4 out of 5 stars complex systems.......2006-09-21

The continuing increase in human populations throughout much of the world drives the relevance of this book. It studies deserts in a global context. How deserts form and change. But the most germane sections of the text concern how humans interact with deserts. And how the spread of deserts can pose a danger to human societies; especially those of nomads and subsistence farmers.

The book is written at a very understandable level for a wide audience. It is suitable for an undergrad or even a high school course.

The material also discusses global warming, a very topical field. The implications of this for desert albedo. Since deserts are a quarter of the planet's land area, perhaps they might mitigate global warming. An open question that deserves more research.

    Book Description

The Global Environment Outlook (GEO) takes a participatory assessment approach to the crucial study of the global environment. It is a snapshot of an ongoing worldwide environmental assessment process, incorporating regional views and perceptions and building consensus on priority issues and actions. Input was solicited from 20 collaborating centres, from United Nations organizations, and through regional policy consultations. GEO describes the environmental status and trends in seven regions, summarizes developments over time in regional policy responses, and concludes with an exploration, based on model analysis, of what we might expect in the future for a selected number of environmental issues if no major policy reforms are initiated. GEO shows that although significant progress has been made in the last decade in confronting environmental challenges, both in developing and industrial regions, the global environment has nevertheless continued to degrade. The Report argues that effective policy setting for sustainable development requires a blend of policy instruments that addresses the social fabric of life, ensures effective institutional arrangements, improves the economy, and protects the environment. Ideal for readers interested in the future of the global environment, this book takes an important and essential look at the perceptions, issues, and concerns surrounding the environment.

      Book Description

"The Global Environment Outlook" (GEO) series are the flagship publications of the world's leading environmental organization. They present comprehensive and authoritative reviews and analyses of worldwide environmental conditions and trends and the policies and policy instruments available to address them.
"GEO-3," which includes a CD, is published 10 years after the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992 and in time for its successor, the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. It sets an action-oriented environmental agenda for the future.
Continuing the global and regional focus of the series, it complements the detailed assessment of the state of the global environment set out in "GEO-2000". "GEO-3" examines environmental trends over the past 30 years to provide an integrated explanation of the developments that have occurred. It not only examines the state of the environment over that period, but also the full range of social, economic, political and cultural drivers that have brought about change. Highlighting human vulnerability to environmental deterioration, it assesses effects of the spectrum of policy measures adopted.
From this retrospective analysis, "GEO-3" then projects future outcomes. It develops a range of scenarios for the next 30 years, from 2002-2032, with detailed exploration of the policies and instruments available at different levels for improving environmental conditions.
Clearly organized and in accessible non-technical language, in full color with extensive graphics, statistics, boxes and quick highlights, "GEO-3" will be an essential tool for teaching and research as well as a vital guide for policy-makers and stimulus to future action.

                                Book Description

Designed to reach a wide audience of scholars and policymakers, the Brookings-Wharton Papers on Urban Affairs is an annual series that serves as a forum for cutting-edge, accessible research on urban policy. The editors seek to integrate broader research into the urban policy discussion by bringing urban studies scholars together with economists and researchers studying subjects with important urban implications.

The six papers in this issue address a variety of topics in urban economics including The Labor Market Effects of the 1960s Riots; The Rise of the Skilled City; School Funding Equalization and Residential Location for the Young and the Elderly; The Anatomy of Rent Burdens: Immigration, Growth, and Rental Housing; The Effect of Prison Releases on Regional Crime Rates; and Who Benefits Whom in Local Television Markets.

This is truly an amazing book. Gale and the other editor (Janet Rothenberg Pack) have assembled an outstanding bunch of essays dealing with various problems in urban affairs, including "Tax Incentives and the City" and "Does Gentrification Harm the Poor?" You will learn SO much from reading these essays. Truly some of the best writing on urban affairs I've read- and I've been teaching the subject at a large midwestern university for 30 years.

                                  Book Description

'Mastering the Machine Revisted' is about the connection between poverty, aid and technology. It is about a search that has been going on, officially in the developing world for over forty years, and less officially in most countries since the beginning of time. It is a search driven today by more hard core poverty than has ever been known, and by a realization that the technologies applied to the problem have severe limitations. We have sent people safely to the moon but we cannot ensure that people will live safely on earth - safe from war, disease, and the crushing poverty that stifles ambition, hope and enterprise.

The book is about development that gives meaning to people’s lives, that is relevant to their resources and needs, and to the hopes they have for their countries and their children. It is about how appropriate technology fits into the larger picture of aid and development, and what it has accomplished in the fight against poverty. The book is about possibilities and limitations. It is about failure as well as success, arguing that too many aid failures have been ignored or hidden, condemning poor people to suffer the re-invention of too many wheels that never worked in the first place.

From the beginning of time, technology has been a touchstone of growth and development. 'Mastering the Machine Revisted' is about a hybrid era, one somewhere between the Bronze Age and the Internet, between sail and jet engines; one in which quality has become confused with quantity, and means with ends. For the South, this is a time of immense technological opportunity and optimism. It is also a period of unimaginable poverty and hopelessness. And it is unlike any other period in history, for today, in addition to artisans and artists, farmers, machinists and dreamers, the direction of technology is influenced by bureaucrats, economists, faraway corporate planners, aid agencies and charities. Never before have so many non-technical people exerted so much influence on the advancement, retardation, and movement of technology. Mastering the Machine Revisted is about the interaction between these people, and between poverty, aid and technology. Mastering the Machine Revisited ' is about the connection between poverty, aid and technology.
