Retracing the story of Asia's "Crisis Five"--Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand--Padma Desai argues that the region's imprudently fast-paced opening to the free flow of capital was pushed by determined advocates, official and private, in the global economy's U.S.-led developed center. Turmoil ensued in these peripheral economies, the Russian ruble faltered, and Brazil was eventually hit. The inequitable center-periphery relationship also extended to the policy measures that the crisis-swept economies implemented under International Monetary Fund bailouts, which intensified the downturns induced by the panic-driven outflows of short-term capital.
Financial Crisis, Contagion, and Containment examines crisis origin and resolution in a comparative perspective by combing empirical evidence from the most robust economies to the least. Why is the U.S. relatively successful at weathering economic ups and downs? Why is Japan stuck in policy paralysis? Why is the European Central Bank unable to achieve both inflation control and stable growth? How can emerging markets avoid turbulence amid free-flowing speculative capital from private lenders of the developed center? Engaging and nontechnical yet deeply insightful, this book appears at a time when the continuing turmoil in Argentina has revived policy debates for avoiding and addressing financial crises in emerging market economies.

A Must Read for All Direct Marketers.......2007-10-03
No Direct Marketer's library is complete without Bob Stone's book. While I have been in the industry for some time, I often think to myself "What would Bob do?" This book has had major influence on my career. The concepts apply to my field (Internet marketing) and they also could be applied to traditional marketers as well. Great book!
Ideally Should be Updated Annually.......2006-01-11
I expected it to be much more current, I expected less paragraghs and quite a bit more job descriptions (that did not exist in 2001) AND print-outs of the day-to-day life of Direct Marketing.
What I had was a SOLID, YET dated introduction to the field as it entered the new millenia vs. the primer that I could hold on to that I was seeking.
Don't get me wrong, these authors are legendary and some of the most qualified to write a text for academia on Direct Marketing.
It is just between the 2001 and 2006 editions I wished that someone else
wrote a equally qualified text that would have been assigned instead of or in addition to this text.
Good entry-level Direct-Marketing Overview.......2004-11-24
If you have never been involved in Direct Marketing this is a great overview of most of the relevant issues and opportunities. The text is accurate and concise. Maybe the only (small) flaw with this text book is that it looks at too broad a spectrum of media and is a little too shallow on the core of all direct marketing: database setup and modelling. But then again that may just be too tedious for someone just wanting a quick overview of the field.
Don't reinvent the wheel.......2002-02-28
This edition is one of the best texts on direct marketing. A classic text that everyone involved in direct marketing should read, this edition includes a lot more material on digital forms of direct marketing than the previous versions. These digital forms include marketing via the Internet; from banners and buttons to e-mail, online merchandising and website navigation and many other concerns. The text covers every form of direct marketing in detail as well as many case studies to show how they were used or are being used successfully.

Review of direct marketing methods available.......2003-10-18
The book lists and describes the direct marketing media you can use (magazines, newspapers, direct mail, etc), but it doesn't really give an insight on what works, what doesn't. Don't expect to get a good advice on how to write headlines for instance. There are no case studies or examples. If you are a beginner, or a student, it might come handy.
I was a little disappointed though.
Good Overview of Traditional Direct Marketing.......2000-06-13
This is a good book for getting an overview of Direct Marketing. It
is, however, not up to date. From the time of the last publishing
(1996, 6th edition) there have been many changes in the world of
direct marketing. Some of the terminology is outdated, especially in
the chapter on creative writing. There is no mention of newer types
of direct marketing, i.e Loyalty Programs and the chapter on New Media
is thin, with scant info. on the internet. (This review refers to a previous edition of this title.)
Successful Direct Marketers use these methods!.......2000-04-25
Mr. Stone lays out in complete and easily to understand terms, the essential techniques for planning objectives and strategies and properly using tactics.
Every direct marketer has read this book and uses its guidelines for timeless, quality, financially successful direct marketing planning.
I encourage you to read it.

Since World War II the subject of social choice has grown in many and surprising ways. The impossibility theorems have suggested many directions: mathematical characterisations of voting structures satisfying various sets of conditions, the consequences of restricting choice to certain domaines, the relation to competitive equilibrium and the core, and trade-offs among the partial satisfactions of some conditions. The links with classical and modern theories of justice and, in particular, the competing ideas of rights and utilitarianism have shown the power of formal social choice analysis in illuminating the most basic philosophical arguments about the good social life. Finally, the ideals of the just society meet with the play of self interest; social choice mechanisms can lend themselves to manipulation, and the analysis of conditions under which given ideals can be realised under self interest is a political parallel to the welfare economics of the market. The contributors to these volumes focus on these issues at the forefront of current research.
