World Development Report 2003: Sustainable Development in a Dynamic World: Transforming Institutions, Growth, and Quality of Life (World Development Report, 2003)
The World Bank Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0821351508 |
Book Description
The World Development Report 2003 addresses how to lift from poverty the three billion people now living in severe deprivation. It also explores how to improve the quality of life for everybody today and for the two billion more who will join mankind in the next thirty years. Substantial increases in growth and productivity will be necessary to achieve this goal. The current scale of economic activity and speed of change is such that ecosystem and social structures cannot keep up. The Report puts forth two main messages: the first point is that enhancing prosperity and reducing poverty requires better care of the planet's ecosystem and social fabric. And secondly, that stronger collective action at all levels--from local to global--is essential for generating and scaling up the institutions that can transform growth.Download Description
Three billion people will be added to the world ' s population over the next 50 years and 2.8 billion people today already live on less than $2 a day-almost all in developing countries. Ensuring these people have access to productive work and a better quality of life is the core development challenge of the first half of this century. Growth could itself be jeopardized over the longer term, unless a transformation of society and the management of the environment are addressed integrally with economic growth. Now in its 25th edition, this year ' s World Development Report examines, over a 50 year period, the relationship between competing policy objectives of reducing poverty, maintaining growth, improving social cohesion, and protecting the environment. The World Development Report 2003 emphasizes that many good policies have been identified but not implemented due to distributional issues and barriers to developing better institutions. The Report reviews institutional innovations that might help overcome these barriers and stresses that ensuring economic growth and improved management of the planet ' s ecosystem requires a reduction in poverty and inequality at all levels: local, national, and international. As in previous years, the report contains an appendix of selected indicators from the World Development Indicators.

Gender and Economics: A European Perspective
A. Dijkstra Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0415154251 |
Book Description
Women have been largely absent as the subject of economic study.
Gender and Economics redresses this imbalance with a user-friendly introduction to gender studies in economics.
The contributors offer comprehensive coverage of the economic condition of women throughout Europe, examining policies aimed at improving the relative economic situation of women, such as affirmative action, equal opportunity and comparable worth. The Dot-Com Debacle and the Return to Reason
Louis E. V. Nevaer Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1567204155 |
Book Description
The bubble burst. Within months, dot-com once-millionaires were scratching around for jobs. Nevaer proves that the laws of classical economics were never repealed, and that the "New" Economy was more "Old" Economy than many people believed. His briskly provocative new book shows how the return of common sense is opening fresh opportunities for wealth creation in badly battered industries--the entertainment industry especially--and offers five keys to understanding the online economy overall. The crash, says Nevaer, was inevitable. Characteristics of the New Economy created market imperfections that led to total failures. The negative effects were not isolated. They hurt the whole economy. The online community also fostered undesired social outcomes--pathological consumer behavior--but the potential for more beneficial gains is still indisputable. Nevaer applies the fundamental theories and ideas of classical economics to the world online, providing a concise understanding of what properly belongs to the Old Economy, and what belongs to the New. He examines the real--that is, sustainable--components of the New Economy centered on five industries: publishing, music, video games, and, to some dismay, gambling and adult entertainment. Meticulously researched and documented, Nevaer's book is an authoritative, probing account for analysts, researchers, students, and scholars. As a study of American culture and society, it is an entertaining read for knowledgeable people everywhere.Customer Reviews:

Welcome to Sales Management: The First 90 Days and Beyond. An Operating Guide for New Sales Managers
Mark White Manufacturer: AuthorHouse ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1418441961 |
Book Description
Welcome to Sales Management is written for those who aspire to sales management; those who recently assumed sales management responsibilities for the first time; and those who have received little if any formal sales management training. During the first three months on the job it's easy for a new sales manager to take a wrong turn, run in circles or even get lost. This happens to all new managers. WSM is divided into three parts each providing a road map to guide rookie sales manager through their first 90 days and beyond. Part One serves as an introduction to the sales management process and addresses the initial actions taken during the first month on the job. Each action is designed to prepare new managers for their new role. Various methods are offered to assess the sales effectiveness of their teams. Part Two focuses on the disciplines that comprise the sales management process and the skills needed to successfully execute each discipline. There is no time frame associated with Part Two. It can take years or an entire career to master the disciplines and skills associated with the process. Few managers master all of them. Part Three concentrates on launching a new sales manager's career; creating a team action plan; establishing a winning environment; and reviewing several examples of proactive management. These activities take approximately 60 days to initiate or complete. The final chapter encourages new managers to lead and learn as they go and to not be afraid to make mistakes. Summaries are included at the conclusion of each chapter for periodic review and to keep a new sales manager moving in the right direction. An appendix offers an assortment of sales management tools.
