The World Development Report 2003 addresses how to lift from poverty the three billion people now living in severe deprivation. It also explores how to improve the quality of life for everybody today and for the two billion more who will join mankind in the next thirty years. Substantial increases in growth and productivity will be necessary to achieve this goal. The current scale of economic activity and speed of change is such that ecosystem and social structures cannot keep up. The Report puts forth two main messages: the first point is that enhancing prosperity and reducing poverty requires better care of the planet's ecosystem and social fabric. And secondly, that stronger collective action at all levels--from local to global--is essential for generating and scaling up the institutions that can transform growth.

Three billion people will be added to the world ' s population over the next 50 years and 2.8 billion people today already live on less than $2 a day-almost all in developing countries. Ensuring these people have access to productive work and a better quality of life is the core development challenge of the first half of this century. Growth could itself be jeopardized over the longer term, unless a transformation of society and the management of the environment are addressed integrally with economic growth. Now in its 25th edition, this year ' s World Development Report examines, over a 50 year period, the relationship between competing policy objectives of reducing poverty, maintaining growth, improving social cohesion, and protecting the environment. The World Development Report 2003 emphasizes that many good policies have been identified but not implemented due to distributional issues and barriers to developing better institutions. The Report reviews institutional innovations that might help overcome these barriers and stresses that ensuring economic growth and improved management of the planet ' s ecosystem requires a reduction in poverty and inequality at all levels: local, national, and international. As in previous years, the report contains an appendix of selected indicators from the World Development Indicators.

Mass Confusion is more to the point.......2006-03-30

The description by the publisher of a "seminal" book in the field is laughable. Well, if by seminal, he means the one and only case book on the subject. Other wise the book is about as helpful as most legal case books, which is not very. Of course the legal profession has a high thresh hold for worthless and confusing and poorly written text. Just wade into legal scholarship sometime and see if you don't find most of the writing incomprehensible, obtuse, circular, etc.

Now the law in this area is more often than not confused and convoluted, but Mulenix' minimal explanatory text in no way clears up the subject for the hapless student.

If you are unfortunate enough to find yourself in a Mass Torts class, then this is the only text available. Be afraid, be very afraid. Unfortunately the subject matter is too eclectic to have attracted the attention of the "commercial outline" publishers. So you are on your own here. Rue the day you picked Mass Torts as an elective.

My advice: skip this book and the class. Stick with upper level courses that will be tested on the bar.

Seminal work in the field.......1997-05-09

A must for anyone interested in this emerging field. Professor Mullenix sets a new standard for scholarship. This will be the standard reference for many, many years to come

A very good book........2003-03-30

What are the chances that the only negative reviews were submitted on the same day? It's clear that it's a student who didn't do well in class. As the Harvard Business School concluded, THE DOT COM DEBACLE is clearly the definitive book about the dot-com bubble burst! It is an excellent discussion.

A compelling discussion.......2003-03-30

I read about this book in the Harvard Business School Review when it was named one of the Recommended business books of 2002. THE DOT COM DEBACLE reminded me of Riesman's THE LONELY CROWD. Both have fluid prose, though lengthy in an academic sort of way, but this is not to say it is dull. Like THE LONELY CROWD, Nevaer divides his chapter with the "This is what I'm about to say, and there, I've just said what I said I'd say, so let's review" approach popular in graduate courses. It also approaches the discussion from an interdisciplinary angle, which is terrific for achieving the "bigger picture." For example, how Alfred Kahn's "tyranny of small decisions" applies to the decimation of independent booksellers because of e-commerice is riveting: it makes one understand why certain economic principles transcend technology. If this makes the book feel scientific its very structure imparts a suggestion of seriousness and gravitas. Recent books that use the same approach is Robert Putnam's BOWLING ALONE: THE COLLAPSE AND REVIVAL OF AMERICAN COMMUNITY. To be sure, the book isn't for everyone, but it is a solid analysis of what went wrong and why it went wrong: the dot-commers believed they could defy the laws of economics and this hubris was its undoing. This is, by far, the best book on the subject I've read.

This is a very poorly written book........2003-03-19

It's wordy, full of rhetoric and jargon, and the author is a pseudo-intellectual supercilious know it all that knows nothing. The book runs around in circles and states some blatant facts that anybody with a 3rd grade education could have gotten. I think the positive reviews given by other readers must have been from either himself (the author) or from friends trying to pump it up to be something other than the major flop it is. I'd avoid this book at all costs. Here, I'll sum it up for you: The dot-bomb happened because people didn't have a business plan for making money.

Where is this "Economist" from?.......2003-03-19

I had high expectations when I first picked this up, especially after having read the other on-line reviews. However, after having read this "book", I would question the credentials of the author. It is obvious that the author thinks highly of himself - I wager he is the only one who does. I wonder where he received his degree - if he has one. I was extremely disappointed. His science was poorly constructed and his conclusions were mundane. I am sorry that I spent the money.

A shaved ape could have done a better job........2003-03-19

I know that there's an old theory that an infinite number of monkeys on an infinite number of keyboards could have written the works of Shakespear, but Nevaer fails to hit the mark of simian literary here. It's quite boring and his science is faulty, he often states the obvious and his conclusions are subjective and not based on true fact. I can't believe they would consider this a text book.
