Jeffrey E. Garten has glimpsed the future of the world economy, and his vision has ten faces: China, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, and Turkey. Garten predicts these emerging markets will soon be viable economic and political forces, citing their abundant natural resources and recent embrace of free-market economies as key indicators of their potential. In an increasingly global economy, what is good for one theoretically can be good for all, particularly when new markets mean new jobs for both the importing and exporting countries. Not all of the sharing is positive, however; Garten believes this global economic expansion will bring about the rise of terrorism and a growing market for nuclear weapons. Issues such as human rights and governmental regulations further muddy the economic and political waters, making cooperation between nations often impossible. Despite its bold predictions, The Big Ten expands our view of international commerce by dividing the global market into more manageable portions.

It now looks like there are really only two, maybe three at most, success stories among Garten's Top Ten choices: China, South Korea, and possibly India. Mr. Garten's next edition should focus on these.

4 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking vision of the future world economy........1998-10-23

This is an excellent publication to read as you are putting together your future export marketing programs. It will provide you with fresh ideas on how to develop your most profitable foreign markets. It is primarily based upon Mr. Garten's experience as Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade during the first Clinton Administration. Although there is a definite political slant to its content, I recommend this book for all entrepreneurs and international trade executives who are responsible for establishing export strategies, forecasts and budgets.

      Book Description

The constant call to admit guilt amounts almost to a tyranny of confession today. We demand tell-all tales in the public dramas of the courtroom, the talk shows, and in print, as well as in the more private spaces of the confessional and the psychoanalyst's office. Yet we are also deeply uneasy with the concept: how can we tell whether a confession is true? What if it has been coerced?

In Troubling Confessions, Peter Brooks juxtaposes cases from law and literature to explore the kinds of truth we associate with confessions, and why we both rely on them and regard them with suspicion. For centuries the law has considered confession to be "the queen of proofs," yet it has also seen a need to regulate confessions and the circumstances under which they are made, as evidenced in the continuing debate over the Miranda decision. Western culture has made confessional speech a prime measure of authenticity, seeing it as an expression of selfhood that bears witness to personal truth. Yet the urge to confess may be motivated by inextricable layers of shame, guilt, self-loathing, the desire to propitiate figures of authority. Literature has often understood the problematic nature of confession better than the law, as Brooks demonstrates in perceptive readings of legal cases set against works by Rousseau, Dostoevsky, Joyce, and Camus, among others.

Mitya in The Brothers Karamazov captures the trouble with confessional speech eloquently when he offers his confession with the anguished plea: this is a confession; handle with care. By questioning the truths of confession, Peter Brooks challenges us to reconsider how we demand confessions and what we do with them.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Law and Literature Scholarship.......2003-03-31

For those with a general background in literature and in law, this book is straightforward and easy to follow. The book explores the complicated act of confessing in a myriad of contexts, greatly enriching the reader's understanding of this most troubling speech act. When so much "scholarship" in the nascent field of law and literature is banal, a profound work such as this one gives the entire field much needed legitimacy.

5 out of 5 stars like nothing I've ever read.......2001-07-04

There's no shortage of originality in Peter Brooks' recent foray into the confessional act. Indeed, "Troubling Confessions" is a kind of sui generis text on the place of confession in Western Culture, and as such it bears absolutely no resemblance to other and earlier critical treatments of confessional literature. What's remarkable, looking back on the rich tradition of literary and cultural scholarship that came out of Yale during the 70s and 80s, is that nobody even *thought* to broach exactly these questions. That a work so plainly underivative should appear now, after the long and arid years during which the Yale school had grown into a pale and emaciated shadow of its former self -- well, it gives one pause. And one could justifiably argue that this is the effect of Brooks' oeuvre as a whole, which, if read cover to cover, induces the kind of silence from which even the keenest intellect can scarcely be roused.

5 out of 5 stars Speaking No Ill of Speaking Guilt.......2001-05-19

Those with an interest in law and literature have awaited this book, and for them there should be no disappointment. From a variety of perspectives, Brooks reflects on the extraordinary value that Western culture places on the act of confession, and the equally extraordinary problems that Western culture has assessing individual confessions. We want confessions, yet we are equally suspicious of them. Brooks' method for examining this cultural ambiguity is to juxtapose literary and legal traditions of confession (the religious tradition also receives significant attention). By juxtaposing these traditions, Brooks argues that we can better see the demands that are made of confession in Western culture, as well as the demands that confession, in turn, makes of us as members of social communities and as individuals. His interdisciplinary moves are skillful, his historical and legal glossings are accessible, and his readings of literary texts (and films) are smart. The chapters can be read individually, allowing the reader to jump around at will. Chapter 1 looks at how the Supreme Court has tried to address the problem of confession, primarily through Miranda. Chapter 2 looks at the relationship between the confessor to the confessant in various contexts -- law, literature, religion, psychoanalysis. Chapter 3 looks at the problem of the voluntary vs. the coerced confession with a close reading of Culombe v. Connecticut. Chapter 4 discusses how the religious tradition of confession affects modern understanding of identity and selfhood. Chapter 5 addresses the law's difficulty addressing psychoanalytic concepts of truth, identity, guilt, and victimhood. Finally, Chapter 6 sums things up by looking at what motivates or compels an confession at all. Among other literary works, Rousseau's Confessions, The Brothers Karamazov, Alfred Hitchcock's film I Confess, The Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man and Camus' The Fall make extended appearances. These texts are hardly obscure, and neither are the general outline or the finer points of Brooks' argument. Very helpful to anyone interested in confession, narrative and rhetoric, or the general relationship between law and literature.

1 out of 5 stars An understanding of Latin & French would help!.......2001-04-24

I am an editor and financial writer. In writing, you should do so simply, so that both the intellectual and unlearned man can understand and enjoy it. 50,000 books are written every hear, so you try and only have an opportunity to read the very best.

The author of troubling confessions is apparently taken with his own vocabulary, that few of us can understand. He lapses into phsycoanalytics and other words I can't even spell, much less decipher.

Peter Brooks talks about confessions in fictional works, that the average person never heard of, nor understands. Sprinkle in some french and latin, and you get the feeling Mr. Brooks wrote this book to impress a fellow nerd instead of relaying infomation to an interested reader.

Because of the constant switching from fiction, to non fiction, from english to other sayings in french and latin, the theme of the book is lost, with the reader simply trying to keep up with the writer, who with big $2 words, is always 2 steps ahead of him.

I have read a few books that I could not put down, but this one, I really struggled to finish. Better still would have been not to pick it up at all.

And that is my troubling confession!

                  Book Description

When Kathy Aaronson was eight years old, she set up a small roadside stand next to her family’s farm and began selling vegetables that weren’t up to supermarket standards (too small or too misshaped). Her entrepreneurial drive was sparked by a need to connect with people, and in the process of learning to sell successfully she learned about how to find and provide value to any type of customer. In The Golden Apple, Aaronson uses the lessons learned at her produce stand and applied later in executive sales to illustrate nine lessons that can help readers turn their careers and lives around. Using humor and practical, step-by-step guidance, this book will teach readers how to: get the attention of busy, distracted client prospects; how to do business confidently and well with anybody – even rude, crude client prospects; how to use stories to successfully sell products, services or ideas, and how to develop business relationships that will protect their careers in any economy. With the Golden Apple as their guide, readers will be confident they have the tools to make success easier than failure, in business and in life.

Kathy Aaronson, originally from New Hampshire, is the founder and CEO of the executive recruitment and sales training firm, The Sales Athlete, Inc., with offices in Los Angeles and New York City. A nationally recognized expert on executive sales, Kathy helps companies increase revenue and market share, and, for 30 years, assisting individuals in finding career happiness and wealth.

5 out of 5 stars a great source of wisdom.......2004-02-28

Golden harvest contains the words of wisdom spoken by White Eagle through the mediumship of Grace Cooke. White Eagle speaks from a higher level of spiritual consciousness than we have attained, having reached that level after the same struggle that each of us must pass through. Based on the teachings of Jesus, White Eagle gives us knowledge and advice with love and compassion in full knowledge of the difficulties we have to deal with every day. Each of us is a child of God having within us the potential of Christhood. We must not devote too much time to material things but make our prime goal seeking the Kingdom of God. We are here on earth to gain spiritual awareness and God-consciousness. It is the act of living with our fellow man that brings us wisdom. We have to control and discipline our desires and emotions and to rise above the limited consciousness of our physical life.

If we are to serve we have to be able to withstand pressure and be well tested so we don't break down under stress. Each time we are tested and stand up to it, we advance along the path. Words alone are not enough; we need to provide practical service to humanity even if it means dealing with a person to whom we are not drawn. We have to learn to live as a center of love, compassion and good will to all creatures and to keep our thoughts good, constructive and loving. We have to control our thoughts and emotions. Many times we will face injustice but God has led us there for a purpose. In all situations we are challenged to show love. Without the temptations and challenges that life brings, the spirit of Christ in us could never develop. Making our lives easier would prevent us learning lessons.

Our thoughts should always be positive because what we think today we will become tomorrow. If we want a better world, we must start to create it now. We can influence countless lives if we hold firmly to the right course. We should not look for our reward in material and earthly terms but in spiritual terms. Every time we think lovingly, kindly, and constructively and help our fellow man, we progress along the path of love and sow good karma. We have to learn spiritual law by right living, right thinking and right action. We must be on the look out for the meaning behind every event and welcome every experience.

When the soul is still and peaceful we can hear the voice within the heart. To hear it, learn to be still. This deep inner peace is the source of all our strength and guidance. From the heart of peace comes right action but we must separate ourselves from worldly thoughts and desires. Nothing but our own thoughts and feelings can separate us from Him. Our life on earth is over burdened with activity. We must learn to become aware of the inner life, the place of spirit deep within us. When you go to sleep at night let your last thought be of praise and thankfulness to God. Keep your thoughts always fixed upon the good, the true, the beautiful God-life. We are careless with our thoughts in the belief that we can hide them from others. But in the realms of spirit there is no hiding of thoughts. All thoughts are known so keep them pure. Whatever problem lies before you can be solved by love; the way to work is always by love and never by force in any shape or form. No man must force his own individual views on other men. To love them is the only way to win them.

If these words strike a chord in your heart, with this book you will draw on a source of great wisdom.
