      In current high technology, there has arisen the open source movement. One of its motivating chants is that "information wants to be free". But what about copyright, not just of source code, but of writings in general? The distributed nature of the Internet and the ease of exact digital copying has led to an undergoing reexamination of what copyright might mean in our time.

      This book helps by giving a historical perspective as to how copyright gained its current meaning. Rose traces copyright to the early 1700s. Which, in the history of civilisation, is relatively recent. Copyright revolves around the concept of author and authorial rights, which emerged then. Surprisingly to some, Shakespeare himself could never have claimed copyright of his writings, even if the concept had occurred to him. Most of his stories were not his original plots, but a brilliant rephrasing of plots handed down from the Middle Ages.

      Rose traces the development of copyright to the rise of a mass market for printed books. Because without a printing press, copyright is irrelevant, for there is little of material substance to levy royalties. book.

          I agree with Rush.

          This book does have a very useful list of headlines, opening sentences, and a knowledgeable section on envelope copy with illustrations...

          ..but the guy explains these things in such a bizarre vernacular and egotistical vibe that it was hard for me to feel any sort of enthusiasm as I was learning (or trying to). Maybe Lewis should've been a politician.

          If you want a sales letter book, I fully recommend Dan Kennedy's 'The Ultimate Sales Letter'. It's step by step, easily understandable, fun to read and teaches you everything Lewis does but much more. Your excitement will skyrocket. Kennedy's your Man.

          3 out of 5 stars Not what it could be!.......2002-07-01

          I won't presume to be critical of such a great copywriter as the author. But my reason for giving the book only 3 stars instead of five is because the entire book could have been so much more.

          The latter half of the book are "100 ways to start a sales letter". It ought to be a gold mine. It IS of value, but again, in nearly all of the illustrated "ways", Lewis illustrates how people foul them up; not in how they are used successfully.

          The same is true for the first part of the book. He helpfully offers actual samples of sales letters that he has received but spends most of his time mocking them and showing what's wrong. Certainly many of them deserve criticism but I wonder how much better the book would have been if Lewis had given examples of GOOD copy.

          I recommend the book. I was just disappointed that it continually focused on the negative instead of helping the reader with GOOD copy.

          Herschell Gordon Lewis -- one of the world's leading authorities on writing copy that sells -- has summed up the tricks of the trade learned through years of experience in this delightful, extremely useful book. I find myself referring to his book again and again when I'm stuck on finding the just the right opening for a direct mail letter. Lewis uses real-life examples of direct mail copy throughout the book, showing readers where it went wrong and how it could have been more effective. (After reading his book, you'll find yourself scrutinizing every piece of junk mail you receive, wondering what Lewis would have to say about it!) Best of all, Lewis's keen wit makes the book fun to read. I highly recommend it to anyone who writes direct mail.

            I have used Pride & Ferrel in an Intro to Mkt undergrad classes for numerous years at one of the universities where I teach. It is by far the best and user-friendly text for both student and professor. You will come away with a very good basis of basic marketing concepts. Great Examples & on-line updates are also available.

            This textbook is probably the best Marketing book I have read. The information is current (it is the 2000 edition), language is easy to understand and the photographs are wonderful. The book not only explained the subject of marketing, but also gave clear examples of all of the topics using products and companies that we as consumers encounter everday. The loose leaf format made the book less expensive than most of my other college books. I highly recommend that universities review this textbook and use it in their classroom. Not only is this book full of information, but the unlike a lot of textbooks it is enjoyable to read.

                    Several years ago, I was helping corporate clients prepare for a trade show in Sichuan Province. We put together a thorough guide to doing business in the province, covering its history, natural resources, legal requirements and related topics. If we didn't have the necessary information readily at hand, we could easily get it -- even the latest rules for joint ventures. But when we needed contact information on the province's government officials, it was almost nowhere to be found. We finally managed to assemble a useful directory -- but would have been delighted to have had access to a far more complete directory, like the one found in this superb Pacificom book. And we were looking for names in just one province. Here you can find listings for almost every part of China. If you need an up-to-date resource, to save you hours or even days of work, this is the directory I would recommend.

                    This is by far the most thorough and up-to-date compendium of Chinese government and officialdom that I've seen. As someone who has been doing business in China for several years, I've been frustrated time and again by the lack of current, complete contact details. Other directories, many of them several times more expensive, purport to provide the information. Most are out of date before the ink is dry. This one delivers. In addition to central government functionaries, it lists party officials, military types and municipal, provincial and diplomatic offices - no easy task at a time when there's so much shuffling and reorganization in official China. I was pleasantly surprised to find website addresses for so many government offices. This book is well organized and, apparently, will be updated frequently by mail and online. Those of us who do business in China can only say: It's about time!

                    Directory of Chinese Government and Organizations is a "must buy" for anyone who is serious about conducting business in China. The comprehensive nature and detail shown in this publication is a mark that a true expert, who is knowledgeable of how to successfully conduct business in China, wrote this guide. No other guide offers the variety of industries as this one. Plus, the ability to search organizations by province, and by national, and state government is an added benefit. I know that one of the greatest challenges that many people have faced when working with Chinese agencies is finding the right person to contact. This is the first book of this type that I have seen here in the US. Not even the most respected sources, including the Wall Street Journal can match the caliber and standards of this publication.                           I have accessed the item through Cornell University Library. Source of extremely interesting information on wage levels, employee compensation and informal labor in Azerbaijan. Even touches the issues of labor union control and outmigration. Valuable resource for the researches of social relations in Azerbaijan.

                            Sinergia Estado-Sociedad en Pro de la Rendición de Cuentas forme parte de la Serie de Documentos de Trabajo del Banco Mundial. Estos informes son publicados con los objectivos de comunicar los resultados del trabajo del Banco Mundial y estimular la discusión pública.

                            La cuestión fundamental que sirve de eje al presente estudio es en qué forma se puede transformar la relación entre el Estado y la sociedad, para que pase de ser un proceso de exigencias particularistas a convertirse en un compromiso sano, cuyos resultados sean unas políticas resultantes que velen por el interés del público en general.

                            El estudio analiza inicialmente la bibliografía disponible sobre el tema de la rendición de cuentas, y establece una clasificación de las diferentes formas en las que la sociedad civil puede interactuar con el Estado para mejorar la responsabilidad de éste por sus acciones ante la sociedad. A continuación, explora en detalle siete estudios de caso acerca de experiencias relacionadas con la "sinergia Estado-sociedad en pro de la rendición de cuentas" que han producido buenos resultados. Estos casos cubren una gran variedad de contextos (Brasil, India, México y Estados Unidos) así como una variedad de áreas de actividad gubernamental. El estudio concluye presentando una serie de lecciones conceptuales y prácticas para los funcionarios del Banco Mundial acerca de cómo iniciar, diseñar e implementar mecanismos eficaces en pro de la rendición de cuentas del Estado, tomando como base una sinergia conjunta entre éste y la sociedad.
