Book Description
There are few people better qualified to write on welfare than Frank Field. He has studied the issue for many years, and served as minister for Welfare Reform after the 1997 election. He brings both practical experience and historical perspective to bear on the problem. In this collection of essays he argues that we cannot continue as we are. The rights-based, centrally-funded, government-controlled welfare state we now operate is expensive, unresponsive, and the cause of what Frank Field describes as "a form of permanent serfdom." In spite of this, New Labour remains wedded to the "ration-book" model, appropriate for the post-war years when our present system was being set up, but out of touch with the modern world of increased consumer choice.
Frank Field describes the present policies as "the last throw in politics of central control." In the brilliant essay which gives this book its title, Frank Field compares Lloyd George and Gordon Brown as "titans of welfare reform." Both wanted to assist poor people, but using very different methods. Lloyd George wanted to raise their incomes, but also to make them into independent citizens. He created a floor from which they could rise. Gordon Brown, on the other hand, has raised incomes whilst creating "a degree and intensity of dependency for the working population hitherto unknown." He has created a ceiling which many will never be able to break through.

Customer Reviews:
good content poorly organized.......2007-01-27
Tom Shinder is the recognized non-Microsoft ISA expert. He wrote the seminal (if only) book on ISA 2000 and now has written on ISA 2004. He also runs a companion website.
A good 200+ pages is devoted to marketing rehash and comparison of competing products. While there is some discussion of relevant concepts, most of this would be better served as website content. The competition changes rapidly enough that any such information in print quickly becomes obsolete. This book is supposed to be about configuring ISA 2004, not in-depth reviews of the product space.
The book's presentation quality is poor. Type is uneven in places, page numbers are cut off, and there are spelling errors. The organization is deficient as well. I continually lost my way and had to flip back to the TOC (which at 22 pages is too large to be of much use), Preface, and chapter intros to recapture the author's chain of thoughts. For example, Shinder describes Chapter 4's objective as preparing the infrastructure before installing ISA 2004, yet the chapter is filled with multiple ISA installation/configuration screen prints and instructions. He also describes how the various ISA clients react with particular network configuration, yet he does not introduce the concepts of clients until a later chapter.
The book is redundant in its presentations, as a chapter will begin with an overview of a series of concept, discuss the configuration of each concept, then discuss the various installation and configuration items for each concept, rather than describing the entirety of each concept one by one. There are occasions where he neglects to give context, such that advice seems contradictory. The typical "quick install" section is hidden about 500 pages into the book, and there's duplicate versions.
Despite the previous criticisms, the content of the book is informational and friendly to those new to the product, giving step by step instructions. When one considers the book along with the companion website and the author's personal commitment to assist and provide advice - as well as the lack of other books on the subject - "Configuring ISA Server 2004" gets a high rating. I will be looking for the 2006 update.
Top Notch Reference Material.......2007-01-09
Great reference manual, easy to read, great examples. I use this as a reference book for quick settings changes and deployments. I highly recommend this book.
Definitive Guide for Beginners to ISA.......2006-08-28
I was totally new to ISA and came to know about this book from the ISAServer forum.
It not only gives in-sight into the inner workings of the product but also speaks about the philosophy and history behind the creation of this versatile tool.
Understanding, Installing and Configuring ISA is just a piece of cake with this book
The Best ISA 2004 Reference ever.......2006-07-10
Don't be fooled guys, even with the articles being available online you wont find such a complete explanation posted into the isa server's resource site. This guy writes ISA documentation for MS, so there you go, he is da man when it comes to the product and has been dealing with it since the beginning, ISA 2006 is still in RC and he already wrote a couple of articles regarding how to configure new features. Definitely, a must have if you are an ISA Admin or consultant looking for some information and advice to do the right setup for the given network.
Too Much, Too Soon?.......2006-05-22
Since the early ISA Server 2000 days, author Tom Shinder has been the undisputed king of the ISA Server world. (Small world, isn't it.) His great expertise is complimented by a nice professional writing style that can be understood by any serious system administrator. If ISA is a big part of your responsibilities, you will want to have this book.
However, if you just want to get ISA Server 2004 up and running for the first time, this 1,024-page book is too much. If you are sitting there with the CD in hand and want to be up and running in three or four hours, be aware that the first 300 pages are devoted to a discussion of new features and a lengthy defense and comparison of ISA to the lower-end firewall appliances (non-PC hardware with firmware). This was very interesting reading for me (with four years managing ISA on a small network with ten servers and twenty workstations), but it may be too much too soon if firewalls are not high on your list of interesting things.
I searched hard for other ISA books and bought "ISA Server Unleashed" as well. "Unleashed" is 552 pages and quickly gets to installation and then configuration, exactly what you may want to get up and running quickly. In addition to "Unleashed," there seem to be just two other books that may serve for installation guides. The first is Shinder's "How to Cheat at Installing ISA Server 2004" (according to another reviewer, a "just the facts" version of the larger book reviewed here). Lastly, there is the "Administrator's Pocket Consultant." (I have read only reviews for the "Cheat" and "Consultant" books.)
Don't misunderstand, Shinder covers just about everything before he is done; and if you want your ISA expert's badge, you need to have this big book. I'll use "Unleashed" during installation and use Shinder's book for guidance on best practices.
If your finances suggest just one book, do this big Shinder book if you have prior ISA experience. Otherwise check out the small number of other offerings. And don't forget to search for ISA Server and Shinder on the web. You'll find a website with many long articles by Shinder.
By the way, I share Shinder's view that ISA is a great product. My ISA 200 installation has run robustly for four years; but I was looking to offload to ISA some of the spam filtering burden that now rests on an Exchange Server plus GFI installation and decided to move up to the latest ISA version at the same time.

"Up and Running" is a tremendous tool for the "soon to be" or new chiropractor. Easy to read, honest, and right to the point, this book will take you through the necessary steps of opening a successful chiropractic office. Everything from picking a practice location and negotiating an office lease, to the preparation of office forms and patient management are covered in this very informative book.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive Manual to Start Your Own Profitable Practice .......2007-08-10
Running a chiropractic clinic requires both patient care and business skills. But chiropractic schools have mostly focused on teaching patient care, often neglecting the development of business skills. The graduating doctors then add the stress of unfamiliar practice life to the financial debt accumulated during their college years. Drs. Reizers fill that knowledge gap and extend exceptional-quality advice to doctors that are about to start their own practice.
Chiropractic office requires doctors to make strategic decisions about selecting specialization, clinic location, negotiating a lease, working with insurance companies, leasing or buying equipment, hiring other doctors, addressing specific kinds of patients, marketing, etc. Drs. Reizers' book teaches doctors how to make such decisions in an organized and systematic way, removing anxiety about the unknown and replacing it with solid knowledge earned during years of both running their own practices and teaching at a chiropractic college. Drs. Reizers did a remarkable job of exploring each topic with great detail and meaningful examples.
In summary, a doctor building a profitable chiropractic office must read this book and return to it often for reference.
Must read for any chiropractor or chiropractic student.......2004-04-10
This book is great for helping the chiropractor learn what it takes to be successful in practice. I also think that being really grounded in chiropractic philosophy will help tremendously. I recommend the book "Chiropractic First" to help to really get what chiropratic is all about as far as philosophy, which should help in being successful in practice. Anyway, Up and Running is a great book because it will show you how to stay successful and how to think prosperity and not poverty and gives you tips on success in practice. For chiropractic students taking the boards, study the following books. National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers, National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations. These study guides helped me focus on what was important for the boards exams. It definitely is a must buy because it makes you get used to board type questions--less surprises on the test. Once again Up and Running excellent for showing the chiropractor wanting to open a practice on how to succeed and to never give up.
Simple Advice For New Doctors!.......2003-12-16
This book would be extremely helpful to any chiropractor looking to start a new office. The information contained in the text is practical material that many new chiropractors might not be aware of. I enjoyed the book very much!
very general info.......2003-12-05
The book had a few helpful ideas or approaches to opening a practice, but nothing that you have not already heard. Overall, good info, but very basic.
Chiropractic Thanks You for Writing This Book!.......2002-08-01
"Up and Running, Opening a Chiropractic Office" is a refreshingly simple, straight (chiropractic) and straight-forward handbook for a rather intimidating subject. The Reizers take what many newly-minted chiropractors see as a nearly insurmountable obstacle(opening my own practice!!!)and climb right over it one clearly described step at a time. Easy to read, thorough and candid in its approach, the book nonetheless stays focused on the challenges and joys of opening a subluxation-centered chiropractic practice in a world that sometimes forgets that this is what chiropractic is really all about. I just hope that everyone who has a vision of what his/her own successful chiropractic practice could be like gets his/her hands on this book. Chiropractic thanks you for taking the time to write down your insights and pass on your expertise. But more importantly, the patients who will benefit from the successful chiropractors this book will help create thank you.

Book Description
This book provides the first comprehensive overview of the economic development of Singapore, easily the leading commercial and financial center in Southeast Asia throughout the twentieth century. This development has been based on a strategic location at the crossroads of Asia, a free trade economy, and a dynamic entrepreneurial tradition. Throughout this study Dr. Huff assesses the interaction of government policy and market forces, and places the transformation of the Singaporean economy in the context of both development theory and experience elsewhere in East Asia.

extremely useful discussion of Singapore, pre-1959.......2007-10-10
There are many texts about the development of Singapore from when it achieved self-government in 1959. This book does not try to compete with them. Instead, most of it deals with the period between about 1869, with the opening of the Suez Canal, and 1959. Much of the analysis about the early period contradict popular mythology about Singapore -- the country was not backwards and poor when it became independent; in fact, it had a GDP per capital about 1/3 that of the U.K. This book describes how this came to be the case.
It also discusses the more recent period, but the material there is similar to what is available elsewhere. The five stars I'm giving the book are for the earlier chapters.
I have heard representatives of third world nations describe their development plans as being "Singapore like," meaning that they plan to rocket from poverty into selling intellectual and financial services in a short period of time. I wish more of them understood the special circumstances that allowed Singapore to make the leap, and the length of time that it really took. This book is valuable for anybody considering similar problems.
A well done book.......2001-08-11
A fine book, one that give a rich understanding of what happened and why.
Sure, Lee Kuan-yiow transformed the situation. However, it is easy to overlook that Singapore was more than just a bastion of British might, even usurping the Sumatra rubber burning industry as it was more efficient than the Dutch efforts, despite desires of the Dutch to keep that money maker inside its borders. Therefore Singapore was basing a good part of its well being in the early part of this century upon the lack of industry on the Dutch side, mainly because it was a modern city hub of the region at that time and one that provided stable reinvestment.
Other examples are given, like the industrial machining might developing about 1930 because it was the next logical step.
All that was needed was for multinationals to give them the steady workload as they had already done most of the jobs before (as was the case industrial wise in Japan, Germany, and similar countries after WWII, the people's skill was the primary mover).
It may seem like a small issue, but it destroys the myth of Singapore being a backwater and bodes ill for any country trying to rise up in short order from absolutely nothing (no examples of such, actually, in modern times, though Australia & N.Z. come closest from the periods of 1787-1900 & 1830-1900). It is interesting that in those cases as was similar with Singapore & Hong Kong, migration of an industrious population was the keystone, beyond natural resources.)

a helpful survey of tools, models and strategies.......1997-11-30
Two dramatic statistics point to the World Wide Web as a strategic target for consumer business. First, 29 percent of households with income over $100,000 use the Internet. Second, only 35 percent of American families have personal computers. The growth possibilities simply demand that even non-computer-savvy businesses take a look at what "cyberpower" could do for them. Here are the six online business models as described by the authors: 1) Direct sales, where companies actually sell on the web, using online fulfillment, security, and ordering systems. 2) Subscriptions, where fees are charged for access to information. Fees can be quite low and still be profitable due to the minimal production costs of a product such as a newsletter, for example. 3) Advertising, where ads are placed on websites, such as the ads on the Yahoo search engine. Any site that draws people for one reason may be an advertising opportunity for marketers who want to make customers out of people drawn to the site. 4) Web Services, the moniker for all the occupations of consultant, designers, transaction processing, and other services unique to the World Wide Web. 5) Cost-savings in competition with traditional means of distribution such as snail mail. Federal Express and United Parcel Service use web sites to help customers track packages faster than they would through an 800 phone number. 6) Operation enhancement, through "infomercial" and other types of information provided to customers to enhance their experience with a company. This book is a helpful survey of the tools, models and strategies for Internet business, directed specifically to those with not enough time and prior knowledge to engage in a full-out investigation. Michael Pellecchia
This book's a winner!.......1997-05-12
One of the only books on the market that looks at on-line strategies completely from a business perspective! The book covers using the web, email, newsgroups, and on-line services (to mention a few) in a manner that makes doing business more effectively. It's written from a business person's veiwpoint ... how can I use the internet to enhance my business? Using the web (and internet tools in general) are part of ways we can make doing business easier and less expensive for the client, and increasing revenue or cutting costs at the same time. Bravo gentleman for a great book!

Book Description
Are the combined human resources at STAR CYBERPOWER HOLDINGS LTD. productive? There is no absolute answer to this question. This report considers the extent to which the company's labor deployment indicators differ from global benchmarks. In this report we consider forecasts of differences between labor ratios and the resulting return on this human investment compared to global benchmarks; the estimation of such differences is commonly called a "gap analysis." What is the ratio of short-term and long-term assets to employee? What are typical capital-labor ratios? How different are these ratios to companies serving the same link in the value chain? What are the average sales and net profits per employee compared to global benchmarks? These and over 50 other indicators of labor productivity are considered in this report. The report does so by going beyond traditional analyses by considering companies competing in the same or similar industrial classification at a global level. The goal of this report, therefore, is to assist consultants, human resource managers, strategic planners, and corporate officers in gauging estimates of a company's human resource indicators compared to firms competing or participating in the same economic sector, at the global level. This report is not about whether a particular company or industry has performed well or poorly in the past or will do so in the future. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's human resource indicators against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector, but not necessarily competing directly with the company in local markets. These firms should not be perceived, therefore, to be direct competitors to the company in question, but simply those that have been classified by various sources (e.g. EDGAR or similar foreign filings), as competing to serve customers in the same link of the value chain, or broad industrial classification, as identified by SIC, NAICS or similar codes. Second, given the international nature of the task, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full human resources benchmarks vis-a-vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover labor-asset ratios, labor-liability ratios, and labor-income ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the statistics reported are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 updates are produced each year). Each report provides over 100 statistics and 40 graphs to the reader. This reports is on STAR CYBERPOWER HOLDINGS LTD., WANCHAI, Hong Kong.

This treatise contains the complete text of the important National Bankruptcy Act of 1898 with interpretative annotations. Taken together, they are an important document of the act's initial reception. In these Black [1860-1927] "gives special prominence...to the elucidation of those questions which will probably first come before the courts for settlement--questions, that is, of jurisdiction, of procedure, of the persons and corporations entitled to take advantage of the law, or liable to be proceeded against under it, and in regard to the acts of bankruptcy upon which a petition in involuntary cases may be founded (v). A response to the Panic of 1893, the 1898 act was the first to address the complexity and national scope of modern industrial capitalism.
