        Book Description

The volume presents a range of critical perspectives on the contemporary agri-food sector. The starting point is the recognition that geography matters in agri-food more than ever, and it plays a diverse range of roles in shaping production-consumption relations. With hindsight, it may be argued that the extensive rural sociological literature on the globalisation of food over the past twenty years has tended to over-emphasise the degree to which food products and processes have indeed been industrialised and standardised. But if diversity and variety have become increasingly significant in distinguishing food commodities, spaces of production, and the practices of consumption, how are we to critically understand and theorise this complexity? What are the features of the institutional, private, public and civic frameworks that work to promote and sustain diversity and complexity in the international food sector both within and between the global and the local? What new or reconfigured sets of power relations are developing through the unfolding of this complexity; and what do these suggest for the sustainability or vulnerability of rural locales and natures?

Through the two sections of the book- first concerning Theorising Complexity, and the second, problematising Local development and Local complexities- and bringing together under this theme international theoretical and empirical comparisons, the book begins to explore this rich rural sociological and development field. The chapters examine in detail the ways that constellations of organisations, cultures and entrepreneurial practices become embedded in discrete spatial areas. They show the importance of these areas and their associated institutions to the contemporary, and increasingly contingent development of the international food system.

*Both sections of the volume take a critical perspective when examining the agri-food sector
*Explores the sociological and developmental impact of the contemporary food sector

          Book Description

The perspective of complex responsive processes draws on analogies from the complexity sciences, bringing in the essential characteristics of human agents, understood to emerge in social processes of communicative interaction and power-relating. The result is a way of thinking about life in organizations that focuses attention on how organizational members cope with unknown as they perpetually create organizational futures together.

Providing a natural successor to the Editors' earlier series (Complexity and Emergence in Organizations) this series Complexity as the Experience of Organizing, aims to take this work further by taking very seriously the experience of organizational practitioners, and showing how taking the perspective of complex responsive process yields deeper insight into practice and so develops that practice.

In this book, all of the contributors work as leaders, consultants or managers in organizations. They provide narrative accounts of their actual work addressing questions such as:
          · How do widespread or global patterns, such as government or corporate policies, emerge and evolve, in the local interactions between people?
          · What actually happens in global change programmes such as installing competencies, managing diversity and assuring quality?
          · What does this imply about the relationship between the local and the global?

In considering such questions in terms of their daily experience, the contributors explore how the perspective of complex responsive processes assists them to make sense of their experience and so to develop their practice. Experiencing Emergence in Organizations offers a different method for making sense of an experience in a rapidly changing world by using reflective accounts of ordinary everyday life in organizations rather than idealized accounts. The editors' commentary introduces and contextualizes these experiences as well as drawing out key themes for further research.

Experiencing Emergence in Organizations will be of value to readers from amongst those academics and business school students and practitioners who are looking for reflective accounts of real life experiences of researching in organizations rather than further prescriptions of what like in organizations ought to be like.

          Book Description

Global Complexity is a path-breaking book, which examines how the ideas of chaos and complexity can help us to analyse global processes. Urry argues that there are major advantages in thinking about global processes in this way. The idea of complexity emphasizes that systems are balanced between order and chaos, that a system does not necessarily move towards equilibrium and that events are both unpredictable and irreversible in their effects. Hence specific events can have unexpected effects, often distant in time and space from where they occurred. This book combines new theory with many illustrations of how global processes operate. Urry distinguishes between lsquo;global networksrsquo; and lsquo;global fluidsrsquo;, and shows how forms of global emergence develop from the complex relationships between these networks and fluids. He draws out the implications of global complexity for our understanding of social order and argues that complexity requires us to reformulate the main categories of sociology and to reject any globalization thesis that is over-unified, dominant and unambiguous in its effects. Global systems are always lsquo;on the edge of chaosrsquo;. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of sociology, politics, geography and economics and to and to all those concerned with rethinking the nature of globalization.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Future.......2005-03-24

John Urry founded the Center for Mobility Research (Sociology, Lancaster University, UK). He is a brilliant sociologist with many important contributions in the fields of social change, postmodernity, capitalism, tourism, and more recently globalization. "Global Complexity" reports his latter incursions in new ways of conceptualizing emerging social phenomena in the wake of globalization.

The book is an abridged version of his tougher "Sociology Beyond Societies", and aims at a wider readership (e.g., see the funky fractal cover). Urry points out that the concept of "network" has been overused and is not enough for understanding globalized phenomena. Globalization, he argues, is much more than the network model can account for. It is a complex reality that is fluid, contingent, reflexive and pervaded by unequal power relations.

An adequate conceptual framework is therefore necessary. Urry proposes a complementary notion of "global fluids" both as an emerging type of network and as an analytical category: the neo-machine is not mechanic but plastic (see, for example, movies like "Terminator 3").

More importantly, Urry is the first social scientist to seriously consider the "complexity paradigm" in the scope of social sciences. Complexity paradigm originated in advanced math and physics, and was popularized by Fritjof Capra in the 1980s. Urry asks to what extent can quantum physics contribute to the sociology of globalization.

"Global Complexity" is a short book with a summary taste. It may be enough for most readers, but those who enjoy bulkier theoretical discussions will prefer "Sociology Beyond Societies." In any case, do not miss out what John Urry has to say about globalization! Welcome to the future...

4 out of 5 stars A great complex piece of work.......2004-10-20

This book, althought slightly informal at times (not in the sense that the work is not formal but rather is lacking appropriate information) is a great book to own if one wants to understand globalisation, and the information age.

it touches on various appropriate topics such as the extremely rapid rate that the global spheres of todays society are changing from a human run world to a machine and technological run world.

read this if you liked or read these titles if you like this:
          - Critique of Information. Scott Lash
          - Archaeology of Knowledge. Michael Foucault.

overall it is a pretty difficult read but amazing to even comprehend certain topics he brings up in the chapters of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Reads like a PhD dissertation.......2003-02-05

Urry seemed to condense what should have been 600 pages into 150. And they were some of the hardest 150 pages I've read. Complexity theory is a fascinating topic and its application to globalization is definitely relevant. However, I found Urry very difficult to follow and I was left unconvinced. I would strongly suggest reading M. Mitchell Waldrop's book "Complexity" to get a much clearer perspective on the theory.

From an initial background of Daoist philosophy, this book first suggests that what we experience as our world reduces neither materially to atoms alone nor, spiritually, solely to idea. Its ontological status is proposed to be "inascertainable."

And its home is language, poiesis. Yet language is understood not simply as anthropocentric communication of a from-to sort between egos. Language is also the unpurposed, nonutilitarian patterns, rhythms, processes and cycles of nature, of cosmos, of the wild within and around us--and in and as our children. The (pre subject/object)liberation of these from a from-to, and from a "business deal mentality" is the emergence of renewed humanocosmic "worlding."

In the setting of this irreducible (cosmo)poiesis of which we are simultaneously parts and participant wholes, epiphenomena, condition and context, we endow the universe with, as we bespeak and embody, its/our (undivided) meaning. And meaning emerges as a new dimension of the self-organizing that reduces to none of its parts, be they mental, material or otherwise.

A tasty blend of autobiography, straightforward exposition, lyricism, political broadside and complex, sometimes dense, discursive development, this excitingly intelligent work is in the end reminiscent of the metadisciplinary prose and scholarly thoughtfulness of renaissance thinkers whose poetics, feelings, politics, epistemics, polemics and even visionary noetics are not separated.

In attempting, in its form and its content, a nondualized interpretation of, and interaction with/as, the world, this work centers on the chapter-themes of: business (and a critique of the accounting mentality via Jean Gebser), childrearing (and the value of both wilderness humanism and compassionate intelligence following Edith Cobb), ecohumanism (in a very Thomas Berry "spontaneities of the earth," vein), and higher education--as viewed in light of what Burneko calls "the global noetic repertoire."

Throughout are developed arguments and references both ancient, and postmodern, ranging from those of John Scotus Eriugena concerning the God-is-not-a what kind of via negativa, to Daoist and Greek notions of the sage as the hinge or pivot whose (no)mind turns with all prospects in their ever varying co-emergence to, yet again, the ideas of contemporary systems theoretical insights, those of Jantsch, or Bateson, for examples, pertaining to what Teilhard, in turn, has called "the building of the earth." These in turn are integrated with such postmodern ideas as those of Ulmer and Derrida. Overall, the underlying theme is of the implications of a hermeneutic, even a conversational (as contrasted with a substantialist), ontology.

This book will be invaluable and provocative to anyone interested in critique and interpretation of religious, sociopolitical, educational, and environmental issues and in nondualism, intercultural and interdisciplinary philosophical hermeneutics and the structures of consciousness.

Strewn throughout, finally, are allusions both pop and recondite, wordlore drawn from deconstructionist and Daoist rhetorics, humor, gentle ironies and hardball challenges, personal anecdotes (some of glowing warmth), multicultural puns and references, and the breadth of genuine learning and thinking in the sevice of what the author early on (too?) optimistically calls "the end of the beginning of mature consciousness on earth."

Not to be missed by serious readers, especially those with an interest in Chinese/nonwestern philosophy, in varieties of religious and of nondualist and process thinking, and in the vigorously and expansively argued prospects of a genuine--not merely ornamental--transformation of consciousness/culture: particularly with regard to its imposing utilitarian, commodificationist and objectivist demands.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed! Fascinating, entertaining, thoughtful........2002-10-12

This was such an exciting read.

It's accessible philosophy, wide-ranging in its scope and in-depth. Original ideas, witty observations, ancient themes.

Modern intellectual discourse is much benefitted by this book's appearance.

                          Book Description

The timeliness of this book is beyond question. Since the crisis erupted in Thailand in mid-1997 and spread, with varying degrees of severity, to the rest of Asia, the export-led industrialization strategy that has driven economic growth in East and Southeast Asia over the last 50 years has come into question. Is this model still applicable to latecomers such as Vietnam?

Based on a detailed analysis of the causes and nature of the Asian financial crisis as well as the Vietnamese economy, this book concludes that it is unlikely that Vietnam will face a banking and currency crisis in the short term, but Vietnam could be plagued by balance of payments difficulties for some time to come unless major structural reforms are undertaken soon.

This timely book will be of great use to Asian studies scholars and those interested in the role of the financial sector in economic management and development. Book Description

In today's knowledge-based economy, service professionals, such as consultants, lawyers, accountants, architects, advertising agencies, IT specialists, and financial advisors, face a dazzling array of opportunities and challenges. In order to compete effectively, they need a disciplined approach for detecting market shifts, harnessing their competitive advantages, and developing service offerings that will attract the most profitable clients. Drawing from a five-year study covering thousands of firms, Suzanne Lowe presents the three building blocks of a market-driven infrastructure--looking out, digging deeper, and embedding innovation--and identifies eleven core skills that any service firm can apply to master the marketplace and achieve lasting competitive success. Integrating insights from the fields of marketing, service management, planning, and entrepreneurship, and showcasing the successful strategies of such firms as Towers Perrin, DDB Worldwide, and Egon Zehnder International, Lowe shows service professionals how to gather intelligence about their clients, competitors, and marketplace; promote a market-driven culture throughout the organization; and engage in continuous research and development to introduce new services. Mastering these skills will enable readers to be better prepared to face changes in the market, and make decisive, informed decisions about opportunities that will prove right in the long term.

5 out of 5 stars The Facts Tell the Story.......2005-03-28

Lowe's book is hard to ignore. It's a fact-based, in your face assessment of how poorly most profesional service firms market themselves. The data for Lowe's work was developed over a five year period, and she created an imperative for service firms to embrace the concept of Marketplace Mastery--and a way to do it.

Using a series of case studies, and research data, Lowe suggests that success for professional service firms requires a market-driven infrastrcture, which she maps out in the book.

Lowe is entering marketing territory that most professional service firms are just beginning to embrace, like data mining, the use of culture to compete and embedding innovation.

The book is well-written, but it's not a beach read. There's a depth of thought and analysis that practice leaders should review and find the parts that fit into their market strategy.

This is information that deserves to be widely heard in the market. I think the publisher and amazon should get together and find a way to offer a discount on this book, like they do for so many others. If they did that, the book would fly out of the warehouses.

5 out of 5 stars Addresses the Achilles Heel of professional service firms.......2004-05-18

This thorough and well-researched book addresses the Achilles Heel of most professional service firms: how to successfully market themselves. It dispels the myth that rigorous, systematic marketing disciplines cannot be appropriately and effectively applied to professional service firms. The eleven competencies are well-detailed, researched, and supported with credible data. The case studies should provide almost any PSF with a peer company to whom they can relate. This book will help you focus on real solutions to the unique challenges of marketing professional service firms.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for ALL professional service firm managers.......2004-05-15

Finally, a marketing book written about a subject (competition) that has been brushed aside by professional service firms for way too long. Lowe's call for firms to adopt a market-driven infrastructure is right on. "Infrastructure" is a mouthful, but this concept is exactly what our company needs. Lowe's book is refreshingly different in its specificity (tells us exactly how we can compete more effectively) and its practicality.

"Hard hitting and compelling reading, it offers a brutally accurate assessment of the Professional Services Industry, as well as a cure."
Tom Markert , Global Chief Marketing Officer , ACNielsen

"Any professional services firm that makes the corporate commitment to embrace the practical concepts detailed in this book will leapfrog ahead of its competition by better understanding its markets and clients. The factual research and case studies eliminate the excuses for avoiding that commitment."
