All adult speakers in Western cultures have life stories argues Charlotte Linde, and the ways in which these life stories are formed and exchanged with others have a powerful effect on all of us. Life stories express our sense of self, who we are and how we got that way. According to Linde, we also use these stories to show that our lives can be understood as coherent, and to assert or negotiate group membership. These life stories take part in the highest level of social constructions, since they are built on cultural assumptions about what is expected in a life, what the norms for a successful life are, and what common or special belief systems are necessary to establish coherence. The life story, illuminated by this engrossing study, is a form of everyday discourse which has not previously been precisely defined or studied. It is an oral, discontinuous unit, consisting of stories which are retold in a variety of forms over a long period of time, and which may be revised and changed as the speaker comes to drop old meanings and add new ones to parts of the life story. The life story is a particularly rich and important area for study, because it represents a crossroads of linguistic structure and social practice. Linde's analysis is of importance to linguistics, as well as having broader implications for anthropology, psychology, and sociology.

It is rare to find a ground-breaking scholarly book written so gracefully while covering such a wide range of scholarly literatures. In less than 200 pages Linde brings down a framework for the understanding of the personal life story which is invaluable for psychologists, anthropologists, linguistis and indeed anyone who wishes to understand the process of the creation of the self.

This book is obviously not for the average reader. I read it for a psychological anthropology book review and found myself regretting every moment of it. First of all, Linde tries to give to many examples and restates the same thing over and over. When I finished chapter 8 and read the conclusion which was four pages I was a little upset. The whole book was a waste of time, by just reading the conclusion the few points that were made are clearly stated there without the non-sense and all the repetition. INSOMNIACS this is a must buy for you it put me to sleep about 7-8 times. Besides that avoid this book if at all possible. You can thank me for the sacrafice I made for you.

Book Description
American Legal English: Using Language in Legal Contexts provides a basic introduction to the U.S. legal system for non-native speakers of English. It combines elements of law with language to enhance non-native English speakers's ability to communicate with their legal counterparts in English. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities are included in each chapter.
While a good basic knowledge of general English is presumed, there is no assumption that the students have any knowledge of the U.S. legal system or legal terminology. Collaborative, communicative activities are used throughout the text to engage student interest and involve them in the learning process. Realia, in the form of cases and statutes, is included so that students become comfortable with legal English and its sometimes difficult syntax. The text can be used for both law students and legal practitioners, in either intensive programs or those of longer duration. Non-attorney English for Specific Purposes instructors who have some interest in the legal field will be able to use the book and rely on the expertise of their students to create an effective learning environment in a Law and Language course.
The organization of the book is by legal content, beginning with a broad overview of the system and how it works, then moving to specific areas of law such as torts or contracts. The book culminates in a mock trial, which provides students an opportunity to employ all of the skills and knowledge they have acquired during study of the preceding chapters.

This is one of the finest ESP books I have used. The book provides not only a basic introduction to the American legal system but also a large number of advanced language exercises based on real cases and legal texts. The exercises are intellectually engaging and the presentation of language problems is thorough and honorable.

Well, it's an Econ book...........2007-06-28
and it's a very very good introduction to economics. Has lots of real life examples in it, shows you simple formulas, how to plot economic supply & demand graphs - not much different from 3rd edition though. (got that one on accident first) and if it's not for a class, you might consider getting that one as the price would be substancially cheaper. :-)

In my quest for the Holy Grail of books about personal debt and financial mastery, this book is a real treasure!
With a sharp sense of humour and a willingness to explore not just the practical but psychological aspects of the debt culture and "perma-debt" -- his term for those of us who get into endless credit card slavery -- this book reads almost as well as the mystery thriller I devoured last weekend.
