Fischer Black is known for his brilliance as well as his sometimes controversial opinions. Highly respected for his scholarly writings in finance, he now moves into different territory with this incisive, unconventional assessment of general equilibrium theory and what that theory reveals about business cycles, growth, and labor economics.
The general equilibrium approach, Black asserts, can be used to explain most of the economy's behavior. It can explain business cycles and growth without using sticky prices, irrationality, economies of scale, or imperfect competition. It can explain the volatility of consumption, output, sales, investment, and inventories with axiomatic utility and constant-returns-to-scale production. It can explain temporary layoffs, job changes with and without intervening unemployment, and the behavior of vacancies. It can explain lower wages in part-time jobs, wages that increase rapidly with time on the job, and the forces that cause migration from poor to rich countries.
Although the general equilibrium approach can't be tested in conventional ways, it can be used to generate examples that explain stylized facts -- generalized observations from the real world -- that have preoccupied macroeconomists for the last decade. Black contrasts his interpretation of these facts with conventional interpretations. Finally, he reviews a substantial body of literature on these topics.

A deeply insightful anti-Economics economics book.......2006-07-27
Fischer Black was among the most brilliant economists of the 20th century, with an eccentric style. This book is a masterpiece that goes back to Von Neumann-Morgenstern first principles to reconstruct macroeconomics, stripping away errors due to oversimplified models and overaggregated data. The argument is short and easy to understand, although its subtleties repay many rereadings. The bulk of the book consists of short refutations of other views, organized alphabetically by economist last name (Fischer was an eccentric guy). These contain many important insights, although they require familiarity with economics terminology to understand, and the random topical order is annoying.
Good resource but not for learning macroeconomics.......2000-11-01
This is an excellent resource for a graduate student in economics to have (or for a professor). It has good summaries of many articles and clear information on a wide variety of issues relating to macroeconomics. However, it would be extremely difficult to learn macroeconomics from this book. It assumes that you already have a wide knowledge.

This new edition represents a rather substantial revision of the previous work. It contains an even richer and more contemporary set of materials, thus permitting examination in greater breadth and depth than ever before of those issues that are of current major importance in the field of substantive criminal law. Approximately one-third of the principal cases are new and, with rare exception, were decided since publication of the second edition. The notes following the principal cases have been enriched with the discussion of over 180 newer court decisions, as well as with excerpts from about 170 very recent books and law review articles. At the same time, much of the previous material in the notes and questions has been retained because of its continuing value.

It won't help you understand Law & Order on a much deeper level, but it does get you started on some criminal law issues.......2007-03-27
I was not expecting to focus so much on mental states in criminal law, and thought we would start with elements of crimes (similar to learning about intentional torts). However, as the description indicates, this book focuses a lot on mental states, etc. As a first-year law student, I find this to be one of my least favorite textbooks. Perhaps criminal law cases are difficult by their nature since there are often constitutional issues, but the notes after the cases do little to clear some of the fog. One other annoying aspect of this book is the tiny margins (3/4 of an inch!), which make it hard to write notes in the cases as you're reading them. I think the concepts are becoming clearer, but this book could have done a better job shepherding students through introductory criminal law.

Black And White in Southern Zambia.......2004-04-17
Unfortunately I have not read much about this book. But because the author was writing about my own people and my own area where I come from and where I was born, I feel that he did very well and presented the true picture of the life of my own kingsmen and women. The book is good!

This book is a collection of case studies that explore the learning that people do through community engagement. Developed within a network of Canadian researchers and their community partners, it explores learning that is organized by the learners themselves, collectively, rather than as individuals. Reflecting the contributors’ political priorities, the volume begins with groups that are highly marginalized in our society: immigrant women, sex trade workers, senior citizens, garment workers, women doing community economic development, and people who identify with disability and anti-poverty movements. It then shifts to consider groups whose members have been accustomed to seeing themselves as ‘centered:’ or mainstream: teachers, for example, and employees of the new ‘learning organizations.’ Regardless of their location, the people involved are learning to labour and to survive the turbulence of rapid socio-economic change in the global economy. These case studies trace the enduring effects of gender, class, language, race, and governmentality on their efforts. Significantly, they also probe the possibilities for oppositional action.

Globalization is widely regarded as a means not only of ensuring efficiency and growth, but also of achieving equity and development for those countries operating in the global economy. The book argues that this perception of globalization as the road to development has lost its luster. The experience of the 1990s belied expectation of the gains, such as faster growth and reduced poverty, which could be achieved through closer integration in the world economy.
The authors demonstrate that the downside of globalization for developing countries has proved to be far greater than is generally accepted. Based on empirical facts and sound economic reasoning, they arrive at a non-conventional interpretation of the impact of globalization on the development process of poor countries and propose policy alternatives to the standard `Washington consensus'. On the external front, they find that developing countries need to actively manage their integration into the global economy if they are to overcome the imbalances and instabilities associated with international flows of goods and capital and be capable of pursuing broad based and equitable economic development. Domestically, they show that such development can often be achieved by deviating from, rather than adhering to, the `Washington consensus' (fiscal and other) policy norms.
The distinguished group of contributors have produced a provocative book which is a substantial contribution to the debate on globalization. It will appeal to development economists in particular, and economists in general who like to question contemporary economic reasoning.
