The book was purchased in CD rom form. There is key word searches for specific items. Every builder needing a permit to start constuction should know this book well. Another company that puts out a similar book is called Boca. They supliment and overlap the UBC. Both are handy, but very over priced.

For anybody in the construction, engineering, design, or code enforcement/verification fields this book is a must. It is an excellent reference & resource book with tons of valuable information.
Formating changes make this a challenging book to read.......1998-11-07
1. The overwhelming amount of format changes since '94 edition were unnecesary and confusing. Reference books such as these need a standardized format to allow for easier access to information. 2. Removal of many convenient tables and charts make this book less useful. 3. Calculations too complex to be of practical use. Complexity will certainly lead to errors.

Missing key information.......2003-12-06
There is a very important section of the UBC titled Conventional Light Frame construction (ch23 Div IV), which allows a designer/builder to build a house without requiring expensive engineering. This book virtually ignores it, which I feel does a great disservice to readers. Many (most?) magazine house plans do not include braced wall requirments, which are part of the above building code. It would be nice if this book addressed this important section of the UBC. Also, it seems every time I have a building question and go to this book as a reference, it leaves me dissapointed. For example, requirements regarding grading and setbacks from slopes, etc., which can be pretty cryptic in the UBC. OK for general reading, but not a great reference book.

I needed a book which would give me some ideas for designing my house, this one did it. It doesn't have descriptions for every nail, every stud, but it did what I needed in a clear, concise manner.
Insight into the building code bureaucracy.......1999-12-12
Well, that should've been the name of the book. If you're looking for advice on working within the building code bureaucracy, this book might be for you. If you're looking for advice on building according to code, you need to look elsewhere. It does give insight into the mind of the inspector, admitting permits are for taxing and taking glee on setting the attorney general on a citizen who was trying to prevent the inspector from trespassing on his land. I bought the book hoping to get a concise guide to the code, but was mistaken.

The transformations underway in post-Communist societies after 1989 have generated complex and highly differentiated regional systems of adjustment.
The contributions by geographers, economists, sociologists, feminists, and planners examine the theoretical perspectives on transition, industrial and regional restructuring, agrarian change, de-collectivization and rural struggles in a variety of eastern and central European contexts. Theorising Transition provides both a rich empirical map of the dimensions of post-Communism and raises important theoretical issues about how we interpret these changes.

Behind the hoopla of the booming nineties, most Americans have actually lost wealth. Most households have lower net worth than they did in 1983, before the stock market began its big climb. From 1983 to 1998, the stock market grew a cumulative 1,336 percent. The wealthiest households reaped most of the gains. The top 1 percent of households have more wealth than the entire bottom 95 percent.
Nine years into the longest peacetime expansion in history, average workers are still earning less, adjusting for inflation, than they did when Richard Nixon was president. No wonder many people have been working longer hours and going deeper into debt.
The wealth gap poses serious consequences for our economy, our democracy and our civic life. We can reduce the wealth gap and strengthen national prosperity, if we have the will. Forewords by Juliet Schor and Lester Thurow.

Hey, if you have been living in a cave for the last hundred years, or if you are not American, these communist ideas might be new to you.
Unfortunately, it is the same garbage that has been promoted in American Universities since most were built. The media has never stopped promoting these same simple ideas. The rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer!
Like we care! Just more wolves whining at the piece of meat that can't have.

This is a brief account of the wealth gap and would be good to get a simple grasp -- especially for those with little previous understanding. For in depth needs it is not recommended.
Minimalist Account of Wealth Gap.......2000-04-25
For anyone who stays abreast of current affairs there is nothing new in this very briefest of books (pamphlet). Several charts and tables detail the following: the stock market boom and the huge increases in net worth of those who own the majority of stocks, that is, the rich; the loss of wages for production workers over the last twenty years; the rise of debt, bankruptcies, and college costs; the loss of defined benefit plans; and reduced savings.
This is not a book that attempts to explain these trends. No mention is made of the reversal of the post-WWII social compact, the rise of political conservatism, neoliberalism, free trade, globalization, etc. Without that kind of context there is little basis for evaluating some short proposals for wealth-gap reduction such as KidSave Accnts, ESOPs, Individual Development Accnts, USA Accnts, or various types of wealth taxation.
Unless one is just oblivious to wealth gap trends there would be no reason to buy this book.
A badly needed wake-up call to the American public........2000-04-06

I have read David Alker's book Fat Tuesday in Web World. I had tried the techniques outlined in this book and they work. My feeder pages consistently ranked in the top 10 to 20 on the ticketlist. If you want to be findable, buy this book.
