    Book Description

This book makes a novel contribution to the study of citizenship by examining how individuals at the margins of Chinese society deal with state efforts to transform them into model citizens.

Based on extensive original research, it examines how individuals at the margins of Chinese society experienced the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in the late 1990s and early 2000s. This book shows how individuals dealt with state attempts to transform them into model citizens, arguing that social and cultural citizenship has a greater impact on peoples lives than legal, civil and political citizenship. The seven case studies in this book present intimate portraits of the conflicted identities of peasants, criminals, ethnic minorities, the urban poor, rural migrant children in the cities, mainland migrants in Hong Kong and Chinese youth studying abroad as they negotiate the perilous dilemmas presented by globalization and neoliberalism. Although the focus is on marginal groups, the book portrays the nature of citizenship in China overall.

Drawing on a diverse array of theories and methods from anthropology, sociology, education, political science, cultural studies and development studies, Chinese Citizenship presents fresh perspectives and highlights the often devastating consequences that citizenship distinctions can have on Chinese lives.

I found this book to be well documented but it did not cover some issues that I would like to see. The topics in this book do cover the whole criminal justice system vaguely. I would like to see later editions specific to law enforcement and not generalized. I do think that this is a good text but too generalized for my likings.

As socialist states struggle to transform themselves into market economies and the United States privatizes everything from schooling to policing, the current crises in Russia and East Asia suggest that something might be amiss. In the rush to open societies to the benefits of competition, economists have overlooked the fundamental instability of competitive markets. What had seemed to be an invincible capitalist juggernaut may be reaching its apotheosis. A close look at market economies is more timely and crucial than ever. Michael Perelman argues that capitalism's victory is temporary, based as it is on an unrealistic understanding of the system's inherent risks. He analyzes the nature and causes of crisis within a market society, and along the way, he re-examines one of capitalism's most primary and unquestioned tenets, that the more competition there is, the better off society will be.

4 out of 5 stars Some reviewers have completely missed the point.......2001-07-13

I think the point of this book was generally clear enough. Those people above who have criticised Perelman's use of analogy to the biological sciences clearly missed Perelman's view of economic systems. Because humans are biological organisms, and because our economic system is a construct of biological organisms, it stands to reason that it would behave much more like a biological system than anything classical economics could ever hope to describe. In order for Perelman to model his thesis in such a way as to please the economic community (which I believe he noted in an early chapter would turn a deaf ear to his book because of its lack of conventional economic argument and modeling) would have required far more print, to far less effect than Perelman has achieved. In a nutshell, Perelman suggests that economics is complex because human beings are complex, because we have a very wide range of perception, understanding, and experience to inform our economic choices. It is a very big idea. And it really suggests something far broader than any economics we can imagine. In order for this discipline to be valuable, HUMAN DECISION MAKING must be modeled. Artificial intelligence. In different terms, Perelman also suggests that current decision-making structures, because they are so narrow (inhuman) are ineffective at dealing with complex problems. Decision making is intelligence. To understand it is to crack the code of AI. No one has done that yet. Readers should also take a look at Herbert Simon's "Models of Bounded Rationality" and "Complex Information Processing" as well as Fritjof Capra's "Web of Life" for more insight into these issues that will supplant classical economics. I'd give it five stars, but Perelman raises more questions than he answers, so I'll give it four.

BTW, I should note that his explanation for market volatility rests on the premise that decision-making apparati are deficient for these reasons.

1 out of 5 stars Weak Criticism of Competition.......1999-12-22

Though this book presents a few interesting ideas, most of them are confused by far-fetched metaphors and lack of substantial proof. Perelman is clearly interested in making the material accessible, but he does so by using so many different metaphors that it is difficult to figure out exactly what he is trying to say. Though his claims seem to be revolutionary, he touts nothing more than the modern liberal agenda. I happen to agree with his ideas, but the methods he uses to support them are weak and could afford to be better informed by classical theory. If you want a good criticism of modern competition, this is not it. This book ends up being a long justification of an unclear, poorly editted, and weak thesis.

5 out of 5 stars An incisive critique of conventional economic wisdom........1999-08-09

Unlike most conventional economists who assume that the self-equilibrating properties of their models are replicated in the global economy, Michael Perelman demonstrates the inherent instability of unfettered capitalism. Like Thorstein Veblen's "Absentee Ownership", Perelman demonstrates how the lack of intervention and regulation compounds market volatility. It is a lesson not lost on major players such as the World Bank, which speaks of a "crisis of state effectiveness" and recognizes the damage caused by speculative whim. Perelman's characterization of markets as inherently unstable garners support, however unintentional, from no less a source than US Treasury Secretary, Larry Summers, whose recent pronouncements have focused upon the need for concerted efforts aimed at promoting stability. These efforts will, of necessity, originate from non-market sources. Of course Summers and the World Bank differ from Perelman in their solutions, but this is hardly unexpected, given their advocacy and implementation of policies responsible for heightening economic instability in the first place.

At a time when US economic health appears to depend somewhat disproportionately upon the wisdom of another notably non-market institution, Alan Greenspan, Perelman's book offers a welcome injection of critical objectivity. It is well-argued and accessibly written. It deserves a wide readership.

1 out of 5 stars This Book is nothing more than anecdotal nonsense!!!.......1999-06-24

This book was easy to read and kept me reading for a reason: I was looking for the point!!!

Dr. Perelman quotes so many other economists and non-economists without ever bringing anything new to the story. He even goes so far as to provide comparisons to the Biological Sciences, which cloud his point even more.

In short, I could not recommend this book any less!!!

          Book Description

Will China's growing economy outstrip the economic power of Japan and the advanced industrialized democracies of the West? No. For China to continue its phenomenal growth and develop sustainable comparative advantage, it needs to sustain a huge world market for its products and the technological and organizational capacity for innovation. According to Arayama and Mourdoukoutas, because China cannot secure these economic conditions, its role in the world economy will be limited to that of a mass producer of certain types of products. China's strength is its low-cost, mass-production capacity--but the lack of an ingrained capacity to innovate constrains China to transforming foreign innovations into lower-priced imitations. Arayama and Mourdoukoutas detail their argument carefully and precisely, in a well-written analysis that will be necessary reading for business decision makers and their academic colleagues, and for others who are seriously interested in the future of world business.

          Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Fairly gravitas free.......2002-09-22

This book has not really said anything new that has not been said in other books-- particularly "The China Dream" (J. Studwell). It's just that they spent a lot less time analyzing their assertions.

It just seems a bit, well, incomplete.

          1. They spend a lot of time worrying about the balance of trade. On the one hand, they talk against mercantilism and label it as "bad," but on the other, they attribute Japan's technological advance as the reason for its trade surplus. Nevermind that the trade surplus has gotten higher during the worse parts of their extended economic crisis, or that the US trade deficit has gotten more negative during the longest expansion in our history.

          2. Countries are NOT corporations. They assert that there are production chains (of a sort), in which there are companies that invent, others that innovate, and still others that manufacture. So, by this line of reasoning, the US (with its great commitment to basic research) is an inventor, Japan (with its great commitment to reinventing the wheel/ improving existing technology) is an "innovator," and China (with neither the capability to invent things, nor "innovate" them) is a manufacturer. Is this really what one observes in real life? The United Kingdom may actually have MORE publications in basic research (when adjusted for the population size) than the US, but its economy is no more productive than that of, say, Singapore. In fact, the GDP percapita in Singapore is actually HIGHER than in the UK.

          3. There have been more chances for China to get involved in world trade and "The Global Economy," than the authors mentioned. But each time, they have failed. The authors threw this out, but did not spend enough time detailing any of the examples that they gave. For example: The authors asked if China was "able" to innovate. Rather than speaking of this in terms of their infrastructure (insufficient access to public universities, etc) and organization, they gave some vague, grasping reasons for their failure.

          4. What does a "technology trade balance" mean? France has a negative balance of trade with roughly 40% of the number of patent applications as the USA (which has a huge postive balance of trade in that area). Japan, on the other hand, has a balance less than 1/15th of that of the US, but with three times the number of patent applications. Does this mean that foreigners find that their investment in technology goes further in France and choose to invest it there (hence the negative balance of trade)? Does this mean that the average patent is less fruitful in Japan than in the USA? There is almost no discussion of this chart in the text.

In summary, I would prefer just a bit more detail/ gravitas and a little less Japanese chauvinism in this book.

5 out of 5 stars NEW INSIGHT ON CHINA'S ASCENT TO THE WORLD STAGE.......1999-06-25

This book provides new insight for those interested in the formulation of business strategy in entering China's market. It offers a fresh perspective, especially to those interested in breaking into this lucrative and enormous market. Dr. Mourdoukoutas has a keen grasp of the issues and presents them thoughtfully and logically.

              Book Description

In a world where customer demand is rewriting the rules of manufacturing success, yesterday's best practices may actually hinder companies more than help them. The Quantum Leap: Next Generation documents the forces shaping today's demad-driven markets and equips organizations with the knowledge and insight to navigate the transition to Demand Flow Technology (DFT) - a unique combination of innovative management philosophy, revolutionary manufacturing practices, and flexible employees.

The first edition of The Quantum Leap - and its French, German, Italian and Spanish translations - played a key role in some of the most dramatic manufacturing success stories of the past decade. This update of John R. Costanza's original worldwide bestseller examines the impact and implications of recent industry trends, new technologies, and emerging business practices on manufacturing practices. But the focus remains the same: how to build sustainable competitive advantage by responding to customer demand in real time, every day. To remain competitive in today's dynamic global economy, companies must become demand-driven. This comprehensive desk reference provides a proven mathematically based roadmap for implementing DFT.

              Key Features:

-Discusses the benefits of RFID technology and explains how speed to market can elevate a manufacturer to a position of market leadership and dominance
-Demonstrates that by linking flow-manufacturing technology with simultaneous concurrent engineering techniques, companies can reach new levels of responsiveness and speed-to-market for delivering high-quality products on demand
-Equips organizations with the knowledge to navigate the transition to Demand Flow Technology (DFT) — a unique combination of innovative management philosophy, revolutionary manufacturing practices, and flexible employees
-Enables shorter lead-times, improved cash flow, dramatic increases in inventory turns, radical inventory reductions, increased productivity, and lower overhead costs

                Book Description

This year's Global Competitiveness Report appears at a time of exceptional uncertainty. Global economic activity has slowed substantially, stock markets have shown considerable volatility, and the world's major currencies have experienced significant fluctuations. In Europe, where the final steps toward monetary are being taken, output has declined considerably below the region's production potential. In Japan, there are serious concerns about a prolonged recession, and in several countries throughout the rest of Asia, industrial production has shrunk markedly. Other emerging market economies have been subject to financial turmoil that reminds us of the severe crises of 1997 and 1998. The greatest uncertainty, however, concerns the United States, whose economy had essentially come to a standstill in the second quarter of 2001. Coping with the enormous challenges currently facing the global economy requires pursuing a prudent and proactive macroeconomic policy stance. More importantly, it requires strengthening the cross-border networks that promote private investment, entrepreneurship, and social progress around the world. In this endeavor, The Global Competitiveness Report remains an invaluable tool by identifying existing impediments to economic growth and thus helping in the design of policy measures to remove such obstacles as a precondition for advancing human well-being across the globe. This year's Report appears in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks in the United States. The unprecedented tragedy that occurred - and the events these attacks have triggered - have profoundly affected the global economic outlook. In response to this extraordinary economic shock, the 2001-2002 Report includes a separate, shorter-term analysis of the world economy in the new Introduction. Based on responses from 90 senior executives whose companies are part of the World Economic Forum, this "flash survey" assesses the magnitude of the effects of September 11 over the coming months. In addition, no fewer than 17 countries have been added to the country profile analysis, reflecting the rising integration of developing countries into the global economy. It also ensures that The Global Competitiveness Report remains the most authoritative source for policymakers, the business community, and other key stakeholders. Data CD-ROM: For the first time ever, results from the World Economic Forum/Harvard University Executive Opinion Survey are available to researchers and policymakers on CD-ROM. This includes many of the same results used in the construction of the Growth Competitiveness Index and the Current Competitiveness Index.

The report is excellently developed and organized. In order to save money I ordered a report that is several years old so it is not giving me current information. This is not the report's fault. It is a good report.

                    Book Description

Throughout the last decade, Latin America has made tremendous progress in undertaking significant structural reforms. In many countires, state-owned enterprises have been privatized, basic infrastructure has been built, and capital markets have been established. In more advanced countries in the region, foreign investment flows have soared and trade performance has dramatically improved. These reforms are even more remarkeable when placed in the context of the numerous upheavals, both economic and financial, that have affected the region in recent years. However, Latin America is also a region that has failed to deliver the kind of economic performance that most observers expected, given its wealth of natural resources, proximity to North America and Europe, and relative level of development. Despite the region's indisputable economic and social accomplishments, gains have varied widely among these countries. While some have successfully implemented macroeconomic, political, and institutional reforms, many countries have yet to create the necessary conditions for fostering economic growth and competitiveness. The Latin American Competitiveness Report 2001-2002 highlights the prospects for growth in the region, and, more importantly, reveals the obstacles to competitiveness. Through in-depth analysis of regional trends and detailed country profiles, the Report assesses the comparative strengths and weaknesses of the leading economies in Latin America. It also contains essays on a variety of issues relevant to competitiveness along with an assessment of the impact of the events of September 11th on the longer-term prospects of the region. The Latin American Competitiveness Report 2001-2002 is an invaluable tool for policymakers, business strategists, and other important stakeholders as well as essential reading for all with an interest in the region.

                      Book Description

In recent years, the delicate political climate in the Middle East has often overshadowed critical discussions related to economic and social development in the Arab world. The region's economic fragility has intensified due to the economic backlash following the September 11 attacks. The Arab World Competitiveness Report - now available for the first time - focuses on the challenges of improving the region's competitiveness at a particularly critical time. Written by an elite team of academics, scholars, and leaders of international organizations, this landmark report is the first systematic benchmarking exercise for the Arab region. It highlights the enormous difficulties that the Arab world currently faces, problems that will only worsen unless drastic changes are made in these countries. The Report reveals why growth in the region has stagnated since the 1980s in spite of some of the highest investment rates in the world. It also examines why, despite its distinct natural resource endowments, the region has failed to capture a greater proportion of international trade and capital flows. Noting the implications of exploding population growth in the region, the Report stresses the need to intensify job creation and to develop educational systems that prepare the population for the rapidly evolving global economy. It also emphasizes the profound environmental sustainability challenges faced by the region. Through in-depth analyses of regional trends, detailed country profiles of sixteen Arab world nations, and data-driven essays that cover a range of relevant issues, this groundbreaking report highlights the prospects for growth among countries in the Arab world and, more importantly, reveals the obstacles to competitiveness. In addition, the Executive Opinion Survey - which includes responses by top business executives in ten Arab world countries - lends depth to the analysis by providing a snapshot of how business leaders in the Arab world perceive present competitiveness and future prospects. The most comprehensive and up-to-date guide of its kind, The Arab World Competitiveness Report is an invaluable tool for identifying existing impediments to growth, thereby advancing the human well-being of the region.
