Book Description
In this anthropological investigation of the nature of an underdeveloped peasant economy, Joel S. Kahn attempts to develop the insights generated by Marxist theorists, by means of a concrete case study of a peasant village in the Indonesian province of West Sumatra. He accounts for the specific features of this regional economy, and, at the same time, examines the implications for it of the centuries-old European domination of Indonesia. The most striking feature of the Minangkabau economy is the predominance of petty commodity relations in agriculture, handicrafts and the local network of distribution. Dr Kahn illustrates this with material on local economic organization, which he collected in the field in the highland village of Sungai Puar, the site of a blacksmithing industry, and with published and unpublished data from other parts of Indonesia. Dr Kahn's book is unusual for its combination of a theoretical analysis of underdevelopment with a detailed regional study. It will appeal to those interested in South-east Asian studies, in development, and in neo-Marxist approaches in anthropology.

The last two decades have seen unprecedented changes in the economic, political, and social fabric of most of Southeast Asia. While urban centers have been the subject of much attention, the rural areas in Asia are equally critical. These rural situations continue to be transformed as a result of processes of urbanization, industrialization, trade, and technological change.
As the forces of globalization continue to expand, new opportunities and forms of employment have become more and more accessible to rural populations. Despite a growing literature on the non-farm economy and its associated employment, there is much we do not know about its characteristics and potential. In Indonesia, with a human capital resource of nearly 140 million people residing in rural areas and nearly 3 million persons entering the labor force annually, there is both a tremendous potential for developmental change and an urgency to better understand the non-farm aspects of rural areas.

This book by Hal Hill, one of a handful of internationally recognized scholars of the Indonesian economy, is an insightful and now, as a result of recent developments, quite conspicuous piece of scholarship detailing the transformation. The book becomes even more crucial as reading for students both of Indonesia and the Third World because of the rapid deterioration and tragic turnabout of the economic situation. Moreover, the political connection to the downturn of the economy and the human consequences provide essential lessons and remind us of the fragility of progress.

Jim Elmslie traces events in Irian Jaya/West Papua from the departure of the Dutch in 1963 to December 1999. The majority of the indigenous people of the area consider themselves West Papuans living in the land of West Papua, a country incorporated into the Indonesian state without their consent or approval. Made up of Melanesian peoples, the western part of New Guinea is one of the least developed places on earth with the largest expanses outside the Amazon of untouched and, in some cases, still unexplored rainforest and wilderness. It is a region ripe for economic exploitation.
The local people are being squeezed as outsiders flock to West Papua to take advantage of the vast natural resources the country possesses. The logging, mining, and fishing industries are booming, as are the cities, towns, and transmigration settlements. Irian Jaya under the Gun chronicles the rapid changes that are taking place under the guise of Indonesian economic development and its generally pro-crony, pro-military, pro-multinational corporation, and anti-Papuan thrust. It describes what can happen to an indigenous population when insensitive governments and avaricious multinationals are more concerned about profits than the environment or the people inhabiting the land.

A Readable and Recent Treatment.......2004-01-16
This is one of the most recent books published about the history/fate of West Papua under Indonesia rule.
It covers events mostly from the Indonesian takeover till late 1999, with a short preface summarizing events and trends up to 2001. After a short overview of the history of Papua, particular attention is paid to the early history of the OPM guerilla movement, to the economic importance of the province to Indonesia (based on local government statistics), the Freeport mine, and events between 1995-1999.
While individual cases of human rights abuses are mentioned, the major focus of the book is the impact of Indonesian economic development and the accompanying demographic changes and environmental damage on the life and future of the Papuans.
Its conclusion, that independence is the only way the native Papuan people can survive, is hopefully incorrect as in view of recent political developments in Papua independence seems an even less likely outcome today than it did when much of this book was written.

This is the first detailed analysis of population growth in Indonesia as it affects national development, written by 4 authors who have been intimately involved in population research and planning in Indonesia over the past 15 years. The book takes an historical approach in recognition of the continuities between problems of population growth and distribution in colonial times, and those faced today. Because of the remarkable diversity of Indonesia, a regional approach is also stressed, and regional differences are highlighted through the skilful use of maps.
