The ten chapters that follow cover basic concepts, special distributions, distributions of functions of random variables, sampling theory, estimation, hypothesis testing, prediction, and the linear regression model. Appendixes contain a review of matrix algebra, computation, and statistical tables.

This is an excellent textbook. It provides many useful exercises and you can find most of the classic statistic theories. So many years have passed since I bought this book and I find myself very often to reread some chapters each year. THe more I learn about the statistics and econometric theory, the more I realize how good this book is.
A Very Good Reference Book.......2004-10-01
We were taught by Prof. Poirier himself; so this was the required text for the course. We hated the book (initially) and called it "the purple monster" and so on, but by the end of the course we realized that it was indeed one of the best reference books available- and I really mean it. No other book covers material like this one does - from both, the Classical and Bayesian perspectives. To some, this book might come across as very technical, so you could/should refer to Gary Koop (Bayesian stuff) and perhaps "Hogg and Craig" or the book by "Mood, Graybill and Boes" (for Classical stuff).

Like mentioned before, it is a continuous listing of theorems with most proofs "left to the reader". While the concepts might appear "straightforward" to the author, I would say someone without prior knowledge of analysis and a higher undergrad math stat course will be lost from the beginning.
It might be useful as a supplementary text to a book like Casella & Berger "Statistical Inference," but is definately the wrong choice as the primary source of a course.
I also agree that classical statistics does not receive a fair treatment. The focus of this book is to show the superiority of Baysian statistics.

Buy this book if you really lIke pain.
Read Hogg & CRaig instead.
The book is probably great if you have already spent a decade learning the stuff from elsewhere and you just want a bOok that compiles a lot of theorems and definitions in one place.
The book is also a great piece of frequeNtist bashing, which according to me belongs elsewhere and not in an "intermediate" statistics book.
BEWARE: the errata in the book is 30 pages long (A4 size pages)AND even the errata has errors..Gasp!

NO BRAINER DIVORCE.......2004-04-18
I loved the advice in this book. It was easy to read, easy to follow and made the whole messy process so much easier and stress free. I don't recommend a divorce but I do recommend this book.

3rd Edition Vast Improvement.......2003-09-10
I recently bought the 3rd edition by Diana Brodman Summers. It is a clear, well-organized description of Illinois Divorce Law that includes sample forms for Cook and DuPage counties. The author warns that the law is changing all the time so you need to obtain the most current versions from the office of your Circuit Court. Appendix A lists contact information for all 22 circuit courts and the counties each court serves. Included are web site addresses for the Clerks of Cook and DuPage County. I was able to download the most recent versions as PDF files from the DuPage County Clerks web site. There is no superfluous discussion in the 3rd edition about how to re-enter the dating scene. Even if you ultimately decide to hire an attorney, I think the 3rd edition will educate you well about what your rights are and what you are paying the attorney to do. The author acknowledges the emotional pain of a divorce and advises seeking professional counseling for that, but she sticks to the law. She paints a sympathetic picture of the daily emotional drain on divorce lawyers who hear the horrible things spouses do to each other. I only gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 because I haven't used the book to file my own divorce. After I've gone through the experience with this book to help me, I might write another review.
Contact Your County's Court Clerk Before Buying This Book.......1999-04-27
For any couple seeking a divorce, especially an uncontested divorce, it is important to know that there is an alternative to retaining a high-cost attorney. It can be, in many cases, quite simple to file for divorce on your own. Yet there is little information available on exactly how one goes about doing this. Unfortunately, this how-to book does a relatively poor job of filling this gap.
This book's particular problem is that it is high on filler and low on substance. For example, while the authors devote a most unnecessary section to the difficulties of reentering the dating scene, they say nothing when it comes to explicating the meaning of the important phrase "to live separate and apart." That this phrase does not preclude living under the same roof can be significant for those who are interested in expediting the two-year or 6-month waiting period.
To many, the book's most attractive feature is the many forms it has in its appendix. Unfortunately, one will find in the text only the sketchiest of details on exactly which forms one needs to file. What's even more aggravating is that a few of the forms in the appendix receive no mention in the text whatsoever. The reader should also be aware that the court clerks of some counties (e.g., Cook County) won't even accept these forms.
Contact your court clerk's office before buying this book. You might find that you've saved yourself another twenty bucks on top of the attorney's fees.

As the markets in transitional economies open and grow, major challenges and opportunities arise for multinational firms entering these markets, local firms facing these new competitors, and policymakers seeking to increase the ability of all firms to compete fairly and efficiently. Yet despite the important questions transition economies pose for policymakers and companies seeking to enter and compete in these new markets, there has been a relative absence of systematic research on these concerns.
This book seeks to fill a gap in the existing literature by offering a pioneering and comprehensive examination of issues that have developed as markets in transitional economies become more deregulated and open. The countries discussed include China, the Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Africa and South Korea. The topics covered are divided into five main sections, and the individual chapters are written by some of the world's leading academic experts on these issues. Most of the authors draw from freshly-collected data in new studies of consumers and/or firms in transitional economies. After an opening section which discusses the marketing issues and challenges multinational and local firms face in transitional economies, the next three sections offer detailed treatments of changing consumer behavior, measuring and improving the marketing orientation of firms, and implementing and managing distribution channels. The fifth and final section is devoted to firm strategies and tactics, examined variously from the perspective of multinational firms entering these new markets, from the viewpoint of existing local firms facing new competitive challenges from global entrants, and from the perspective of local firms seeking to establish themselves in foreign markets where they have not previously competed.
Most of the individual chapters are revised versions of papers originally presented at a conference sponsored by the William Davidson Institute, which focuses on research related to emerging and transitional economies, and have not previously appeared in published form. Thus, the book is a unique collection of cutting-edge scholarship on the various aspects of marketing in transitional economies. It will prove valuable reading to academics, policymakers, and international business strategists.

An essential book for statistical analysts building predictive models for database marketing.......2006-01-05
This is a must have introductory book for the practitioner using data mining to build predictive models in industry. While it does have a few snippets of SAS code, it is a conceptual book that explains the "why" and the "how" of practical model building. (If you want SAS code buy "The Data Mining Cookbook" by Olivia Parr Rud.) It dispenses of with the antiquated notion of the "true" model of classical statistics and econometrics, and shows how to arrive at an acceptable model that yeilds good predictions. As practitioner's, this is what we care about most. Among other things, it gives good explanations of: (1) the EDA paradigm versus classical statistics (2) Tukey's bulging rule for transforming variables (3) variable selection, though there is no mention of clustering to eliminate redundant variables. It discusses some of the weaknesses of automatic variable selection methods (4) smoothed scatterplots and logit plots (5) decile analysis and using bootstrapping to derive confidence intervals for cum lift.
The book shows you how to use logistic regression, OLS, and CHAID to build predictive models. For those interested in Genetic modeling, it has a clearly written chapter on the subject that explains how genetic modeling can be used to create new variables that can have more information than either of the original variables.
While this book does not cover everything, and is definitely not the last word on the subject, it is a solid first word. In particular, the book does not cover splines, shrinkage techniques such as model averaging, ridge regression, ..etc. For treatments of these and similar advanced topics see Frank Harrell's "Regression Modeling Strategies" and Hastie, Tibsharani and Friedman's "Elements of Statistical Learning".
Data Mining for Database marketing.......2003-06-10
I predict that Dr. Ratner's Statistical Modeling and Analysis for Database Marketers: Effective Techniques for Mining Big Data will be on every database marketer's bookshelf. Dr Ratner has put together an assembly of chapters that provide an indispensable resource for the daily problems facing data analysts and model builders in the database/direct marketing community. In each of the seveenteen chatpers Dr. Ratner addresses a typical problem and discusses the common solution. He points out unknown working assumptions or weaknesses of the latter, and then offers better solutions, which require basic knowledge of EDA/data mining. Dr. Ratner's writing style is unique as he makes familar concepts new, and new concepts familar. Thus, the book is easy and enjoyable reading. I specially like chapter that blends statistics with the machine learning, such as the introduction of the GenIQ Model.
"EDA III" for Database Marketing.......2003-06-10
I consider myself fortunate to be the first to review this book. The title aptly indicates what the book is about: Statistical Modeling and Analysis for Database Marketers: Effective Techniques for Mining Big Data. The author provides in a Tukey-esque manner a collection of solutions to common problems facing database analysts, model builders, and marketers. The book can uniquely serve as a textbook, a how-to guide, and a reference source depending on the reader's statistical training and database marketing experience. Moreover, the author actually goes where other authors provide lip service: he creates the marriage of the "old" statistical methodologies with the new machine learning influence by introducing machine learning methods specifically tailored to database assessment of optimal model performance. The book's illustrations involve real problems, real data, and better solutions. This book is a keeper!
