This intellectually bold but accessible book seeks to go beyond limitations of the reigning neoclassical and institutional paradigms in explaining the organization of economic activity. It does this by construing "non-economic" factors such as institutions, cultures, and social practices as conventions, which coordinate economic actors by defining specific "frameworks of economic action." In these conventional frameworks, the standard distinction between economic and non-economic no longer exists. The authors explore in detail four basic frameworks--or "possible worlds of production"--which underpin the mobilization of economic resources, the organization of production systems and factor markets, patterns of economic decision making, and forms of profitability. The case studies examine how these possible worlds act to support innovative production complexes in a variety of sectors in several countries.
Storper and Salais show that economic actors coordinate actions with one another and interpret what others are doing in ways that are constructed by convention. The principal challenge to economic policy today, they argue, is to reconcile internally coherent conventions with the external tests of product and financial markets, which tend increasingly to escape jurisdictional borders. There is no single model of growth and efficiency that brings these two sides together around the world today, even in narrowly defined product markets. If policies are to deal effectively with an increasingly unified global system of flows of commodities, money, and people, they must be aware of the diverse, economically viable action frameworks found in different industries, regions, and nations.

DID WHAT HE SAID AND IT WORKED.......2007-08-30
Despite being told many times that I would have a very difficult time getting benefits for psychological issues I followed Mike's book and was awarded full disability without any appeals. He was also kind enough to email me with additional advice while I was going through the process. The total time from the date of my application was 6 months and I used the SSA's own doctors during my review. At the point of application I was nearing eviction with no hope and no way of getting a job based on my past track record and social difficulties. I was able to hang on somehow and was awarded full benefits. The book is short and easy to read and very inexpensive and I urge you to read it thoroughly before you apply. It is the best one available and I researched them all.

DON'T APPLY by yourself WITHOUT THIS BOOK!!.......2007-02-25
If you insist you're going to try this on your own, GET THIS BOOK first, it'll help you save hours of time, and many questions.
I helped a friend apply (so he didn't have to give a CUT to his attorney) by himself, and he was approved in two months time, the FIRST application.
Also, be FOREWARNED that you will get back-pay to the date of whenever the disability started or up to 12 months prior to when you APPLY, the first time. So if you apply in June of '07, you're only getting paid from June of '06. In other words, the longer you putz around, and delay getting started, you are losing money that you can never get back!!
So grab this book, and start before the end of the MONTH!

I highly encourage everyone who is filing for Social Security Disability to order this worthwhile guide. You have too much at stake to not invest a few hours and follow the advice of this book. From a paralegal's perspective, this book will enlighten you as to the procedures that could be detrimental to your case. This is a must have reference guide for disabled individuals of any age.

OVERCOME YOUR "STALLED" THINKING ABOUT E-COMMERCE PROFITS.......2004-09-14
CLIENTES.COM is a very valuable book in that it focuses both on how to serve customers on-line as well as how to make money doing so.
Like a good consultant, the author systematically looks at best practices from each of 16 cases, and combines the lessons into a vision of the future best practice (in 2-3 years) that no one is yet doing. This is an outstanding accomplishment, that is not matched in most best practice books.
I also visited the CUSTOMERS.COM Web site to register for the free booklet that is offered, and was pleased to get many ideas to improve our own electronic commerce. Be sure to check here from time to time, because the author updates the 16 case histories in the book on the Web site so that you can keep up-to-date. That is an especially nice touch.
Ms. Seybold does a nice job in CUSTOMERS.COM of critiquing each case history for ways that organization could improve. Let me do the same for her book. Several things stand out. First, the book does not go into enough detail about how to find the weaknesses in current operations that will permit greater profitability through changed processes facilitated by electronic commerce. There is a lot of best practice work needed in those areas before you start thinking about electronic commerce. Second, she does not address the question of what the ideal best practice of electronic commerce is. You might think of a well-informed concierge in a great hotel who knows you well as the model for this ideal best practice. Third, more needs to be done to help you learn how to facilitate the change process. The steps she describes would be very difficult for many organizations to implement that are beset by severe stalls in the form of tradition, disbelief, misconceptions, bureaucracy, avoiding the unattractive (such as customer problems), procrastination, and miscommunication. Fourth, the book highlights a lot of very interesting case histories and shows their successes. I was struck that although I am a heavy Web user and a substantial customer of many of these organizations, I did not know about the electronic services they offer. It sounds like many of these organizations still have a communications problem with their customers. Fifth, the available technology will advance a lot in the next five years. I felt the book does not do enought to make people aware of how technology that is not yet available can facilitate the future success of their electronic commerce.
No book can serve all needs in an area, so we can look forward to Ms. Seybold's next book. I enjoyed the personal touch as she described her own experiences with many of the companies involved. I hope she keeps in touch with them and us. I suspect she will based on the e-mails I get from her after registering on her site.

Estoy muy sorprendido acerca de como Patricia Seybold ha podido sintetizar de manera tan simple los conceptos básicos para llevar adelante iniciativas de CRM en esta nueva era de interactividad permanente entre una empresa y sus clientes. Lo más valioso del libro: la manera en que cada uno de los factores críticos de éxito en este tipo de iniciativas están asociados a ejemplos muy bien desarrollados y explicados. Para aquellos como yo, interesados en la influencia que internet está teniendo y va a tener sobre la manera de interactuar con sus clientes, este libro es una pieza imperdible.

I was recommended this book by a professional credit counselor. After reading the reviews below, I knew it had a heavilly Christian bias and was prepared for that. However, it is about 90% antecdotes about couples in financial trouble. And in each instance, the couples (and reportedly the author himself) are rescued by a financial miracle after accepting responsibility for their debts and praying. As nice as it would be to rely on that, I was looking for practical advice. It tells you to make a budget, but doesn't tell HOW to make and stick to a budget. There is absolutely nothing in here about how to actually get debt-free and stay that way.
Completely ignoring the heavy religious bias (there's no effort to hide it in the descriptions of the book) I can see one "pro" in this book...the narratives about couples in trouble are a bit hokey, but they do put a mirror up to readers who can see bits of their own habits in at least one of the couples. Facing the bad habits is a starting point. Go somewhere else for practical advice. I for one do not have time to wait for God to tell someone to pay off my student loans and offer me a free place to live!

This book has changed my life! If you are a Christian, it is a must-read as it details what God's blessings will come if you follow His Biblical plan. Well-written and full of real-life examples. Also see companion Budget Workbook by Larry Burkett.

This is a really good book concerning financial issues that face almost everyone.
Larry Burkett's easy-to-read advice is truly a blessing to the Christian community, and I highly recommend it. God does not want our lives to be financially unstable. The different couples in this book and the situations that they suffer through allow the reader to see how finances can spiral out of control.
The advice in this book is solid. It is not a get-out-of-debt-fast magic book. It is a book written by a man who understands the drastic changes in the way society sees debt. We have been bombarded with a "get it with credit if you can't afford it" attitude.
People who truly want to stop accumulating and accepting debt as just a fact of life now have a book to get them started on the road to financial freedom.
Stop the insanity of just paying off one loan with another loan, buy Burkett's book and get started on the road to financial happiness.

Very profitable reading........2005-04-16
I really liked this book. It is a classic book for those who are interested in managing their finances according to Biblical principles, and for those who have landed themselves into debt. Larry Burkett teaches biblical principles of debt-management by telling stories... stories collected over years of counseling thousands of struggling individuals and couples. Some of the previous reviewers have said that these stories are just anecdotal scare-tactics, but the intriguing thing is that I see highly-educated people around me making the same "anecdotal" mistakes with their finances (and reaping the consequences). Americans (in general) have no clue how much house they can afford, etc. and regard debt as a necessary evil... or even as a good thing. This book helps you to see debt in a more balanced light, and is highly recommended to anyone who struggles in this area.
As you can see by some of the other reviews, if you're not a Christian, you'll probably get hung up on some of the biblical principles: such things like keeping your word even when it costs you money, family leadership principles, living within your means, and the husband-wife relationship. So if you're not a Christian, I would suggest taking a serious look at the Bible (by studying what it says) and then compare it to the principles in this book. I think you'll find that the Bible is reliable and timeless in its guidelines for finances just as it is for every other area of life.
