed with not spending 10 cents more for a bag of potato chips in the flavor you really want. The basic financial principles he is teaching are classic Dave Ramsey. While these are great tools to use, I'd recommend buying something by Ramsey or Orman as opposed to this book. Likewise, if you are serious about becoming wealthy, you NEED to read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki. It is a must!
Overall though, I'd have to say that you should stay away from this book unless you absolutely need to count every single penny in your budget.
Good for beginners and risk-averse investors - lacks insight into really BUILDING wealth through real estate.......2005-11-10
The reviewer Robert Cuenca is in fact completely ignorant. We've all been there - opening our mouths because we got excited after reading our first get out of debt book. So much to learn young padawon. There is such a thing as GOOD DEBT. It's what all savvy investors and biz folks use to grow wealth. My friends and I have made millions of dollars starting out small and buying and renting or buying and flipping real estate or doing our own business (taking on debt as leverage). If you don't understand ROI (return on investment) - that's net after ALL costs including rent and INTEREST that you are so scared of... then you are missing wealth building.
Cummata's book is good for discipline in spending and waking people up - I give it 5 stars for that... but he is as well a bit clueless about real estate investing or he doesn't care to write about it. Does he not realize over 80% of the wealthy in this country have a majority of it in real estate? Real estate may only appreciate 6.3% a year, but when you figure in all of the other gains from the huge tax advantages to all of the other perks such as depreciation to name a couple - the actual gains most savvy investors get is well above 20-40% which blows the stock market average of 10.5% away (it's not really 125 as the media reports). You can't live too frugally or what you call the American dream doesn't work since our society currently revolves around consumption. What would happen to all of the jobs in the fields of all of the consumer goods we buy?
For the average risk-averse American, this is a great book, but if everyone followed it - this would not be America. Let's all think in these reviews before we criticize.
Remember - if you think in absolutist terms, then you are always wrong. Life isn't so black and white. When has anyone ever been 100% correct about anything?
I'm eager to review notes I took on Cummuta's course.......2005-05-27
I almost didn't consider a review, but in my online research for info about Mr. John Cummuta, I found this link, and recalled I could submit a review & felt the obligation; I ordered the course he offers, so I am guessing that the audio series here was in the course -or is very similar to it, so my review of his course will give you an idea of how this item is. (I did online research to see what was up with his course and if I should return it & get my money back or keep it.)
Anyhow, some "oldie but goodie" ideas include the simple but reliable adage to NOT be in debt. Mr. Cummuta tells the reader (or listener in my case; I had CD's) early on that you gotta cut up that credit card. He makes his case well, and as a person who has used credit cards successfully for many years, in college and since, I say from experience: He is right. Most of the time, I had not problems with using my credit card, but recently some emergencies have pushed my balance up to about 5,000 dollars, and let me tell you: The interest of about $50.oo per month is eating me up because (as I'm sure you know) you don't pay on the principal owed until AFTER you've paid that interest.
Suffice it to say that he is right. After he makes his case, he casually mentions another wise man, Solomon, the author of Proverbs, whose proverbs caution the reader to NOT be in debt. (Yes, I was surprised to here him quote the Bible, even as a person who believes in it, but he is right, and he is careful to acknowledge that some people might have different religious beliefs. He is careful to not offend the reader, but merely offer this as supplemental info for the curious; He does well here!)
The elimination of credit card debt is not the only thing he has to offer, but there were new things in his packet (which may or may not be in this particular item; I don't know). He lists four (4) different ways to supplement your income, and is careful to admit that these are NOT "get rich quick" methods. The four he lists are: #1, An intro to e-bay and online auctions; #2, buying & renting residential real estate (the "landlord" thing); #3, Creating & marketing information products; and, #4, Online affiliate marketing business (that is, click-able referrers on your website).
Those were a refreshing addition which stimulated my imagination, but the **main** focus he makes is to pay off your debts in a "logical" fashion, prioritizing the "most important" debt first. He shows the reader how you divide the balance by the minimum payment that the creditor sets, and you get this figure for each debt, that tells you which one is a priority. I think that the smaller the balance in comparison to the payment, the easier it is to pay off, and should be prioritized, with the other debts receiving the "minimum monthly" payment. This is "logical" because the "spare cash" you'd have after that debt is paid can go to the other debts.
He also has a laundry list of tips to cut corners, and some of them are good, like getting a used car, which would cost much less yet be still almost as good as a new one. I think (but don't recall) that he advocates using a clothing line instead of a dryer, still a good idea.
One of his strengths is knowing when add-ons to your insurance are good, and makes the case that a higher deductible is not unsafe, because the insurance company would NOT insure you if THEY thought you were a risk, and he suggests you trust the insurance company, as it is comprised of experts. (John surprised me with his attention to detail: He correctly points out that using spare money to pay off debt is better than investing it, due to the comparison between the two interest rates!)
Well, they offered a money back guarantee, and I strained my brain listening to this guy's CD's. He sure can talk, and talk, and talk, and he makes sense, so this item probably isn't bad.
All in all, since I knew some of this stuff and took notes on the rest, I feel that I don't need his course, but he is "old school," and will guide you right if you need to get out of debt. My online research confirms my feelings that he is trustable.
Although I am returning his course to get my money back, I nonetheless recommend it for you because his ethics are HONEST: His methods is based on the premise that you don't get something for nothing. When he suggests that you put your credit card in water, and then freeze it, to eliminate "impulse" usage (except for emergencies), you will know what I mean: If you don't get his book or course and are still in debt, don't blame Gordon Wayne Watts of Lakeland, Florida, USA -because he has told you -as one who has experience in credit cards -both good and bad experiences.
My review is meant to be helpful, and I sign with my real name to show I'm not some paid advertisement hack. Even though I'm returning it, I am VERY grateful that I was able to review it (and take good notes). Since I am eager to pour over my notes, this is a good indication that my "5-star" review is accurate: Yes, I highly recommend the John C. Cummuta courses.
Gordon Wayne Watts, Lakeland, Florida, USA
Excellent common sense about money.......2005-05-23
I was thrilled by this book! It contains all the "common sense" that they don't teach in High School. This is the audio book to give your buddy that can't get ahead, and doesn't know why.
This book is NOT for those that are successful, have money in the bank, or have low debt to begin with. I believe this is why the book has several bad reviews... They were written by CPAs, and this is NOT a book for a CPA.
This is for your friend that says "I'm no good with money", or "I can't seem to save anything", but has no problem paying the satelite/cable bill/car payment.
This is all the stuff your Dad is supposed to tell you when you get out of high school.
