Book Description
In his diverse, exciting, and very active forty-five-year legal career, spent mainly in the world of professional sports, attorney Robert O. Swados has worn many hatsowner, league executive, counsel, and franchise builder. In this wide-ranging and good-humored memoir, Swados offers many behind-the-scenes insights into the players, coaches, executives, and owners who have created today's sports entertainment industry. Swados describes his early involvement in professional sports through his efforts in the 1960s to bring a Major League Baseball franchise to his hometown of Buffalo, NY. The deal was so close that a New York Daily News headline announced (Swados still owns a copy) that new franchises would go to San Diego and Buffalo. But things really got interesting when in 1969 Swados helped Seymour Knox III and Northrup Knox to establish the Buffalo Sabres. Thus began an exciting thirty-year journey through the ups and downs of the National Hockey League. As part owner, vice chairman, and counsel of the Sabres, Swados has had many opportunities to "score from the crease," and sometimes the action behind the scenes is just as rough and tumble as that on the ice. He tells many fascinating tales about his dealings with winning coaches including Scotty Bowman, with General Managers Punch Imlach and John Muckler, with owner John Mcmullen, and Commissioners John Ziegler and Gary Bettman, among others. He also talks frankly about the impact of Adelphia's bankruptcy on the fate of the Sabres and about the obsessions and frustrations of the 2004 NHL lockout. Perhaps no one in professional sports has had such an engaging and productive view.
For hockey fans in the U.S. and Canada, especially Buffalo Sabres fans, and anyone interested in the business of bigtime sports, Robert Swados's entertaining and informative story is a must read.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable and informative reading.......2006-06-20
I loved this book. It was not only entertaining, but it gave a lot of insight into the workings of the legal field in pro sports as well as television and entertainment. I found myself thinking "I'd forgotten all about that" or "Is that how that came about?", and the hockey names from the past that I'd long since forgotten were brought back to the present by the writing of Mr. Swados. This was well worth the time it took to read it!
A strong memoir of his encounters with coaches, players, and owners alike.......2006-03-05
Hockey fans who are avid followers of the sport will surely recognize the name of Robert O. Swados, who has been a league owner, executive, and franchise builder in the professional hockey world for over forth years. Counsel In The Grease: A Big League Player In The Hockey Wars provides a strong memoir of his encounters with coaches, players, and owners alike, describing the many changes he's observed in the sport since his initial involvement in the 1960s, and his up and down years with the National Hockey League. A lively set of insights on the sports world as a whole makes Counsel In The Grease a highly recommended pick indeed.
Where'sThe Fact Checker???.......2006-02-27
Good grief Robert, who was your fact checker?? Understandably this book was written by an aging old employee of the Sabres so a pass is given to him on his recollection of facts but GEEZ somebody at the publishing company should have checked this over before releasing this. Where do I begin? OK, Joe Daley was NOT traded for Roger Crozier...that was Tom Webster, Pat Lafontaine did not suffer his concussion against the Bruins, it was the Penguins, the Atlanta Flames entered the NHL in 1972 not 1974, the Capitals entered in 1974 not 1972, Floyd Smith was not the coach when Tony McKegney was drafted, Swados says he attended a game at the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton in 1981 and then in the next paragraph he says the building didn't exist in the early 1990's, which is it? Gil Perreault was not drafted in the Fall of 1969, Willie O'Ree was long out of the NHL (1960-61) when the Knox's had Oakland Seals ties, the Sabres did not play their first game in 1969, Dave Forman died in 1987 so how did you call him and ask for advice in the 1990's? Facts like this should have been checked by SOMEBODY! All this and I'm only half way through the book. I'm all for telling the TRUE story of the Buffalo Sabres but find somebody who knows what's going on. What's Paul Weiland doing these days? John B.

From the author: Estimates of incidental marine mammal, sea turtle, and seabird mortality in the California drift gillnet fishery for broadbill swordfish, Xiphias gladius, and common thresher shark, Alopias vulpinus, are summarized for the 7-year period, 1996 to 2002. Fishery observer coverage was 19% over the period (3,369 days observed/17,649 days fished). An experiment to test the effectiveness of acoustic pingers on reducing marine mammal entanglements in this fishery began in 1996 and resulted in statistically significant reductions in marine mammal bycatch. The mast commonly entangled marine mammal species were the short-beaked common dolphin, Delphinus delphis; California sea lion, Zalophus californianus; and northern right whale dolphin, Lissodelphis borealis. Estimated mortality by species (CV and observed mortality in parentheses) from 1996 to 2002 is 861 (0.11, 133) short-beaked common dolphins; 553 (0.16, 103) California sea lions; 151 (0.25, 31) northern right whale dolphins; 150 (0.21, 27) northern elephant seals, Mirounga angustirostris; 54 (0.41, 10) long-beaked common dolphins, Delphinus capensis; 44 (0.53, 6) Dali's porpoise, Phocoenoides dalli; 19 (0.60, 5) Risso's dolphins, Grampus griseus; 11 (0.71, 2) gray whales, Eschrichtius robustus; 7 (0.83, 2) sperm whales, Physeter macrocephalus; 7 (0.96, 1) short-finned pilot whales, Globicephala macrorhychus; 12 (1.06, 1) minke whales, Balaenoptera acutorostrata; 5 (1.05, 1) fin whales, Balaenoptera physalus; 11 (0.68, 2) unidentified pinnipeds; 33 (0.52, 4) leatherback turtles, Dermochelys coriacea; 18 (0.57, 3) loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta; 13 (0.73, 3) northern fulmars, Fulmarus glacialis; and 6 (0.86, 2) unidentified birds.

unless your donald trump.......2006-10-11
i wouldn't waste your money on this book. The only way i can describe it is useless. Unless you plan on starting a donald trump sized electrical business with 500 employees. This book is all about running a huge business and has about one reference to the electrical field in it. Anyone starting an electrical contracting business isn't gonna start anywhere within the scope of this book.

Customer Reviews:
learning easy.......2002-01-14
Laura Lemay's book,Creating a Commercial Web Page is good for starters and corporate business' interested in learning the basics and creating new ideas for web pages. As a beginner the set-up presents simple instructions and helpful tips to continue changing web page from time to time.
Save your money.......1999-10-08
This book contains information that was probably more relevant when it was first written. Most is passe by today's standards. The links referenced in the book for the support site, and that for a shopping cart are both dead.
Lots of Tips.......1999-02-12
Gosh! I found this book useful and am amazed at the flames of other readers. I found information here that none of the other (Que, Sams, Wrox, etc.) books had. For example: Mailto, Submit-it. In this it solved some problems for commercial pages I had developed that I could not (repeate could not) find in any other book (or even the news groups). The only reason I graded it down was due to the organization. There I do agree with the other readers. It would seem that this book was rushed out the door to print.
Can some one say crap?.......1998-10-28
Save your money for steroids. This book will make you angry at the fact that people try to pass of such crap for high prices.
Piece of trash.......1998-07-21
It wasted me 40 dollars to buy this useless piece of trash. Disorganized, never could follow examples ( exceptd you already know the stuff well, but then you don't need this trash). Don't buy!

Customer Reviews:
Useful, easy read but didn't apply to me.......2004-03-09
I love Mary Hunt's Debt Proof Your Marriage. So I thought this would be great too. However, I already know how to make crafty things and create gift baskets. I know how to shop day-after sales. My Christmas ornaments have been slowly collected. Many issues she deals with seem to be those who regularly go out and buy total house decorations every year--I don't. I expected better suggestions than shop all year, make homemade gifts, etc. I did really enjoy the chapter where she suggests funding sources for your Christmas fund. She had great ideas I never dreamed of--that made the book worth it to me. It's a good book that was useful but just disappointing in some areas.
Another good book from Mary!!.......2002-07-25
Get this book!!! I've already started rereading this book in preparation for the upcoming holidays. Since money's going to be tight this year, I've already gotten ideas from this book and started getting things ready. If you ever thought Christmas was too commercialized and want to downsize, read this book!!! It's done wonders for my attitude - and my budget, for that matter.
Easy to read, easy to apply...........1998-10-15
Mary Hunt, editor and publisher of The Cheapskate Monthly newsletter, has taken up the challenge of helping her readers find ways to celebrate the holidays without facing the New Year strapped with unnecessary consumer-related debt. Hunt takes her readers through a step-by-step plan for a debt-free holiday season. By examining personal values and attitudes, she enables us to identify what we really want from the holidays. In her own words, she wants to help us celebrate "Christmas by choice, not by chance." Included are numerous practical ideas for saving money at the holidays on everything from food to gifts to family fun to decorations. Whether you're just looking for further frugal ideas for the upcoming holiday season, or you're truly dreading another after-holidays debt hang-over, "Debt-Proof Your Holidays" will be beneficial to read. So put away your credit card and prepare to have the happiest holiday ever!
Fabulous!.......1997-10-09
A delightful and practical resource. After reading this little gem straight through in one evening I am so motivated and inspired to change the way I've always "done" Christmas in the past--with a stack of credit cards. This book is packed with hundreds of reasonable and do-able alternatives to creating holiday debt. What a gift!
