Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Useful and an interesting read!.......2005-09-29

The book is full of useful models, and interesting, real-life ancedotes. The book is divided into the different types of teams, so you can turn right to the chapter that fits your needs - pointing out that one size team approach does not fit all. I appreciated the chapter on global teams (ch 8).

5 out of 5 stars Key Ingredients to Successful Teams.......2004-12-17

The Driving Force does a wonderful job of describing why every leader should focus on nurturing teamwork. And then it offers a variety of valuable tools and assessments to help create an environment where teams can thrive and be successful. It's become a great reference tool for me already!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific for the Applied Consultant.......2004-12-11

I found this book to be full of real to me cases. The transfer of easy to use diagnostic tools then, to current client systems, is unprecedented! Very helpful and easy to read and apply!

5 out of 5 stars Great tips from an experienced consultant.......2004-12-05

This book is well organized and it is easy to find both experiences and tools for most any team situation. The experiences of those she writes about are helpful but the best features of this book are the guides, readiness questions, and other tools to see where your organization fits. I would recommend it to anyone who is working in a team environment, or someone who is thinking about starting a team. Knowing the "watchouts" before you begin a team is halfway to success.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2004-12-04

This book is not only an interesting read, but a great tool to add to your toolbox. Learning and applying the information given is beneficial not only to the individual, but also to the world in which they exist! Our university has begun using this book in classes in a wide range of areas, from Human Resources and General Business to Counseling and Student Affairs. The information is applicable to every field! I believe The Driving Force acts as an exceptional guide to making the ideals of the business world more attainable for both the customer and the business. It helps the reader to rediscover and restore the joy and purpose in their job. Great book all around--for both students and professionals.

Book Description

A March of Liberty: A Constitutional History of the United States, 2/e, is a clearly written, comprehensive overview of American constitutional development. Covering the country's history from the founding of the English colonies up through the latest decisions of the Supreme Court, this two-volume work presents the most complete discussion of American constitutional history currently available. Reflecting the latest in contemporary scholarship, the authors successfully blend cases and court doctrines into the larger fabric of American political, economic, and social history. They discuss in detail the great cases handed down by the Supreme Court, showing how these cases played out in society and how constitutional growth parallels changes in American culture. In addition, this two-volume set examines lesser-known decisions that played important roles in affecting change, and also contains in-depth analyses of the intellects and personalities of the Supreme Court justices who made these influential decisions. This second edition of A March of Liberty addresses recent scholarship on race and gender, covers both constitutional and legal history, and examines federal, state, and private law. The text exemplifies the current trends in American constitutional history through its holistic approach of integrating the decisions of the state and lower federal courts with the decisions of the Supreme Court. Volume I covers the colonial period up through Reconstruction and explores central rulings on property law, religious freedom, slavery, and women's rights. It also examines the need for a governmental system of checks and balances, lesser-known rulings on land and water usage, and impeachment and treason trials. A March of Liberty, 2/e, features useful supplemental materials including the text of the Constitution, a chronological list of Supreme Court justices, and suggested further readings. Gracefully written and clearly explained, this popular two-volume set is indispensable for courses in American constitutional history and law.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It's a textbook.......2007-02-13

As far as history textbooks are concerned, I like this one. Yes, it's dense, but it's dense subject matter. The book is a lot less dry than it could be. Yes, the book is biased, but that can lead to interesting class discussion (or just plain thought), especially if one reads other essays/books on the subjects.

I'm trying to imagine a better constitutional history textbook and I can't, though I will not claim to be an expert on history textbooks. At least this one gives plenty of information to understand the history that surrounds the Supreme Court cases. Everything's nice, connected, and easy to understand--if a bit dense.

1 out of 5 stars Booooring!.......2005-09-05

Avoid this book! It will kill your interest in US History. It is a bad attempt at summarizing the events which shaped the Constitution. While it made a good point at stressing the importance of our "British Heritage", especially when it comes to the legal system in our country, the author brought in too much of his own bias (as another reviewer has pointed out). I think the accompanying text to this book, Documents of American Constitutional and Legal History, is better. It at least lets you draw your own conclusions from original texts.

3 out of 5 stars A slightly skewed perspective.......2003-11-23

The completeness and comprehensiveness of this volume is commendable, however, there are some things that detract from its overall value as a text. Reading it, it is very easy to pick up the authors' blatant partisanship, with inumerable stabs at the current Presidential administration, and ideological interpretations of groups and viewpoints in history. This is dangerous, especially when used as a tool in colleges and universities. It is not the business of historians to tell students what to think about history; rather, it is their responsibility to present history in a non-biased form and allow debate and discussion, and permit students to draw their own conclusions. I find this is too often the case with modern history texts. If these discrepancies are repaired, it would be a fine text. But as I said, the text encompassed a vast amount of information, and was essentially complete in portraying the early republic.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of the Bill of Rights and the Courts........1997-10-03

Rossum and Tarr have enclosed, in a simple and easily used volume, a good examination of the important caselaw relating to the bill of rights. The authors' commentary is thoughtful and concise, and the edited cases are very accessible without being so edited as to remove the substance of the law. A fine book for anyone looking to introduce themselves to Constitutional Law.

        Book Description

THE BRAND GAP is the first book to present a unified theory of brand. Whereas most books on branding are weighted toward either a strategic or creative approach, this book shows how both ways of thinking can unite to produce a “charismatic brand”—a brand that customers feel is essential to their lives. In an entertaining two-hour read you’ll learn:
        • a new definition of brand

        • the five essential disciplines of brand-building
        • how branding is changing the dynamics of competition
        • the three most powerful questions to ask about any brand
        • why collaboration is the key to brand-building
        • how design determines a customer’s experience
        • how to test brand concepts quickly and cheaply
        • the importance of managing brands from the inside

Also see: THE BRAND GAP second edition, which includes a 220-term brand glossary and premium softcover binding.

        FROM THE BACK COVER

Not since McLuhan's THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE has a book compressed so many ideas into so few pages. Using the visual language of the boardroom, Neumeier presents the first unified theory of branding -- a set of five disciplines to help companies bridge the gap between brand strategy and brand execution. Those with a grasp of branding will be inspired by what they find here, and those who would like to understand it better will suddenly "get it." This deceptively simple book offers everyone in the company access to "the most powerful business tool since the spreadsheet."

"Finally, a book that cuts to the heart of what brand is all about -- connecting the rational and the emotional, the theoretical and the practical, the logical and the magical to create a sustainable competitive advantage. Everyone in the company should read this book, not just the three people with 'brand' in their titles." --Susan Rockrise, Worldwide Creative Director, Intel

"A pleasure to read. THE BRAND GAP consistently provides deep, practical insights in a light, visual way. Discover the power of imagery and the role of research in building a heavy-duty brand -- without the heavy-duty reading." --David Aaker, Author of "Brand Leadership" and "Building Strong Brands"

"Neumeier stands out among brand-savvy professionals. His experience as a designer, writer, and strategist lends realism to his five disciplines of brand-building. Anyone who needs a deeper understanding of the creation, management, and evolution of brands should grab this book with both hands and start reading." --Patrick Fricke, Manager of Print and New Media Design, Kodak

"This is not just another book on brand. This is the only book you'll need to read in business, engineering, and design school." --Clement Mok, Design enterprenuer/President of AIGA

"THE BRAND GAP is an original. It describes the full range of creative interdependencies that need to be managed in concert, but in a language so plain, crisp, and simple that you suddenly 'see' the concept of brand--and can act boldly on it." --Peter Van Naarden, Director of Global Brand for Hewlett-Packard Co.

"THE BRAND GAP couldn't be more timely. Just when we're at our most skeptical about corporate motives, along comes a book that shows how to evaluate and develop a brand in a straightforward and honest manner." --David Stuart, Brand Designer and Co-Founder of The Partners, London

"This is an important work, with just the right level of accessibility. Despite our overexposure to brand theory these days, THE BRAND GAP is the first book that seems fresh and relevant." --Richard Grefe, Executive Director, The American Institute of Graphic Arts

"A well-managed brand is the lifeblood of any successful company--and Neumeier shows us exactly how to do it. Read this book before your competitors do!" --Tom Kelley, General Manager of Ideo/Author of "The Art of Innovation"

        4 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2007-10-10

Of all the marketing books I have, this one makes the most sense. More than just quips and anticdotes, it is actual research and experience. I recommend it to my friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for ANYONE with a job... SERIOUSLY!.......2006-11-06

This is one of the best books ever written. It is insightful for consumers, for businesses, for marketing professionals and... well, anyone! It makes you think, it makes you see marketing and advertising in a whole new way, and it will make you smarter - period. I think this should be mandatory reading in high schools across the world.

Do not attempt to be a web designer, an advertising professional, or an enterpreneur until you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars shortest treatise on branding .......2006-09-01

in existence, that still tells most important things about branding you need to know.
It said nothing new to me, but then again I have read the authors and branding / positioning gurus Marty Neumeier mentions and quotes plus two dozen other books on branding and strategy.
So instead of doing it the hard way, like I did, you CAN actually find out most you need to know about branding from this rather small book during a three hour flight.
One thing I don't like about this book is its "look and feel", layout and fonts.
Its like the author wanted to be SO COOL and innovative SO BAD that he took it overboard. I found it annoying, not cool at all.

4 out of 5 stars Good read, makes you think.......2006-08-18

Brand Gap was a quick airplane read. It's layout and common sense language made it an easy read. The book had very good points about brands versus logos and some real world mistakes that companies make. I read the book four weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it! Somewhat shotty construction, though - my book binding fell apart.

5 out of 5 stars Full of information, very insightful.......2006-08-13

This is a delightful little book, easy to read, in easy to understand langauage.

More importantly, it is very insightful. One of the biggest problems in marketing is the concept that buying is a rational decision. Neumeier makes it easy to understand that the first step in the buying process is emotional connection. This concept is not new. As Neumeier quotes Ben Franklin, "Would you persuade, speak of interest, not reason."

The author makes a good case for importance of marketing (rational) and advertising (creative) working together to make 1 + 1 = 11. He also show the way of the future for busniess with bringing together teams of the best in field rather than trying to employ all under on roof. He takes a lesson from Hollywood to demonstrate this concept.

His insight into the misuse of focus groups is worth the price of the book times ten.

All in all you will find this book delightful to read and very insightful in many different facets of busiess. He does not bore you with the details and therein lies a bit of danger - that many people will miss some valuable concepts. It should be read often to keep the ideas and concepts fresh in mind.

                  1 out of 5 stars Greatly disappointed.......2002-06-19

This book was a waste of my time, fortunately it was only 37 pages. At [item price] I could have bought 3 Star Buck Frappachinos instead.
