A Good Overview.......2002-11-03
This book is informative and a good reference, especially the economic and trade section. However, if you are looking for a well written masterpiece on Ugandan culture, this is probably not the book for you.

Book Description
In a study of Africa's political and religious past, Christopher Wrigley uses local traditions and comparative mythology to explore an ancient system of myth and ritual in the precolonial kingdom of Buganda, the nucleus of modern Uganda. The study includes critical assessment of oral traditions and places Buganda in a wider regional context. The book is an elegant, wide-ranging and original study of one of Africa's most famous kingdoms.

What exactly was special about Pre-Colonial Buganda?.......2003-10-13
Blessed with fertile and well-watered soil, East Africa's kingdom of Buganda supported a relatively dense population and became a major regional power by the mid-nineteenth century. This complex and fascinating state has also long been in need of a thorough study that cuts through the image of autocracy and military might. Most studies of the kingdom have focused on the political power of central institutions and the ruling elite.
Most political studies have emphasized that the strength of the Buganda kingdom has its roots in the way it was reformed by Sekabaka Kintu in the fifteenth century when he defeated Sekabaka Bbemba and established the current dynasty. Kintu decided to make the monarchy an all-inclusive pro-people institution. By establishing it along a clan system in terms of culture and creating administrative pillars for political governance. Unlike the neighboring kingdoms where there was a single ruling clan, in Buganda all the clans are eligible to producing a Kabaka. This is because the Kabaka honors the totem (omuziro) of his mother's clan, since the royal clan does not have have any totems. The Kabaka belongs to the clan of the Royals (called Abalangira n'Abambeija) and this clan does not have any totems. In Buganda it is taboo for one to marry from one's clan. Hence the sharing of the throne by all clans. Kintu also allocated specific duties to clans in the palace and all clans are considered equal before the throne. The administration was based on counties, sub-counties, parishes, and down to the villages. The occupants of those offices had to be of impeccable character. It was because of that, that the kingdom became stronger and popular because the people looked at the Kabakaship as their own culturally, socially and politically. Culturally because the Kabaka is the head of all clan, and custodian of all the customs and traditional keeper, politically because he is the pinnacle of the pyramid.
Political Power in Pre-Colonial Buganda explores the material basis of Ganda political power, examining in particular land, labor, commerce, and military change. The book gives us a new understanding of what Ganda power meant in real terms, and relates the story of how the kingdom used the resources at its disposal to meet the challenges that confronted it. Reid further explains how these same challenges ultimately limited Buganda's dominance of the East African Great Lakes region.
Buganda was one of the largest, most powerful polities in pre-colonial East Africa. It is also one of the most studied, although mainly a generation ago, and with an overwhelmingly political focus. Reid offers a welcome, ambitious break from this norm in this book on the material and military bases of political power in 19th-century Buganda, especially post-1850.
Emphasizing abundance and diversity, Part 1 examines the overall Ganda economy and the kinds of raw materials and economic resources which nineteenth century Buganda had at its disposal, and how the control and utilization of these led to political, social and cultural development. Reid describes how the evolution of Buganda owed much to the individual's relative economic freedom, in terms of both commercial activity and production. Its textile and metal working industries placed Buganda at the center of a thriving commercial system.
Part 2 focuses on the organization of public labor in the construction of roads and buildings, the development of state taxation, and relationship between particular professional and social groups within the labor system. The utilization of human beings compelled Ganda society to consider such concepts as liberty and slavery. However, Reid emphasizes that the Ganda system was never inflexible, and that individuals, free and otherwise, might aspire to higher status whatever their starting point.
Part 3 highlights the central importance of domestic, regional and long-distance trade to Buganda's material wealth and power. First, long-established domestic and regional trade, then 19th-century long-distance commerce connected with the East African coast, transformed Buganda's economy and foreign relations, both augmenting and undermining the wealth and power of the kingdom and its central authority. Reid points out that the Ganda were vigorous traders and that the kingdom to some extent owed it regional dominance in the nineteenth century to its commercial strength.
Finally, in Part 4, Reid turns to military organization, including the constitution of the army, the development of weaponry and the impact of firearms. Reid argues that the development of a naval fleet of enormous canoes in the nineteenth century, which had its origins in Buganda's ancient fishing communities, was created in order to compensate for military failure on land and to control long-distance trade, which had become vital to the kingdom. The Ganda army seems to have become excessively organized burdened by hierarchy and obsessed with structural detail.
Reid's book is well researched and he effectively demonstrates the influence the economy had on the type of state that pre-colonial Buganda became. Buganda still has much to offer the interested historian. Hopefully Reid's interpretation of reasons for the pre-colonial phenomena of Ganda organization, expansion and decline will kindle new interest and further debate concerning what exactly was special about Buganda in the nineteenth century.

Book Description
In 1902, Sir Apolo Kagwa, the chief Minister and Principle Regent of the Kingdom of Buganda, and his secretary, Ham Mukasa, arrived in Britain for the coronation of King Edward VII. This book, first published in 1904, is the remarkable record of the journey made by these two men into the heart of empire. It provides a view not only of the nature of the colonial relationship as it appeared to colonized subjects, but it also raises intriguing questions about the role of indigenous elites in the making of colonial culture. It also questions the function of the travel narrative in the constitution of the relationship between the metropolitan center and the colonial margin. The age of imperialism has come to be known as the great age of travel and much has been written about how British writers, administrators, and adventurers travelled to colonial outposts in order to define their relationship to their country and their cultures. However, little attention has been paid to the select number of colonial subjects who made journeys to Britain. This edition has a new introduction which provides a historical and theoretical context for understanding Buganda in the culture of colonialism. The notes help contemporary readers obtain a sense of the questions that concerned the African travellers as they made their way through Britain.

Polemic, but good.......2003-01-22
When you read this book, keep in mind Bork sold out to the populist critics of Microsoft for a fee, and repudiated this book. Which proves that economic theory is great at the macro level, but, at the micro level, game theory beats out.
This is why gains for many are cancelled out by gains for a few that are willing to lobby government (or serve as expensive consultants to their paymasters, as in the case of Bork)
And why economics is but an extension of politics, and, at the end of the day, even inefficient economics can propigate for years, decades, centuries and even millinieums (India, China).
Misinterpreting the word "efficiency".......2002-07-26
I have enjoyed other writing by Judge Bork. Unfortunately, in "The Antitrust Paradox" Judge Bork misinterprets the word "efficiency" as it applies to antitrust law. U.S. antitrust law was designed to advance Pareto or economic efficiency, not business or productive efficiency. That misunderstanding leads Judge Bork to propose, in essence, the following Carrollian extended syllogism:
Antitrust law advances "efficiency" and condemns monopoly
Consumer welfare is the goal of antitrust law
Consumer welfare is advanced by lower prices
Monopolists are more "efficient" and provide lower prices
to consumers by economies of scale
Monopolists advance consumer welfare
Monopoly is "efficient" and should be legal
Lest we forget, John D. Rockefeller lowered the consumer price of kerosene approximately ten-fold while he was crushing smaller competitors. With all due respect to Judge Bork, I don't think that is the type of "efficiency" a free, commercial society needs.
Antitrust or Maximization of Consumer Welfare.......2001-10-10
In the Antitrust Paradox, Judge Robert H. Bork gives a fascinating, though demanding, review of the most important antitrust issues in the United States. The central, pragmatic thesis of Bork is maximization of consumer welfare (also called economic efficiency) and not the protection of small businesses in addressing any antitrust issue. Unfortunately, the legislative, executive and judiciary branches of power as well as the practicing bar have not always shown consistency in making, interpreting, and applying antitrust rules. The main reason for their shared sub-optimal performance in that area is the too-often absence of a rudimentary understanding of market economics according to Bork. As a practicing marketer and lawyer, I agree with his observation. Law and economics are two complementary disciplines that should be taught together as part of the academic requirements or at least whose teaching could be made optional at the undergraduate level in our universities.
Essential Reading........2000-06-14
The Antitrust Paradox is the most important book on antitrust ever written. It is a scholarly, yet accessible, examination of the nation's antitrust laws, the history and policies behind them, and their application from their inception to today. Through the book and the policies advanced in it, Judge Bork has had a profound impact on antitrust scholarship and practice. As a result, the book is essential reading for antitrust practitioners, scholars, and those having any interest in the subject. Truly a seminal work.

Book Description
The two decades that followed World War II witnessed the end of the great European empires in Asia and Africa. Robert Tignor's new study of the decolonization experiences of Egypt, Nigeria, and Kenya elucidates the major factors that led to the transfer of power from British to African hands in these three territories. Employing a comparative method in order to explain the different decolonizing narratives in each territory, he argues that the different state policies toward the private business sector and foreign capital were the result of nationalist policies and attitudes and the influence of Cold War pressures on local events.
Using business records as well as official government sources, the work highlights the economic aspects of decolonization and weighs the influence of nationalist movements, changes in metropolitan attitudes toward the empire, and shifts in the international balance of power in bringing about the transfer of authority. The author concludes that the business communities did not play decisive roles, adhering instead to their time-honored role of leaving political issues to colonial officials and their nationalist critics. Tignor also finds that the nationalist movements, far from being ineffective, largely realized the primary goals of nationalist leaders that had been articulated for many decades.

Book Description
Focusing on the Ilparakuyo Maasai of Kenya and Tanzania, Peter Rigby discusses why third world development policies with regard to pastoral societies are inappropriate and likely to fail. A political economy of development, Rigby maintains, must incorporate historical, cultural, linguistic, and even aesthetic dimensions of the peoples involved. Using ethnography and other research materials, and basing his understanding on his years of living with the people he writes about, the author illuminates the culture and explores the prospects for a distinct section of pastoral Maasaithe Ilparakuyo. In addition, he attempts to develop a historical materialist theory of language in relation to a specific East African culture.
While rural development is a priority in many recently independent third world countries, it is often not designed for the benefit of the producer. Rigby analyzes the language and customs of the Maasai to chronicle the changes forces upon them by both colonial and post-colonial governments, and the complexity of their responses to these challenges. The cultures, languages, and aspirations of such pastoral societies are often overlooked by development planners. Rigby describes how government expectations should be based on an understanding and respect of such social conditions.

Inside Secrets from a Credit Industry Professional
There are a plethora of books out there promising to show consumers how to repair their credit. There is only one that explains how to establish credit, how to maintain and manage it, and, yes, how to fix it when it's broken The Insider's Guide to Credit Repair.
This much-needed book is current, cohesive, and thorough. It begins with the basics-defining credit, explaining its value to consumers and businesses, and introducing the key parties that keep the process successfully operatingbut then covers more complex topics, including credit laws, credit scoring, credit repair and identity theft. Most noteworthy and helpful are the short quizzes after each chapter, a comprehensive glossary, and a wide variety of sample letters.
The Insider's Guide to Credit Repair is an engaging and thought-provoking discussion of consumer credit from an insider's perspectivethe author is a former instructor for one of the national credit-reporting agencies. The scope of the material is as vast as the author's industry experience, accommodating the beginner trying to establish credit for the first time and more experienced consumers seeking greater knowledge of all aspects of credit.
K.E. Varner is a former instructor of customer-service personnel for Equifax, one of the three major credit-reporting agencies. During his tenure, he functioned as a subject matter expert in a number of high-level business projects, appeared in Federal court to help resolve consumer/credit-reporting agency conflict, and facilitated credit industry information to organizations such as the Atlanta Housing Authority.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-02-12
I found this book very helpful and honest. It builds upon knowledge that you may already have on credit repair, and is a great resource for someone just tackling their credit.
Very well written and informative.......2006-07-09
I've read many books on credit and this is one of the better ones. I like the fact that you can read what applies to you if you choose. You don't have to read the entire book from front to back but i'd recommend it for complete understanding.
It's very easy to follow, up-to-date, comprehensive. Highlights- a great chapter on credit scoring and improving your score; a good section on finding a good credit counselor; establishing and re-establishing credit, negotiating with collectors and I liked the tests after each chapter. The only thing I would have like more of is some negotiating tips but overall it's good.
I'd recommend Liz Weston's Your Credit Score as well.
Complete Understanding.......2006-05-19
This book is definately informative. It not only helps you understand ways to repair your credit, but gives you knowledge of how to make responsible decisions in using credit. It covers every aspect of credit from the major players, credit scores, and how to reestablish and establish credit.
Great Book-very informative.......2005-10-06
This book is a must read!! If you know anyone that has credit or financial issues, teenagers about to graduate from HS and college age kids-this would be a great gift for any occasion. Kids need to be informed now before they go out and start opening credit accounts they will later regret. They need to be educated on how to establish and maintain a great credit rating. Parents can use this as a guide. Buy it and read it for yourself. I am happy I have this book and look forward to sharing it and all that I have learned from it.
This Is The Only Credit Guide You Need.......2005-08-13
I read this book and was amazed by the amount of information it gave. This author hits every area of credit that people need help with. Everything from credit scores to id theft is covered here and in great detail. It even gives little quizes at the end of each chapter to help you retain the info. The best part is that the chapters are so well segmented that you can just flip to the area you need help with and go from there.
This book by far is the best credit guide out there today. The ones I've read in the past just touch on certain things here and there, but this author really gives you what you need. I'm buying copies for each of my college children. It is highly recommended!

Nothing new..........2005-08-14
Ask anyone, and they will tell you that the American system of credit is one of the toughest schemes for an individual to understand. If, as it is my case, you are a foreigner, the problem only gets escalated to the maximum degree. This is the type of book one turns to when in serious need of credit advice. It is also, unfortunately, not as helpful as I was expecting it to be. At one point, it honestly made think that I'd suddenly become the "expert" Ms. McNaughton claims one should be on the subject (Page 119). And I hadn't even been halfway through the book!
The book is divided into three major parts:
- Establishing credit
- Dealing with credit problems
- Credit restoration / Credit repair
I found its main value in the numerous spreadsheets offered as a tracking tool for credit establishment and repair. Thus, we have timed sheets to achieve different goals, forms to track current and applied for credit cards, reports to the local and major credit bureaus, debt tracking, etc.
On Pages 116 through 118 there is an interesting but still kind of far-fetched idea about using 20 credit cards - yes, you read correctly, twenty! - to make money out of a calculated scheme to obtain downpayment for a mortgage. The process; however, seems complicated, and although I would agree with Ms. McNaughton that credit cards can actually be a good thing if used wisely, I found such suggestion on a book that technically has the purpose of teaching people how to better handle their credit issues a bit dangerous. Moreover, the world of credit has changed since 1998 (when the book was written), and some information is inaccurate. For example, Equifax no longer uses the criteria described on pages 84 and 85 in their reports.
Overall, save your time and your money and research the web or contact Consumer Credit Counseling Services. Your credit will appreciate it.
Getting out of debt, and repairing damaged credit.......2001-09-07
Credit management expert Deborah McNaughton shows the reader how to establish, maintain, repair and protect his or her credit in The Insider's Guide To Managing Your Credit. The first half of this superbly presented "how to" book is on establishing credit, including information on the various types of credit, qualifying for credit, dealing with credit denials and credit reporting agencies, the credit application process, and even the use of credit to make money. The second half of The Insider's Guide To Managing Your Credit focuses on dealing with credit problems, working with collection agencies, getting out of debt, and repairing damaged credit. The informative, "reader friendly" text is enhanced with a section on "The Most Frequently Asked Questions and Their Answers"; listings of "Federal Government Publications" and "Regional Offices of the Federal Trade Commission"; a glossary; and an Index. Highly recommended!
ON EQUAL GROUND.......2001-01-17
At last a book that can be used as a guide and tool to understanding the credit industry. Everybody has had unique situations that may have had an impact on their ability to keep their credit in good standing, but one thing is certain, the industry can not and will not distinguish between individual circumstances, if you missed a payment, end of story, you have a negative mark against your credit history. This book helped me gain an understanding of the credit terminology and assisted me in learning how to read and understand my credit report. There is a lot of helpful information about credit, information that everybody should know. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is like me and could use some expert credit advice!
Not very helpful.......2000-11-01
This book is very general and doesnt give very much advice on how to actually repair your credit. It doesnt really cover the different types of credit problems that people have.
