A Doorway to understanding Global Geographies........2000-06-18
I study Human Geography and for a long time I have been searching for a book such as this. The Geo-economic,political,social,cultural and environmental characteristics of global change are all explored and organised into 5 doorways. I found that the chapter on Geo-Politics was exceptionally good going deeply into the Cold War and the Welfare State. My enthusiasm for this text is not only from what it says but how it has said it. It is clearly written and provides a succinct commentary, making a very good book for anybody interested in Globalistation or for first year students studying it.
Book Description

Businesspeople are always looking for strategies to improve their companies. James M. Citrin's Zoom serves up a fine compendium of them, distilling lessons learned from 12 leading firms into a half-dozen "success factors" whose nuances are illustrated by case studies of the spotlighted enterprises. Citrin, a Spencer Stuart managing director who specializes in CEO searches, mixes "enduring leadership principles with e-commerce management strategies" in plotting a map to follow as one negotiates the ever-changing road to the New Economy. His resultant themes are Go for Speed; Create a Learning Organization; Obsess the Customer; Reward (Appropriate) Risk-Taking and Failure; Absorb Uncertainty; and Master Deal-Making and Partnering Skills, illuminated by examinations of such firms as Akamai Technologies, The Motley Fool, Wal-Mart.com, Yahoo! and Cisco Systems. Some of the ideas have certainly been expressed elsewhere previously, and not all of the corporate models look as good in hindsight as they may have initially, but the specifics and the directions offered are nonetheless potentially valuable to anyone searching for possible routes past today's increasingly mixed signals. A final section called "Execute" and a series of implementation tips for each of the six guideposts solidly move the ideas from abstractions to possibilities. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
A groundbreaking new book that examines the companies leading the charge in merging the practices of traditional and e-commerce business -- and the lessons we can learn from them.
In Lessons from the Top, James M. Citrin, of the world-renowned executive search firm Spencer Stuart, identified and interviewed (with coauthor Thomas Neff) the fifty top CEOs in America, and distilled the essential principles of leadership they all share.
In Citrin's compelling new management book, Zoom, he offers in-depth analyses of twelve market leaders -- including General Motors' e-GM, BEA Systems, eBay, Sun Microsystems, and General Electric -- and reveals how they are bridging the complex demands of yesterday's and today's economies. From the hard-won lessons these pioneering market leaders have learned along the way, Citrin identifies the principles that characterize success today and will help chart success in the future -- principles that other companies can use to redirect their thinking, resources, and energies. Among them:
Encourage flexibility. Relationships are much more fluid and multidimensional today. Rather than using a strategic planning process, the best leaders use a strategic framework, with a lot of room for improvisation.
Share the vision. It's not enough to just talk about the company's vision -- you need to evangelize about it, and repeat its mantra so often that it becomes second nature to everyone in the company.
Create a genuine learning organization by shortening feedback cycles, effectively transferring knowledge, and expanding a company's "listening circles."
Reward Failure. It is important to find ways to mitigate personal and organizational risk, and identify and encourage risk takers. They are the ones who can transform a company.
What makes this book invaluable are the strategies top managers and executives reveal on how to implement their principles of success: how to flatten the organization, be first to market, measure the right things, and manage customer information. The result is an indespensable road map of the twenty-first century economy that corporate leaders can use to guide and shape their own efforts.
In the bestselling fashion of First, Break All the Rules and Built to Last, Zoom is essential reading for those determined to triumph in the years ahead.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful, Prescriptive, and Enjoyable.......2002-10-02
For those looking for a roadmap for sucessful businesses, Zoom is the book for you. With Zoom, Jim Citrin insightfully reveals the important success factors for successful businesses, and how companies have deployed them. The lessons of Zoom are not time dependent; they transcend business and technology eras. Zoom could also serve as an important aid for companies that have become derailed and provide a roadmap to get them back on the success road. I thought Zoom was excellent - insightful, actionable, and enjoyable.
Highly Recommended!.......2002-03-23
James M. Citrin draws his new business wisdom from detailed studies of 12 successful start-ups and blue chips. Identifying the common threads in these two groups, he comes to a simple conclusion: To win in the modern marketplace, companies must combine traditional management techniques with cutting-edge methods and technology. Even if some the conclusions presented here fail to surpass the obvious, we from getAbstract recommend this book for its cross-section of best practices, old and new.
Tons of useful stuff for real business people.......2002-03-08
Not too trendy, not too trite--just right, which is unusual in business books. Yeah, lots of companies have flamed out, and values are way down, and there's this Enron thing. But the Internet is still changing, if not everything, a lot of things. And perspicacious executives will be looking for ideas about how to stay ahead, because it isn't getting any easier or any less competitive. Citrin's book offers a lot of real, practical insight gleaned from an assortment of businesses that, whatever the stock price says this week, seem pretty likely to survive and prosper.
Entertaining, Insightful, and Practical.......2002-01-25
I've now heard a lot of people talking about Zoom and now I know why. When you open it up, you're immediately drawn into the text with a compelling prologue which sets the stage for why this book is important and relevant in a post 9/11 world. Then it finds just the right balance between aspiration and reality in describing how to thrive in the volatile world we live in. My favorite thing of all are the spectacular illustrations that adorn the beginning of each chapter and section. The layout and look and feel of the book is as good as the writing and content. Highly recommended for anyone interested in business success.
Thoughtful, good read!.......2002-01-24
I picked up a review copy of this book because of its great cover and was quickly impressed! The author layed out a logical approach to leadership qualities from his last book and then wrote about "the world to come" from examples from large to small companies. The stories were great and the last part of the book had great vignettes and tips in a very presentable format. Great read, fun book. I highly recommend.

Book Description
Persistent Disparity provides a comprehensive examination of the magnitude and scope of racial economic disparity in the United States. The authors directly assess the extent of black economic progress in the U.S. since World War II and address the controversy of whether the racial income gap is closing or widening as America approaches the 21st century. Darity and Myers also carefully consider the competing theories that purport to explain the on-going black-white differences, ranging from cultural-genetic hypotheses to those that emphasize discrimination and exploitation. They explicitly make the connection between what the theory of racial inequality espouses and corresponding policy recommendations for remedying such disparity such as affirmative action and reparations. The authors challenge the cultural-genetic explanation and advance a new theoretical explanation that incorporates a more expansive characterization of the nature and role of discrimination. They also conclude that conventional anti-discrimination efforts are unlikely to be sufficient to close the gap.
This book will be essential reading for anyone interested in US social and economic history, political economy, African-American studies, and public policy.

Persistent Disparity.......2000-05-27
This book does a good job at adressing the widening gap among various groups across the country. It is good for anyone concerned with people and inequality in the world. It allows you to step out of your current world and see the bigger picture. The research and statics seem very thorough. The biggest criticism that I have is the lack of inclusion of all minorities. The focus seems to be black and white issues leaving out all others. It does have some information on male female inequalities which are good.

The best salespeople provide solutions that build trust and credibility, rather than relying on tricks and manipulation. This guide explains how to create that trust, as well as how to conduct customer-focused interviews, deliver outstanding proposals, handle objections, and negotiate win-win agreements. A focus on "buying" the salesperson rather than the product sets this book apart.

Dangerous Stuff.......2001-09-06
This book is 8 years out of date. In working with this text I found that many of the names of the organizations listed had changed, all the listed phone numbers were invalid, and most of the addresses and zip codes had changed. Therefore the validity of the "work around" suggestions are suspect. You will end up using a different book, one more current, so you may as well start there rather than with this one.
New Credit File is Illegal!.......1999-08-27
The information that this book contains is very illegal. I should know... I owned a small mail order company and we sold a book with the exact same information as this one and the FBI is now in the process of sending me to prison simply because I sold this information.Don't Buy It - Don't Sell It, Trust me, write to me, ask me....This information destroyed my whole families life... Dont have the FBI come to your home and take away all that you have, then all that you will ever have. Don't Buy It - Don't Sell It - Please for the sake of your entire life.
great book has all the tricks of the trade.......1999-08-22
i recommend this book to every consumer who has had credit problems in the past . it is a must have piece of information if you plan on having a- 1 credit in the future
Informative and Easy to understand.......1999-08-21
This book is a great step by step guide thats easy to understand. It contains helpful sample letters as well as dispute methods for those who are not sure how to start on their journey to better credit.
Book Description
How to Change Your Identity & Erase Bad Credit is an "instruction" manual written by James J. Doolin and based on personal experience. This book contains information on counterfeiting birth certificates and other documents so that one may apply for legitimate I.D.
The credit section of the book gives instructions on how to prepare a "release letter" from a collection agency to send to the credit bureaus showing that you've paid for a delinquent account or charge-off without really paying for the account. Sample letters included inside the book.
It takes about 30 days for the credit bureau to update your report once the information is received.
The final part of the book explains how to profit on the exchange of Canadian travelers cheques. (No, you don't have to go to Canada)
Customer Reviews:
For veteran husslers & scammers.......2005-12-23
I'm James Doolin the author of the above titled book. After reading a couple of the reviews that were not complimentary I thought I should add a few comments. First, the info in the book is based on my own personal experiences. The directions and methods I write about are very explicit and pretty detailed. However, it doesn't mean that everybody can do it. My book gives instructions on how to break the law or manipulate the system. Whenever you attempt to do this there are no guarantees. So just because one or two reviewers were unsuccessful doesn't mean the info in the book is not good. I've been hussling and scamming for over 10 years. I'm pretty good at it, even though I have been twice convicted in federal court doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doing, on the contrary my convictions demonstrate that I do know what I was doing because if I wasn't successful I wouldn't have been convicted. You can read a medical book on how to perform an operation, doesn't make you a doctor and able to successfully perform the operation. Everybody has different skill levels and abilities. I do attempt to make it as easy as possible for the reader to follow my instructions though. In addition, I put my phone number and email address inside my book for the reader to contact me if they have questions. My book is also available on my personal website and retails for $30. Just type the title of the book into Google or Yahoo and you should find it.
James J. Doolin, Dallas, Texas December 22, 2005
How to Change Your Identity & Erase Bad Credit.......2001-07-19
Written and self-published by James Doolin, a three-time federal ex-con who was imprisoned for providing new identities to more than 1,100 illegal immigrants over 3 years, this is the book that not a single publisher would touch!
Section One details the many different ways to exploit the United States Identity System, and how to create false birth certificates, which are the foundation (and also the weakest layer) of the system. Sample documents, methods, instructions and practical advice is abundant throughout the publication, with Mr. Doolin drawing on his numerous experiences as he tells it all.
Section Two provides all the information you need to strike negative information from your credit record, including charge-offs, leases, loans, mortgages and just about anything else you can get stuck with on your credit record. Using the tried and true methods described in excruciating detail, and a little bit of effort, you can have an A-1 credit record within just a few months.
Co-authored by Denise Scott (an alias), an employee of the major credit bureaus for over 10 years, the insider information available within is almost unbelievable. While the book is plain and bland in appearance, the information contained inside is more explosive than fireworks on the fourth of July. As both authors speak from experience, the information that only the insiders know spews forth in indispensable detail. We have seen alot of "Fake ID" and "Credit Repair" books in our day, but this one takes the cake!
Hopefully police and feds will read this book.......2001-07-03
It will show them how to keep an eye out for these types of cons so that they will not fall for them.
Not worth the money its a con........2000-09-02
Don't buy this book especially since it is written by a convicted fellon, a looser. It does not deliver anything that it promises and the co-author Denise Scott (an alies)she does not know what she is talking about. I tried on of her plans and it was just bull shit. Convicts don't make good authors, and you should not take there advice since they were caught! The book is a waste of money

Illegal practices.......2005-01-17
Hiding Bad Credit Is Illegal.
Some credit repair schemes promise you that they can "hide" bad credit by helping you to establish a new credit identity. If you pay a fee for such a service, the company may direct you to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service, and to use the EIN in place of your social security number when you apply for credit. You may also be instructed to use a new mailing address. This practice, known as file segregation, is a federal crime.
This is a crock AND it's illegal........2001-04-17
He touts something called "file segregation". He also claims it's legal.
It is ILLEGAL...do an Internet search for "ftc.gov" and "file segregation" for more details. It involves getting another social security number (actually it's an EIN--employer ID number that's used for business purposes--but you're asked to use it as an SSN).
Don't waste your money on this...there is no quick-fix for credit problems. There are much better books out there that show you how to rebuild your credit legally.
Informative reading........1999-09-07
This book has good information for those with minor credit problems. It also has info on file segregration, which is only useful if credit applications do not ask if you had previous credit problems. Disappointingly, for anyone who has a bankruptcy, this book does not provide information on how to re-establish your credit with what I consider to be 'straightforward' means.
