This important book explores the psychological motives that shape the extent and nature of people's cooperative behavior in the groups, organizations and societies to which they belong. Individuals may choose to expend a great deal of effort on promoting the goals and functioning of the group, they may take a passive role, or they may engage in behaviors targeted towards harming the group and its goals. Such decisions have important implications for the group's functioning and viability, and the goal of this book is to understand the factors that influence these choices.
In so doing, the authors bring together two literatures: the study of rule-following behavior and the study of helping behavior, and show how both types of cooperative behavior are rooted in people's views about the justice of group procedures. The authors argue that people focus on procedural fairness because they use information about the fairness of group procedures to understand both the status of the group and their status within the group. These status judgments are important to people because they shape their self definitions and feelings of self worth. By understanding the motivations which underlie willingness to cooperate we can better explain why it is that people value group membership, and what groups mean to individuals.
Cooperation in Groupsbook will be essential reading for students and researchers of group behavior in both social and organizational psychology. Given its discussion of the powerful factors that can build higher levels of organizational citizenship behavior, enhance organizational commitment, and decrease rule breaking and other negative actions, it will also be important reading for all kinds of group leaders including managers, officials and policy makers.

Description:
This paper reconciles the inconsistent findings on the interactive effect of interactional justice and social comparison information on outcome evaluation. We distinguish two different effects of interactional justice and examine outcome uncertainty as a qualifying factor. Three hundred and fifty-seven undergraduates participated in a scenario experiment. It is found that, due to the functional quality effect, interactional justice significantly influences outcome evaluation, regardless of the social comparison information that is available, in situations of low outcome uncertainty. However, due to the fair process effect, interactional justice, as with procedural justice, interacts with social comparison information to influence outcome evaluation in situations of high outcome uncertainty. Implications for comparison referents and social comparison motives in social justice research are discussed.

The current research investigates the role of relative intragroup status as a moderator of people's reactions to procedural justice. Based on a review of the procedural justice literature, the authors argue that information about intragroup status influences people's reactions to variations in procedural justice. In correspondence with predictions, two experiments show that reactions of people who have been informed about their intragroup status position (either low, average, or high) are influenced more strongly by voice as opposed to no-voice procedures than people who are not informed about their intragroup status. It is concluded that knowing where we stand in a group enhances reactions to procedural justice.

We propose that self-uncertainty moderates responsiveness to perceived variations (e.g., breaches or provisions) in procedural justice. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that high (compared to low) self-uncertainty individuals are more responsive to variations in procedural justice, because they use procedural information to infer their organizational acceptance, respect, or social standing. In six experiments, high (compared to low) self-uncertainty individuals responded with affective, cognitive, and behavioral intensity to perceived variations in procedural justice. In particular, they felt worse, judged the procedure as unfair, and were unwilling to cooperate when they were deprived (as opposed to granted) voice. However, this pattern was cancelled out when these individuals engaged in a self-affirming activity. The findings establish the self in general, and self-uncertainty in particular, as a crucial moderator of responses to procedural information.

This book is great for anyone who does not have any idea about starting a surplus products business. But for those who are looking for something truly insightful and meaty you will be dissappointed. The practice of "Buy Low, Sell High" are covered well but not much more. The editing and grammar are some of the worst I have ever seen for a professionally published book. It would fail a 9th grade english class. Overall I was dissapointed with the book. It didn't nearly satisfy my need for more in-depth information.

The book makes a strong case for starting a surplus/liquidation business. It gives step by step instructions on what needs to be done to succeed in each of the five business structures: surplus dealing, closeout brokering, liquidating, auctioneering, and mail order selling. Highly recommended. I also recommend Donny's "The Guide for Penny Stock Investing." If you invest in penny stocks, this book may help increase your overall returns.
