    Book Description

In this critique of conventional economics, Ladislau Dowbor rejects both old-fashioned statist economics and utopian "post-economics" ideas of social organization. Instead, he pulls together a rich mixture of detailed and practical conclusions about economic and social policy, drawing on his own work as an economic adviser in countries as diverse as Poland, Portugal, Guinea Bissau, post-Soviet Mongolia, Sandinista Nicaragua, democratic South Africa and President Lula's Brazil.

4 out of 5 stars Great Outline - Low on Detail.......2005-10-17

This book was great in that it covered a number of issues and topics that I otherwise would have absolutely no clue about. It's only downside is that each topic had only surface detail. It's a great outline though - you can always dig deeper with other resources.

5 out of 5 stars No-nonsense advice about serious money matters.......2003-07-17

Collaboratively written by Carol Ann Wilson and Ginita Wall (professional specialists in marital and divorce finance issues), ABCs Of Divorce For Women is a very straightforward and practical guide specifically intended for women who are having to navigating the complexities and financial pitfalls of divorce in America. Individual chapters discuss and explain matters such as alimony and maintenance, child support, property division, tax issues, and a great more. The no-nonsense advice about serious money matters make ABCs Of Divorce For Women an absolute "must-read" for any woman going through the complex emotional, financial, and legal processes of separation or divorce.

      Book Description

The recent economic liberalization in developing countries is making many sectors succumb to new competitive pressures. Governments face the dilemma of how to help firms compete without falling back into failed dirigiste policies. Based on recent findings of importance of the inter-firm cooperation, public-private collaboration and local policies in boosting competitiveness, this book analyzes how these elements explain the new dynamism of two agroindustrial sectors in Argentina and Chile, dairy and fresh fruit respectively.

Sample Story Summaries: #1 Aug 1993 Stowaway On their way back to class from Dax's lab, Jake and Nog detour through the cargo holds and accidentally release a green mold. Renowned xenoarcheologist, Dr. Wembley, aboard a visiting Federation starship, asks DS9 to store some artifacts from the Gamma quadrant for transport to Earth. O'Brien takes the artifacts to the cargo bay and is nearly overcome by the rapidly reproducing mold, which also produces a toxic gas. While Odo and his staff try to evacuate contaminated areas, Bashir must figure out what the mold is and how to destroy it. #3 Oct 1993 Old wounds Gul Trelar, born on Bajor, once known as "The Butcher of Bajor", and now an old man, arrives at DS9 to acknowledge his approaching death. Travelling with Trelar are his children and second wife, a Bajoran who was once his prisoner. At his own request, Trelar stays in one of Quark's holosuites, so that his mother and childhood home can be simulated. At dinner with DS9 officers, Trelar collapses, Bashir administers medication, and he is left alone in the holosuite to rest. The following morning, Trelar is found stabbed to death, and there is no record of anyone entering the holosuite. Nearly everyone is a suspect. Odo uses his shapeshifting skills to conduct an investigation. #4 Nov 1993 Emancipation While collecting biological samples in the Gamma quadrant, Dax and Bashir encounter an alien vessel carrying refugees in need of medical assistance. Once they arrive at DS9, it becomes apparent that the refugees are slaves, fleeing their owners. Rogon, a representative of the Chiaran people, arrives at DS9 to reclaim the runaway slaves. The DS9 crew stalls while Sisko tries to come up with a valid reason to offer asylum to the slaves.

                      Book Description

Industry analysts forecast that worldwide IT spending is approaching two trillion dollars. In market after market, the current tech downturn not withstanding, sales forces are gearing up to attack this global gold mine. The only problem is, the game has changed, and, winning sales in the digital economy will cause you to think differently or suffer the consequences. It used to be that sales managers who could put together the right people with the right products and the right sales methodology could win sales deals most of the time. Unfortunately, that formula, even in the best of circumstances, has never translated into much better than a thirty percent success rate. Drawing on todays business thinking on corporate cultures, technology marketing, core competencies and his own extensive research, Porter takes us in Seller' s Edge deeply into buyer psychology in today' s B2B global marketplace. From the twists and turns of the sales decision process to the quirky cultures of corporate buyers , Porter offers us a practical sales tool for the new economy. Seller' s Edge takes a fresh new look at how global corporations make million dollar sales decisions. In his new Sellers Edge Model, Porter defines and describes the six specific cultures - Need, Price, Future, New, Easy, Brand - founded on price sensitivity and risk where Buyers align today with Sellers when making a final buying decision. Strange as it may seem, there are some buyers who would not accept a product from the wrong seller even if they gave it away - the market is just that polarized!

Porter offers today' s sales organization practical tips and insights into picky Buyers in the new digital economy. From better understanding the four distinct phases of today' s sales decision process to exploring motives and buying signs of the Brand Buyer, he serves up example after example from real life sales situations that will ring true to sale professionals everywhere.

Finally, Porter offers a detailed seven-step approach to using the Seller' s Edge Model to increase your odds of success in a global marketplace that' s far different from just a few years ago. Limit your opportunities and sell more. The only way to do this is with an edge - the Seller' s Edge. The new economy sales tool from William Porter who gave you Quest for Loyalty six years ago, the best selling book about customer loyalty and CRM.

5 out of 5 stars Gaia to the Fore!.......2007-08-17

Plaza & Janes has a very popular pocket book collection: "Reno". It is a great fortune for low-budget Spanish-speaking readers to have access to Asimov's sci-fi novels thru this series.
The late Isaac Asimov (1920 - 1992) is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi writers. He pertains to the old "hard sci-fi" school that populated the `50s and a successful member of that community by the way.

This story is the first step in the second "Foundation Trilogy". Pressed by editors and fan's claim, after almost twenty-five years Asimov reassumes his famous "Foundation Saga".
He maintains his traditional storytelling structure, approaching each character in separate chapters and following their paths until final convergence.
However this new trilogy is more dynamic than the original one and ties all Asimovians universes into a coherent one (Spacers, Empire, Foundation, Robots and Eternals).

The story is as follows: after the last great Foundation's crisis involving the Mule's disruption, occurred around 120 years before the present tale, events are realigned into Seldon's Path.
The "perfection" of this realignment disquiets young Councilman Trevize at Terminus, First Foundation's capital and young Speaker Gendibal at Trantor, Second Foundation secret capital. Both of them start a (forced) search that will lead them to uncover a new main mysterious player: Gaia.

This book is a landmark in Asimov's sci-fi career.
Enjoy his second disembarkment on Foundation shores!

                              Book Description

The first study in English on the subject, this volume explores the challenges facing Switzerland as the European Community (EC) moves toward the 1992 goal of a Europe without economic borders. The primary question addressed by the author is whether or not Switzerland can ultimately avoid becoming a full-fledged member of the EC. Rene Schwok fully explores the alternatives open to Switzerland, including marginalization and a "Third Way" between membership and marginalization, comparing the benefits and risks presented by each option. He examines the political and economic implications of full membership within the EC and analyzes Community rules and laws that are particularly relevant to Switzerland. Throughout, Schwok is careful to present a multifaceted approach which reflects both the economic and political issues confronted by Switzerland as the country struggles to reach a policy consensus regarding the EC. Schwok begins by exposing the source of Switzerland's current problem--the acceleration of the community integration process. He then analyzes the EC's attitude toward Switzerland and evaluates the role played by the European Free Trade Association, paying special attention to efforts to establish a "European Economic Space." By comparing the situation of Austria--which has exhibited much more interest in becoming a member of the EC--with that of Switzerland, Schwok sheds new light on Switzerland's reluctance to join. In discussing the effects of the European Internal Market on Switzerland, Schwok reveals the risks of marginalization should Switzerland decide not to join. He goes on to examine the Swiss government's proposed third option, analyzing both its prospects for success and its implications for the Swiss population. Finally, Schwok treats the long-term consequences of this option, asking whether it will allow sufficient proximity to the Internal Market to enable Switzerland to avoid membership or, on the contrary, serve only to pave the way for eventual membership in the EC. Students of international relations and European economics will find Schwok's work a well-reasoned and comprehensive study of Switzerland's choices as Europe approaches 1992.
