    Book Description

Real Rape, Real Pain is a book may make you feel uncomfortable, in that it tackles the violence and unpleasantness of rape within marriage; it forces us to confront the hidden violence in our society. It challenges the silence and secrecy about marital rape. As the authors say, "Violence is about using power and control, not about being out of control. There is no excuse for marital violence ever." The aims of the book are changing the rape culture and helping survivors. Chapters cover identifying rape in marriage, women at risk, staying with a partner who has raped you, sexuality after partner rape, a safety plan, and numerous other issues related to partner rape. As American author Monika Ostroff says, "Real Rape, Real Pain is the compassionate, loving friend that reaches into the darkness to the sufferer of partner rape, offering hope and help for a healthy life, free from violence. A wise teacher, this book will inform everyone from professionals working in the field to family members of women being victimized to politicians who are empowered to make the necessary changes to ensure safety on all our behalves. This book is a beacon of light that illuminates a dark, misunderstood yet incredibly common phenomenon of violence. It is a must-read for every survivor, family member, clinician, and politician!"

    5 out of 5 stars Real Rape...Real Pain...busts the myth wide open.......2006-10-09

Real Rape...Real Pain...busts the myth wide open...that in fact women that are involved with an abusive partner...do indeed get raped...and just because it does happen in marrages, relationships, it is still a fact that is true. And that rape can happen any where...to anyone at any time. Rape is not just defined to being attacked on the street.

The authors, and thirty survivors share some painful memories, sharing their stories, their courage. The authors do focus on alot of things...starting with society...and how it has shaped how men treat women...that we actually perpetuate the myth...that rape doesn't happen at home...when it fact it does.

One of the chapters that I found the most interesting...was how vulnerable we are, and why get involved with the people...abusers. This dates back to the kind of environment that you've grown up around...which again, could've been abusive, alcohol...sexual abuse, fighting, arguing...again, making the survivors...unknowningly think that they either didn't deserve any better, or that it was all that they knew?

This is a powerful read, and this resource should be available in every RCC center around the world. Every Library should have it...

Its informative...giving information for leaving an abusive relationship to the step that you take...to even if you choose to stay...

What is really focused through out the entire book, is what the survivor thinks about herself...that is emphasized in every chapter...to remember that its the abuser...and not the abused...and to stay positive...even in those crappy times...to pamper one self. And to remember that you are never defined by what happened to you.

    A must read...for every one.

5 out of 5 stars At last! A book that tells it like it is...........2006-08-21

Real Rape, Real Pain is a must have for any individual working in the allied health professions or ministry. Easteal and McOrmond-Plummer have blended the voices of real women on the journey of healing after being raped by their male partners. Between the stories which enable the reader to see how the stages of recovery occur differently with each survivor.

The last three chapters are a pure joy to read. The authors discuss reclaiming healthy sexuality, self-esteem and physical intimacy. Easteal and McOrmond-Plummer provide tips for secondary survivors, how to educate children and call churches to speak out against rape for what rape is: a sexual crime against an individual. This book is a must have for both a woman who is struggling with the aftermath of rape by her partner and those individuals who are courageous enough to sit with the woman on her journey.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - thoroughly recommend this book.......2006-08-14

Real Rape, Real Pain draws on the voices of women from across the globe to expose, demystify and provide answers to surviving partner rape. The subject of rape within relationships, a difficult and rarely talked about form of violence, is tackled head on by these authors and they triumph in their task. Personal testimonies, forming the spine of the text, make this book readily accessible by everyone from women experiencing partner rape to those providing assistance and support - counsellors and therapists included. The book's evolution, from identifying the abuse to accessing support, is thoroughly researched with excellent references and resources. Compassionate, wise and practical this book is an invaluable work that provides real answers and has the potential to create powerful change.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for survivor's of partner rape.......2006-08-08

Though I have yet to read the entire book (it's on it's way), my story is one of the survivor stories included. This book is powerful and poingnant. It is blunt and very matter of fact. It is an inside look into partner/marital rape and cuts to the core. Not only for married survivor's of rape, but date rape or rape by any "known" assailant. Many years, and hard work went into this book for the author's and has been long awaited by all those who participated, contributed in all forms and all who are anxious to read the finished product. Those looking for answers, solace of some form...or just to know that they are NOT alone in their pain. Healing comes and this book is evidence. This book is for the survivor's, but also their families & friends, who may need to "know" or who are curious as to what we had to endure. This book is for you, the victim, right now, who needs to know you are not alone, that there is help, there is healing.
There is hope. A MUST READ.

3 out of 5 stars the clinton-clinton-Broaddrick kind of rape, according to Susan Estrich.......2005-10-25

Susan Estrich is the Democrat political operative who put Dukakis in a tank and would put hillary in the White House. Amazon.com sales rank suggests another tank for Susan: Following her sales pitch on Hannity and Colmes tonight, her book, 'The Case for Hillary Clinton,' went from bad to worse, (It instantly sustained a 10% decline to #8517. As I type this, it is #12,244.)

Ms. Estrich also wrote 'Real Rape,' a book about the clinton-clinton-Broaddrick kind of rape. But that was before she was tapped by the clinton machine to cover for... and revise the predatory history of... a couple of real rapists.

'Simple rape' is what the system calls this clinton kind of rape... Simple as opposed to aggravated. 'Simple rape,' a horrendous misnomer that only perpetuates the injustice. 'Real Rape' is what Ms. Estrich called it. But, as I said, that was before she was tapped by the clintons.

"In the cases on which this book focuses, the man is not the armed stranger jumping from the bushes--nor yet the black man jumping the white woman, the case that was most likely to result in the death penalty prior to 1977, and the stereotype that may explain in part the seriousness with which a white male criminal justice system has addressed 'stranger' rape. Instead the man is a neighbor, an acquaintance, or a date. The man and the woman are both white, or both black, or both Hispanic. He is a respected bachelor, a student, a businessman, or a professional. He may have been offered a ride home or invited in. He does not have a weapon. He acted alone. It is, in short, a simple rape."
    --Susan Estrich, 'Real Rape'

In 'simple rape,' the system invariably revictimizes the victim and protects the rapist.
This horrible perversion of justice was the impetus for her book, so, of course, Ms Estrich knows exactly what is going on here between the clintons and Broaddrick.
Worse still, Ms. Estrich uses the horror of her own purported rape to obfuscate the casuistry and rapelies required to spin yet another rapist presidency. Estrich is contemptible.

This is the usual clinton rube arrogance rooted in stupidity.

The clintons figured that Estrich in their corner would make clinton serial rape and predation just disappear, not understanding that her presence would only intensify the scrutiny and that her 'expertise' and prior utterances would be used against them... and her.

Indeed, by twisting her own scholarship, Estrich indicts the clintons just as surely as the twisting double helix on that blue Gap dress.

Estrich's reaction to Juanita Broaddrick is the typical opportunistic, dishonest feminist reaction.
(See Salon.com article, 'Salon Mothers Who Think: We believe you, Juanita (we think).' Also: Google 'Did he rape that woman, Juanita Broaddrick?')

While most, if not all of the women who contributed to the salon.com piece believed Juanita, (liberals as well as conservatives), some feminists were in denial; they conveniently relied on false premises to assuage the cognitive dissonance.

One recurring false premise: although Juanita was credible, clinton couldn't be a rapist because he never raped before (or since).

Notwithstanding the fact that not all rapists are serial rapists, did they never hear of Eileen Wellstone et al?
(Google: 'Juanita isn't the only one: Bill Clinton's long history of sexual violence against women dates back some 30 years')

    Shame on them.

"Who is Juanita Broaddrick? I've never heard of her!" cried Betty Friedan, the founder of modern feminism. Friedan's outburst came at last Friday's conference, entitled "The Legacy and Future of Hillary Rodham Clinton." Held at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington. D.C., the event offered a chilling microcosm of an angry, divided America.

"For nearly an hour, a five-woman panel had been debating whether Hillary qualified as a "feminist heroine." I thought Broaddrick's claim of having been raped by Hillary's husband had some bearing on this point, so I broached the subject during the question-and-answer period. Friedan's dyspeptic denial followed.

"Was Friedan telling the truth? Maybe. And maybe all those millions of Germans who professed ignorance of the death camps were telling the truth too. The problem is, having admitted her ignorance, Friedan showed no interest in exploring the matter further. And that was the problem with the Germans too.

"Totalitarian impulses flourished at the conference. Taking a page from Soviet psychiatry, some Clintonites suggested that Hillary hating might be a mental illness.
    --Richard Poe, "The Hillary Conspiracy"

HANNITY'S ESTRICH INTERVIEW: THE CLINTONS' RAPE OF BROADDRICK

While Sean Hannity correctly went directly to one of the issues that should automatically disqualify missus clinton for any position of power, the clinton rape of Juanita Broaddrick, he sabotaged his own line of attack.

Hannity's setup question, whether hillary 'believed' bill, was a dodge. And a not very artful one, at that. As Sean Hannity well knew, the issue isn't whether hillary 'believed' bill; the issue is whether hillary participated. In that rape as well as in all the other rapes and predations.

Hannity of all people should know this. He interviewed Broaddrick on precisely that point. Broaddrick described to him in shocking detail the meeting with hillary that occurred two weeks after the rape. hillary clinton went to that meeting for the express purpose of warning Broaddrick to keep her mouth shut. (She and the rapist entered the room, she approached Broaddrick (whom she had never met before) while a slinking rapist stayed behind, she proceeded to warn Broaddrick, she and the rapist immediately left.)

In Hannity's original Estrich-Broaddrick interview, he was honest about the real issue. But even then he ultimately failed because he neglected to expose the following clinton casuistry being spun by Estrich:

    1. the 'statute of limitation' on rape should apply to the clintons in the Broaddrick rape,

    2. the postmodern construction of 'rape,' i.e., the definition of rape is subjective, i.e., what is considered rape by the victim isn't necessarily considered rape by the rapist,

    3. the definition of rape has morphed over time, i.e., what is rape today wasn't necessarily rape in the '70s.

On point 1, the statute of limitation on rape applies in a court of law, not in the voting booth. The question we are deciding isn't whether the clintons should be thrown in the slammer (another matter for another day); the question is less onerous, (from the clintons' perspective, anyway): Do the clintons have the character to be president?

The reductio ad absurdum is Christopher Shays' comment, made after he viewed the Ford building evidence on the rape of Broaddrick: "I believed that he had done it. I believed her that she had been raped 20 years ago. And it was vicious rapes, it was twice at the same event." Asked if the president is a rapist, Shays said, "I would like not to say it that way. But the bottom line is that I believe that he did rape Broaddrick."

And yet Shays voted not to impeach. Purportedly because he asked the wrong question. ("Where was the obstruction of justice?") (Any cognitive dissonance Shays may have experienced rendering that verdict was no doubt assuaged by the political plum clinton gave to Mrs. (Betsi) Shays...)

And so we had two more years of the clinton Nano-Presidency. (Google: NANO-PRESIDENT: the danger of the unrelenting smallness of bill + hillary clinton) And with it, inexorably, 9/11. (Google: WHY DID BILL CLINTON IGNORE TERRORISM? Was it simply the constraints of his liberal mindset, or was it something even more threatening to our national security?)

Regarding points two and three: Juanita's bitten lip, swollen to twice its normal size, the hallmark of a serial rapist, is the obvious counterexample.

This book should be required reading for Susan Estrich.

    ADDENDUM:

Ignoring the facts of the case, ignoring the 'real rape' paradigm, indeed, ignoring her own writings on 'real rape,' Susan Estrich, on Hannity and Colmes, pimping for yet another rapist presidency, openly disputed that Juanita Broaddrick was raped by the clintons.

In response, Juanita Broaddrick has offered to meet with Susan Estrich to discuss the matter. Estrich turned her down, cold. (Google: SUSAN ESTRICH RESPONDS TO JUANITA BROADDRICK'S OFFER TO SPEAK ABOUT HER RAPE -- "not interested")

1 out of 5 stars Expose of drivel.......2005-10-14

Well now we know the truth about the perpetual liberal and hypocritical whiner.

OH MY - how touching that she uses the premis of 'simple rape': a man the victim knows--a date, ex-boyfriend, or estranged husband--bullies or tricks her into sex against her will, without brandishing weapons or breaking bones. Simple rape, Estrich argues, is still real rape and deserves punishment.

But, the nation watched her toss aside her "femiinist" convictions to stand as a protector accomplice for Bill Clinton and help besmerch the women he abused.

Knowing how terribly a rape can effect a woman I can only assume that her performance in enabling Clinton proves her to be a liar who fabricated a tale of her own rape to promote her own self!

This book is liberal fiction and should be discounted because it is founded on a lie. Estrich hijacks a horrible crime for the sake of self promotion and a political agenda of enforcing laws only when they are seen as necessary to fight a perceived enemy. --DISGUSTING DRIVEL

5 out of 5 stars Acquaintance rape is more real than stranger rape!.......2005-09-28

Excellent, important work. Far too many people still believe that most perpetrators of rape are strangers. Incest, date rape and acquaintance rape have not yet been recognized by the public as the daily reality of all women and men. This work inspired me to read Andrea Dworkin's INTERCOURSE. Thank you to all those who are brave enough to read, talk and educate others about REAL RAPE. My eternal gratitude goes out to Susan Estrich for her courage to tell it like it is!

5 out of 5 stars Still the best analysis of rape law available.......2003-01-10

Do not let the anti-feminist trolls put you off this book. It is not a polemic, and has no political agenda except to argue for long overdue changes in rape law. Estrich provides a detailed history of the development of rape law, showing the political and philosophical roots of a body of law that put the responsibility for controlling rape firmly on the shoulders of girls and women. As her review of the changes in rape laws shows, the changes instigated by women who knew the reality of rape were only partially successful in their goal of eliminating the underlying biases of the old laws.

This book should be read by anyone, male or female, who intends to go into a career in criminal justice or social services. I would also hope that legislators, who are charged with writing and revising laws, use this book to inform themselves about the toll that the old laws created for victims, the families of victims, and ultimately for society as a whole.

I have used this book in my graduate classes in criminal justice, and students respond to it enthusiastically.

5 out of 5 stars How the Legal System Victimizes Women Who Say No.......2000-08-13

This is a great book. A very factual analysis of laws pertaining to rape in the United States. Estrich points out that the male dominated legal system is reluctant to classify rape as violence, because their idea of violence is based on the sort of things that happen to men. Getting beaten up is violence, rape is just sex.

Estrich talks about many cases of women who attempted to take a rape case to court and lost because, for example, they didn't physically fight back for fear of being hurt by a much larger assailant, or because they were too scared to scream. Yet the legal system is all too ready to say that these terrified and victimized women "consented" -- to sexual attacks by strangers!

This is a powerful book, pointing out the need for revision of rape law.

This digital document is an article from Journal of Property Management, published by Institute of Real Estate Management on November 1, 1995. The length of the article is 1826 words. From the supplier: Residential leasing has become a high-risk job as a result of the public's easy access to the leasing office. Statistics show that the number of leasing consultants assaulted or raped has increased significantly since 1990. Given the vulnerability of these consultants, real estate managers must adopt measures that help prevent their employees from being victimized. Leasing consultants should be trained to establish personal body boundaries and to adopt body language that conveys confidence and assertiveness. According to an FBI official, assailants are more likely to victimize a person who looks defenseless or unassertive. Consultants should also be trained to be aware of their surroundings at all times. In addition, they must undergo self-protection training, which should cover verbal and physical self-defense methods, legal self-defense weapons, and security tactics.

                  Book Description

The theme of this book is that economic growth is key, but institutions and other national and subnational attributes matter as well. They are critical to explaining differences in social development and poverty reduction across countries and subnational areas that cannot be accounted for by growth alone. The book concludes that a more complete strategy needs to consider various institutional factors at the national and subnational levels to achieve rapid and sustained poverty reduction. Indeed, paying attention to these factors will benefit both growth and poverty reduction.

5 out of 5 stars insightful, practically effective, easy read.......2004-11-03

Traditional approach is for executives to define the strategy and for the middle management to follow through with execution and tactics. The authors describe that the more effective approach is for an executive to be on the front line working with the customers. This is because a strategy developed in relative isolation from customers is unlikely to leverage off of the company's positioning in the customer's mind. The executive's objective would be to identify the competitive mental angle or the position / niche his company holds in the customers mind. This leads to identifying a simple differentiating tactic. Examples include pizza delivery time (Domino's) or "we're #2; we try harder" (Avis). This approach becomes highly effective when the executive uses the simple winning tactic as a lightning rod to gather and focus the entire company's energy. This involves continuous improvements in processes, products, positioning towards the singular goal of penetrating deep into customer's mind via the beachhead that was initially identified. Contrary to most models, a strategy is developed from a winning tactic by seeking broad input from customers and a variety of stakeholders; however, execution, planning, and marketing are carefully controlled and coordinated in a precise military fashion to surgically deepen the penetration in a customer's mind. The emphasis is on fixing things within the organization to match the meaning already present in a customer's mind rather than spend a lot of resources ineffectively to change a customer's mind.

4 out of 5 stars Make a plan at another angle.......2002-02-18

I can learn a lot of insights from this book. It teaches us how to make a plan at another angle. Unlike the traditional top down approach that decide what to do (strategy) and then how to do it (tactics), Trout and Ries suggest that tactics dictate strategies, which is "Bottom up marketing".

As bottom up managers first find a tactic that will work in the mind and then build it into a strategy (they work from the specific to the general), it is easier for them to exploit new opportunities, which is different from the top down managers that they are limited in the existing market. But remember to focus on only one tactic! Do better with less!

Bottom up marketing also emphasizes on change in the organization so as to find new opportunities in the market. Unless there is change in name, product, service, price but not mind or market, any strategy is unlikely to be successful.

Throughout the book, examples are widely used to show us the success of organizations that conduct bottom up marketing and the failure of those who conduct top down marketing, making it easier to understand.

Read it and try to plan at another angle!

4 out of 5 stars Glass house strategy vs reality.......2001-10-15

Unlike "The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing", Bottom Up Marketing is not merely a re-hash of "Focus" and "Positioning".

The core focus of this book is the distinction made between strategy and tactics in marketing. A grand strategy is often created that is perfect and executed flawlessly - in the minds of those who create it - The details (tactics) will of course fall into place. This, contend the authors, is how many a marketing campaign is carried out, often without the smashing success expected.

Bottom-Up Marketing is just that, developing a marketing strategy from the bottom up. A successful strategy can be crafted only after the needs, wants, and minds of the consumers are understood. Once the opportunity is identified, tactics are developed to satisfy the need, focus and refine the actions of the company. Once a realistic picture emerges, a strategy can be created such that the entire organization can take the correct actions and take advantage of opportunities that actually exist.

Intelligence about the marketplace and opportunities presented within must come directly from the source, those on the front lines in touch with consumers. Strategy and resource allocation comes from the top.

It's a good book with a clear simple message, combined with a dash of Trout and Ries' humor.

4 out of 5 stars A nice book to be read but with limited new ideas.......2000-08-17

This book has only a couple of new ideas. The rest come from "Positioning". The concept of bottom-up is nice but I am not sure if that's a new concept or a redefinition on tactic and strategy. Obviously, either of tactic and strategy must work. Otherway, something is wrong. The idea of bottom-up could be stated as a redefinition of tactic (as the key competing concept) and strategy (as the modeling of the organization to be able to run and follow the tactic). If so, the flow is down-up. On the other hand, authors are too much focused on the mental positiong concept. Tactics (or strategies if you prefer) could arise from many other sources. I recommend reading "the mind of strategist" as another way of looking for competing striking concepts. All in all, this book is nice and easy to read and some ideas can be got from it. I specially enjoy its saying as "the road to a disaster is paved with improvements" or "most of the guys in the exciting fire line fall, while the others remain" (by the way, where do you prefer to be?). They comprise usefull advises for surviving within a company, or do you have a different goal?.

                                        Book Description

The failure of the Seattle trade ministerial in December 1999 to launch a new round of multilateral trade negotiations dealt a major blow to the World Trade Organization (WTO). The Seattle meetings exposed significant policy differences among the WTO member countries as well as shortcomings in the manner in which the WTO conducts its business and interacts with other international and nongovernmental organizations.

The WTO after Seattle analyzes the problems and challenges facing the trading system in the aftermath of the Seattle ministerial. Leading trade experts examine why it is in the interests of both developed and developing countries to reengage in new trade talks, and how such talks could promote world trade and economic development, reform WTO operations, and strengthen public support for the trading system. The volume presents balanced perspectives on world trade problems by authors from the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America, with recommendations on what needs to be done in key areas to launch new talks. The authors address the WTO's existing mandate to negotiate on agriculture and services, as well as how to handle new issues such as investment, competition policy, e-commerce, and trade-related environmental and labor issues. The editor, Jeffrey J. Schott, provides a comprehensive overview of the issues before the WTO and what needs to be done to begin a new round.

2 out of 5 stars poor apologists for rich men's club.......2005-10-01

The World Trade Organization's 1999 meeting in Seattle has already gone down in history as the Battle of Seattle. Instead of discussing international trade issues, the participants looked on in horror as gangs of protesters wrecked the center of Seattle. Instead of sipping coffee in Starbuck's, they watched as the rioters gutted every Starbuck's outlet they could find. For some reason that this weighty book does not fully explain, people who protest against the WTO seem to hate Starbuck's.

The Institute for International Economics, which published this book, is probably above such venalities. Its Board of Directors includes some of the world's most influential figures including Conrad Black, Miguel de la Madrid, Nigel Lawson, Lee Kwan Yew, Paul O'Neill, David Rockefeller, Paul Krugman, George Schulz and even Alan Greenspan himself. Taken as a group, they certainly know their way around the corridors of power.

That being so, it is a pity that they do not seem to be able to write well. The book is a rather turgid discussion of the issues that should have been aired at Seattle. Spokespeople for the United States, the European Union and the world's other major economic powers are each given a separate chapter to themselves. So too are such less than inspiring topics as intellectual property, anti-dumping legislation and electronic commerce. If nothing else, the book will suit economics professors looking for additional dull readings to inflict upon their unsuspecting students.

Only two chapters enliven this otherwise comatose book. Surprisingly enough perhaps, the first of these is by Hisamitsu Arai from Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). He begins by telling us that the Japanese delegation, like most others, had gone to Seattle with the best of intentions. The Japanese delegation, he tells us, went to Seattle, ready to debate the whole matrix of issues that are intertwined around international trade. The Japanese wanted to discuss not only the specific issues that concerned their American hosts but also the whole institutional and legal framework that continues to hold back international trade. MITI were intent on showing the United States some of the contradictions evident in their stance on a variety of issues. Whereas, for example, the United States objects to Japan and other countries dumping their products at below cost into the American market, Arai and his colleagues had evidence of 64 cases where the United States had dumped its own products into other market, Japan's included. MITI, whatever their faults may be, certainly do their homework.

As well as bringing up America's ambivalent attitude to its own shortcomings, Arai's chapter also raises another issue. That issue is Canada. He speaks of the Quadrilateral Group of Japan, the United States, the European Union and Canada. What is Canada, a very minor economic power doing in that august group and several others such as G7? Why Canada? Why not India for example?

Jayashree Watal, another contributor to this volume, would like to know. His contribution rails against the injustices mighty countries like his own India suffer from the great powers of Japan, the European Union and the United States as well as minnow powers like Canada. He sees the solution in putting development issues more to the center of future WTO debates.

But therein lies the rub. It would be nice if India could have as many outlets of Starbuck's, the Body Shop, McDonald's and Kingburger as mighty countries like Japan and the United States have. However, before such a thing can come to pass, India's per capital income would have to approach the levels pertaining in the United States, Japan and Europe. Because that is not likely to happen in the foreseeable future, trade referees like the WTO, turgid commentators like the Institute for International Economics and unfortunate targets like Starbuck's will continue to flourish. There are some important lessons failures in economics can teach us. Indonesia's ethnic and sectarian strife is a case in point. The WTO, along with the World Bank and the IMF, have a case to answer there. It would be nice if those bodies and the rent-a-mob Starbuck's haters who follow their meetings around addressed themselves to finding fair and equitable solutions to the seemingly intractable problems that eventuate when economic and other forces cause countries like Indonesia to implode. Books like this one that concentrate too much on hitting the right diplomatic keys and on not alienating any of their key sponsors only prolong the problems of global inequity they purport to address.
