Book Description

M. A. Adelman is one of the preeminent authorities on the economics of mineral resources. This book brings together his work, written over the past thirty years, on mineral depletion and the nature of monopoly in world oil. Organized into three groups, the twenty-seven papers cover theory and measurement of mineral scarcity and depletion, analysis of the OPEC cartel and control of the oil market, and public policy problems and options.

M. A. Adelman is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Economic students are taught that banks "create" money every time they make a loan, and that the economy is powered by money instead of energy. The juxtaposition of these two data (the first is true, the second is false) leads even Nobel Prize-winning economists to conclude they have discovered a perpetual-motion machine:

"Should we be taking steps to limit the use of these most precious stocks of society's capital so that they will still be available for our grandchildren? . Economists ask, Would future generations benefit more from larger stocks of natural capital such as oil, gas, and coal or from more produced capital such as additional scientists, better laboratories, and libraries linked together by information superhighways? ... in the long run, oil and gas are not essential." [ p. 328, ECONOMICS, Nobel Laureate Paul Samuelson and William Nordhaus; McGraw-Hill, 1998;(...)

No person has had a greater influence on the thinking of experts who have become government regulators of the world's oil and gas industries than economist Morris Adelman: "There are plenty of fossil fuels and no limit to potential electrical capacity. It is all a matter of money." [ p. 483, THE ECONOMICS OF PETROLEUM SUPPLY, by M. A. Adelman; MIT, 1993; (...)

But of course, economists like Samuelson, Nordhaus, and Adelman are wrong. The First and Second Laws of thermodynamics tells us there is a limit to potential electrical capacity -- it's not all a matter of "money", it's all a matter of "energy".

The sudden -- and surprising -- end of the fossil fuel age will stun everyone -- and kill billions. Once the truth is told about gas and oil (it's just a matter of time), your life will change forever

Envision a world where freezing, starving people burn everything combustible -- everything from forests (releasing CO2; destroying topsoil and species); to garbage dumps (releasing dioxins, PCBs, and heavy metals); to people (by waging nuclear, biological, chemical, and conventional war); and you have seen the future.

Envision a world utterly destroyed by a lethal education.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best there is on oil econ.......2001-05-07

If you know anything of significance about the economics of petroleum, the name M. A. Adelman will already be familiar. If you know nothing and want to learn, this book is the place to start; it will take you a very long way.

Even though some of the papers in this book are approaching their 40th birthdays, all remain fresh and relevant. Adelman virtually invented the serious study of petroleum economics and even his earliest insights are worthwhile.

This book is also essential reading for anyone interested in the economics of resources more broadly. While I don't think that Adelman has spoken quite the last word on the so-called Hotelling theory of the economics of "exhaustible resources", he makes far more sense on the subject than most of his colleagues.

It also has much that is of value to students of non-petroleum commodities. Petroleum is a very special kind of commodity, but there are many lessons from it that apply elsewhere. Anyone still tempted by the notion of the benificent price-stabilizing cartel -- the UNCTAD model -- should read and ponder what Adelman has to say about how OPEC actually has (mal)functioned.

Adelman's style can be a bit quirky and discursive, but never obscure or dry. It's a big book because there's so much in it, not because it's padded out with academic belaborings. There is a little repetition becuase it's a collection, but not too much.

Much may at first seem somewhat strange. That's simply because Adelman's facts and analysis don't support a lot of conventional wisdom about petroleum. Don't be put off by the contradictions. You'll find everything documented and referenced, so you can decide for yourself where Adelman's facts come from. (Moreover, he usually summarizes the positions he's attacking clearly and fairly.) Look at what he has to say and measure it against what you may have assumed or been led to believe. Even if you don't come to agree with him on every point, I think you'll find everything he says to be illuminating and stimulating.

      Book Description

"The Irving case has done for the new century what the Nuremberg tribunals or the Eichmann trial did for earlier generations." --The Daily Telegraph

In British historian David Irving's libel suit against Penguin Books and Deborah Lipstadt, charging that Lipstadt's book, Denying the Holocaust (1993) falsely labeled him a Holocaust denier, the question about the evidence for Auschwitz as a death camp played a central role. The defense engaged Robert Jan van Pelt to prepare an expert report presenting the evidence for our knowledge that Auschwitz had been an extermination camp where up to one million Jews were killed, mainly in gas chambers. Employing painstaking historical scholarship, van Pelt submitted an exhaustive forensic report, which helped win the day for the defense. Van Pelt's book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the Holocaust and for those who seek to combat Holocaust denial.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional contribution to Holocaust understanding.......2007-01-15

Robert Jan Van Pelt's contribution to helping win the Irving trial can only be matched by the excellence of "The Case for Auschwitz." I have read extensively about the Holocaust over the past twenty years, and heard about this book in Krakow, Poland two months ago. My wife and I visited the camps, where she was born, and other WWII Jewish sites during that trip. Having recently seen Auschwitz I, II, and III first hand with an excellent guide, I was prepared with high expectations to learn new insights when I opened up this book.

My expectations were exceeded. In fact, this contained much of the trial content and interpretations that I was expecting in the Deborah Lipstadt book that she authorized after the trial. Having heard her speak in Chicago four days after the trial, she shared a number of fascinating experiences related to the trial and getting the guilty verdict that were all missing from her book. What this author has done is capture a wealth of fascinating facts, verbatim transcript portions of what various witnesses said at the trial and rebuttals, and lots more about Auschwitz II and its management. Everything about this work makes for fantastic reading...and on many levels. The illustrations and photos are meaningful and the final chapter is particularly memorable. For someone who wants to know what really went on in the trial, its meaning, the tactics of the twisted minds of Holocaust deniers and specifically why their denial premise gets a following, this is a true value for the cost.

      5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading.......2007-01-10

You would like to think that one of the central historical events of the 20th century would be beyond dispute, but nevertheless some manage to deny the holocaust.

In 2000, Holocaust denier David Irving sued Deborah Lipstadt and her publishers Penguin Books in the High Court for libel, and Robert Jan van Pelt was called as an expert witness for the defence. Essentially, his task was to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the court that the facts related by Lipstadt in Denying the Holocaust were, to the best of current knowledge, true.

This book relates how van Pelt came to be called upon for this role, his researches and preparation for the trial, followed through with the story of how the trial itself went; from opening statements to Irving's eventual defeat.

On the way, the available evidence is thoroughly examined and assembled into a coherent narrative of the appalling events at the Auschwitz death camp. Arguments and evidence presented by Holocaust deniers is dissected, and their errors exposed in clear, logical prose.

This book is not cheap, but thorough and densely packed it is nonetheless good value.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.......2004-04-23

Shermer and Grobman's _Denying History_ whetted, but did not completely satisfy, my appetite to learn more about the historical evidence for the Holocaust, so I bought and read van Pelt's book. I know that in this book van Pelt covers only a portion of the information that was in his reports for the Irving trial, but it was certainly enough to convince me that Judge Gray's verdict was the proper one. This book covers a lot of technical information that would possibly be hard to digest or be boring if it were presented by another author, but van Pelt writes very well, and I had trouble setting his book down. The author comes across as a very reasonable figure who is able to resist the urge to over-rely on either sentimentality or sarcasm. Perhaps I will need to read something else to internalize the horror that was the Holocaust, but I don't need to read anything else to see that it really did happen.

Finally, let me say that I was unprepared for what a big, handsomely bound, handsomely typeset book this would be. (I know that talking about the attractiveness of a book about the Holocaust is probably as bad as Jerry Seinfeld making out during "Schindler's List", but I figured that there might be some other bibliophiles out there who care about such things.)

5 out of 5 stars One of many good books.......2004-03-19

This is one of many good books on the Irving trial in which a holocaust denier was allowed, because of englands biased legal system, to sue an author for libel only because she referred to him as what he was, a holocaust denier. This book is not the best on the subject but it does a job job of explaining the farce of Irvings moronic statements. At one point in the trial Irving even referred to the Judge as 'mein Fuhrer', comical and amazingly disturbing.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2003-06-19

The trial transcripts are available on line (for free!!!!!). Imagine that, you can get an unbiased take on the evidence! Van Pelt gives very compelling testimony (unlike some of the other highly paid "witnesses" for the defense) but why pay him again for it?

                  Book Description

A quiet, but powerful revolution is underway. as the Internet and TV worlds converge; corporations are becoming increasingly interested in creating their own corporate TV networks. One of the biggest reasons for this push is the desire to communicate with customers, offer them helpful friendly advice and in so doing, build a relationship of trust. Unfortunately, TV content and corporate content are vastly different. Corporate content is usually dry and typically delivered by a single subject matter expert in a speech or training program. Conversely, TV content is based on story telling, entertaining and informative story packages and is based on a variety of messengers, including heroes, luminaries, and experts. Succeeding in this brave new world may be easier said than done. In order to thrive, corporations must learn three things: how to create content that focuses on what the audience wants to learn, not what you want to sell, how to use the right media and technology to leverage that content, and how to use it effectively in marketing programs. This book teaches corporate communicators how to do exactly that.

                    Book Description

When the Euro was introduced in the EU, the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) was one of the cornerstones of the architecture of fiscal policy in the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). But the discussion about the necessity and functioning of the specific SGP fiscal rule never stopped since then. The call for a reform of the pact got momentum since many Member States of the euro area broke the regulations of the pact at least once. The reform of the SGP succeeded in 2005.

In this book, renowned lawyers and economists from all over Europe present their views about the legal and economic foundations of the SGP and its performance so far. The major part of the book deals with the economic problems with the pact, its theoretical basis, possible improvements and the implications of the reformed SGP. The book has the advantage not only to report and analyze the experiences with the old SGP but it offers also a first ex ante assessment of the future aspects of the reformed SGP.

These and other highly relevant issues make this book indispensable for everybody who is concerned with European integration and the functioning of EMU in particular.

                        Book Description

This books analyses in four parts some of the major aspects of the unique architecture of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) of the European Union. The first part deals with the problems of the institutional set-up of the EMU: the legal position of the European Central Bank; the excessive reserves in the Euro system; the "Maastricht conformity” of the public undertakings. The asymmetric architecture of the EMU (centralised monetary policy and decentralised fiscal policy; policy coordination; the stability and growth pact) is analysed in part two. The third part covers the monetary aspects of the EMU: the monetary policy of the ECB; the technical aspects of the specific payment system in the ESCB; the role of the Euro as an international currency and the explanations of its weakness. The concluding part looks at the problems connected with EU enlargement: are the candidate countries really ready for the EMU (degree of business cycle conformity); the problems of the banking system in the CEECs.

                          Book Description

In this engaging book, Christian Comeliau argues that any attempt to understand the historical logic of modernity as a social system must start with the economy. His exploration focuses on the dominant position of market economies in the social system. He examines contemporary phenomena such as the idea of indefinite growth as the mainspring of development, the intensification of social inequality and the future of work, difficulties resulting from globalization and international trade, and questions regarding the future role of the state.
