Book Description
The wholly rewritten third edition of this widely acclaimed text continues to offer the most comprehensive and up-to-date description of how the global economy works today. Moving beyond globalization hype, Dicken carefully introduces students to the economic, political, and technological processes that are creating global shifts in economic activity and affecting local communities in highly uneven ways. Like the previous editions, the book focuses on the
interrelated actions of transnational corporations (imbedded within intricate business networks) and states (which act as containers, regulators, and competitors) within a volatile technological environment. Several entirely new chapters are included, and all chapters are revised to reflect the latest available data and theoretical debates. Of special utility are detailed case studies of key global industries and more than 200 fully updated figures and tables.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Book on Globalization.......2000-12-13
In light of the other reviews of this book, I am inclined to agree that this is a heady, academic look at globalization. If globalization to you means Mitsubishi cutting down rain forests or Nike exploiting workers, this book may not be for you. It is, as has been pointed out, a textbook and it is one that will challenge your view of globalization. Having come to the book as an opponent of globalization, this book awakened me to the complexity of the problems raised by a rapidly globalizing economy. As a result, I was forced to re-examine my opposition and hone my arguments against globalization. This unbiased, empirical approach makes the book highly recommended for those interested in putting forth the best possible argmuments about the global economy. It is, however, highly academic and not necessarily for most activists.
Attempting to De-Mystify Globalization.......2000-06-02
Global Shift is an ambitious look at the changing world geography through the lens of the economic geographer. The book is divided into four major sections that allow for a detailed exploration of the various arenas that Peter Dicken emphasizes. The text is wrought with details that make it occasionally dense to the non-economist or geographer but one of the most compelling elements of the text is the fact that in an ever-changing global civilization the text is applicable to many different academic disciplines. It provides an important background for understanding the process of globalization in its many manifestations. Ultimately the text comes back time and again to the idea that transnational corporations and political states inside a volatile world of ever-changing technology dominate the globalization processes. Although the text focuses on the idea that the economic world is global and transnational corporations are driving the globalization, Dicken states that the idea of a faceless/placeless corporation is really not an accurate description of what is occurring. I was reminded of Tip O'Neil's famous statement that all politics is local. In much the same way Dicken emphasizes that regardless of the multi-national face of corporations there is an important local element that makes the corporation more accessible than one might think. Another important element of the work is the idea that much of what is occurring is not new. There have been tends in multinationals for years and Dicken does a good job of historicizing these ideas before he discusses the current situation. Throughout the book Dicken emphasizes the three important factors of his argument. First, that there are new centers of production and power around the world. Secondly, that there is an emergence of new global finance dominated by transnational corporations. Finally, that technology, the center of industrialization is changing at a rapid pace that creates more and more flux in the global markets. The book is dense with facts, figures, charts and graphs, but its detail in numbers is immediately useful in looking at the other texts related to this subject. This text is less focused on the cultural ramifications of its observations but to understand fully the cultural context of the globalization process we must first understand the economic processes in play.
Book Description
An excellent text for clients to read before meeting with attorneys so they'll understand the fundamentals of patent, copyright, trade secret, trademark, mask work, and unfair competition laws.
This is not a "do-it-yourself" manual but rather a ready reference tool for inventors or creators that will generate maximum efficiencies in obtaining, preserving and enforcing their intellectual property rights. It explains why they need to secure the services of IPR attorneys.
Coverage includes employment contracts, including the ability of engineers to take confidential and secret knowledge to a new job, shop rights and information to help an entrepreneur establish a non-conflicting enterprise when leaving their prior employment.
Sample forms of contracts, contract clauses, and points to consider before signing employment agreements are included.
Coverage of copyright, software protection, and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) as well as the procedural variances in international intellectual property laws and procedures.

Excellent choice, great breadth of coverage.......2007-03-08
I am involved in an infringement team at work and needed to learn more about patent law. I also am involved in product development and wanted to know about trademarks. I looked at several books and selected this one based on its broad coverage and structured approach.
After receiving the book, I was plesantly surprised to learn it is a graduate level text book. It is well written, well organized, and easy to read and understand. I highly recommend it!
Essential reading for anyone creating intellectual property.......2004-11-02
This is a book whose content is something that I should have read years ago. I am a part-time college instructor, have my own business and edit material for publication. In all three of these areas, questions and conflicts regarding intellectual property have arisen.
The colleges that I teach for have policies that dictate that all instructional material and software the instructor creates for the courses become the property of the college. While I have successfully resisted this policy at two colleges, my defense would have been much stronger had I known what I learned from reading this book.
I generally create my own material for the training I do through my business and my clients and I have had occasional minor differences concerning educational and intellectual property rights. There have been a few occasions when I was working as a contractor, and the contracts that were presented had clauses that would have prevented me from doing any work for anyone else that they perceive as one of their competitors. This has been a major point of disagreement; it has taken several hours of intense negotiation to resolve these issues.
In a previous job, my title was that of research scientist. My employers considered applying for patents on some of programs I wrote. This was nearly a decade ago, before software patents were so commonplace, so they never pursued the matter. Finally, I edit a math journal and occasionally write or edit a book.
In reading about the working situations of others, it is clear that my need for knowledge in the area of intellectual property law is not unique. Everyone who invents physical or cyber products should be aware of the legal standing of what they create. Questions concerning copyright and patentability are nowhere near as easy to resolve as you may think. Even if you sign a contract stating that all you make becomes company property, you still retain some, albeit limited, rights to the product. With more and more workers performing tasks on contract and telecommuting, this area is becoming increasingly muddled. The fact that I developed training material on my own time and using my equipment allowed me to successfully resist the attempts of the colleges to acquire the rights.
The first section of the book deals with patents, what they are, how to perform a patent search for prior art, how to obtain one, what can be patented, the requirements for originality and non-obviousness; how to continue the patent process if your application is rejected, how to obtain competent legal assistance, how to enforce patent rights and how to use a patent right as a business asset. I read these sections with fascination, I follow some of the "patent wars" processes in the trade journals, but until I read the material on patents, I never realized how complex the patent process is.
The next section deals with employment contracts and non-compete restrictions, something that affects all workers in the technical areas. It was heartening to read that while employers have a lot of power to enforce non-compete provisions, it is not absolute and workers are generally not denied their right to earn a living using their skills.
The next chapters cover copyright issues, what copyright is, how long it lasts, what the requirements are for originality, what can be copyrighted, the consequences of recent legislation, and mask work protection rights. The final chapters deal with trade secret law, trademarks and cybersquatting.
As I organized my thoughts before beginning this review, the question that I pondered many times and in as many ways as I could think of was: "Is there any area of information technology where a worker would not benefit from reading at least several chapters of this book?" After hours of thought, the answer is that there is no such area. Every line of code you write or alter is potentially part of a patentable product. There is no dispute that intellectual property is rapidly becoming the greatest single asset that many companies have. I have no way of knowing when it will occur, but at some point the worldwide monetary value of intellectual property will exceed that of physical assets. With this backdrop, understanding the basics of intellectual property will become a business skill as essential as knowing the fundamental rules of economics. To some, that is already the case.
Therefore, whatever your position in the intellectual property food chain, this is a book that you must read. I may have learned more valuable information from this book than from any other that I have read. It is definitely on my best books of the year list.

Book Description
This concise introduction to European patent law and global patent perspectives combines the legal and economic perspectives to adopt a unique approach that serves both inventors -- engineers and scientists -- as well as financiers and economists.
Written by experts with first-hand knowledge this book is completely up-to-date, taking into account recent additions to European patent law, especially in the field of biotechnology and genetics. While concentrating on the EU, the world perspective is nevertheless represented, including US particularities. The result is a set of guidelines allowing readers to develop a holistic patent strategy suitable for their specific needs.
For scientists, engineers, managers and financiers in the chemical industry.
Book Description

New in the Second Edition: · Techniques for searching the Internet · Internet addresses for patent information and references · A new chapter providing the forms required to file a patent · Expanded coverage of international patents The nontechnical style of this book makes it easy to read and understand. By providing a basic working knowledge of patents, Patent Fundamentals for Scientists and Engineers, Second Edition enables non-specialists to make well-informed decisions affecting new and patentable products. It is an ideal book for anyone without prior legal knowledge who needs to understand the patent system, including scientists, engineers, inventors, researchers, business managers, entrepreneurs, and patent liaison workers.
Customer Reviews:
Covers the First Meeting With the Patent Attorney.......2005-08-18
Note the title -- for Scientists and Engineers. This is not an in depth text that will make you a patent attorney. This is also not a go get a patent yourself type book. This is an introduction to the process of getting a patent and what it is that you have after you get one.
When you work with a patent attorney, the first thing that he has to do is explain to you what you need to do, how you need to document things, the procedure that you're going to have to go through and a whole lot more. This procedure is long and tedious. If the lawyer has to sit and explain it to you, he's going to charge you a bunch. This book does that job for a lot less money, and probably does a better job.
There's one point that needs stressing. After you file for the patent, the application will be declined. This seems to be an unwritten rule of the Patent Office. If they reject it, you're supposed to refile if you think it's worth while. Sort of a test to see if you're serious.
Basic concepts in patent law covered by book........1997-09-08
This book covers the fundamental aspects of patents. The main emphasis is on the US patent system, with a lesser amount of material on Canadian and international patents in general. After a brief history of the patent system, major chapters cover, specifics of the US patent system, Canadian patent system, what are the requirements for an invention to be patented, interpretation of patents as technical literature, patents as legal documents, and what information is needed to defend a patent.
Summary information of the major steps in the current US patent procedurses is outlined. Along with this, a basic glossary rounds out the books contents.
Overall, the material is presented in a clear and consistent pattern. Not a lot of depth of discussion is presented in any one area. The author's intent was to give a brief introduction to the entire area of patents, their uses, limitations, and requirements rather than delve into the arcania of specifics.
The main audience is technical professionals that need a brief background introduction to some of the major concepts involved. The majority of examples are taken from chemical process, substance, and method patents
Book Description
Although many texts attempt to explain intellectual property law to scientists and engineers, they are ineffective because they fail to present the subject within the proper scope; they are either too expansive or too detailed for the needs of researchers and inventors. Instead of giving a mile-high view of all types of intellectual property or, at the other extreme, turning readers into pseudo-patent attorneys, Patent Law for Scientists and Engineers provides researchers and students with an understanding of the aspects of patent law necessary to work with patent professionals and enhance patent coverage. The editor has structured the text so it can be easily integrated into a reader's research routine. Each chapter supports the issues discussed with fact patterns that emphasize the steps necessary to protect patent rights. The book describes actual scenarios encountered by scientists and engineers, highlighting the protection of latent patent rights that may exist within an invention or technical solution.

Good but outdated.......2007-09-12
I enjoyed this book and its simplicity, however, found it was a little out of date.
Good Product.......2007-05-12
Very informative. It was a quick read, and gave lots of ideas for places to go for more information. Some of the links listed in the book are out of date, but considering how fast information changes on the web, I'm not surprised. A much better value than many of the other consultant books out there, and an excellent starting point for anyone considering this field.
OK for a how to book.......2007-03-09
OK for a how to book. It does not give real world experience.

Book Description
Is there a distinctly East European capitalism? This volume analyzes democratization and economic change in the postsocialist societies of East Central Europe. It demonstrates that the collapse of communism was not the same across the region and that the differences in how the pieces fell shaped the building blocks used for reconstructing political systems and restructuring economies in the region. Among the key concepts are the importance of social networks in the economies and of deliberative institutions in the polity that include the interests of subordinate groups in policymaking.

This volume gathers together a collection of essays integrated by two central themes: the comparative economic performance of different economic systems (centralized socialism, reformed socialism, competitive socialism), and the transition from socialism to capitalism under newly established
pluralistic political systems in Central and Eastern Europe. Most of the essays are based on the first-hand experience of the author in stabilizing an economy in an early stage of hyperinflation and in transforming it into a competitive capitalist market economy.

Book Description
Controlling corruption is an essential part of good governance and poverty reduction, and it poses an enormous challenge for governments all around the world. Anticorruption in Transition 2 analyzes patterns and trends in corruption in business-government interactions in the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. It points to some encouraging signs that the magnitude and negative impact that corruption exerts on businesses may be declining in many countries in the region. It also shows how some types of firmsmost notably small private onesencounter more corruption than others, and it underscores the importance of policy and institutional reforms in achieving long-term success in the fight against corruption. The longer-term sustainability of recent improvements is not certain, however, and the challenges ahead remain formidable.

Book Description
Privatization has been hailed as a panacea for the problems of the public sector in developing economies as well as the developing world and the post-socialist world. As this book demonstrates, privatization in practice has often been difficult to achieve and has produced some uncertain benefits.
Constraints and Impacts of Privatisation includes a wide range of case studies from the developing world and Eastern Europe by a group of policy makers, professionals and academic experts, including George Yarrow and Dieter Bos. The contributors explore the lack of appropriate resources faced by many developing and post-socialist countries and suggest how these constraints might be overcome. They also consider the impact of privatization and the effects it may have in the future.

The most intensive area of empirical research on transition countries has been the examination of enterprise-level data to ascertain whether enterprises have responded productively to changes in ownership. The authors identify more than 125 empirical studies that examine the determinants of enterprise restructuring using sound methodologies applied to data generated at the enterprise level. This report provides an overall assessment of the evidence generated by these studies. The authors adopt a relatively informal approach to presenting statistical results. The report is presented as follows: Section 2 discusses the general context of the studies included in the assessment and defines terms used throughout the report. Section 3 assesses the evidence on whether state-owned or privatized firms undertake more economic restructuring. Section 4 studies the effects of restructuring of different types of owners (such as foreigners or workers). Section 5 focuses on the role of managers, analyzing whether the strengthening of managerial incentives is sufficient to produce turnaround or whether management turnover is required. Section 6 analyzes the effect of greater discipline in the government ' s reaction to enterprises in distress (usually referred to as the hardening of soft-budget restraints). Section 7 examines how variations in product market competition affect enterprise restructuring. Section 8 examines the role of the institutional and legal framework. Section 9 is a summary.
