Book Description
Transnational integration and other challenges to the nation-state have deprived it of its mystique and broken the automatic link between state and nation. This has encouraged the revival of stateless nationalisms, but also provided new means for their accommodation. The author argues that these changes call for a radical rethinking of the nature of sovereignty and of the state itself to meet the twin challenges of recognition of nationality and of democracy. Drawing on the experience of four plurinational states - United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium, and Canada - and of the European Union, he analyses the challenges of plurinationalism and its recognition. Keating argues that we are not moving to a world without states, but to a complex political order with multiple sites of sovereign authority, and asymmetrical constitutional arrangements. This political order is new but at the same time old, as traditions of diffused authority and shared sovereignty, from before the rise of the nation-state, are rediscovered and rehabilitated. Democracy can no longer be confined to the framework of the nation-state but must extend to the new political spaces which are emerging above and below the state. Political movements and public opinion in the stateless nations are increasingly embracing these ideas and are the harbingers of a post-sovereign political order.

Partly Responsible for Ruining My Life .......2005-09-07
Hear ye! Hear ye! Be forewarned! Read my tale of woe and do not make the same stupid mistakes I did!
I am a pretty methodical person. Therefore, when I was applying to law schools as a college senior, I tried to learn as much about different schools as I could. My GPA and LSAT were very good, but not exceptional, and I was looking for a law school that first of all would admit me, but also that would have excellent academics and would set me up for a nice legal career in the northeastern part of the United States.
I did what the other posters recommended: I visited the schools that admitted me. The trouble I found was that law schools do not make it easy for you to assess them. Most law schools (with the exception of Northwestern) do not interview applicants, and only give group tours where you are one of 20 people. Every school representative I talked with said that that school had brilliant and engaging professors, that the school was academically rigorous yet warm and fuzzy, that graduates of the school go on to work for the top law firms in the region if not the world, etc., etc. As part of my research, I also went to each law school's bookstore and wrote down the authors of the first year texts. As far as I could tell, each law school basically was teaching from the same books.
How then to sort out the schools? I needed some type of objective resource. As such, I bought the 2001 incarnation of the Princeton Review Best Law Schools guide. The guide provided the same basic statistics the other guides provided (average GPA and LSAT of admitted students, student/faculty ratio, size of 1L sections, etc.). But it also had several top-twenty lists. The top twenty lists ranked schools by various categories (i.e., at which schools students study the most, party the most, etc.). Two of these lists were particularly relevant to me: "best career prospects" and "professors rock." The first list was important to me because, if I was going to invest $100,000 in a JD degree I wanted to have a job lined up for me afterwards. The second list was important to me because I wanted to be taught by dynamic and intelligent professors who would be able to transmit legal principles to me in a logical and coherent fashion.
Long story short, I enrolled in the school that ranked 1st on the Princeton Review's "Professors Rock" list and that also was in the top 5 in terms of "Best Career Prospects." My decision was largely based on the rankings in the Princeton Review Guide. I figured I couldn't go wrong enrolling in a school where professors rock and where I would have very good career prospects.
I graduated in the top half of my class from that law school in 2004. I did not have a job at that time, and neither did 60% of the students in my graduating class, including many friends of mine who had gone to Yale, Harvard, Williams, Amherst and other top undergrads. One of my friends who went to Yale undergrad now works the night shift at Target--yes, you read that right. The professors at the law school I chose (based on the PR lists) were good, but not great--a mixed bag just like at most schools, but definitely also worse on the whole than the professors at the undergrad I attended. Princeton Review had been mistaken both about the quality of the faculty and about the graduates' career prospects.
Where am I today? I am writing from a cyber cafe somewhere in Europe. I have grown a beard, I have lost about 60 pounds to change my appearance, I wash dishes to make a living, and I sleep on the floor at a local library. I was not able to find a legal job in the United States, and my law school did not have a loan-forgiveness program. Ultimately, my loans became due, and I could not pay them off. The truck I bought to get me from my apartment to law school classes has been repossessed, and I have fled the country. My hot girlfriend broke up with me when it became apparent that my legal career was a no-go, and I am no longer able to visit my family, as their home is under constant surveillance both by helicopter and by agents who sometimes hide in the bushes outside (or so my family tells me). I live the life of a fugitive, even though I graduated from a supposedly good law school, passed two state bar exams, had a 164 LSAT score and a 3.65 cumulative undergraduate GPA.
To Law School Aspirants: do NOT take any of the lists in this book seriously! At least two of them ("professors rock" and "best career prospects") are complete bunk.
To Sallie Mae: you have my truck. Let's just call it even. I am sick of being on the run.
To Eric Owens: thanks for writing this book. You are partly responsible for ruining my life. I hope you feel good about yourself.
Law School Bible.......2005-07-20
This is a great book. I recommend it to anyone who wants quick facts about their law schools of interest.
useful info but misleading title.......2005-03-15
This book has short chapters about the law school experience and pertinent application issues, but the main reason to consider this book is the section featuring 117 schools profiled in depth. Especially valuable is the feedback, summarized or quoted, provided by students who have attended or are attending those schools. The editor chose not to include students' comments if only a few students responded to the Princeton Review survey, so I accept that the comments supplied reflect a general consensus. At times when opinions differ, balanced views are quoted and provided as well.
The main problem with the book is that the 117 schools selected are not necessarily the "best" 117 schools. All the ABA-accredited schools (and some others) are profiled in the book somewhere, but only those that generated enough student survey responses are featured in the 117 that are covered fully. Thus some top-name schools like Cornell, Yale, etc., are tucked away in the back, and we have only bare-bones statistics describing those places and the other 70-odd schools from which an insufficient number of student surveys were drawn to warrant inclusion in the main part of the book. So the book is really about 117 schools, selected on the basis of the numbers of student respondents; these schools are profiled in depth, and the others are relegated to the back of the book, with minimal information imparted about them. That's okay, as long as you know what you're getting. Just don't believe that the 117 profiled fully are the 117 top schools, according to anyone's view.
There are some "top ten" lists that are fun to read, such as the most competitive schools, the most welcoming of older students, most right-wing student body, most left-wing student body, most diverse faculty, most diverse student body, best career prospects, best quality of life, most highly regarded faculty or overall academic experience, etc.
A worthwhile purchase, overall, for anyone considering enrolling in an American law school, but probably an inadequate guide to use as one's only resource to help decide where to apply, or which school to attend.

Book Description
When Zimbabwe achieved political independence, its new majority government sought economic growth and the redistribution of resources, neither of which were achieved. The seeds of economic decline were sown soon after independence in high government spending that stifled private investment, and inhibited employment creation. The burden of adjustment was borne by the rural poor. Zimbabwe's experience provides valuable lessons for countries struggling with the trade-offs between growth-orientated and redistributive policies.

Perfect Election Year Briefing on the Economy.......2000-07-19
Carroll's Desk Reference on the Economy is comprehensive, issues oriented and balanced. These qualities make it great for getting up to speed for economic issues in the 2000 election. The sections on Social Security, Environment, Taxes and Presidential performance measures are especially strong. The Q&A format works well. I recommend it to anyone who wants to get more out of the news.

Customer Reviews:
Avoid this book, unless yo have ample time, energy &patience.......2001-06-29
This is one of the worst books I have read on any topic recently. It is a bad "me-too" product on CRM. The writer obviously thinks that he invented some "great new" concepts, the main one being the "Relationship-Based Enterprise". But I think this is a terribly hollow concept which is presented in such a "romantic" way in the book. Pages 14 through 95 are about this romantic presentation of the concept. But the point is exactly the same as in pp.1-9. After reading all that nonsense, you end up thinking "why did I have to go through this torture" because the same stuff was already said in pp1-9.
His other great invention is defining CRM as "conversations". Eureka!!!! I suggest he should re-read Peppers&Rogers "1to1 Fieldbook" where he can find both concepts and they are much clearly elaborated there. Oh, I was forgetting, there is another great invention too: The three D's. So, if marketing has four P's why shouldn't CRM have 3D's. There you go, our writer has invented that also. They are Discovery, Dialogue and Discipline. The first two are actually Peppers&Rogers' Identify and Interact. The last one, would you believe, is about management. You may say shouldn't it be an 'M'? Yes, but then you wouldn't have the sexappeal of the 3D's.
This is a me-too book, which, for the sake of being novel, takes up existing ideas and concepts, presents them in such a confusing way so that the reader may think they are so complicated and then goes to use graphs and diagrams to elaborate these normally straightforward but made-confusing points. Just pathetic! I am really furious because of spending my energy and forcing my patience for reading a book I do not still know what is about. Was it Marketing 101, Consumer 101, or CRM '0' ?
Excellent book! I have experienced this subject firsthand........2001-01-18
Customer Relationship Management is a topic that permeates DMR Consulting, a vision at the core of the company's outlook toward long-term relationships with customers. During the period of time I have been employed with DMR, I have experienced a phenomenon not common with other companies, a concept that is a case in point for the topics of this book, what I call "Employee Relationship Management" (ERM). Whether this term is real or not, CRM is clearly not an acquired trait of DMR, but rather an inherent trait attained through years of hard work. I believe the topics of this book were written from long experience, because I have felt the key points of this subject firsthand as an employee of DMR. DMR obviously considers ERM at least as important as CRM, since profit is not the primary consideration at the bottom line, at fiscal end. This book is about people, first and foremost, seconded only by value. Providing the complete solution, and not just a singular service, is a key aspect of CRM, and of DMR Consulting.
Powerful.......2001-01-14
This book not only does an outstanding job of defining CRM (finally) and uncovering the basic concepts involved in CRM but also provides simple, well-organized frameworks for even the uninitiated to pursue. It takes senior management away from the current "IT silver bullet" thinking about CRM and positions it at the business strategy level.
At times, the book seems like a voice crying in the CRM wilderness. However, given the simple and powerful concepts, clearly derived from significant real life exposure, the book will probably provide tomorrow's CRM management gospel.
This book is required reading for marketing and IT executives, and for everyone who wants to be prepared for the new economy - especially for organizations trying to combine "bricks and clicks".

Book Description
Communication between nations is being transformed in ways unthinkable even a generation ago. As the pace of this revolution increases so does the need to address the impact of this process on culture and society. International Communication and Globalization provides an essential and timely survey of the area. The contributors trace the development of international communication while also offering new approaches to this complex and rapidly-growing field of media and communication studies. The essays in this volume scrutinize the impact of market relations, deregulation, and technology of the countries of the Third World, as well as the ethics of the global communication industry. This collection offers a range of perspectives on the relationship between the globalization of process and international communication and, as such, makes an important intervention in current debates about media, technology, and society. International Communication and Globalization is an essential resource for all students of communication, media, and international relations.

Book Description
In 1989, observers of world politics became convinced that they were witnessing a new era: the global primacy of democracy. Governments committed to building democracy had taken office in a range of apparently unconnected countries, including Spain, Argentina, the Philippines, Poland and South Korea. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the pro-democracy demonstrations in China led to the belief that liberal democracy was now the only legitimate political ideology. This book offers a comprehensive and theoretically-informed introduction to democratization. Drawing on examples from Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia, it shows how global transformation made democratization possible and analyzes the processes of political change in key countries. However, democratization is a slow and painful business and many attempts have failed or stalled. This book shows how successful democratization requires not only a favorable international climate but also strong, dense and vibrant civil societies and a capable and flexible state.

Book Description
This introductory textbook examines the role of the Third World in the international system. Development and International Relations challenges the virtual exclusion of the Third World and the processes of development from the study of international politics. The book begins with a reassessment of what is meant by 'development', highlighting the growing diversity within the Third World, and showing that in an increasingly globalized world development can no longer be seen as an isolated practice. The author then goes on to explore the linkages between the Third World and the international system in the 1990s, examining areas such as the environment, the newly industrializing countries, social justice and the international commodity trade. Through this discussion, the author explores some of the most significant issues facing the Third World in the current global political economy. This accessible and lively book will be an ideal textbook for students of international politics, international relations, international political economy and development studies.

United Nations and Changing World Politics
ASIN: 0745319211 |
Book Description
In recent years, there has been a great deal of public attention and criticism of multilateral institutions such as the World Bank, The International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization. Their annual meetings are now events that hit the headlines of major newspapers all over the world. Yet there is still intense disagreement over what purpose they fulfill.
While politicians and the established business community argue that multilateral institutions are essential tools for eliminating poverty, activists and many NGOs regard them as a means of perpetuating and strengthening the global market at the expense of developing countries. However, neither of these viewpoints are necessarily based on a detailed understanding of the multilateral institutions themselves.
This book offers students, practitioners and activists a critical introduction to the major institutions that make up the multilateral development system. The mandate of these institutions defines them as technical and functional organizations. Bøås and McNeil, however, convincingly demonstrate that they are political organizations and show how their programs have a significant impact on the domestic policies of the many countries in which they are involved.

Challenge of Third World Development, The (4th Edition)
ASIN: 0822320932 |
Book Description
In this completely revised second edition, Vicky Randall and Robin Theobald review the principal theoretical approaches to the postwar study of Third World politics. Instead of undergoing Western-model modernization as predicted, developing countries have seen the proliferation of one-party states, military coups, communal violence, corruption, and economic dependence. Randall and Theobald survey and analyze the varied theories born of these developments, with examples from such nations as Chile, Indonesia, Pakistan, Syria, Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania.
This second edition has been expanded to include discussions of the international debt crisis, the impact of globalization on the postcolonial world, the rise of newly industrialized countries, and the upsurge in religion-based conflict in the post–Cold War era. Describing the strengths and weaknesses of the existing interpretive approaches to these issues, the authors explore the often difficult relationship between political change and economic development. At the same time they provide a comprehensive view into the turbulent politics of the Third World and suggest how future analysis can build on present approaches to reflect political reality more fully.
An essential text for students of political science and Third World societies, this volume will also interest anyone seeking a clearer understanding of the current issues underlying the politics of these countries.
