    Book Description

This volume contains the papers presented in honor of the lifelong achievements of Thomas J. Rothenberg on the occasion of his retirement. The authors of the chapters include many of the leading econometricians of our day, and the chapters address topics of current research significance in econometric theory. The chapters cover four themes: identification and efficient estimation in econometrics, asymptotic approximations to the distributions of econometric estimators and tests, inference involving potentially nonstationary time series, such as processes that might have a unit autoregressive root, and nonparametric and semiparametric inference. Several of the chapters provide overviews and treatments of basic conceptual issues, while others advance our understanding of the properties of existing econometric procedures and/or propose new ones. Specific topics include identification in nonlinear models, inference with weak instruments, tests for nonstationary in time series and panel data, generalized empirical likelihood estimation, and the bootstrap.

      Book Description

In this thought-provoking book, distinguished legal scholar Joseph Vining traces the complex roots of brutal twentieth-century human experimentation and extermination to worldviews that dehumanize both perpetrators and victims in distinctive ways, stripping them of their individuality as well as their intrinsic dignity and value. Vining finds a disturbing parallel between these worldviews and what he calls "total theory." Total theories are "beautiful and helpful explanations through attention to system and process" that aggressively claim to account for the universe and everything in it. Vining maintains that some of the most gifted intellectuals and scientists of our time profess these theories without necessarily considering the implications of such totalizing worldviews.

Using the example of the song sparrow and the child, Vining opens our eyes to the ramifications of total theory. He challenges readers to question casual acceptance of the total theories that are widely and quietly taught in contemporary biology, physics, and mathematics—theories that Vining maintains cannot be and are not actually believed by the people espousing them. This book is an invitation to recall our individuality and to take seriously the connection between thought and action, theory and practice. He asks readers to think deeply about what actual belief is and how what we believe in science has crucial consequences for the future of humanity and the natural world.

To assist readers in understanding total theory, Vining draws upon the legal sensibilities commonly shared by scientist and nonscientist alike. He extends his consideration to include the dignity not only of humans, but also of animals. In elegant, highly readable prose, "The Song Sparrow and the Child" offers a reconciliation of spirit and mind, of serious science and a serious sense of purpose and meaning.

1 out of 5 stars Tedious, unoriginal and mean-spirited.......2005-01-08

If you're thinking of reading this book because you think "total theory" might be an interesting concept, don't bother. A "total theory" turns out to be just a name for any theory that attempts to explain theorizing itself, thereby providing an explanation for its own (the theory's) existence.

This book derides as "total theory" any theory that does not include "the transcendant" or "the divine." Cognitive science, in other words, is only acceptable as as long as it relies on silly explanations.

The reason one must not permit "total theories", the book explains, is that those who don't believe in "the transcent" are incapable of morality. If given the opportunity, scientists will prove completely unable to restrain their desire to torture people and experiment on them. (They can't appreciate music either, we learn.) No attempt is made to support this crude bigotry; the reader is assumed to agree. Scientists are just so "ugly," you know.

Like most scientist-bashers, this author appears to be completely unacquainted with science. His qualification to criticize is that he has read a large number of what are usually called "popular science" books. ("Lewis Thomas sang to me ...," is a typically incisive remark.)

That's all that's here. Uninformed, anti-atheist prejudice wrapped in self-indulgent, pseudo-intellectual verbosity. Skip it.

      5 out of 5 stars A crack in everything........2004-04-05

There's a Leonard Cohen song with the line, "There's a crack in everything; that's how the light gets in." As I read Joe Vining's book that line kept coming to mind. While taking on what he calls "total theories" it would be a misrepresentation of the book to think of it in those terms alone for it treats the central issue of our time: Does our most candid thinking, especially candid scientific thought, include the transcendent? (Or, as expressed in the title, is there any reason to distinguish the deafening of a song sparrow, for experimental purposes, from the deafening of child for the same.) And he shows the reader that it does in a beautiful and persuasive way that draws upon our rhetorical nature in a fashion that is more of an experience than it is an argument. It is a much needed experience, in our time and for all of us I think, especially when it is provided by such a gentle, graceful, and thoughtful man that almost any reader would be inclined to trust.
Wittgenstein said that there were things that could only be shown. This is book is about showing those things. I could not recommend it to you more highly.

5 out of 5 stars Where is the Love? - It's In This Book.......2005-04-13

Meeting Ms. Love will have you sold on anything she could write. She is a beautiful, smart, and funny; not to mention a classy woman. Her book is factually correct - it's relevant and plays a valuable role in financial planning. Many books are written from the stand point of expert to desperate reader. This book take is from a person facing financial challenges to finding the answers to relieve their stress. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THIS BOOK. It's original, accurate, and significant. Ms. Love has appeared as the guest of attorneys and lectured alongside a US Federal Bankruptcy Court Judge. They all praised her book (as anyone who has followed her career knows).

When you're looking to find something wrong you will. Clearly you didn't read your review because it's redundant "she self-published herself" and grammatically incorrect, so who are you to criticize. I think this has more to do with gorilla behavior that speaks about on her web site than with the book. Further proving her point about low lives.

You can trust that this author is genuine and the book is great! Well done Tiffany and don't allow these gorilla's to deter you from helping readers who need this information. Fight them back!

5 out of 5 stars This Book Prepares You For Financial Reality.......2005-04-12

THIS BOOK IS OUTSTANDING. You would have to be a board angry lawyer not to like this book. There are plenty of errors in every book you read - if you truly read. What she does is provide the raw facts on what happens during a bankruptcy proceeding. If you read closely the forms she filed in bankruptcy court you see the name of her previous attorney (luckily she lives in the state of California). IT'S THE RAW FACTS. I took control of my bankruptcy case after my lawyer kept charging, charging, charging, and charging. He had a lot of errors too, one that I had the money in bankruptcy to pay him over $4,000 above his base fee. I also purchased this book after reading reviews and meeting this author, who told me exactly what I needed to do and she was absolutely right. She told me how they charge people in bankruptcy, how creditors will try to take your property and how to stop it. This book is a great deal for anyone who has dealt with lawyers who rip people off in order to keep a job. Anyone looking to seriously represent themselves MUST HAVE THIS BOOK.

2 out of 5 stars Gorilla Law isn't Guerilla Law.......2005-03-25

After reading another customer review of this book I was so impressed that I ordered it with next day delivery. It sounded like exactly the kind of book I've been looking for. But I made the mistake of not reading an excerpt first and wound up wasting almost forty dollars.

This book is published by the author herself, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing except for the fact that the text is riddled with elliptical and grammatical errors. Nearly every paragraph has at least one error in it. The printing quality is poor and fuzzy, looking as though it were taken from a bubble jet master copy. The listing of Federal court addresses goes for several pages and is broken into two columns. But apparently the page breaks were set up incorrectly because the listings go down column one all the way to the end of the section and then go to column two at the beginning of the same section.

I could have lived with even these errors since they're just copy editing mistakes, but then I noticed other errors that made me wonder why this woman ever thought she could write any kind of book at all, let alone a technical book on a subject concerning the reader's personal finances. For example, when writing about filing for bankruptcy without a lawyer, the author uses the term Gorilla Law. I think she may have meant Guerilla Law...

Would you take legal advice from a person who wrote like this? I hope not. The lesson I took is that I should never buy a book based solely on customer reviews. If I had taken the time to read an excerpt, I would have avoided a lot of frustration and wasted money.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have For Stopping Foreclosure.......2004-11-30

There are three great books on the market today and I say don't shop around any more. The two best bankruptcy books on the market have been written by women. I purchased Peggy Palm's book first and found it very informative and insightful. I'm attempting to the stop foreclosure of my home. I then purchased Tiffany Love's book, surviving financial disasters, to get the bankruptcy forms on CD Rom and then learned that she too filed for bankruptcy and included her legal pleadings. If you want to stop foreclosure, get Ms. Love's book for sure as it is "hands on", but I find myself frequently referring back to the information in Peggy's to gain an additional perceptive. Money Troubles is another great book that provides wonderful information and exceeds the scope of Peggy's book, because it covers everything inside and out of bankruptcy, like Tiffany's book. Which some people I think may find too technical, but if you're doing battle like I am with creditors the information is right on target. All three will cost you less than $100 far less than an attorney's consultation fee. My verdict: Peggy's book for the legal advice, Tiffany's book for insight and roadmap, Money Trouble for everything else even after bankruptcy. The others are crap!

4 out of 5 stars Every Home Should Have This Book.......2004-11-07

My story is interesting as to how I came about this book. First, this book has more information inside than what the title suggests. You will get your moneies worth and more out of this book. From buying/selling property to reducing mortgage payments to how to stop credit card companies and lenders in their tracks. I saw the author on election day in New York. Although I attended another lecture, I had the opportunity to meet her during the break. She is absolutely lovely and charming. What a perfect name Love. A young woman with no money and in financial straits begged the organizers to for Surviving Financial Disasters. Once they made financial arrangements Ms. Love walked over to the young woman, handed her a copy of the book and signed it. The young lady jumped up and down. She literally cried. I was so impressed that I purchased a copy of this book and WOW! This young woman is certainly taking over our hearts and the world.

In Meg Gardner, who's trying to put her life together after a string of small-time crimes and an 18-month stretch in prison, Jenny Siler has created another edgy, unsentimental heroine whose murky relationship with her father informs this gritty thriller just as it did for Allie Kerry, the protagonist of Easy Money, Siler's heralded debut novel. And Iced, set in the brilliant freezing glare of Montana in winter, is a worthy follow-up.

Meg's working her first legitimate job in years as a repo woman. Told to pick up former air force pilot Clay Bennett's Jeep, she's not exactly grief- stricken when she hears that Bennett's been killed in some kind of drunken exchange with a young Indian woman--it will make her job a lot easier. There's something familiar about the woman, Tina Red Deer, but until Bennett's Jeep is stolen from outside Meg's house and her life is threatened over a briefcase that was in his car, she doesn't make the connection between Bennett's supposed killer and her father's long-ago affair with a Native American woman that led him to abandon Meg and her mother. Even then, the connections are slow in coming. Meg has her hands full just trying to stay alive once it's clear that Bennett's briefcase seems to be missing some maps that a couple of very dangerous people will do anything to get--including kill the only man she's loved and trusted since her father deserted her.

The plot is less clear-cut than it might be, and Meg's connection with Tina Red Deer, while psychologically interesting, isn't successful from a novelistic point of view. Meg herself remains the center of the mystery; one senses that only a few of her many dimensions have been explored here, owing to the limitations of the plot. But there are flashes of sheer brilliance in the narrative and wonderful metaphorical descriptions of an unforgiving landscape:

Growing up, I loved the fire season, the perpetual dusk that hung over the valley, the extraterrestrial sunsets ... some afternoons, when lightning storms raked across the mountains, dozens of small fires smoldered in the thick cover of the evergreens. If I think of my life in terms of combustion, it's this kind of lightning fire that comes to mind. Not a flash immolation but a slow kindling, a red ember smoking for hours, even days, until it explodes in the dry underbrush and the forest bursts into fiery tongues. Though I can't pinpoint the instant when my life ignited, there are important moments I go back to again and again. Like the day almost 20 years ago when my mother shot my father.
Iced is a strong successor to an auspicious debut, one that will leave the reader longing for Siler's next. --Jane Adams

                  Book Description

From the author of the New York Times Notable Book Easy Money, a riveting suspense novel about a headstrong repo woman in Montana. On Missoula's coldest day of the year, the police pull Clay Bennett's corpse from the weeds. For the cops, his death is an open-and-shut case, the result of a drunken brawl gone out of control. For repo woman Meg Gardner, who'd been looking to snag Bennett's Jeep, his death is an opportunity: without him around to make life difficult, the job should be a breeze. But rumors about a mysterious missing military plane --and about her own father's other family --leave Meg feeling decidedly uneasy about the cops' casual assumptions. Only one year out of prison, romantically involved, and working the first legitimate job she's ever had, Meg has a lot to lose. So when Bennett's Jeep is stolen from outside her house, instinct and experience demand she walk away. Driven by haunting suspicions and ghosts from her past, however, Meg plunges full speed ahead -- and finds herself implicated in a dangerous web of infidelity, greed, and murder. With searing prose and nonstop action, Jenny Siler's second novel confirms her status as a brilliant new suspense writer.

                  5 out of 5 stars a great mystery.......2005-01-10

This is a great satirical mystery of the cynical hard-boiled chick-detective subgenre. The plot starts with a dead guy's briefcase in the back of a repoed Jeep Grand Cherokee and soon enough we find that the Belarussian branch of the Russian mafia, a corrupt Senate candidate and assorted other bad guys are interested in the contents of the briefcase. The hard-boiled action incongruously takes place in the rather peaceful college town of Missoula, Montana. Like all other towns, there is a lot of nasty business going on here, however, almost but not quite out of sight. As the heroine Meg Gardner says, "there's enough sleaze under Missoula's veneer to make the place tolerable." This is an even greater story of love and loss and forgiveness...

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is ICE COLD.......2004-01-07

Iced is a murder mystery that I highly recommend. This story is a fairly easy read and it is not too complicated. Even though the plot is very simple it also has a very interesting story line. I liked this book because it had a very good mystery plot with a modern day spin. I do not really like old books because they do not have a good sense of humor.

Meg Gardner was a girl with a life of crime. It probably all started out with the bad relationship she had with her parents. She was thrown into a New Mexico State penitentiary and had to stay there for 18 months. When she got out of jail she was offered a great job that was only offered to ex-cons. The job was to be a repo-woman. The job was to go out and to repossess cars from people that did not keep up with payments. Everything was going fine for her until she had to repossess Clay Bennett's Jeep Cherokee because the person who was paying for the car died. Inside of the vehicle was a locked briefcase. When she was about to take the suitcase out Ivan, a well known murderer but the police never had evidence to lock him up, and his thugs order that Meg has to give over the briefcase. So Meg ended up giving it up. A few minutes later a police chief came by and interrogated Meg. She found out that the payer of the Jeep died in a plain crash a few years back. After a few weeks passed, somebody threatened to kill Meg's boyfriend and also Clay Bennett's friend turned up dead. Meg figures if she wants to stay alive, then she will have to figure out what is going on.

The author uses a lot of sensory details to explain what is going on and you can almost imagine you in Meg's position.

5 out of 5 stars What is in the Briefcase?.......2003-10-12

Meg Gardner, the product of dysfunctional family, got her start in life on the wrong side of the law and she's just out of eighteen months in prison. Now she has her first real job, reposing cars in Missoula, Montana.

When she tries to repossess Clay Bennett's Jeep, she finds the police at his house, pulling his body out of the ditch. Murder, it seems, and the suspect is Tina Red Deer and she remembers her father had once known someone in the Red Deer family who lived on the reservation.

Meg takes the Jeep, finds a locked briefcase in the car and takes it. Someone bursts into her house and seizes it. A second villain comes for it, but he's too let. Meg recognizes the thieves as members of a gangster family from Ukraine and all of a sudden she's too deep into whatever-it-is, so she goes investigating.

Jenny Siller writes great stories about women in trouble and how they get out of it and this five star novel is no exception. I couldn't put it down.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Well Crafted Novel.......2002-12-27

Meg Gardener, ex-con, tough and resilient repossesses cars for a living in Missoula Montana. If you have read either of Jenny Silers other two novels, EASY MONEY and SHOT, you know that Siler's novels feature women protagonists who know how to take care of themselves. They are not perfect specimens like the women you see on TV ads. These tough gritty women do not mind a little dirt under their fingernails. Featuring characters that most of us know a little (if not a lot) about, you can almost smell the mountains in Montana and feel the crunch of snow under your feet: that is how realistic a story Siler writes.

Meg has just repossessed a jeep defaulted on by local eccentric Clay Bennett. That same evening the jeep is broken into outside of her house by a trio of Russian thugs who then get up close and personal with Meg about the jeep's contents. Meg realizes that she just might have walked into the middle of some dangerous business. Bennett's body had been pulled from an unfrozen channel earlier by the local constabulary: an apparent victim of foul play. The timing of Bennett's death and Meg's search for the jeep had allowed Meg to repossess the jeep with relative ease ...and no complications or so she thought. Bennett had been considered a kind of hero-celebrity in the community. He had crashed a plane in Montana's tough mountains during a blizzard many years earlier; and had walked out of those same mountains two months later to tell about it. Apparently, Bennett had been trying to find the location of that plane from the day he walked out of the mountains until the day of his death. Thus the basic ingredients for a real potboiler. The basic plot revolves around the plane crash (the subplot involves some unanswered questions about Meg's family history). The characters range from, among others, Russian thugs, a smart cop, a bewildered suitor, a suspicious relationship between a woman and her stepson and another gun toting gal tougher than our Meg. The character development is superb: all of the actors are well fleshed out and are more than just interesting caricatures. The novel moves at a good pace and keeps you going. It is as good as Siler's first and last novels. Buy it; and you will not be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing follow up to Easy Money.......2001-08-02

Jenny Siler is a lyrical writer and her first book Easy Money was an intriguing blend of tough/bad girl protagonist with beautiful writing coupled with an intriguing plot.

This second novel, Iced, is not nearly as strong. Another heroine who has taken a few too many walks on the wild side, but the plot elements don't tie together. The supporting characters aren't adequately developed and the "bad guys" don't give you the appropriate goose bumps.

It feels like this book was written in a hurry and not given enough time to rewrite and expand the story. This is a book that just doesn't have enough depth. If the writer had just digged a little deeper it could have been a much better book. As it is, wait until it comes out in paperback.

First of all the author and publisher could have done a better job in checking the book for typographical errors. That being said, on to the book.

The information contained is very useful and basic. I like all the website listings and telephone numbers. The book is not complicated to read in one sitting (15 - 20 minutes). You will gain a lot of information if you are just beginning to explore this subject. I wished that the author had expounded more on research information like liens and other encumbrances and how these can potentially affect the bidder.

I originally borrowed this book from the library. But since I thought it was a good reference, I decided to buy it. It is always good to go over sections of the book from time to time.

I would recommend this book to everyone beacause of the rich information that it contains and for the money it's cheap compared to the other real estate books that are filled with nonsense.

I was expecting more information than this book offered. It did contain some basic generic information, but bottom line was go and find out how to take advantage of foreclosures in your area by yourself. The entire book took an hour to read.

3 out of 5 stars Good info, but very little of it........2000-06-10

This book is only 92 pages long, and it has only few sentences per page. It really is no more than an informative, but skimpy brochure, and it takes about 10 to 15 minutes (tops) to read. Basicaly, the only information included is a very general definition of the types of foreclosure auctions you are likely to come across, and a list of addresses and web pages of institutions which might have forclosures available for sale. It is a great starting point, but don't expect any tips, tricks or advice, nor any information beyond the barest of minimum. It would be an OK place to start for someone who has no prior information whatsoever about forclosures, but I feel that the price of the book doesn't reflect the amount of info you get. Buy this book only if you can't find anything else.
