      Book Description

The Money Lawyers memorably describes how lawyering has become a money-driven business rather than a profession. It explores the lucrative world of class-action litigation, where plaintiff lawyersThe Class-Action Clubgarner billions of dollars through suits against manufacturers of items such as breast implants, asbestos, diet pills, and tobacco. Also featured: the new superlawyer David Boies of IBM/Florida vote fame; the Washington lawyer-lobbyist Tom Boggs; and the messy divorce of securities strike-suit lawyers William Lerach of San Diego and Melvyn Weiss of New York. The dark side of white shoe law is detailed in an account of how a Wall Street firm cast out partners so that survivors could make more money, and the price the firm paid for its blatant disloyalty. Here is a startling exploration of lawyers and law firms today.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting and thought-provoking, but needs editing.......2006-08-15

I liked this book a lot. It covers a variety of lawyers and law firms to give the reader a representative view of various law practices with seemingly questionable morals or ethical practices. It runs the full gamut, from Plaintiffs lawyers dealing with diet pills and breast implants, to securities class-action litigation, to lobbying, to white shoe law firms and David Boies. All these different lawyers are used to show much of what is wrong with many of the major players in the legal system today.
On another note, this book appears to have been very poorly edited. Typos abound, and transitions are done very poorly. Goulden jumps around between lawyers and topics, and does not stay very focused at times. The book also should have been a bit more comprehensive, e.g. discuss what's right with the legal system, problems with conservative jurists and lawyers, etc. But on the whole, I liked it.

3 out of 5 stars So, So - No Great Insights!.......2006-05-31

Goulden points out that a 2003 Manhattan Institute study concluded that litigation settlements exceeded $200 billion/year, about 2% of GNP, and far more than any other country. (Eg. Dow Chemical sets aside $1 in 160 for litigation in the U.S., $1 in $40,000 in Europe.) Lawyers get about $40 billion of this.

Two questions immediately come to my mind: 1)Is this true? The current administration has made great claims on the costs of malpractice suits on medical costs - more objective sources, however, dispute those findings. 2)Do malpractice lawsuits serve a valuable need? Repeated studies have found enormous amounts of error in healthcare - neither laws nor economic incentives to-date have helped. In fact, economic incentives are a large part of the problem - the more errors, the more revenues and profits! However, rising malpractice costs persuaded anesthesiologists to substantially improve their practice - clearly a benefit.

Regardless, "The Money Lawyers" then goes on to cover several leaders in the field, starting with David Boies, of Microsoft and the 2000 Presidential election fame. His background, early cases (eg. defending CBS against General Westmoreland in a slander suit, defending IBM against monopoly charges), case selection logic, and questioning approach are summarized for readers.

Another titan covered is Thomas Hale Boggs - leading lawyer lobbyist - his firm representing 225 or so entities and collecting more in fees than any other lawyer lobbyist firm in '04. Particular strengths include free trade, Alaskan oil drilling, finding federal funding for eg. universities and Iraq reconstruction firms. Boggs' start was undoubtedly helped by being the son of the Democratic House majority leader, and he prides himself on having a bipartisan staff with expertise in a wide range of areas.

5 out of 5 stars Must reading for law students.......2006-03-19

Joseph Goulden's latest book should be required reading for every law student. It might make them stop and think: "What am I going to do when I get admitted to the bar? Become a 'money lawyer' or be able to look myself in the mirror every morning and look my kids in their eyes when I tuck them in?" Based on extensive research and hundreds of interviews, Goulden's portraits of America's most powerful "money lawyers" are not pretty. The billion-dollar industry of class action lawsuits is described in all its greed. A Hollywood film based on his fascinating account and detailed analysis of the silicone breast implants class action cases would make "A Civil Action" look like a kindergarten sand-box squabble. "The Money Lawyers" is an eye-opening book for anyone interested in the law, and especially for those concerned about the future of the American legal system. And in conclusion, Goulden, offers some sound suggestions on what to do about rampant abuses.

1 out of 5 stars Another Million Little Pieces.......2006-02-18

Doctoring the facts must be good business. Joseph Goulden appears to be the latest author to fall victim to the temptation of letting his own preconceived story override both the truth and logic. In this case, Goulden proudly trumpets his own moral character and purported research skills while fumbling badly with even the most simple concepts of the law and legal practice. The books most documented (and best written) facts are those taken directly from the New York Times or Wall Street Journal -- although Goulden often confuses editorials with news reports. From there, however, the book generally rambles through anecdotal stories or imaginary meetings or phone calls that Goulden supposes took place. When it comes to most sordid details, there's obviously a reason why books like this fail to document any sources.

You might be able to overlook all of these failures if, at least, the sordid details were interesting. Unfortunately, they're not. If this was meant to be fiction, it's a dull and poorly written story that certainly isn't going to be a threat to the Grisham or Turows of the world. If actually intended as fact, it's still dull and poorly written and Goulden has much to learn about the most basic aspects of primary research and accuracy (or at least consistency when you're inaccurate).

              Book Description

This publication is based on the plant processes and reaction sites for which reliable knowledge on both their physiology and biochem-istry and the mode of herbicidal action is available. Targets of the agrochemical research, such as enzymes of biosynthetic pathways or herbicide-binding peptides in the photosynthetic membrane, are highlighted. Detailed knowledge about the target sites will allow bio-chemical model systems to evaluate the biological activity of newly synthesized compounds before their conventional screening in the greenhouse. Quantitative structure/activity relationships should be performed more reliably with simple biological species or enzymol-ogy assays, to aid in the rational design of pesticides. This text is highly valuable for plant physiologists, pathologists, and chemists in the agrochemical industry and universities.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand.......2007-03-09

These books makes learning Small Business Server 2003 easy and fun. I have now finished the Best Practices book, and am on my way thru the Consulting book. Both are excellent resources! I highly recommend this kit for all beginning SBSers. Plus you get a cool pin and a bumper sticker. The only downfall is the version of SBS that comes with it is the standard ed, and an evaluation version (meaning limited update features). As such I could not make it work with my vista machine. That was the only disappointment. This is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book .......2005-10-14

My company wanted to switch from a peer to peer network to a windows server and this was unfamiliar ground to me. I found this book to be very easy to read. Did a good job of walking me through each of the steps in setting up a small business server. The extra book on consulting was not worth looking at just yet. Was nice to see that they threw in the server trial cd's.

5 out of 5 stars This kit Rocks!.......2005-08-23

I have been a computer consultant for about 14 years in all now and am just making the switch to Small to Medium sized Businesses (SMB) consulting using Microsoft's Small Business Server (SBS). Harry Brelsford's starter kit is great! I highly recommended it to anyone that is seriously looking to get started in the SMB consulting world. The two books in this set offer a "One-two knockout blow" in the total scope of what is covered. I am taking these books to heart and working through them, word for word, for the first of what will most likely be several passes. Harry has it all here. Throw in the starter software and the discounts to the annual SMB Nation event to be held at the Microsoft campus and you can not possibly loose!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta have it..........2005-03-24

I purchased this SBS2003 Starter Kit last year and I have read both of these books twice and I continue to refer back to them on numerous occations. As a practicing Small Business Consultant specializing in the SBS product, I have found them to be useful and well written. The author is knowledgable about the SBS 2003 product and his "Best Practice" tips are very helpful. This starter kit is a great investment for someone starting out in the IT consulting world and the SMB Nation conference and summit coupons are a bonus. I am planning on using mine to attend the next SMB Nation Summit here in Calgary. I can't wait to get the new Advanced SBS Best Practices... I think these books are a must have for IT consultants who implement, administer and support the SBS product.

This is the most full of S*&T person ever to write a book.
He jumps around from one topic to an other he points you to the web to read things so he will not have to type in in the book I swear that the jerk works for HP as all he states in the book is how great HP items are and that you need to bye them.
This guy sucks He should have taken the time to write about the server and stop talking about HP servers and how he will do a better job next time in his next book that he should have done in this book I will never purchase a book by this person ever again and if given the chance I will write to the Pub. of the book to yell at them to.

Do not waste your money on this item unless you really need a door stop.

Strategy and Enterprise Value in the Relationship Economy Bruce W. Morgan Competitive Survival in Today's Marketplace Requires New Approaches Adapted to New Conditions It means substantially revising many business and investment principles inherited from the industrial age. In the newly emerging service-based, relationship economy, a company's most important resource is its value to shareholders, both internally and in the marketplace. The key to a firm's competing successfully in this new economic environment? Understanding the power and value of its own "relationship capital," and maximizing its potential. But how do you measure the value of your company's experience, creativity, and relationships with customers and employees? In confronting the most significant economic transformation since the Industrial Revolution, what business principles are obsolete and which endure? How do you develop a sound strategic and decision-making approach that lets you play to your strengths as a company? Strategy and Enterprise Value in the Relationship Economy represents a major break-through in providing enterprise managers, investors, and even economists, with answers to these crucial questions. Bruce Morgan's incisive, read-it-now volume articulates a comprehensive relationship-based business theory, pinpoints common misconceptions about today's economic environment, and offers specific, proven measures for linking and enhancing the relationship between shareholders' value and corporate objectives to the utmost. Strategy and Enterprise Value in the Relationship Economy provides the foundation, the blueprint, and the toolkit necessary to construct a value-based decision framework consistent with the relationship-based realities of today's business world.

Ric Edelman believes you can't create a truly effective personal finance plan until you really know what you want out of life. In Discover the Wealth Within You he shows how to develop a realistic series of individualized goals for your future, and then how to construct an investment program to help you realize them. Edelman, author of New York Times bestsellers Ordinary People, Extraordinary Wealth and The Truth About Money, draws on these books to explain why we're ultimately more successful with our financial agenda when we focus on it as a means to an array of unambiguous objectives (such as "see an event in person during the next Winter Olympics" or "have plastic surgery in three years") rather than vague long-range aspirations (like saving "for retirement" or to "buy a house"). In the first section he unveils a step-by-step process for determining the precise objectives that motivate us; in the second he points us toward a mutual-fund-based savings plan that should be easier to capitalize consistently because we know where it's taking us and when we'll get there. Incorporating a profusion of appropriate cartoon strips, inspirational testimonials, persuasive statistics, and an unusual assembly of footnotes that are as amusing as they are informative, Edelman offers a clear and innovative course of action that could turn even procrastinating wannabes into enthusiastic money managers. --Howard Rothman

3 out of 5 stars How To Be Healthy, Wealthy, & Wise the Fun Way........2005-06-22

This is an interactive how-to book fulled with relevant comic strips and cartoons -- a very graphic publication. In it, he promotes reverse psychology to get what you want; my sister mastered in this type of child rearing which I could never learn.

This book is about setting goals, not just realistic, but real. Make this goal as though you were living it today. Visualize. By doing this, your enthusiasm will rise, your focus will intensify, and you'll be able to stick to your goal. Nothing is impossible. Sure enough, one day, you will make it happen, because you'll have made it important to you, vitally important.

After you set your goal, you have to plan how to achieve it. Too many retired people are so focused on maintaining a living that they sometimes forget to have a life, and become 'bored to tears!'

Lincoln said: "And in the end it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." He gives several "what-if" and "if-only" scenarios.

Whatever you choose, however you go about achieving your goals, the main end result is to be happy along the way and when you reach your destination. We may not get what we want when we want it. I was told by a stranger some years ago that God does not work on our time, but He has a plan for each of us in His own time. I'd really love to go to South America to see their pyramids. John Greenleaf Whittier said, "For all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are those "It might have been."

He tells us that "Bill Gates is rich because he own a whole lot of Microsoft, the software company he started. He's the richest person in America, perhaps the world." Part II shows you how to have your cake and eat it, too: take your choice, pound cake is fixed income investments and stocks; marble cake is filled with both. Cupcakes are fads. Avoid them.

Learn to be yielding, and that way, you'll exercise your strength. It sounds contradictory, but it's not. Many ancient cultures consider water the strongest substance on earth because it acts with gentle persistence rather than brute strength, and in that way manages to shape its circumstances without
destroying what lies in its path. Maybe there's a lesson you could learn from that and apply to your own life.

2 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2005-06-19

I picked this book up at a dollar store so I guess I got my moneys worth . this book gives very little info compared to it's size. It does have some useful info on the morning star ratings and Bata.
For me it seems to give a lot of info what people do wrong but not How to do it right.

3 out of 5 stars Two unrelated themes, one decent book.......2004-12-19

This is a decent book, if (a)you want a very interesting guide to goal setting, and (b) you want to learn about mutual funds, and the ideas involved in modern portfolio allocation. So in one way, it is two books in one. The two however, are NOT related in a real way. While some of the advertising and blurbs for this book make it sould like the investing section will in some way help you to more rapidly reach the goals you set in the front "goal setting" section, this is almost certainly not going to happen. The mutual fund, and the "modern portfolio allocation" are not radical way to improve returns. If you follow the advice of this book, you will (a) do about as well as most any disciplined investor, and (b) protect yourself from possibility of massive loss in the type of market we have just been through. You will probably not be touring the world on a sailboat, operating a first class horse farm, or living in luxury in Europe, which are type of goals Mr. Edelman encourages the reader to engage in at the front of the book. So my only complaint would be that the book promises much more than it returns. But if you read each half of the book, as clearly NOT related to the other half, it is a useful tool, in particular the thoughts on portfolio allocation, and the links near the end. It is clearly written and easy to understand in most ways.

3 out of 5 stars An easy (and funny?) book on personal finance.......2004-03-16

This is a book for personal finance. But it only concentrate on 2 main topics - setting up goals and picking up mutual funds. On goal setting, it is one of a few books that give such an emphasis (and proportion) on this topic. It is important, critical, but somewhat over-long. (Imagine listing several pages of places/events that help you to pick up for your goal?) The good side is that the importance of goal setting is applicable is many other areas - not just personal finance. The second half of the book is about mutual funds, and there are some very interesting 'facts' - e.g. Morning Star ratings, index fund, tax benefit, etc. Since the author is quite humorous, it is a very easy read for the 300+ pages. One thing I only like is that some of the footnotes are totally pointless - they are there just for the sake of being funny?? Maybe Ric can consider 2 labelling of footnotes - one is useful and the other is only joke.

5 out of 5 stars Truth, honesty and Integrity.......2004-01-18

These are the three values that come to mind when I think of Ric Edelman. There are many financial books out there and advisors eager to take your money, but how many can you trust?

Edelman was named the #1 financial advisor by Research magazine for his focus on the individual client. He has earned three Awards of Excellence by Royal Alliance Associates, was named Ace Advisor of the Year by Ticker Magazine, named Financial Planner of the Year three times by World Invest Magazine and named one of the D.C. areas top financial professionals by Washingtonian magazine.

His firm Edelman Financial Services Inc., has won more than 50 professional, business, community service and philantropic awards, was named three times by Inc. magazine as the largest growing privately owned financial company in the nation. awards and has been ranked twice by Bloomberg Wealth Manager as one of the largest independent financial planning and investment management firms in the nation (his firm ranks 6th in the nation). The firm has created and implemented financial plans for more than 6,500 clients, and today Ric and his team manage $2 billion for people across the country.

His classic book The Truth About Money was named book of the year by Small Press magazine and his five books have collectively sold over a million copies.

Ric has also earned several financial designations, CFS, RFC, CMFC, CRC, and QFC.

Finally the man has three important qualifications: Truth, Honesty and Integrity.

Ric Edelman is not a "me-too" financial author. He stands alone. In the opinion of many, he is the best.
